More thoughts on The Crux and 29😊

We know that the number 29 is mentioned a few times across the album in various ways.

Gap Tooth Smile (the number of times he tells her he loves her)

Lonesome Is A State Of Mind ("twenty-nine and misaligned")

(There may be more hiding somewhere in there as well.)

Now, many thought that 29 was a reference to someone when the number first started popping up in connection to the album...but my thoughts are that 29 doesn't necessarily represent someone in Joe's life, but rather Joe and his own experiences with this turning point (age) in his life.

I believe that Joe had mentioned that he started writing for The Crux pretty much as soon as Decide had come out (or once he was finished writing it). We also know that he was filming various projects like Fargo season 5 and Finalmente l'alba while he was penning songs for the album.

Finalmente l'alba started filming in Aug. 2022 Fargo season 5 started filming in Oct. 2022

At that time, Joe would have just turned 30, and the major theme of The Crux is moving forward with your life and leaving a part of yourself behind.

As someone who has also recently gone through entering her thirties, let me tell you that it is SCARY! You realize that the time for being young is kind of over, and now you're truly an adult where things change. You know who you are a little more - or at least you know the things you want/don't want out of life to a better extent. But you are also trying to figure out how to achieve all those things that you want and need.

So, I think that the 29 theme in The Crux actually represents The Crux itself. Twenty-nine is a crux - a turning point - and major milestone in your life where you leave some parts of yourself behind (like when you move on from your twenties) and move into the next chapter (like when you enter your thirties). ♡

When I referred to someone it's because I had seen others mention that it was a date specific to the someone he broke up with.

Personally, if I was hurt that much from a breakup, I wouldn't want to dedicate a specific number/piece of imagery or lyric to that person on an album that would always be a constant reminder.

Instead, 29 being his age would be more of an homage to a tumultuous and formative age, as you said, where his life changed (for the better, even if it was difficult).
