Today my legs carried me far. Considering 13.5 miles is the most I’ve ever ran, and today I think I managed 20 of the 28 miles running rather than walking over coastal cliffs and in at least 22 degree heat, I’m quite astounded at myself! Monitoring my water + salt levels was key with the heat, and I’m not usually good with that but for this trip I really considered each day, including trail mix bags. We’ll see what tomorrow brings when I do actually have to carry my 20kg+ backpack 13 miles before running/walking another 11 all on a coastal path. Yet, I got myself into it and it’s a fun challenge. I am now more than happy to add #trailrunner to my moniker. The new normal. Context: I had a doctor's appointment earlier today at the mall, long overdue since the end of March. The clinic was closed along with the mall upon the declaration of the community lockdown, and only resumed partial operations recently. I took these photos after I was done. The mall itself was almost devoid of life in spite of splattering of jittery people itching from cabin fever and bourgeois cravings. Predictably though, the lines were concentrated on groceries and, now that they're open, hardware stores. Since there's still no public transport, it was a 30 minute walk from my place to the mall, and another half hour back. Rusty nails. But these are recent waymarkers. The six trails are being officially launched quite soon. I was on what will be the Angel's Way, from Seaton Sluice to Durham. Once launched I'd like route maps because I'll be able to walk several of the paths easily using public transport to get around. More routes to add to the ones I already want to explore. This route passes through Jesmond Dene, detouring I suspect for the ruins of St. Mary's Chapel and the old pilgrimage well. Eight trips to the well equals one to Rome.
