The smell of chlorine and sweat was so thick in the pool house that it actually made it a little hard to breathe; every other time she’d been in there, the door had been wide open and the sun had been shining and kids had been running in and out with pool noodles, but now it was just...dark, and close, and stiflingly hot, and -

It was only that thought (Boy, it’s so hot in here) that kept Abi from gasping when she looked up from her sneakers and saw two red pinpricks watching her from the dark. Her brain was ready, maybe a little too ready even, to accept that it was nothing more than a trick of the light, that Nick’s eyes were just reflecting the heating lamp they’d put down in front of him.

She felt stupid the moment it clicked, and to prove to herself that she was jumping at shadows, she walked over to kneel at his side, careful to watch his eyes as she asked, “Are you feeling any better?”

Nick’s eyes didn’t follow her as she moved, but instead remained fixed on the heat lamp, the reddish-orange glow pooling there until they seemed to give off a light of their own, sick and over-saturated and hot above all else. “Oh, I will be,” he said, and when he did turn to her, the fire stayed in his eyes, glinting brighter and brighter still even as he flung the lamp towards the others in the corner, even as his hand closed down around her wrist, twin flames casting impossible shadows to warp the shape of his grin, “Just give it a minute.”
