Okay so I saw this post about dark percy (really him reaching his Limit and fighting full strength with everything he had) and I was imagining the potential fallout of that. Pretty bad, as you can guess.

The thing is a lot of percys strongest moments happen out of view of the olympians, especially in hoo. The hurricane atop the glacier in alaska, the poison scene in tartarus, bending the depression river and the one in the palace of nyx.

Stuff like the St Helens eruption got him washed up on an inescapable island literally removed from reality until calypso gave him the OK, the achillies curse he got tricked into losing by hera. Smaller moments, the minotaur, fighting ares, the stolen pirate ship, walking on water vs hyperion, freshwater sources, him knowing both Latin and Greek, they're more easily brushed off or at least mostly due to cunning, sword skills and sheer luck and grit.

But basically the olympians don't actually know the full extent of percys strength and divine power. They have hints - percy standing on the throne, winning against ares, his many victories - but what they aren't willing to brush aside in the heat of (an important) battle there have been pretty strong consequences for.

Heck, just look at Frank, he's no prodigy with weapons, he's polite and respectful, but his distant relation to two olympians letting him inherit shapeshifting earned him direct divine meddling and his life force tied to a hunk of half toasted firewood. Man is a honey bear with lactose intolerance and he was punished with a mythical death curse for being too strong.

If Percy's true strength came out, he would risk losing everything. His freedom, most certainly. If he wasn't straight up executed he might wind up in a Greek myth style imprisonment, the way of atlas, prometheus, calypso, or something like the myriad of ways Greek heroes met their end. Good scenario he survives a dozen curses and gets on with life with a dozen new disabilities, best case scenario he's stripped of every inch of divine power and dropped back to the mortal world, not even clear sighted. Total separation from the Greeks and Romans. Oh, annabeth would marry him either way, and his friends would hardly abandon him despite the gods wishes, but they'd hardly be able to see him, and no long range contact without the ability to IM him or vice versa.

All of that to say Percy is hiding his true strength from the gods themselves - maybe not consciously, and it's not even power he particularly wants - but if they ever find out?

It's game over.

But why is he so strong? I don't know. What I do know is that the half bloods of the books are so much stronger than the ones of myth. Used to be that divine blood would get you divine favour and a great fate whether you liked it or not. Maybe some cunning and bow skills. A spot of spell casting if you were really lucky. Achillies got his curse after he was born, Perseus had a dozen magic artifacts, orpheus had something going on but hercules is to my knowledge an outlier. Now? Everyone in camp has some special power. Flight, fire, necromancy, hypnotism, dream walking etc. However it's happening, half bloods are slowly but surely getting a lot, lot stronger every century that passes. Meta? I mean I guess. But.

What no one has done before is something that their godly parent couldn't.

Except.

Except Percy.

Except Percy, in tartarus, at his mental, emotional and physical limit, controlling poison with his mind, overpowering the goddess of poison in her home, making misery choke on misery. Feeling something in his chest crack. Doing something poseidon could not, and doing it better than the person who could.

Down there, hidden away from the gods, he evolved. For that brief moment, he did something, was something new.

And that was how the gods overthrew the titans.

And that's why they must never find out.

Something that pisses me off is the fact that Persephone just straight up demanded that Chiron give her a therapy session immediately.like,no schedule or anything just a therapy session with no context.

Like,number one:Persephone hasn’t had a therapy session in 10 YEARS.two:she just straight I demanded it without even asking Chiron is she had the time.and three:remember how the entirety of the underworld was asleep for at least a few months(due to all the food being rotten in hades’ fridge) and at most five or four years?well,persephone,MAYBE YOU SHOULD TRY AND GIVE PEOPLE SPACE TO SORT THEIR LIFE BACK IN ORDER BEFORE THEY HIVE YOU AND YOUR MOM THERAPY SESSION!

This is another issue where it’s just completely glossed over the fact that people where in comas for YEARS and have no problem shrugging it off.

Look,RS,if you want to show Persephone being a good queen,then show it.show her helping the citizens who have families outside of the underworld and help them reconnect.

This week's Lore Olympus has Persephone and Demeter going to therapy. Let's begin.

Right out of the gate, like the trained professional she is, Chiron asks what they genuinely want out of therapy.

For Persephone, who has had some therapy already, wants a HEALTHY relationship with her mother.

Demeter, on the other hand, is more focused on the injustices (perceived or otherwise) that were done to her. She sees Persephone exercising her free will as selfishness i.e. if she is ever focusing on herself, that's a "bad" thing.

Here, we see that Demeter'a creation of Persephone was essentially a repeat of the reason for her own creation-- as a tool, as a means to a goal.

Metis enforced giving everyone a better life onto Demeter. That it was their responsibility. That meant getting rid of Kronos as well.

It wouldn't surprise me if Hades' resemblance to Kronos also enforced her distrust of men, ESPECIALLY Hades.

Demeter also brings up the luxuries Persephone gets to enjoy in the Underworld. There's the jealous logic of "If I had to suffer, then you have to suffer as well!." Also, as I mentioned before, Demeter could see 'self care = selfish'.

What Demeter fails to realize is that work/pleasure balance is not only possible but needed. She couldn't get that in her youth during the Titanomachy, but what's to stop her now? Why not....I dunno, take care of the crops for the day, then go grab a deep tissue massage?

The other thing Demeter fails to realize (or refuses to acknowledge) is that Persephone IS showing care for others in the Underworld. She created Elysium. Persephone was excited to show it to her, but Demeter had no interest. Yeah, the inhabitants are dead, but they are still souls!

I've been legit concerned about this reunion for obvious reasons. By this point, it's known what a creepy piece of shit Apollo is. I just really, REALLY hope that Artemis opted to have backup in case this encounter went seriously south. Maybe Hermes is hiding nearby, ready to let Apollo taste his other fist.

Speaking of Hermes.... That's a nice shiner he gave Apollo! *applause*

This has got to be gut-wrenching for Artemis. She loves her brother, but she can't excuse what she has heard he's done. She knows from what Persephone (and likely Daphne) told her, but she needs to hear it from Apollo as well.

Will Apollo lie to his sister's face? Will he get defensive? No good can come from this asshole. We've seen that much. Hopefully, those questions will be answered in the next installment.

So does do most Greek Mythology Likers now come through Percy Jackson or Lore Olympus or sumn? I feel like I’m an outlier for never super deeply diving into anything but illustrated versions of the source material.

I enjoy the efforts of the "Percy Jackson" show to make the kids better at catching on to the monsters and other mythological figures they meet. It suits the fast pacing demanded by the limited number of episodes. It fits with how vigilant and clever the characters are. The idea that half-blood children are desperately trying to memorize the lore and often end up in danger despite their best efforts is tragically compelling to me.

Knowing that it's Medusa ahead doesn't make Medusa not dangerous. It's interesting to have Medusa use their knowledge of her story and compassion against them. I enjoy seeing these kids trying to make good and kind choices with the knowledge they have.

Also, I was scrolling Wikipedia for a list of Poseidon's children while chatting with someone after the latest episode (7), and I found out that there's a lost Euripides play about Bellerophon (son of Poseidon), rider of Pegasus (another child of Poseidon), the hero who slew the Chimera. It involves Bellerophon doubting the existence of the gods and trying to storm Olympus on Pegasus??? That sounds incredibly cool. I so badly wish that I could read that lost play.

And thinking about these plays and how much I enjoy these stories made me finally fully realize that the opinions of my lit classes and even greater academia on these stories must have nothing on the arguments held at Camp Half-blood. This camp is fully of traumatized and troubled teenagers with swords, whose emotional investment in these stories outclasses everyone else on the planet, partially because their very survival depends on their knowledge of this lore and the grace of their godly family. They must have OPINIONS on this stuff that takes "fandom" behavior to another level.

The "Is Euripides' Medea a girlboss?" argument has been permanently banned as a subject by Chiron after one long and bloody summer of debate.

Lore Olympus Episode 246 Spoilers

Holy shit, I hate this episode.

The first half is just RS making Demeter grovel before her daughter's groomer, who then proceeds to victim blame her.

"It's not my place to speak on [Persephone's] behalf."

-Continues to speak on her behalf and make assumptions about how she might feel about her mother.-

The way Demeter's and Hades' conversation is just Hades going "Yeah, if you had just let your daughter marry me, the guy who groomed her and is infamous for taking advantage of young, vulnerable women through my wealth, then you wouldn't be in this position now."

Goood, I want Demeter to bring a devastating winter so bad. She deserves to go off on these assholes without being villainized for it.

Oh hey, RS remembered Artemis exists. And of course she still doesn't know about Apollo, even though it's basically common knowledge in Persephone's friend-circle now. Tell me you don't give a shit about a character without telling me you don't give a shit about a character.

I don't know what's worse:

Persephone being completely unapologetic about harassing and scaring the shit out of Leuce, who she knows can't retaliate, or Hades going "Oh yeah, my wife abusing her powers to bully a peasant woman is so hot, let's have sex right now."

Like, you have to be a special kind of oblivious to write a scene like this and not realize how horrifying the implications here are.

Persephone's annoyed look when Hades tells her Demeter's message that she loves Persephone and misses her. Fuck right off you spoiled, pink bimbo, you do not get to make that face after everything you put your mom through.

Poor Chiron, she probably had a real busy day and then this entitled Karen just comes crashing into her DMs demanding a therapy session with her mom right then and there.

Persephone, did you ask Demeter for permission before you wrote her up for this? Prolly not, this session is a blatant excuse for even more Demeter-bashing. Hades had his turn, now Persephone gets to have a go.

So because it's pride month I just gotta mention again how lore olympus isn't as progressive as it may frame itself. All of the queer relationships and characters are overwhelmingly ignored in favor for the multiple hetro-normative monogamous relationships.

I mean even the most basic shit isn't present... like we just had a wedding and none of the women wore suits? Eros fits the gay best friend trope for basically everything but still manages to only make one passing comment that like sort of imply attraction to men that could easily be miss or ignored.

And also the biggest thing for me, how most of the women with different body types are queer women. Hestia is the only fat women that gets any time, Athena is just straight up drawn like a man sometimes, and so is Morpheus.

When 90% of the women are drawn with the same or extremely similar body type of thin, small with big boobs.. and every single queer women doesn't have that body type it's just... hits me the wrong way. It's honestly the worse with Morpheus because besides just learning she's trans outside of the comic, there are only two ways to know she's trans. One knowing the god she is based on is a man (which isn't even that good a way cause of chiron being a cis women) and two.. that she isn't drawn like the other women.

I don't think it's something Rs is doing purposefully or maliciously but I feel like its something that should be mentioned cause it is really weird how this happened...

A little late again, but here's this week's Lore Olympus post, and oo... it's loaded!

Let's start with Demeter coming to talk to Hades. King of the Underworld definitely doesn't want to, but he keeps it straightforward and civil. He even states that it's not his place to speak on Persephone's behalf, but he will tell it as he sees it.

Demeter has blown so many chances to have a healthy relationship with Persephone. Maybe the message is finally getting hammered home. Or, maybe it isn't. We shall see.

It's a drunk and tired kind of night at Hermes' & Artemis' new apartment. With Thanatos finally found, Hermes can take a breather from dealing with the deceased.

Artemis hates being left in the dark, and Hermes knows it, so he's forthcoming not only about Apollo looking for his sister, but also about Dionysus. Hermes also doesn't want bad shit happening to Artemis from Apollo, so he's being proactive by asking, in a way, how he can help with an inevitable situation.

OMG! I can't get over this part!

Hades: YOUR WRATH IS SEXY AND MY BODY IS READY!

Hades firmly told Leuce to fuck off. Then, Persephone essentially told Leuce to fuck off. What I feel the need to point out is that rather than take out her anger at Leuce on Hades (which in some relationships, that happens), she addressed it with the perpetrator in the first place.

Persephone was wrathful (as seen by her red eyes), but she still kept it under control. Rather than killing, maiming, or "planting" Leuce, she addressed the problem. Maybe not the BEST idea of letting animals run amok in Leuce's house, but if the worst part is a scare and some animal poop on the floor, I'd say Leuce got pretty damn lucky.

And Hades was HOT for her assertiveness!

Definitely a mood killer.

That is the face of someone delivering a message they don't want to deliver or believe.

Persephone acknowledges that she can't avoid her mother forever. She does have responsibilities in the Mortal realm, and she'll have to cross paths with her mother inevitably.

How does she plan to contend with that?

Persephone is returning to therapy, and she is dragging her mother into it as well.

While the love and support from Hades, Hermes, and Eros is a huge help to Persephone, having a trained therapist (if I recall, the name is Chiron?) mediate the issue is also critical. I've been saying that Persephone needs more therapy to continue her healing process, and requesting this appointment is a step in the right direction.

I just really hope they don't trash the office during their session.....

lo and queer masc/man rep

or therefore the complete lack there of. which is incredibly insulting considering how common and prominent it was in original myth (although not always perfect but what greek myth is regardless of straight or gay). also i will be using queer in place of LGBT+ as an umbrella term so if you're not comfortable with that then sorry.

now rachel has made attempts at including queer rep through hestia and athena as lesbians and morpheus (and maybe chiron? idk) as trans women. which could be a whole separate post on its own with the problems that arise with them, but seeing as i am not a lesbian or trans woman, i will not be speaking on them in this post nor to the same degree if i do ever mention them.

what i am is a queer man, both bisexual and trans. i am also a big enjoyer of greek myth. i am not a big enjoyer of lore olympus nor of rachel's complete lack of representation when it comes to men like myself despite it being again very prominent within the original myths. now seeing how badly she has handled other forms of representation for other groups, i am partially glad she hasn't tried. but while i am a little happy, i am more so overall upset and annoyed at this. it comes off as nothing more than simple erasure.

the closest we've seen of rep for queer men/mascs is aged up storge who is more feminine then other men in the story, but this has not been explicitly confirmed therefore i will not be including this. besides men can be both feminine and still cishet. finally storge is a minor background character with little importance, so even if rachel did decide to make him canon queer we likely would not see much of that.

his brother eros is another annoying case as he is unarguably coded as a gay best friend stereotype. but without being gay. he is fashionable, witty, intelligent, dramatic, and always serves as a shoulder for his straight friend to cry on. but again he is not even fucking gay. he is married to a woman with a child. while i would like to see better representation then the gbf stereotype it is still insulting that rachel while coding eros to act like that couldn't even do the bare minimum of making him bisexual.

now it has been pointed out to me that names of male lovers to gods have been used and slapped on female nymphs. krokos (one of persephone's dead nympth friends) was a male spartan lover of hermes, and ampleus (the name pysche took as a nymph) was a lover of dionysus. now i am not upset that rachel didn't include the original stories since the story is already messy enough. i am upset that she took the names of two queer men from myth and slapped them on two woman. one of which ends up marrying a man, and the other dying. a quick google search could show that these names belonged to male lovers of gods, and so to me it comes off as at best lazy and at worst erasure.

i won't be discussing much of dionysus since he was only recently introudced. nor of apollo since the erasure of his queer identity is only one of many problems that occur with his character and how rachel wrote it, which could constitution a completely separate post.

i will be discussing hermes though. as both a character that we have seen a lot of, and as one that has not been completely villainized by the plot. he had an incredibly early appearance in the webtoon and had a handful of myths where he had male lovers or expressed homosexual love. but not a single mention or even passing comment has ever been made about this. it would be incredibly easy for rachel to just throw in one allusion to any of his male lovers (besides krokos who has been turned into a nymph for some reason) yet this never happens.

zeus is another character we have seen a lot of, especially in regards to his many affairs. all of which have canonically been with women. despite the many affairs he carried out with men. one of the most famous being ganymede and the foundation for the myth behind aquarius and the cup bearer. again it would not be so incredibly difficult for rachel to add any allusion to his male lovers. yet again though, nothing. (i will come back to this post after some fast passes become public and i can discuss his treatment as a pregnant man)

poseidon also had a couple queer lovers but besides the reference to the fact that he has a polygam "pod" we haven't actually seen any of his partners besides his wife.

the way rachel draws men with all perfect six pack bodies is also something that annoys me, and i'll be discussing it briefly here. people always comment on the lack of body diversity for the women in the comic but for the men it is much more severe. hermes, thanatos and eros who were all shown to be more skinny and not completely jacked in the beginning of the story are now all ripped with washboard abs. the men are all built like brick walls and it is just upsetting to see as a trans man who does not fit into that category. it sends the message that to be attractive a man must be perfectly fit. not scrawny or skinny or god forbid even fat.

also again as i said in the beginning many of the myths for queer men were just as fucked and problematic. it’s greek mythology it’s inevitable. but i’m more upset over the fact that if rachel can modernize and (attempt to) make hetero myths less gross, then where is that effort for homo myths

overall despite the overwhelming amount of queer man/masc rep that exists within the source material, rachel utilizes none of it. there has not been mention or allusion to a single queer god, forget any trans god. to me it comes off as purposefully ignorant and as erasure of queer men/mascs. which is fucking annoying considering how many of us see ourselves for once fucking represented in these myths. she has plenty of opportunity to include rep for people like myself but continuously chooses not to, instead adding another hetero-centric plot line for no reason. it is tiring and annoying to see so many gods that were queer in their myths not be represented as such. i will not make assumptions about why rachel chooses not to include this kind of rep, i will simply say to me it comes off as blatant erasure.

i could go on, and probably will come back to this post but for now i have said what i have wanted to say.
