“That doesn’t surprise me.” Loren chuckled softly, shaking his head. It was wild to think about how much of his memory was gone, how much change he had been through since he could quite literally last remember…the Loren that had been in the accident was an entirely different one that had woken up from it.

Thankfully, though, he hadn’t forgotten how ready he had felt for a family of his own. He wasn’t sure that was possible, considering he’d been romanticizing the idea since meeting Tristan and Bae, but he still could recall the moment he realized he was ready. If only he could’ve still remembered that said future wouldn’t be with Tasha. Part of him knew deep down, but it was quite disorienting waking up under the guise of still dating her.

Even if this was all so new to him, Loren was trying desperately to be optimistic about everything. If he knew he’d be starting a family with his ex, he would be freaking out, but he felt weirdly optimistic about his. He couldn’t remember Katya, nonetheless loving her, but she still felt familiar. He don’t have a doubt he could love her again and would in time. His mind might’ve forgotten her, but his body was borderline begging for hers. It felt wrong every time they were apart.

“I really can’t wait to meet them.” Loren mused, nodding down to Katya’s bump. “I wish I had more of a memory of the 3 of you, but lack of it doesn’t change the love I already have for them.” He promised. It was kind of scary how much their daughters occupied his mind now. “Or you, Katya. We wouldn’t be in this position if it weren’t for you and I can’t thank you enough for all you’ve sacrificed for your family so far…”

Essay on Goncharov is below cut. I used Wikipedia for the casting so if anything is wrong there blame Wikipedia. The theme of the class was the simulation and reality vs unreality so I had to add that into the essay and it couldn’t be that long because it is a Wild Card essay.

When exactly does a movie become real? Most would argue that it becomes real the moment a movie is filmed and put out for the world to see. However, Tumblr has proven that a movie might become real the moment it is thought up. This is true in the case of Martin Scorsese’s 1973 movie Goncharov which doesn’t actually exist.

On August 21st, 2020, Tumblr user zootycoon posted a photo of knockoff boots that said on the tag “Martin Scorsese presents Goncharov” and titled it “The Greatest Mafia movie ever made.” Of course the original poster learned that the movie Goncharov did not actually exist and wrote underneath the photo, “I got these knockoff boots online and instead of the brand name on the tag they have the name of an apparently nonexistent Martin Scorsese movie??? What the fuck.” Tumblr being Tumblr could not let this go and just a few weeks ago a slew of posts, fanart, fanfiction, and musical scores were flooded on Tumblr with people making casting choices and whole plot lines about the nonexistent movie Goncharov.  

The movie from what I have gathered is about a bunch of Russian mobsters in Italy with the leading man Goncharov who is played by Robert De Niro. He is married to Katya whom Tumblr has cast to be played by Cybil Shepherd. However he is gay and in love with an Italian mobster who is his rival Andrey played by Harvey Keitel. However, that’s ok with his wife Katya because she is also in love with a woman named Sofia played by Sophia Loren. One other character that people talk about is Joseph “Ice Pick Joe” Morelli played by John Cazale. Other cast members include Gene Hackman, Al Pacino, and Lynda Carter. Lynda Carter is especially relevant since she actually cast herself in the movie since she is on Tumblr and got in on the action.

In terms of plot it mostly consists of murder and the relationships between the four main cast members, Goncharov, Katya, Andrey, and Sofia. A big theme is the existence of a clock tower which is present in many of the fanmade posters for the film. Since it is meant to be the greatest mafia movie of all time, adding too much plot would ruin that motif so instead little snippets have been added. These include a boat scene and Katya faking her own death.

Once the posts got popular on Tumblr other sites also made pages on them, including Wikipedia, TV Tropes, and Archive of our Own (a popular fanfiction site). Martin Scorsese’s Wikipedia page was edited so many times to include Goncharov on his filmography section that editing his Wikipedia page is no longer optional at this time. 

On November 25th, 2022, Martin Scorsese’s twenty-three year old daughter, Francesca posted a Tik Tok in which she showed that she had asked her father if he had heard of Goncharov and he responded that he “made that film years ago.” So it has come to the point where the appointed director of this fake film has acknowledged its presence and admitted to making it. 

This begs the question that if the director admits himself that he made this fake movie does it then become real. Even if the movie has never actually been made, is the fact that many people on Tumblr and even the director himself decide that it’s real is it real or is it still fake?

Terzo and Alé watch 90 Day Fiancé. Honestly Alé more tolerates it, but Terzo can't get enough. Terzo screaming at the TV, "You ARE a user Mohamed! Stronzo!"

Copia and Lia watch RuPaul's Drag Race, mostly reruns. Copia absolutely loves Trixie and Katya. Lia prefers Bianca Del Rio. "Those two crack me up amore."

“Can I sleep in same bed? I will stay on my side, promise!” Katya to Loren

“Oh, uh…” Loren scratched the back of his neck, not prepared for her question. They had this suite for another couple of days while they figured everything out. He’d booked one with two king sized beds, but that was just out of instinct. He had the money in his bank account to live a life of excess.

Loren wasn’t in the business of turning beautiful women away from his bed. In fact, Katya had to be the most beautiful woman he’d ever laid eyes on. He didn’t know if seeing her pregnant with kids made her more beautiful, or if she was so beautiful already that he didn’t think twice about her being so pregnant. It was a mind fuck. He found himself starting at herself often, because how couldn’t he? He couldn’t remember, but somehow and some way, he made this extraordinary woman fall in love with him.

He only hesitated he was overthinking things. If he didn’t want her in his bed, he would have told her. He had no problem respecting his boundaries recently. “Yeah. It’s a big one.” He chuckled, running his hand through his hair. “If it makes you more comfortable, it’s the least I can do.”

Loren didn’t know how he would feel if he woke up wrapped around her, considering everything, but he highly doubted he would be upset with the fact. If she unknowingly crossed over to his side in her sleep, it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. It would surprise him, yes, but it wasn’t something to be afraid of. He couldn’t see himself freaking out waking up to her. He just knew this all meant different things for both of them.

“Let me guess - we were sharing a bed the first night we met.” Loren mused softly. He wasn’t mocking Katya, he was just realizing how close they really had been. How he married her as quickly as they did. “What’s mine is yours, after all. I’d be a pretty bad husband to tell you no.”

Okay but the way names are used in Goncharov (1973) especially for Katya? 

When she arrives in Naples, the passport officer calls her ‘Signora Goncharova’, after a bit of prompting. She’s here to be Goncharov’s wife, and this is the role she’s used to playing. The passport officer mangles the pronunciation, and originally this is played as a moment of levity in a movie that sorely needs it, but as you get further, you realize what Scorsese was saying; that she’s not Goncharova, wife of Goncharov. 

Mario also calls her Signora Goncharova, but only to Goncharov, only to taunt him by the fact that he was near Katya, trying to provoke him to no avail. To Katya herself, he feigns ignorance of Russian naming conventions-- he calls her Goncharov. She doesn’t correct him. It’s a scene that really draws the parallels of Katya and her husband, and belies the fact that Goncharov is itself a title. Killing the head does not kill the body, and there will always be other Goncharovs to carry on. It also briefly imagines a world where Katya herself is the titular Goncharov-- and why shouldn’t she be? She’s just as ruthless, just as calculated, just as ready for battle as her husband, and she’s been dragged into it just the same. The fact that Mario, claiming ignorance, only calls her Goncharov between the two of them is an acknowledgement, however tacit, of this. 

Goncharov himself calls her Katya, even when he’s angry. When he’s in a good mood, he almost talks down to her, with his ‘little Katya’. They have been together for years. In a way, claiming her diminutive nickname is a way for him to reconnect with his own childhood, his own vulnerability. But at the same time, it is a way to control her-- to put her down. To him, she will always be little Katya from the streets of Moscow, even if he himself has outgrown being Vanya, and grown into being Goncharov. She is not a threat to him, but neither is she a true partner. 

The differences between her pronunciation when she introduces herself to Sofia and Sofia’s name for her are subtle, but there. She is Yekaterina, whereas Sofia uses a more Italian Caterina. You can actually see Cybill Shepherd purse her lips and let it slide-- one more person mangling her name. But Sophia Loren plays it as a joke, an opening into friendship, and later a claim. When Katya is speaking with Mario later, she corrects him not from calling her Goncharov the way she did with the passport officer, not to Yekaterina as she corrects Andrei when he gets too familiar with her, but to Caterina, rolled ‘r’ and all. She has taken Sofia’s claim and accepted it, made it hers.

How Adash has cerebral palsy, even if people don’t know what that is, and he needs forearm crutches to get around. He’s still the heir of his family, a powerful mage, and an all around good dude. His disability doesn’t change the respect he’s given because Krizvalla doesn’t view disability in the same way we do.

How Loren can’t walk more than a few hundred steps a day before it starts to hurt, so when they go out onto the road to travel, time is taken to ensure Loren will be comfortable while riding.

Morgan’s got chronic pain from an injury, as well as bad knees and bones due to their lineage. Basil has albinism.

And of course the multitude of autistic characters (Trill, Loren, Morgan, Basil) because that’s just my entire niche.
