can we talk about how it’s only after barbie stands in her box and recognizes she doesn’t belong there that she starts to feel inadequate about herself? she tries to put herself back into the confines of men’s expectations (namely those of the owners of the barbie company), tries to force herself to be what she is “supposed” to be, but those expectations and restraints of behavior (the plastic zip ties) which before might’ve felt secure and stabilizing become constricting and entrapping. she panics and escapes, but once she’s run from what everyone expects her to be and has “achieved” the goal of freedom from the oppressive force that is male control, she feels aimless and like her purpose has been stripped from her. what is she without the uncomfortable, difficult, at times impossible standards that had defined her previously? sure, they were terrible, but first she could be defined by those clear-cut (if contradictory and impossible) standards of her character, and then could be defined by the struggle to escape them, and now she is left without any source of externally-imposed identity. the other barbies retain some of their enforced characters, becoming presidents and doctors and lawyers etc, but with nothing else to latch onto that feels familiar to her, she defines herself as a failure — an inadequate, underachieving person with no “reason” to exist. she isn’t pretty (she thinks), isn’t accomplished in a traditional sense, has no easily reference-able title, she just is.

this is why the ending scene is so powerful to me. barbie sees a montage of the lives of people who just are. who exist, in their own right, without necessitating a justification for their existence. women don’t have to explain to men or to themselves why they have a right to exist, or a right to their lives or their confidence. they don’t have to justify living. they can just be, however they choose, enjoying the mundane or the extraordinary in equal measure of happiness, and that is beautiful. barbie sees the mundane, sees the unexplained and the unjustified, and she learns to see it as it is — beautiful, because it is.

Quick breakdowns:

Literally: Leo's spinal fluid + bone marrow was taken against his will because he was a likely match to a rich dude's kid, who due to medical reasons, presumably, needed a donor.

Figuratively (using to be implied): Already established that workers are government property/cogs in a governmental wheel. The DLS is a government department, similar to the department of education or the department of motor vehicles, maybe more aptly. They're leased out to people, but the implication here is that all contracts include clauses that allow for temporary emergency measures to be taken in the event that a medical procedure is deemed clinically necessary. This is seldom invoked. Other implications to this piece include reproductive rights, organ 'donation', etc. How far can/will this go before it's too far? Probably pretty far but who knows.

Strategically: There are, and have been, larger strategic moves at play since the first first chapter in October 2021, I just got a little in the weeds with the whumpy little stories and have kind of fucked off from the greater plot for right now. An additional consideration is I have no idea what I'm doing 80% of the time, with just general plot bunnies in my head that aren't fully fleshed out, some groundwork gets laid here and there and eventually I'll tackle the plot of the thing. But This Evil Doctor was intentionally selected by people for reasons. And Leo was not given anesthetics for reasons. We know that historically, when undergoing really tough medical procedures, workers are generally treated as humans, and pain medicines/anesthetics/etc are generally used, because that much has been established at a few points throughout Leo's history. The bitch of it is that I have not fully fleshed out the details of the strategy, so for now, it sits at, there had to be a reason they wanted him to suffer.

Politically: I think most of these early chapters serve to help Luke understand exactly what is happening and to light a fire under his ass, so to speak. I know fuck all about actual politics so I'm not sure how much individual power senators have but I think it's not that much, but right now they're still in the phase where they're aiming for reform one right at a time and not going HAM on actually upending the thing, however, that's destined to change as soon as I get around to figuring out the smaller details.

This post is just to let folks know I've put the comic sketchbook, and the Cartamanzia card game on hold to focus on other things;

namely, I got a new job which I'm not going to talk on too much but my plans for that is to use it to springboard into teaching arts, which by extension will lead to more arts.

That being said, I'm looking into maybe starting actually making official comics and more full artworks (some for here just based on things I like and my stuff and then also looking to publish actual comics to perhaps a comic hosting site)

As for what this means for those projects it means there might not be some updates on them for a bit. Cartamanzia I still love the general theme and plan to use it in my future works regarless but the actual game rules I'm not in love with so I might scrap the original draft I have after I get some more feedback, As for the comic sketchbook, really depends on my mood and free time, but hopefully, it'll continue in some shape and or form.

im loving the fact that tommy is an established character with established relationships with the 118, just like karen, just like athena, just like maddie, because that was a huge thing that made it a part of why i think it was so hard to like bucks previous love interests.

like, yes. abby and taylor tried to gel with them, ali kinda knew OF them, but natalia was completely seperate and lucy wasnt even really a love interest. neither of the main 2 (abby and taylor) actually had any link to anyone other than buck. taylor was the closest (but she fucked that up badly lmao).

im so hyped to see whether we get more of tommy and the 118, because he has history with all of them, except eddie (who he's now good friends with), and buck (who he is now dating).

if you look at all the other 'partners', they are all a part of the 118 family, and pretty linked together: athena is besties with hen and married to bobby, karen lived across from and was good friends with chimney and is now married to hen, maddie is bucks brother and is married to chimney, etc.

i feel like bucks other love interests were only ever linked to him, and he always worried about losing them, because he didnt think he was good enough.

but this time with tommy the difference is (tommy actually cares about buck) that hes known by his family and hes safe and hes confident and caring and patient, plus the rest of the 118 all think hes a good guy, and also tommy saved bathena and chimney and hes friends with eddie, and christopher likes him, etc.

everybody that matters to buck, except maddie, likes and knows tommy.

maybe buck doesnt have to worry so much about him leaving, like abby did, or worry how to introduce tommy to his family and not have him run for the hills from the complex parts of his life, like natalia or ali did

i just think it's so neat how saitama and genos meeting and living together helped them experience happiness. like, i wouldn't say they're curing each others depression, they still got issues clearly.

but genos was hyperfocused on getting revenge and was like one second away from self destructing if saitama hadn't shown up. he started living a more or less normal life again once he moved in with saitama. he hyperfocused on saitama instead of just getting revenge. he has hobbies now, things he enjoys, even if he mainly just follows saitama and does what he does, i think it's still helpful for his mental health and to get out of that hateful cycle.

meanwhile saitama had a whole internal speech about not feeling anything anymore before meeting genos, and then this young and intense cyborg guy suddenly started following him everywhere and moved in with him. he helps clean and cook and goes grocery shopping with and for saitama. he supports him in everything he does. he adds some excitement and companionship to saitama's life, which had been kinda dull ever since he became so strong.

they both gave each other things to care about and to feel again.

i feel like. oftentimes found family in fiction doesn't need at all to conform to specific 'nuclear family' roles and it's weird to always try and make it do that. that's completely true. but like. on the other hand. sometimes there are specific vibes you're trying to convey about a dynamic or specific labels to put on found family dynamics that get at something specific about that dynamic and sometimes that word is 'sibling' or 'parent' and that's like, also fine and not inherently reductive or shitty or weird or cringe lmao.
