I send you a message yesterday about Lucanis and The Wake and I think I was mistaken. English isn't my main language and on the website the text was in a badly translated french. Like the title we have "L'éveil" that you translate "The awakening"...So I had to reread it in english :/ and sadly it means my boy Lucanis is dead, or Illario think he is Idk (I want to believe >.<). So I'm sorry for my message from yesterday.

Hey there friend, was it this one perchance? 😊 So first of all please don’t worry it’s totally fine, and second of all no I still think there’s something to your original feeling. In my initial gut reactions to reading the English version of the stories, I got the feeling that Lucanis isn’t really dead myself and I still think so. Leaving the Crows sounds like no mean feat (Zevran). Lucanis is not interested in being First Talon, and by the end of his TN story Zara Renata is plotting and resolving to try and get to him and take him down. Maybe he’s grown disillusioned with being a Crow. He does the whole brooding “I’m a killer, I know what I am thing” but you get the impression that there’s more to it than that and he’s written kinda sympathetically, at least for an assassin:

he has standards (e.g. no red lyrium), a soft heart which he tries to hide even from his cousin, and which his enemies i.e. remaining Venatori know they might be able to exploit (his kind treatment of Effe, risking things to free the Magister’s slaves, ending the suffering of the experimented-on people and allowing them to take vengeance), and espouses stuff like loving killing racist evil supremacist Magisters. He says that Caterina is impossible to refuse and can only be prolonged - what if a faked death was the only way to escape that kind of formidable will? And don’t staged deaths kinda go hand-in-hand with assassin-y, subterfuge-y type stories? Like a red herring? There’s Crow intrigue afoot.
