MSP hits every BL trope that i'm so tired of. school setting, main character plays guitar and sings, main character is in a band, band is trying to win A Very Important Competition. love interest is So Charmed by the main character and his one-of-a-kind guitar playing but cannot reveal his crush, gasp, so instead they antagonize each other.

so many BLs fit this? like, all of them??? did i just describe the plot of 2gether? do you really need to watch the 2930730472037th thinly-veiled 2gether remake?

because some genius scriptwriter finally did it right. MSP isn't just a grab bag of tropes and caricatures duct-taped together. it's not just banking on hot actors and smoulders to carry a flimsy story.

it's about a kid, and his friends, and their small but precious dream. it's about a kid looking for understanding and connection, finding it in the most unexpected person, and then doing everything possible to make that person happy. it's about kids and their moms, and what it means to watch your kid grow up, and what it means to grow and change with them. god, it's about FRIENDSHIP, so much goofy stupid lovable friendship. it's about reaching for dreams and failing to grab hold of them and having no regrets anyway.

it's so genuine.

and fuck!!! it's funny!!!!! IT'S SO FUNNY. literally every single gag landed. when they first panned to that chinzilla plushie on the altar i busted a lung laughing. props to the cast and crew for just nailing the comedic delivery and timing.

good pacing, good writing, great characters with complex needs and wants. and fourth and gemini are a fantastic lead pair, they're strong actors and they're so effortlessly comfortable with each other on screen and they're a straight shot of serotonin 🥹🥹🥹 I WOULD KILL FOR THEM

Oh no, I’ve fallen for Paul and Nice. I would take an entire series just about them.

That conversation in the kitchen! The actors are doing so much with the minuscule screen time they’ve been given. A whole entire complex relationship built in three short conversations. I hope this means we’ll continue to get more of them and not return to mostly ignoring their existence like in the first four episodes.

In the end, Hira, the ultimate bullied doormat suffering from stammer and low self esteem, and stalker (which is actually one of Kiyoi's endearments for him) makes Kyoi, the ultimate king, stutter and run after him! Talk about a complete role reversal. He becomes so confident in Kiyoi's love for him and secure about their relationship that he only tells Kiyoi he wants to go somewhere and turns around with a bold little smile, 100% sure that his beautiful man will follow him anywhere.

Not only that, Hira even dares to be openly impatient and boss him around, demanding him to hurry, and Kiyoi literally jumps over a fence to follow him!

What sets My Beautiful Man from almost all BL dramas out there is its insane quality on all the levels, and one of them is the writing, which intricately builds the story and the characters in such a way - they are flawed and imperfect, making them so beautifully and relatably human - that their victories and happy endings always will so wholeheartedly satisfying.

That's because it all feels earned - they suffered for their happiness, changed themselves without losing the sight who they are, and earned the right to be happy.

Soooo this has been in the works for a while. Some fun and self indulgent and silly au that I actually got way too attached to!!! To the point I've actually got a whole outline of a story for it! Going to put it in under the cut :^]

For context: I haven't really decided if this is a completely parallel universe where kris and susie and everyone else has any input on the world. Or if its simply just a year or two early to main storyline stuff. Idk, still thinking, I'll figure it out eventually.

Story time now though! Just as they are in their actual canon story, arrfs is from space! An alien trying to integrate into the Lightner world. Despite pups best efforts over the years, she still manages to wind up without a friend. I'm still heavily workingshopping what exactly their Lightner life was like or how exactly they stumbled into the dark world, all I know is pup gets there somehow!

Once arrfs DOES reach the dark world, pup is absolute terrified. Not only is there no one to tell them what's going on or where they are, but there's also no one to face the unknown with her. Unsure what to make of the change of clothes and new surroundings, pup treks on until- just as she does in the actual deltarune canon- queen pops up out of nowhere to capture her!!! Arrfs instinctually turns into a little tiny worm as a way to hide and defend pupself and queen just accepts it, going "Oh shit lol they disappeared woah. Okay bye."

Skipping ahead a bit bc otherwise we'll be here all day (and also bc I mainly have the meat of this story planned out rather than anything prior)! Arrfs stumbles around cyber city lost and confused after a close run-in with some ambyu-lances. That is, until they find themself in an alleyway. And who else do they find there other than spamton g. spamton himself!!! Instantly picking up on the fact that pup is a Lightner, spamton attempts to lure her into buying one of his wares so that pup may learn to trust him. Which quickly goes south when he realizes that arrfs doesn't have a single cent to their name. He frowns, instead offering her a place to relax. A place to stop running from every Darkner that attempts to approach them. This lands arrfs in spamtons shop, of course! While it seems like a friendly offer, in reality it's mainly offered so that spam has more time to think up a deal. One that would really hook arrfs and ultimately benefit spamton himself.

But then it hits him. This Lighter is lost and confused with nowhere to go and no one to turn to. If he were to hire them with promise of a roof over their head and a place to stay (however low quality and surrounded by garbage it may be), they would not only be a much friendlier face to lure his customers in, but would also come to trust him. THAT'S how you hook a customer and make them into a returning one. That's his ticket into getting into the basement. And to his surprise... arrfs jumps on the idea! Pup's very desperate to get a controlled grip on this world, and most of all, really just to find a friend after all these years. Blissfully unaware of the real nature behind the deal, she seals it.

I'm still working on the exact details of how the rest of it plays out, all I know is that the two actually do wind up becoming genuine friends! Spamton initially was in it for himself, sure, but instead he finds himself so comfortable with the first genuine friendship he's had in years. He fufills his goal of enabling arrfs to be completely trusting of him, but he never figured he would be so trusting of them as well. Not to mention that with all of arrfs help, they've pulled together a bit more of a stable income. She's even encouraged him to create his own art that sells for a much higher price than his normal wares. He almost wants to delay getting his hands on want he wants down in the basement out of fear he may lose all the good he's found. Almost.

And that's what I've got so far! I think it's fun!

Extra design notes!!!

I know I stylized black and gray as blue on spamton btw but that was just the fit the blue theme on the rest of this. Arrfs' cloak is actually just that color blue!

Arrfs is surrounded by butterfly themes in the dark world! I figured that since their themes are mainly focused on grubs and caterpillars outside of the au just as a normal sona, butterflies would be a cool approach to show some kind of change! That's also the shape of their cloak- butterfly wings!

I posted my thoughts on Playboyy on MDL, but I also wanted to get in on the discussion here :)

Playboyy, I think, is something quite special. Before I get into a review though, I want to clarify what Playboyy isn't because I feel this show is getting a bad rap from viewers who came in with false expectations and were disappointed by the reality:

This show isn't really "BL" in the traditional sense. While there is romance, it is not the focus of the show. The romantic relationships frequently take a backseat to the the personal development of characters and the relationships between friends. It is also nowhere near "an idealistic world free of homophobia" (or, as in more modern BL, a world where gay love triumphs over societal homophobia)--it is a very real and harsh world where the characters are hitting rock bottom. Finally, a lot of the NC scenes aren't trying to be sexy or titillating. They function as pieces of the plot and often depicting negative experiences.

I think going into the show with these expectations in mind makes it a better experience. But on with the review:

STORY: I, personally, really loved the story of Playboyy. As someone who has experienced losing friends badly to drug addition, I found Nont's story particularly raw and effective (and, honestly, quite triggering). I thought the decision to use an ensemble cast and a weaving narrative was especially effective in creating a real sense of this disadvantaged and isolated community caused by societal prejudices. It was very satisfying to watch these narratives bump into each other, often in completely accidentally and tragic ways. While I agree some of the story was over the top or hard to follow, I didn't find it particularly detracted from the quality of the show. I like getting a little exaggerated in my narratives and I think it fit with the highly stylized production. While it wasn't a water-tight plot, I think it was probably the strongest script in the past year in terms of really exploring the depths of the characters and their conflicts. None of the characters felt like extras or like they were leaning on tropes. Each individual had their own story to tell and had their moment to shine.

ACTING: The acting in Playboyy is a bit hit and miss. As a stand-out star, Dech is absolutely untouchable. Nant/Nont are a monster of a roll that swings between camp, performative highs and truly raw, exposed lows, and he brought me along with him every step of the way. Really, really impressive work. Shell was a wonderful partner for him, matching him in almost every scene and developing a unique and intriguing chemistry. I also greatly enjoyed any scene with Parm and/or Aun, which always felt very grounded and warm, and was continually impressed by Korn, who managed to maintain a necessary friction between Zouey and the rest of the cast. Beyond these actors, the performance were a little bit shakier. Some of the actors struggled with stilted line deliveries (and I don't mean the English, which I've never had a problem with) or unnatural body language. I was never quite sold on Jack/Chat or Jeffy/Fay as couples, though each actor shined in other areas (such as Chat and Korn's wonderful friendship). In particular, and unfortunately, I found Hymn took a stylized drama and crashed it into melodrama more often than he stuck the landing. That said, I still found this ensemble created a style that played to their strengths well and rarely rendered a scene ridiculous.

PRODUCTION: Production is where this show really, really shines. The lighting is absolutely gorgeous, full of intentional color, harsh shapes, and neon texts. Each arc and couple has their own world and visual language that helps sort out the massive cast and is, quite frankly, beautiful. The highly stylized, theatrical sensibilities also help highlight the moments when humanity comes crashing in and we left very broken characters in plain framing. It's really, really beautiful to watch. I know I'm in the minority here, but I love the costuming of this show. I think the underwear was a phenomenal way to juggle the desire for nakedness with the reality of film-making and the comfort of the actors. If you allow it to, the underwear becomes part of the style and lets the characters exist, naked and vulnerable, without becoming exploitative. I also loved the way fashion (especially Nont's) brought it's own sense of drama and feeling to the characters. Realism clearly wasn't the goal here, and this department delivered.

NC SCENES: Finally, because it has to be talked about, I think the way the NC scenes were stylized were nothing less than brilliant. Playboyy telling a story about the human condition through sex, it is not making porn. When the characters are feeling good and feeling pleasure, the audience is allowed to find the sex scenes hot. But more frequently, the scenes depict a vast variety of other emotions. When Zouey is feeling awkward, nervous, and uncomfortable, the scenes are made awkward with clumsy blocking and…eccentric soundtracks. When characters are being hurt, the scenes are painful and brutal and shocking--escalating quickly and making you wish it would slow down or resolve to something different. It's incredibly effective. I've been very disappointed at the way BL fans discuss sex in this show, as if the only purpose of an NC scene is to provide spicy fanservice for the viewer to get off on. The old Oscar Wilde "Everything in the world is about sex. Except sex, which is about power." definitely holds true here. For these characters, sex that is about their own pleasure is rare and the show mirrors that reality. But that doesn't make the scenes bad or "accidentally" ridiculous. It is an intentional part of the story and, in most cases, very effectively done.

In all, this isn't a show that I would widely recommend to everyone, largely on account of the seriousness of the subject matter. But I am infinitely grateful that this show exists and is pushing the boundaries of what stories are acceptable to tell in BL. I've genuinely enjoyed my time in this world, and I very much look forward to the to be continued. :)

Since I forgot a few: Top 5 Characters You Wanted to Stab

Yes absolutely we cannot leave this list incomplete. Building from where you started, I will add and order from most to least in need of stabbing.

Sangin, Sing My Crush

This absolute piece of shit. If I could stab him to death, resurrect him, and then do it again, I would. Not only did he intentionally fuck with his student's head and then brutally reject him, he also stole his song and then tried to blackmail him with his sexuality. No redemption for you, catch this blade.

Atom, Only Friends

Begging a gay man to fuck you and then leveraging your het privilege to claim he sexually assaulted you? Atom was truly the lowest of the fucking low and he never got what he deserved. If Cheum was a more responsible older sister she would have whooped your ass.

Not, Be My Favorite

What a waste of space this boy was. A classic bully who liked to push people around, embarrass them for his own amusement, and both treat women like shit and then howl about how they don't like him. And don't think we forgot him leveraging Kawi's sexuality against him!

Tae Hyung, The Eighth Sense

Truly just a garbage excuse for a friend. Selfish at every turn, disloyal to the bone, with no redeeming qualities. And he has no swagger! Jae Won's life will be better when he can leave you behind.

August, Last Twilight

Easily the most redeemable on this list, but I still think he could do with a light stabbing to help him learn his lesson.

Note: Atom and Not are both played by the same actor, Title Kirati, and @bengiyo informs me he also played a villain character in Hidden Agenda (which I refused to watch because I had already suffered plenty of Tee Bundit mediocrity this year). Title, I don't know how this typecasting happened to you but I am sorry, my dude.

Ngl, but I will say that The Sign has been failing me for the last 3 episodes and I don't vibe with this series like I did at the beginning. As a matter of fact, I have the impression that episodes 1-5 are completely different than episodes 6-8.

First of all, an explanation: I watch BL series for pure escapism, I really expect nothing else, but to have a nice time watching the romance of beautiful boys 😎 I don't add any high values, any ideology, I don't have ANY high expectations from BL series, I'm an old school fujoshi. Life is shitty as it is, what's happening around us is depressing - I just need a break from reality, which was previously given to me by books, manga, anime, and now mainly by BL series.

If a BL series tries to be something more, gives me something beautiful, deep, that gives me food for reflection and analysis, such as The Eighth Sense, then I treat it as something extra, like an additional bonus, a gift from the benevolent BL gods 😀 I don't take it for granted as something that, idk, has to be there. For me, BL series are supposed to give me a good time, they have to spark joy (and what never ceases to amaze me is how, with such minimal expectations, so many series still can't do even this minimum lol). Despite everything, I can forgive a lot, as long as the couple and their romance make me feel good. Like, A LOT.

The Sign in episodes 1-5 was EXACTLY what I expect from BL series: a killer couple, great chemistry between the actors, an interesting story (even if stupid and chaotic at times). I praised this series for Phaya and Tharn (emphasis on Tharn) and their MANY high-quality scenes together. Their romance was tender and hot at the same time, the attraction between them was visible from the beginning, their relationship developed logically and linearly, the series made me feel joy and hope.

But something broke down from episode 6. The romance went into strange fluctuations, depressive lows and sudden bursts of euphoria, the number of their shared, high-quality scenes decreased dramatically, in episode 6 there were even no such scenes, and in 7 and 8 I counted like 2 of them. I CONSTANTLY GO BACK TO THEIR SCENES FROM EPISODES 1- 5, AND FROM EPISODES 6-8 I ONLY GO BACK TO ONE.

What else I loved about PhayaTharn's relationship was how equal they both are in the relationship. Since episode 6, there is no equality, the person who is constantly striving and fighting for their relationship and constantly giving of himself is Phaya. And only Phaya is shown as someone who even has a nervous breakdown due to being rejected by Tharn. Tharn is shown as if everything he does is calculated coldly, the lack of contact with Phaya is not shown as if it was even some kind of nuisance for him. Tharn became a double victim of the script and the narrative: firstly, because he is a character who is afraid that Phaya will die and therefore rejects him, and secondly, the script is unable to present it in a way that is sympathetic to Tharn. I know that Tharn is afraid. But it's not about what I know, but how I perceive it. And I perceive Tharn with irritation. (in The Eight Sense, Jae Won also rejected Ji Hyun after the accident, but in this case I knew why he did it and in addition, the series presented Jae Won in such a way that my heart bled for him. That's what a good story is, it makes me feel satisfied when looking at the scene and the characters both objectively and emotionally)

Another thing that is starting to take away from my enjoyment of watching this series is the constant leaks and spoilers that suggest a breakup, Tharn's "sacrifice" for Phaya, that somehow karma and Chalathon will win and love and Phaya will lose. Just yesterday I listened to a song sung by Babe and read the lyrics of this song… I'm, ok, like, it's totally not my style lol. This is no longer my escape from reality, reality has caught up with me in my yaoi dream 😂

Saturday was The Sign day for me, I never made any plans just to be able to watch the show when it came out. But guess what, I might have potential plans for this Saturday and after my first reaction of "no, I have to watch The Sign", my second thought was whether I really wanted to watch an episode that would probably be depressing again, with maybe one nice scene, and that's assuming that Phaya will wake up? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I guess I'm not in a rush 😄

I also want to say that on instagram I mostly see stuff about Babe and Billy, and the tag the sign on tumblr is kept alive thanks to the heroic efforts of about 3 good people lol whatever content appears, 90% are scenes from old episodes and from new ones, there are mostly from the love scene. Soooo, I suppose people are not too hyped about recent episodes as well... 🙂

Anyway, I am begging this series to bring back the vibe and way of presenting PhayaTharn's story from its beginnings. I have nothing against angst, tears, even temporary breakups (during the series, NOT at the end). This is how it was in The Eighth Sense, MoD, LoA, To Sir, With Love, and in fucking The Untamed where the breakup lasted for years and The Angst was served in BUCKETS lol. But what I want is for their love to be their strength, for watching them together to give me pleasure and joy. I would like to see more scenes with them, even if they were fighting (not this rejection/ cold days bullshit), but for them to be together and for there to be some good emotions. I want to return to the obsession this series made me feel, to endlessly analyze their scenes together, to blush and squeal like a little girl. And not to wait with increasing dread for the ending like in MODC 😶

(besides, the series just became a little boring and even more chaotic, like, I don't even know (and care for that matter) whose body they pulled out of the water in the last episode and how many open cases they are having at the same time lmao and now there will be also Tharn's personal revenge, this is crazy 😂)

Mizuki - reads smut for fun. Tries to find the dirtiest, nastiest stuff and then just reads it for funsies :)

Kanade - writes yuri fics. They are so horrendously tragic and sad and almost always end painfully. People are sobbing in the comments (she doesn't know why).

Mafuyu - writes smut for fun. I headcanon her as Asexual so she's not personally into it but she finds it fun. She asked Mizuki to beta read for her once but Mizuki's 'advice' was to write "awooga" on every sentence she thought was good.

Ena - writes and reads in equal portions but when she writes she is projecting onto the characters so hard it may as well be a traumadump.

WONDERLANDS X SHOWTIME

Tsukasa - reads angst and ugly sobs every time. He tends to only skim tags instead of reading them all so he accidentally read a Dead Dove: Do Not Eat fic once or twice. He hates them so much but he can't stop until he finishes the story, no matter what. It never ends well.

Emu - reads Dead Dove: Do Not Eat fics on purpose. For fun. Hurt no comfort is her favourite tag right next to Major Character death. Kicks her feet while she reads (having a great time).

Nene - mostly reads chatfics and Found Family fics. She's found them comforting for years. Mostly reads when she's sad.

Rui - this dude is a LIBRARY. He is such a well-rounded reader that you can ask for anything and he's got recommendations, even for fandoms he doesn't read. Nobody's quite sure how he does it. He has, at minimum, 100 tabs open on his phone and 150 tabs open on his computer.

Minori - used to read any and every fic with Haruka in it, but always got flustered halfway through and couldn't finish them. She stopped reading them when she met her in person.

Honami - vaguely knows what fanfiction is, but doesn't really read it. She tried reading some fics about a couple of celebrities she liked, but was a bit weirded out and left it alone since then. She has nothing against people who do read fics, though.

👎🏻 Past-senger - I was excited for but this one but it ended up being unwatchable for me. Cooper and Marc are an interesting pair and I was debating hanging on for them but the production quality ended up being a dealbreaker for me. It’s one of the cheapest looking productions I’ve ever seen, it looks like it was filmed & edited by kindergarteners. The cast + acting is solid but even they couldn’t save it for me. Dropped. 

👎🏻 Love Syndrome - Same goes for this one pretty much. I decided to give it a go because I was curious about Frank’s BL comeback but my god it’s terrible. It’s cheap, the plot is strange and the characters are annoying. And what is up with that wig??? I have no words. I can see how this is a spinoff of Unforgotten Night as the quality is similar but with the difference that I liked Itt and Day a lot better in UN. Instantly dropped.

❗️ The cast for MeMindY’s upcoming BL Wedding Plan has been announced: The lead roles will be played by Sunny Wannarat, Pak Naphat, Fourth Kachen, Donut Supawit, Aya Araphan and Kate Sasitran. The show will feature both a BL and a GL storyline, making it the first MeMindY project to include wlw representation.

It tells the reincarnation story of Phaya & Tharn who were lovers in the past until an incident forced them to part ways. They end up being reincarnated as partners in a Special Investigations Unit. 

❗️ A third season for the compilation BL Close Friend has been announced titled Soju Bomb. The season will feature new actors and tells the story of a group of 5 young men who dream of becoming idols in Korea but fail before their debut. Before returning to Thailand they get drunk together when unexpected events transpire. 

❗️ After the Korean company Number 3 Productions announced their new series I, a Gangster, Became a High Schooler (which was going to feature Yoon Chan Young amongst others), it was revealed that the BL element will be removed from the plot and it will be turned it into a bromance-themed series. This upset many viewers as the original story tackles various important lgbt topics such as self-acceptance, friendship, bullying and more.

It's been a while. April to be exacly but I thought I would do a post again.

Home School

The only non BL show I am currently watching and it's really good. Pennueng is totally my favorite character and I want to protect him at all cost.

House Of Stars

It's messy. The plot that is. But in my opinion the good kind. Pawin is by far my favorite character. And they did such a good job with the casting for that. Also the chemistry of the actors who play Pawin and Korn is really good.

La Pluie

My favorite airing BL at the moment. I just love the soulmate trope. And I like how they are tackling it here.

Shigatsu no Tokyo wa

I said I was going to prioritize J-BL's this year. And for the ones that interested me I totally did. So far 2 eps in this is really cute. Now let's wait how the FWB plot is going to turn out. Will we get a lot of angst?

Tie The Not

Pinoy BL! It's been a while since I have watched one. This is a shorter one. Only 8 eps of 15 min. I am not expecting much quality wise. So far this has been pretty funny.

The list for upcoming shows in July I wan to watch is long. So kill me now. I will be super busy.

Be Mine Superstar (3 July, Viki, IQ)

JaFirst in another BL? I can't wait. The trailer did however look a bit to comedic for me. But we will see.

Minato Coin Laundry 2 (5 July, Gaga)

I am not really a fan of season 2's but I liked the first season of this so I will tune in for season 2. Let's see if they don't screw this up.

 Low Frequency (8 July, IQ)

Let's see how this Kantana BL is going to play out. Im not expecting a masterpiece but I hope it's atleast decent. Can't wait to see Guitar on screen. From participating in a survival show to try and get in a boyband to starring in a BL.

Hidden Agenda (9 July, YT)

Plot wise this is kinda basic but it's JoongDunk so I will watch! Let's hope they get another BL next year and it's something completely different.

Laws Of Attraction (15 July, One31)

I am definitly here for more JamFilm. They are really good actors. And I love mature plot lines. And I trust One31 on the quality.
