a week ago we visited #aschaffenburg, which is situated in the region of #lowerfranconia, upper #bavaria. it's just a 45 minute drive from wiesbaden, and let's just say, it's a shame i haven't visited this city earlier. johannisburg castle with its adjacent park overlooks the main river dramatically, and the old city core of the city is very charming as well! we visited during a very stormy day, but that didn't stop us from enjoying this gorgeous city! it's probably even more breathtaking during warmer seasons! i did enjoy finding many sculptures of local sculptor helmut massenkeil, raw and whimsy in their execution! that might even warrant an extra post at some point. #pompejanum #stiftsbasilikastpeterundalexander #christianschadmuseum #stagathakirche #helmutmassenkeil #schöntalpark (hier: Aschaffenburg, Germany) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpIikUPNkwh/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Things I Know About Wurzburg, Germany

I have called the place home since 2014.

130,00 people live in Wurzburg.

There are 13 Municipalities or districts called Stadtbezirke, I live in the smallest one named Lindleinsmühle. I call it a neighborhood because it is smaller than the neighborhood I grew up in Orlando, Florida.

There is a wiki for Wuerzburg called https://wuerzburgwiki.de/ the whole site is in German but if you add the Google Translate extension to your browser you can read about each topic in your native language. The wiki is far more extensive than Wikipedia.

Wurzburg was destroyed at the end of World War 2.

Wurzburg is in Northern Bavaria, but the culture is Franconian

There is a fortress overlooking the city, the fortress is called Festung Marienberg. I read on a plaque on the climb up to the Marienberg that Swedes were able to take the fortress; at some point in the Thirty Years War. There is a video game that depicts this. 

The most picturesque statute and the one with the most taken pictures in the city are of St. Kilian on the Old Main Bridge.

Saint Kilian was an Irish missionary that settled in Würzburg with two companions. He told a royal that he was violating scripture because of who he married, to which, the wife responded by having him beheaded in the main square of Wurzburg. His two companions suffered the same fate. There is a string of bakeries in Wurzburg with his namesake Kiliansbäck.

The Alte Mainbrücke or Old Main Bridge is sometimes simply called the wine bridge because wine is sold on the bridge and it is a popular spot to hang out, drinking wine, enjoying the view of the city.

I have it on good authority by way of hearsay that Wurzburg has one of the warmest climates in the country. Could be simple lore I've never really bothered to check.

It's both a UNESCO city and a student city.
