Royal Pains of Uncertainty
@breannasfluff’s Finish the Prompt LU style - Angst
In bold is what Breanna wrote for the prompt. The rest is my own writing. I’m used to only writing in past tense so it was a fun challenge to write in present tense. Making Wild be a bit self-deprecating in this for the extra  layer of angst. Also a lot of repetition. And yelling. I am also not used to writing angst. Everyone makes up in the end because I cannot write sad endings for anything.
The crack of an open palm on a face has Wild whipping around. Legend clutches his cheek, already blooming red, and Hyrule lets his hand fall. His fists are balled to his side and his chest heaves.
The two were in an argument before this that was rapidly growing more heated, but what could have led to this? Hyrule usually comes across as meek compared to the others on the Chain.
Yet Legend is shrinking into himself, like something the traveler said hurt him more than the slap.
“What happened?” Wild asks as he joins them. What could Legend have done to make Hyrule so upset?
Hyrule opens his mouth to answer before shutting it in an instant. He huffs, clenching his hands even harder as he whips around, stomping off towards the edge of the camp.
“Hey, Hyrule-Link, Wait!” Wild shouts out,but Hyrule ignores him. The traveler sits down against a tree, burying his head in his knees, gripping them tightly.
Wild looks over at Legend, the pained look he had now gone, replaced with a blank stare as his hand lightly grazes his hurt cheek. Legend suddenly straightens up, looking off into the quarter distance. Wild thinks about reaching out to him, but his hand likely would’ve gotten slapped away anyways.
Legend inhales sharply and shakily, softly cupping his own cheek and walking silently towards the center of the camp. He sits down on one of the logs and buries his face in his hands.
Wild was now alone, a few mushrooms in hand. He was just scavenging for them, wanting to make something nice for the three of them. The others had gone out to investigate a nearby dungeon, the three of them staying behind to keep an eye out for anything suspicious. They all promised to make sure that nothing bad would happen between the three of them.
And look at what happened when Wild broke that promise. He’d just tuned the other two out when they started arguing, because it’s not like it would lead to anything big right? Wild was a fool. He knows this well. He’s the greatest fool out of the group, surely.
That didn’t make it so he couldn’t fix the mess he could’ve stopped, however.
Food is the key to heart, as they say, and Wild already has some mushrooms quite literally in his hands, so he should make food with it, like he planned to. He also happens to have some rock salt in his Sheikah Slate. Salt-grilled mushrooms it is then!
Walking over to the cooking pot that was thankfully already set up, Wild gets to work, humming all the while. He notices Legend looking at him over to his left from the nearby log, head slightly upturned and eyes peaking through his fingers. His eyes were red and wet, clearly having been crying. A lot. Crying so quietly that even the moss he was sitting upon couldn’t have heard him. A skill no one should have to master, yet there Legend was. Wild’s heart stung at the sight, so he gave the veteran a little wave and smile to cheer him up, even only slightly, but the veteran immediately hid his face again.
Wild sighs and turns back to his food. He was a fast cook and this was such a simple dish, so he was almost done already. Looking up and over to where Hyrule is, he was still in the same position, but his head was up and looking away from the camp. Was he crying as well? Quietly as well? Was it a skill well mastered between the two? What had happened between them? Before all of this even? Who was in the wrong and who was in the right? Why did they have to be crying so quietly?
Well, Wild was definitely in the wrong for not paying attention to the other heroes. That was on him. But what in Hylia’s good name are they even fighting about? It was frustrating for him, to not know what was going on between his friends. His crying, heartbroken friends.
But now it was food time.
“Heeeey there Leggy boy,” Wild coos out to his nearby comrade. Said comrade looks up at Wild in confusion, a vague effigy of a smirk on his face. “Wanna have some salty shrooms? That have been grrriiiled?” The oddness of Wild’s current way of speaking makes Legend smirk even more, which was the intended outcome. Sometimes, random is funny. Sometimes.
“Yeah,” Legend answers as his voice cracks, “That’s fine, thanks.”
“No problem friendo,” Wild gives Legend a nice, hot plate of salt-grilled mushrooms. He prepares a plate for himself and a plate for Hyrule. There was a little extra, still in the pot, which was all going down Wild’s throat, obviously.
Holding onto Hyrule’s plate, Wild stands up and calls out to the pouting Link. He knows he was pouting because when the traveler turned around, he was indeed pouting. Hyrule says nothing and does nothing after that. Just blinks blankly at him. With his red, wet eyes.
Wild tries to call out to Hyrule again, taking a few steps towards him, “Heya Rules, you what else rules?” No reaction. “Food! Want some salt-grilled mushrooms? They’re salty~”
Hyrule mumbles something back before looking away. This was going to be harder than he thought.
“Mister traveler,” Wild speaks in a singsongy voice, continuing to walk closer, “it’s eating time~. You need lots of food to grow big and strong~”
More mumbling from Hyrule. A bit louder this time, but Wild still has no idea what he’s saying. Wild groans. He gets even closer.
“I guess you just like acting like a big baby, don’t you?” Wild jokingly scoffs, “And here I thought you were an adult-“
“SHUT UP!” Hyrule screams, whipping his head around. His face is contorted with rage, glaring eyes seething with a rage Wild had never seen from his friend before. Directed at him before. The fury was short lived, Hyrule’s face almost immediately turning into one of regret. But the image was now burned into Wild’s mind, a clear, permanent picture.
Hyrule turns away from him again, the mumbled sorry I’m so sorry he repeats on and on reaching Wild’s ears. But Wild can’t get himself to say anything back. Opening and closing his mouth like a dying fish. A foolish fish that managed to beach himself on a single piece of sand in the middle of the ocean.
Wild’s face was hot. His hands hurt from how tightly he’s clutching what’s supposed to be Hyrule’s plate. Food, food’s the answer to everything. Yes, Wild just needed to make more food. He was the cook of the group. He’s the cook, yes. That’s what’s he good at, cooking, cooking food. The answer to everything. The key to the heart.
Wild walks back to the cooking pot. He sets the plate off to the side and eats his own food, both on his own plate and from the pot. It needs it to be empty after all, if he wanted to make more food. The mushrooms are good, but they were more salty than usual. He can’t see them that well, but that was okay. Food is the key to the heart, and healer of the soul. Wild continues to eat. He’s a quick eater. He’s finished in no time. He’s still hungry.
An angry shout erupted from the left of Wild. Legend throws himself off of the log, and as Wild rubbed his blurry eyes, he could still see the veteran’s furious face as clear as day. But he wasn’t angry at him, no, thankfully no. Legend stomps over to Hyrule, hunched slightly forward, hands clenched into fists. Hyrule shot up, a less angry look on his face, fear and unease filling in for where the rest of the anger would’ve gone.
“You’re a fucking jackass, you know that?” Legend spits at Hyrule, jabbing his finger into the traveler’s chest. Hyrule sputters, anger consuming the fear that had previously held its space.
“You’re the jackass here!” Hyrule shoots back, “You’re the one who started all of this!”
“You know what? Yeah, I did, I know that DAMN WELL!” Legend grips onto Hyrule’s tunic, “At least I wasn’t the one to make Wild CRY! YOU DID!” No, they can’t fight now, Wild didn’t get to make his food, his great food, the key to the soul food. Hyrule’s tearing up, Legend’s tearing up, it’s all Wild’s fault.
No.
No no no.
He can fix things. He was going to fix things.
With a soft, quiet voice, Wild starts to speak, “Al-“ his voice cracks, “Alright you two, break-“ he coughs, “-break it up.”
The two don’t hear him, it seems, as Hyrule begins to snap back. Wild doesn’t want to hear it. He can’t hear his friends be so angry at each and not even know why.
Hyrule shoves Legend away, hard. He stumbles back, surprise quickly being overtaken by even more anger. Hyrule starts to yell, “Well, YOU’RE a DAMNED asshole who-“
“BOTH OF YOU! SHUT! UP!” Wild screams, jumping up and accidentally snapping his wooden plate in half in his rage. It was fine, he had more plates. Sky’s okay with making more plates. Wild had no more patience for these two, however. His throat hurts. Yet he continues, “I am SICK! TIRED! Of the two of you acting like THIS!” The other two flinch in fear, their anger for each gone, albeit temporarily.
Wild was fixing things. Wasn’t he? He had to be, he’s going to fix things.
“Look, I don’t know what bullshit you two were spewing at each other, but can’t you two at least TRY to talk things out like GOSH. DAMN. REASONABLE PEOPLE?!” His throat hurts, his cheeks hurts, he was hurting. But not as much as his friends were hurting. He’s going to fix things.
“This isn’t cute, this isn’t a funny little hoo-ha, people are angry, people are sad, because you two! Who just…can’t be a degree of CALM! Do you understand what I’m saying? Do you?!”
They both nod, but they don’t seem to really understand. Wild is so very frustrated. He hates being so frustrated. He’s going to fix things. He has to.
“Alright, the both of you are going to sit down, right now.” The two shuffle in place, nervously unmoving. Why. Why are they like this? “You two don’t have to sit together, just sit the FUCK DOWN!” Now they rush to their seats, on logs opposite to each other, Legend to his left, Hyrule to his right.
Wild sighs, sitting down and rubbing his temples. He speaks in soft voice like before, so he wouldn’t hurt his throat any further, “I’m sorry for yelling at you two,” he looks at the both of them, who both refuse to look at each other, “And for being rude and mean to the both of you. I shouldn’t have done that, I just-I had felt like I wouldn’t be heard if I didn’t. I was worried someone would get hurt.” Hyrule recoils in on himself, hugging his knees in shame. No, he can’t let them get sad. Food. The key to the heart.
“Alright!” Wild claps his hands, “You pouting mcpout are going to eat your…” Wild looks up at the sky, deeming it to be almost nighttime, “…dinner. Yes, dinner. Leg’, did you finish you dinner?”
“N-no, I haven’t,” Legend responds in a similarly soft voice, “I’ll…I’ll do that now.”
“Good! Now Hyrule,” Wild shoves Hyrule’s plate at him, holding it in place until the traveler finally straightens up and takes it. “Make sure you eat up! And after this, you’ll get to have some cake! Carrot cake! Cake that’s made from carrots.” Wild gives them both a deranged smile as he happily waves his hands as he goes on about carrot cakes. He feels a bit loony right now, loony and tired. He’s not even sure why he suggested carrot cake, but that’s what he’s making now. Carrot cake.
Some Endura carrots, goat butter, cane sugar, and Tabantha wheat. For cake, carrot cake-
“I’m going ducking insane,” Wild groans, running his hands down his face.
“Ducking?” Legend scoffs lightly, a soft smile on his tear-stained face.
“I think I’ve sworn too much today,” Wild shifts into a thinking pose, “Swearing too much can devalue the feelings swearing can bring.”
“Philosophy’s fun,” Hyrule mumbles as he eats.
“Don’t talk with you mouth full huU-ugh, no, I can’t say that,” Wild says as he puts the ingredients into the pot, “I sound too much like a mom.”
“Yeah, you’re not Sky,” Legend teases. They all get a good laugh out of that. A long moment of silence occurs between the three of them after that. It’s not a bad silence, but it’s not really comfortable either. Nevertheless, Wild gets to cooking. He hums the same old tune he’d always hum. He doesn’t remember why this tune was the one he always defaulted to. Was it important to him before, all those years ago? Maybe once this is over, all of this is over, Zelda would tell him. But that was a long way aways from now. Now, he was making cake for his friends. Carrot cake. He wouldn’t be able to eat this cake for a while after this. Or probably any cakes. Or carrots.
“I think I’m starting to dislike c-words,” Wild mumbles aloud, “They’re making me loose my mind.”
“Do you...” Hyrule trails off a bit, plate almost empty now, “Do you want to make something else?”
“Nope. I’m making…this, and then we’re each going to eat a third of it cut into threes, and then you two will talk through you problems. Like adults.” The last word comes out harsher than he intended, but the two didn’t react much, Hyrule continues to eat his food and Legend sits politely, plate clean, awaiting cake.
Wild tries to empty his mind before he does something bad to the food before him.
Wild cheers when the cake is finally done. He makes grabby hands at his fellow heroes’ plates, much to their collective amusement. Legend gives him his plate first, receiving three slices of cake, as promised. Hyrule next, receiving his third of the cake.
“I would’ve given ya one slice at a time, but then I’d probably eat the rest of it,” Wild laughed, scratching the back of his head. Chuckles came from the other two, who then focus on their respective plates of foods. Wild focus on his. His stomach churns as he begrudgingly eats the slices, one by one, slower than he normally would. He still finishes far before the other two.
Wild rests his head on his knees, closing his eyes. The small fire underneath the pot encourages him to sleep. Fire always made him sleepy. But he couldn’t sleep yet, he needed to fix things.
No. He didn’t need to fix things. They had to fix things. The ones who were arguing. Wild can nudge and prod them all he wants, but only they could make things right with each other.
He slows his breath. He relaxes his limbs. He’s wide awake, but his friends don’t know that. To them, Wild’s sleeping soundly. He hears the sounds of wooden utensils cutting through the soft cake, scratching the wooden plate. Sounds of them chewing and swallowing food, of their shoes’ slight movements against the short grass, of the soft breeze that barely moves their hair. A few minutes pass before anyone speaks.
“Legend,” Hyrule speaks up, “I’m…I’m sorry.”
Legend inhales, sharply, before speaking back, “Don’t be. We both know I started this.”
“But still-“ Hyrule pauses after his volume starts to increase, and Wild feels his worried gaze cast upon him. Hyrule lowers his voice, “Still, I went too far. We both know this.”
“You didn’t go far enough,” the words tumbled out of Legend’s, a sharp inhale stopping more from coming out. A few more breaths, and he continues, “I shouldn’t have said you weren’t worthy of a throne.”
A throne? Wild doesn’t move, but he yearns to inch forward, to perk up his ears. But they don’t need him right now, he’s done enough.
“I don’t even know why I asked you that,” Hyrule sighs, “I just suddenly remembered something …and want to ask you about it I guess.”
“…What did you remember?”
“I…there’s something that Impa, my Impa said at the start of my second adventure,” Hyrule takes a deep breath, in and out, “she said her and her family have been ‘waiting for a great king to come’ for generations, to save Princess Zelda.”
“So you feel pressured to be that great king?”
“A bit, a bit yeah. I…know I’ll be a king, eventually. I uh, really like…Zelda.”
“Oh. Ah. Now is not the right time for teasing.”
“I can tell by your face that you really want to,” Hyrule giggles, “but yeah, that’s…why I was concerned about being a king.”
“And you came to me.”
“Well…I figured you’d know more than Wild,” very true, Wild knows nothing about this stuff, “so I wanted to ask you. Because I…trust you.”
A long silence passes between them. Wild wants to speak up, but he can’t. He’ll mess everything up if he does.
“You…” Legend starts, “No, no I shouldn’t say you shouldn’t trust me. That’s not my choice to decide.”
“…I still trust you, you know that?”
“…I trust you too.”
Another long silence. Happier now.
“I’m a prince,” Legend drops out of nowhere. Well it felt like it was out of nowhere, and Hyrule and Wild couldn’t stop themselves from yelling.
“What?!” The two shout in unison, Hyrule yelping at Wild.
“You-you’re awake?!” Legend asks, befuddled.
“Ha ha, yeah, barely,” Wild awkwardly smiles  at the other two, “Bold of you to assume I was asleep. You know I snore.” He only snores sometimes, but that wasn’t important. “Anyways, you’re a prince? How that happen?”
Legend looks over at Wild, then at Hyrule, back and forth a few times before sighing.
“Zelda’s my half sister,” Legend said plainly, “I know the trails, and the tribulations that royalty have to go through. I’ve been through some of those things, but I’m grateful that I don’t have to. I just-“ Legend huffs out a small sob, not quick enough at covering his mouth. Hyrule tries to reach out to him, but Wild stops him. He shakes his head softly, ‘not yet’ his eyes tell the traveler. He nods back, retracting his hand and they both await Legend’s next words with bated breath.
“I don’t want you to go through all that pain. And you know me, I’m snarky, I’m the mean, rude one, I’m not good at sentimentality,” Legend runs his hands through his hair, “That’s why I just-waved you off and got so angry when you kept insisting on being a king. I said a lot of hurtful things I clearly shouldn’t have. I’m sorry Hyrule, I really, really am.”
“It’s okay Legend,” Hyrule smile softly at him, “I forgive you. It’s okay you got angry, I understand why you got angry. I know I shouldn’t have gotten angry.”
“No no, you definitely deserved to be angry Rules-“
“I didn’t deserve to HIT you!” Hyrule shouts, throwing his hands up in the air before running them over his face, “I hit you, you never deserved that.”
To both the surprise of both Hyrule and Wild, Legend starts to laugh maniacally at this.
“Sorry, sorry, I just-it’s fine. Don’t worry about it Rulie,” Legend smiles at Hyrule.
“I think you’re downplaying this a bit,” Wild interrupts, to his own surprise, “Even if you don’t care, Hyrule here definitely does.”
“But it’s fine-“
“I don’t think it’s fine!” Hyrule also interrupts him, “We’re not supposed to hit each other because of things like this! You can say you forgive me or don’t-that’s okay, but don’t tell me not to worry about when you’rethe one who got hurt. You just don’t want me to worry about you!”
Legend looks surprised at this outburst, before laughing yet again. Calmer now, gentler.
“Yeah, you’re right. I don’t want you to worry. I don’t like people having to worry about me, or having to worry about others.”
“Well, that’s too bad,” Hyrule says in such a way that makes the other two laugh. He laughs too, whether or not he understands why doesn’t matter. “Are you feeling okay Legend, does it still hurt?”
“Of course not, I’m fine-“
“But are you reeeeaaallllyy fine?” Wild dramatically learns over to Legend, who snickers before playfully shoving Wild away.
“Yes, I’m fine, really. It doesn’t even sting anymore. Hyrule’s not that strong.”
“H-hey!” Hyrule’s cheeks turn pink as he pouts. They all laugh.
The tense atmosphere that was here before was now long gone. Things were back to the happy way they were before, with a few more lessons learned.
The stars smile at them as Wild pulls them all into a group hug.

like starlight in the rain
my entry for @breannasfluff's finish the prompt challenge! the prompt is in italics with my additions below the cut, and you can find the link to the full fic here (and at the bottom lol)
'What happened?' Wild asks as he joins them. What could Legend have done to make Hyrule so upset?
"No," Hyrule says, hands shaking. Ignoring Wild. "No, you can't— you don't mean it."
"Rulie, I—" Legend reaches out, snaps his hand back when Hyrule flinches. "I didn't, I swear, I didn't—"
"Tell me you don't regret it." Hyrule's voice is low, wavering. "Tell me you don't regret me."
Wild steps forward, hands up. Everyone is falling quiet around them, afraid to step in, and some part of him thinks that he shouldn't. That this is a conversation that needs to be seen through. But
But not like this, the rest of him thinks.
"I'm sorry," Legend says, hasty and too fast and he's running into the woods before Wild can say anything, before he can reach out and get Legend to wait.
Silence drops like a hammer. Wild knows he should run after Legend, but his feet are heavy as lead and his heart feels cold, empty.
Hyrule drops to a crouch, burying his face in his hands.
"I'm an idiot," he hisses into his palms. "Wild, I'm a fucking idiot."
"He'll be back." Time is calm, steady, as he walks over and rests a hand on Hyrule's back. "He will."
Hyrule doesn't look up. Wild crouches next to him, wishing he could get his hands to move. To say anything.
He'll wonder, eventually, how Time was so calm. How Wind was so chipper, once they began to set up camp. How Wars just sat there, watching the forest with no plans to begin a search. He'll wonder why he stays crouched next to Hyrule, why they didn't move at all.

Indescribable
Short fic based on @breannasfluff's finish the prompt challenge :) first part, in italics, is Breanna's work. I wrote the second half.
(Tried to match the style and tense but oops in advance.)
-------
Hyrule wipes his forehead and turns to Wild with hopeful eyes. “So? How did I do?”
Wild’s face does this funny thing where it goes through too many emotions at once and ends up scrunched. “Well…six fires in just three hours is your personal best! The only problem is that we’re making fruit salad…”
“I need to cook the fruit!”
“Well, about that...”
“And then there’s that sauce you wanted me to add to it.”
“Which is…warmed in a pan.”
“And don’t get me started on the whipped cream!”
They both turn to look at the jar which once held cream and now holds…chuchu jelly. And maybe some butter.
It’s at this moment that Legend walks in and freezes, sniffing the air. “Do I even want to know?”
“Ledge!” Hyrule grabs a spoonful of something from his bowl and holds it out. “Taste this and tell me what you think!”
The veteran is dubious, but at a nod from Wild, accepts the spoon. Then his face scrunches up because it tastes–
Indescribable.
Indescribable is the word that comes to mind.
Sweet, innocent Hyrule is staring at him with bright, hopeful, expectant eyes, and yet the only word that comes to mind is "indescribable".
No, Legend tells himself sternly, he should at least try to describe the situation happening inside his mouth. If the scattering of pots and pans, the strong odour of burnt cabbages in the air (why?) and the heavy dusting of flour and cinnamon on Hyrule's clothing are any indication, his successor worked hard to produce that deeply indescribable taste. He should at least provide some form of feedback.
Reluctantly, he looks down at the bowl Hyrule is holding, on the off chance that it will offer up some further clues. The ominous sludge inside is a murky, greyish brown, splotched with brackish oil, and right in the middle, Legend thinks he can see...
"Is that... a tentacle?" he asks unwillingly.
Hyrule appears genuinely startled at the question. "Huh?!"
"I think it's a spicy pepper," Wild observes casually from the side. He reaches over with a spare wooden spoon and scoops the offending produce out for inspection. Sure enough, the bright red monster part is revealed and re-identified as a large, whole chilli.
For some reason.
"So?" Hyrule prompts eagerly. "How does it taste?"
"Uh," says Legend. He fishes for relevant words. "Spicy? I guess?"
"You guess?" a crestfallen Hyrule asks.
"Maybe he needs another taste?" Wild suggests sweetly.
And now that Legend's actually looking, he can't help but notice the distinctly vindictive edge to that smile. Obviously, that little shit is in on it. So Legend, of course, does the only thing he can do in that situation.
He lies.
"It's great, Roolie," Legend says cheerfully. "Might be the best thing I've ever tasted. Did Wild teach you how to cook that?"
Hyrule beams. "Yeah!" he replies, in tandem with Wild's emphatic, "No."
They look at each other - Hyrule with confusion and Wild with incredulity.
"Guess Wild still has a lot to learn then," Legend concludes. He claps Hyrule lightly on the shoulder, gives a small, encouraging nod, and rapidly evacuates the premises - a well-trusted problem-solving technique that is yet to fail him, even once.
Left behind to double-guess his scientific method, Hyrule can only glance mournfully at Wild. "That bad, huh?"
"...Let's just start again from the top. Alright?"

@breannasfluff - Finish the Prompt: LU Style!
Fluff <3
Hyrule wipes his forehead and turns to Wild with hopeful eyes. “So? How did I do?”
Wild’s face does this funny thing where it goes through too many emotions at once and ends up scrunched. “Well…six fires in just three hours is your personal best! The only problem is that we’re making fruit salad…”
“I need to cook the fruit!”
“Well, about that…”
“And then there’s that sauce you wanted me to add to it.”
“Which is… warmed in a pan.”
“And don’t get me started on the whipped cream!"
-good… Legend had frozen in place. He looks down at the spoon and blinks a few times because this didn't taste burnt like the rest of the room smelled.
Hyrule frowned assuming the worst from Legend's pause. Wild smiled sympathetically at Hyrule and put a hand on his shoulder, ready to go into mother cuccoing mode.
“It's.. it's good, Hyrule.”
Wild and Hyrule matched Legend's previous expression of shock. “What?” Wild didn't mean to sound like he didn't have any faith in the meal.
Legend offered the spoon and Wild took it with more haste than he intended. He scooped out some of the concoction. The second it hit his mouth he was almost overwhelmed by it. Somehow, it was sweet with a bit of salt, a little tangy, probably from the chu chu jelly but the fruit had no burnt taste to it despite being charred in some places. “It has a weird aftertaste but it really is good.”
Hyrule was almost vibrating with excitement. “Really? You really think so?” Wild offered him the spoon. Hyrule tasted it and a moment later wrapped his arms around Wild.
Wild smiled and hugged him back. “You did good, Rulie.”
Legend put a hand on Hyrule's back. “Maybe we can learn some things from you. I mean, I want to know how you accomplished this, both of you. If I didn't know any better, you stole this from the castle!”
Hyrule looked up at Legend, his eyes watering. Legend jerked his hand away. Had he said something wrong? No, because in the next moment, Hyrule had launched himself off of Wild and pulled Legend into a crushing hug. “Thank you.”
Legend smiled and hugged Hyrule in return. “Shouldn't be thanking me for the truth.”
Wild joined their hug a moment later, wrapping an arm over each of them. “You should join us next time, Legde! Your ice rod would have helped us a lot.”
Legend glanced over to the burnt pots before closing his eyes and relaxing. “I can see that.. maybe I will.”

“You were right, smart pants.”
“I was?”
Glancing at the file in Dean’s hands you cock a brow. He’s smirking, sitting onto your desk, leaning close to your ear.
“The daughter was the mother of the baby but here comes the sick part. The father is also the grandfather.” Dean is scrunching up his nose in disgust. “Sick bastard abused his daughter.”
“Fuck! I remember where I saw this picture! It was a crime-scene photo. During my profiling training in Quantico, we tried to solve old cases, unsolved cases. There was a family, murdered in 1987. The mother was holding a doll instead of the baby but everything else was correct.”
You pinch the bridge of your nose, trying to remember more details.
“Anything else you can remember?” Dean gets his phone out, sending Charlie a message to let her dig out all murder cases of 1987 if needed.
“The whole family got slaughtered except for the baby; the little girl was gone without a trace. We assumed the killed took the baby after he or she killed the family. The only difference the crime scene looked like it was a scene straight out of a slasher movie. Blood all over the walls, the clothes where blood-soaked, and the cuts were not precise as the ones our killer made.”
“Figures. Our victims were drugged, unconscious and didn’t fight back. I guess the other family fought for their lives.” Dean is scratching his chin, waiting for more information coming to your mind.
“The name of the family was Stark, I think. Mother, father, son, and daughter got slaughtered. The baby was missing, tho. According to the files, the police never found her. Everyone believed she’s dead too.” Opening your browser, you access a hidden FTP server.
“Son of a bitch! You’ve got a nice secret server?” Dean whispers and you chuckle lightly. “Bad girl.”
“Hmm…I do not trust anyone. Back then everyone tried to solve the case, but no one wanted to follow my idea.” You shrug opened the folder with old cases.
“You’ve got the whole file? Smart pants, I love you.” Dean gets behind your chair, leaning closer to get a better look at the file.
“I always uploaded interesting cases to my secret server. I didn’t share my ideas until I had a breakthrough, Dean. I always assumed something was off with this case and that the baby is still alive.” You explain opening the crime-scene photos.
“Shit, you’re right. Same modus operandi but that killer was a slaughter, not a surgeon as our perpetrator. See the wounds at the father’s hands? He fought with all his strength against his attacker, just like the mother. I guess she wanted to save her children.”
Dean’s eyes drift toward a picture of a photo frame and he freezes. “Look at this. Same pattern. Mommy is holding the baby but only the daughter is looking lovingly at the little girl in her mother’s arms. God, don’t tell me Stark was abusing his daughter too.” Dean curses starting to pace around your desk.
“We can’t know that for sure, Dean. The cases are similar in a few points, but our killer can’t be the same as the one killing the Starks. I guess it’s someone close to the family Stark, or someone knowing about this case…” Trailing of you see Miller waving at you, showing you the files, you ordered.
“More files, smart pants?” Dean groans hating research with every fiber of his body. “Yay…research…”
“Dude, we need to check for possible victims. I believe someone knew about the abuse in this family. Maybe someone reported it. I got all anonymous reports about sexual abuse of the last two years.”
“Research…I hate research.”
“Dean. We need to find a trace who knew about the abuse and that Louise was the mother of her brother. The cases are too similar for someone not knowing about the abuse.” Your fingers start shaking at the thought both girls got abused by their fathers.
“You okay, Sweetheart?” Dean asks sitting onto your desk once again. His hand covers yours, squeezing it tightly. “Tell me what’s wrong.”
“I loved my dad; he was a good man. I could never imagine the betrayal Louise must’ve felt when he…” Sighing you look at another picture. “The families, the modus operandi. Everything matches Dean. We need to analyze Janet’s blood and compare it with her missing sister’s hair examples.”
“You think the samples are still usable?” Dean’s eyes drift toward the pictures once again, shuddering at the sight of the dead baby in Louise’s moms’ arms. “Why did our perpetrator kill the baby too? Doesn’t make sense if he wants to copy this old case, Y/N.”
Glancing at the pictures in Dean’s hand you nod, not knowing the answer yet. There’s something about this case letting cold shivers run down your spine.
“I know this is a big difference. Let me play this in my head. The baby, the missing girl should be thirty-two now. What if…” You say playing with your pen, closing your eyes to walk through the crimes-scene in your mind.
“You think the baby could be the killer - right, smart pants?”
“I don’t know yet. But who else should be interested to arrange a crime scene like that? The cops investigating the case are all dead by now, just like the forensics. No one involved in this case is still alive.”
“We should head back home, eat a slice of pizza and have a beer. We can grab the files and do my beloved research while eating hot pizza.” Dean suggests while his stomach rumbles.
“I guess my partner from hell is hungry…” Slapping Dean’s thigh you chuckle, giving him a wink. “Let’s roll then…”
----
“I never thought there are so many anonymous reports about sexual abuse. There are so many sick guys out there, makes me want to vomit. A father should protect his child, not hurt…”
“I know, Dean. I worked for the special victim’s unit for a while.”
Dean’s eyes meet yours as you give him a cracked smile. “Must’ve been tough.”
“There are bad people or rather sick people out there, Dean. Not everyone is as nice as your brother, Bobby and you. Bad things happen to innocent people, that’s the reason I’m doing this job, the reason I won’t give up.”
Dean’s eyes lit up watching you leaning your head against his shoulder, as you pat his thigh. He’s covering your hand with his larger one, squeezing it tightly.
“You’re not alone, you’ve got your partner from hell. We will find this monster and arrest him just like the last sick bastard, Y/N. Did I ever apologize for being an ass?” Dean whispers.
“Nah, you are a partner from hell. This kind of guys never apologize with words but with actions. You saved me and gave me a home, a new partner and delicious pizza, Dean.”
“I knew you are only into my pizza. Sexy pizza destroyer…” Dean husks and you slap his hand away, glaring at your tall partner.
“Don’t get cocky Winchester!” Pointing toward his cock you shake your head. “Forget it. I’m not one of your flings, Detective.”
“One day you will fall for my charm. Hard and fast, Sweetheart.” Leaning closer Dean plants, a soft kiss to your hair. “Till then we can be friends, Y/N. How about some pie? I love me some pie.”
“Give me some pie, another beer and a pile of files and I might rethink the ‘no sex with my partner’ rule.” Chuckling you watch Dean rushing toward the kitchen to get more beer and his pie.
“I might let you see my cute naked ass in three or four years.” You yell making Dean stopping in his tracks, cursing.
“Not fair, smart pants…not fair…”
“Hmm…I like seeing you squirm partner. Now get me this pie and we can talk about more research.”
“You’re lucky I like you, partner,” Dean mutters.
“Still not a chance, Dean…”
“I wouldn’t bet on that…”

Merci de me faire me sentir à ma place.
Merci de m’avoir lu ! J’ai hâte de vous faire d’autres bilans de cette expérience, j’ai encore beaucoup à vous dire sur l’Institut Polis mais je pense avoir fait le tour de ce sujet ici. N’hésitez pas à me faire vos retours. Je vous dis à demain pour le dernier article du défi si tout se passe bien, d’ici-là portez-vous bien ! <3

Nmap Defcon Release! 80+ improvements include new NSE scripts/libs, new Npcap, etc.
Fellow hackers, I'm here in Las Vegas for Defcon and delighted to release Nmap 7.80.  It's the first formal Nmap release in more than a year, and I hope you find it worth the wait! The main reason for the delay is that we've been working so hard on our Npcap Windows packet capturing driver.  As many of you know, Windows Nmap traditionally depended on Winpcap for packet capture.  That is great software, but it has been discontinued and has seen no updates since 2013. It doesn't always work on Windows 10, and it depends on long-deprecated Windows API's that Microsoft could remove at any time.  So we've spent the last few years building our own Npcap raw packet capturing/sending driver, starting with Winpcap as the base.  It uses modern APIs and is more performant as well as more secure and more featureful.  We've had 15 Npcap releases since Nmap 7.70 and we're really happy with where it is now.  Even Wireshark switched to Npcap recently.  More details on Npcap can be found at https://npcap.org. But Windows users aren't the only ones benefiting from this new Nmap release.  It includes 80+ cross-platform improvements you can read about below, including 11 new NSE scripts, a bunch of new libraries, bug fixes and performance improvements. map 7.80 source code and binary packages for Linux, Windows, and Mac are available for free download from the usual spot: https://nmap.org/download.html If you find any bugs in this release, please let us know on the Nmap Dev list or bug tracker as described at https://nmap.org/book/man-bugs.html. Here is the full list of significant changes since 7.70: map 7.70 source code and binary packages for Linux, Windows, and Mac are available for free download from the usual spot: https://nmap.org/download.html If you find any bugs in this release, please let us know on the Nmap Dev list or bug tracker as described at https://nmap.org/book/man-bugs.html. Here is the full list of significant changes: o [Windows] The Npcap Windows packet capturing library (https://npcap.org/)  is faster and more stable than ever. Nmap 7.80 updates the bundled Npcap  from version 0.99-r2 to 0.9982, including all of these changes from the  last 15 Npcap releases: https://nmap.org/npcap/changelog o [NSE] Added 11 NSE scripts, from 8 authors, bringing the total up to 598!  They are all listed at https://nmap.org/nsedoc/, and the summaries are  below:  + [GH#1232] broadcast-hid-discoveryd discovers HID devices on a LAN by    sending a discoveryd network broadcast probe. [Brendan Coles]  + [GH#1236] broadcast-jenkins-discover discovers Jenkins servers on a LAN    by sending a discovery broadcast probe. [Brendan Coles]  + [GH#1016][GH#1082] http-hp-ilo-info extracts information from HP    Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) servers. [rajeevrmenon97]  + [GH#1243] http-sap-netweaver-leak detects SAP Netweaver Portal with the    Knowledge Management Unit enabled with anonymous access. [ArphanetX]  + https-redirect detects HTTP servers that redirect to the same port, but    with HTTPS. Some nginx servers do this, which made ssl-* scripts not run    properly. [Daniel Miller]  + [GH#1504] lu-enum enumerates Logical Units (LU) of TN3270E servers.    [Soldier of Fortran]  + [GH#1633] rdp-ntlm-info extracts Windows domain information from RDP    services. [Tom Sellers]  + smb-vuln-webexec checks whether the WebExService is installed and allows    code execution. [Ron Bowes]  + smb-webexec-exploit exploits the WebExService to run arbitrary commands    with SYSTEM privileges. [Ron Bowes]  + [GH#1457] ubiquiti-discovery extracts information from the Ubiquiti    Discovery service and assists version detection. [Tom Sellers]  + [GH#1126] vulners queries the Vulners CVE database API using CPE    information from Nmap's service and application version detection.    [GMedian, Daniel Miller] o [GH#1291][GH#34][GH#1339] Use pcap_create instead of pcap_live_open in  Nmap, and set immediate mode on the pcap descriptor. This solves packet  loss problems on Linux and may improve performance on other platforms.  [Daniel Cater, Mike Pontillo, Daniel Miller] o [NSE] Collected utility functions for string processing into a new  library, stringaux.lua. [Daniel Miller] o [NSE] New rand.lua library uses the best sources of random available on  the system to generate random strings. [Daniel Miller] o [NSE] New library, oops.lua, makes reporting errors easy, with plenty of  debugging detail when needed, and no clutter when not. [Daniel Miller] o [NSE] Collected utility functions for manipulating and searching tables  into a new library, tableaux.lua. [Daniel Miller] o [NSE] New knx.lua library holds common functions and definitions for  communicating with KNX/Konnex devices. [Daniel Miller] o [NSE][GH#1571] The HTTP library now provides transparent support for gzip-  encoded response body. (See https://github.com/nmap/nmap/pull/1571 for an  overview.) [nnposter] o [Nsock][Ncat][GH#1075] Add AF_VSOCK (Linux VM sockets) functionality to  Nsock and Ncat. VM sockets are used for communication between virtual  machines and the hypervisor. [Stefan Hajnoczi] o [Security][Windows] Address CVE-2019-1552 in OpenSSL by building with the  prefix "C:\Program Files (x86)\Nmap\OpenSSL". This should prevent  unauthorized users from modifying OpenSSL defaults by writing  configuration to this directory. o [Security][GH#1147][GH#1108] Reduced LibPCRE resource limits so that  version detection can't use as much of the stack. Previously Nmap could  crash when run on low-memory systems against target services which are  intentionally or accidentally difficult to match. Someone assigned  CVE-2018-15173 for this issue. [Daniel Miller] o [GH#1361] Deprecate and disable the -PR (ARP ping) host discovery  option. ARP ping is already used whenever possible, and the -PR option  would not force it to be used in any other case. [Daniel Miller] o [NSE] bin.lua is officially deprecated. Lua 5.3, added 2 years ago in Nmap  7.25BETA2, has native support for binary data packing via string.pack and  string.unpack. All existing scripts and libraries have been updated.  [Daniel Miller] o [NSE] Completely removed the bit.lua NSE library. All of its functions are  replaced by native Lua bitwise operations, except for `arshift`  (arithmetic shift) which has been moved to the bits.lua library. [Daniel  Miller] o [NSE][GH#1571] The HTTP library is now enforcing a size limit on the  received response body. The default limit can be adjusted with a script  argument, which applies to all scripts, and can be overridden case-by-case  with an HTTP request option. (See https://github.com/nmap/nmap/pull/1571  for details.)  [nnposter] o [NSE][GH#1648] CR characters are no longer treated as illegal in script  XML output. [nnposter] o [GH#1659] Allow resuming nmap scan with lengthy command line [Clément  Notin] o [NSE][GH#1614] Add TLS support to rdp-enum-encryption. Enables determining  protocol version against servers that require TLS and lays ground work for  some NLA/CredSSP information collection. [Tom Sellers] o [NSE][GH#1611] Address two protocol parsing issues in rdp-enum-encryption  and the RDP nse library which broke scanning of Windows XP. Clarify  protocol types [Tom Sellers] o [NSE][GH#1608] Script http-fileupload-exploiter failed to locate its  resource file unless executed from a specific working  directory. [nnposter] o [NSE][GH#1467] Avoid clobbering the "severity" and "ignore_404" values of  fingerprints in http-enum. None of the standard fingerprints uses these  fields. [Kostas Milonas] o [NSE][GH#1077] Fix a crash caused by a double-free of libssh2 session data  when running SSH NSE scripts against non-SSH services. [Seth Randall] o [NSE][GH#1565] Updates the execution rule of the mongodb scripts to be  able to run on alternate ports. [Paulino Calderon] o [Ncat][GH#1560] Allow Ncat to connect to servers on port 0, provided that  the socket implementation allows this. [Daniel Miller] o Update the included libpcap to 1.9.0. [Daniel Miller] o [NSE][GH#1544] Fix a logic error that resulted in scripts not honoring the  smbdomain script-arg when the target provided a domain in the NTLM  challenge.  [Daniel Miller] o [Nsock][GH#1543] Avoid a crash (Protocol not supported) caused by trying  to reconnect with SSLv2 when an error occurs during DTLS connect. [Daniel  Miller] o [NSE][GH#1534] Removed OSVDB references from scripts and replaced them  with BID references where possible. [nnposter] o [NSE][GH#1504] Updates TN3270.lua and adds argument to disable TN3270E  [Soldier of Fortran] o [GH#1504] RMI parser could crash when encountering invalid input [Clément  Notin] o [GH#863] Avoid reporting negative latencies due to matching an ARP or ND  response to a probe sent after it was recieved. [Daniel Miller] o [Ncat][GH#1441] To avoid confusion and to support non-default proxy ports,  option --proxy now requires a literal IPv6 address to be specified using  square-bracket notation, such as --proxy [2001:db8::123]:456. [nnposter] o [Ncat][GH#1214][GH#1230][GH#1439] New ncat option provides control over  whether proxy destinations are resolved by the remote proxy server or  locally, by Ncat itself. See option --proxy-dns. [nnposter] o [NSE][GH#1478] Updated script ftp-syst to prevent potential endless  looping.  [nnposter] o [GH#1454] New service probes and match lines for v1 and v2 of the Ubiquiti  Discovery protocol. Devices often leave the related service open and it  exposes significant amounts of information as well as the risk of being  used as part of a DDoS. New nmap-payload entry for v1 of the  protocol. [Tom Sellers] o [NSE] Removed hostmap-ip2hosts.nse as the API has been broken for a while  and the service was completely shutdown on Feb 17th, 2019. [Paulino  Calderon] o [NSE][GH#1318] Adds TN3270E support and additional improvements to  tn3270.lua and updates tn3270-screen.nse to display the new  setting. [mainframed] o [NSE][GH#1346] Updates product codes and adds a check for response length  in enip-info.nse. The script now uses string.unpack. [NothinRandom] o [Ncat][GH#1310][GH#1409] Temporary RSA keys are now 2048-bit to resolve a  compatibility issue with OpenSSL library configured with security level 2,  as seen on current Debian or Kali.  [Adrian Vollmer, nnposter] o [NSE][GH#1227] Fix a crash (double-free) when using SSH scripts against  non-SSH services. [Daniel Miller] o [Zenmap] Fix a crash when Nmap executable cannot be found and the system  PATH contains non-UTF-8 bytes, such as on Windows. [Daniel Miller] o [Zenmap] Fix a crash in results search when using the dir: operator:    AttributeError: 'SearchDB' object has no attribute 'match_dir' [Daniel    Miller] o [Ncat][GH#1372] Fixed an issue with Ncat -e on Windows that caused early  termination of connections. [Alberto Garcia Illera] o [NSE][GH#1359] Fix a false-positive in http-phpmyadmin-dir-traversal when  the server responds with 200 status to a POST request to any  URI. [Francesco Soncina] o [NSE] New vulnerability state in vulns.lua, UNKNOWN, is used to indicate  that testing could not rule out vulnerability. [Daniel Miller] o [GH#1355] When searching for Lua header files, actually use them where  they are found instead of forcing /usr/include. [Fabrice Fontaine, Daniel  Miller] o [NSE][GH#1331] Script traceroute-geolocation no longer crashes when  www.GeoPlugin.net returns null coordinates [Michal Kubenka, nnposter] o Limit verbose -v and debugging -d levels to a maximum of 10. Nmap does not  use higher levels internally. [Daniel Miller] o [NSE] tls.lua when creating a client_hello message will now only use a  SSLv3 record layer if the protocol version is SSLv3. Some TLS  implementations will not handshake with a client offering less than  TLSv1.0. Scripts will have to manually fall back to SSLv3 to talk to  SSLv3-only servers. [Daniel Miller] o [NSE][GH#1322] Fix a few false-positive conditions in  ssl-ccs-injection. TLS implementations that responded with fatal alerts  other than "unexpected message" had been falsely marked as  vulnerable. [Daniel Miller] o Emergency fix to Nmap's birthday announcement so Nmap wishes itself a  "Happy 21st Birthday" rather than "Happy 21th" in verbose mode (-v) on  September 1, 2018. [Daniel Miller] o [GH#1150] Start host timeout clocks when the first probe is sent to a  host, not when the hostgroup is started. Sometimes a host doesn't get  probes until late in the hostgroup, increasing the chance it will time  out. [jsiembida] o [NSE] Support for edns-client-subnet (ECS) in dns.lua has been improved by:  - [GH#1271] Using ECS code compliant with RFC 7871 [John Bond]  - Properly trimming ECS address, as mandated by RFC 7871 [nnposter]  - Fixing a bug that prevented using the same ECS option table more than    once [nnposter] o [Ncat][GH#1267] Fixed communication with commands launched with -e or -c  on Windows, especially when --ssl is used. [Daniel Miller] o [NSE] Script http-default-accounts can now select more than one  fingerprint category. It now also possible to select fingerprints by name  to support very specific scanning. [nnposter] o [NSE] Script http-default-accounts was not able to run against more than  one target host/port. [nnposter] o [NSE][GH#1251] New script-arg `http.host` allows users to force a  particular value for the Host header in all HTTP requests. o [NSE][GH#1258] Use smtp.domain script arg or target's domain name instead  of "example.com" in EHLO command used for STARTTLS. [gwire] o [NSE][GH#1233] Fix brute.lua's BruteSocket wrapper, which was crashing  Nmap with an assertion failure due to socket mixup [Daniel Miller]: nmap:  nse_nsock.cc:672: int receive_buf(lua_State*, int, lua_KContext):  Assertion `lua_gettop(L) == 7' failed. o [NSE][GH#1254] Handle an error condition in smb-vuln-ms17-010 caused by  IPS closing the connection. [Clément Notin] o [Ncat][GH#1237] Fixed literal IPv6 URL format for connecting through HTTP  proxies. [Phil Dibowitz] o [NSE][GH#1212] Updates vendors from ODVA list for enip-info. [NothinRandom] o [NSE][GH#1191] Add two common error strings that improve MySQL detection  by the script http-sql-injection. [Robert Taylor, Paulino Calderon] o [NSE][GH#1220] Fix bug in http-vuln-cve2006-3392 that prevented the script  to generate the vulnerability report correctly. [rewardone] o [NSE][GH#1218] Fix bug related to screen rendering in NSE library  tn3270. This patch also improves the brute force script  tso-brute. [mainframed] o [NSE][GH#1209] Fix SIP, SASL, and HTTP Digest authentication when the  algorithm contains lowercase characters. [Jeswin Mathai] o [GH#1204] Nmap could be fooled into ignoring TCP response packets if they  used an unknown TCP Option, which would misalign the validation, causing  it to fail. [Clément Notin, Daniel Miller] o [NSE]The HTTP response parser now tolerates status lines without a reason  phrase, which improves compatibility with some HTTP servers. [nnposter] o [NSE][GH#1169][GH#1170][GH#1171]][GH#1198] Parser for HTTP Set-Cookie header  is now more compliant with RFC 6265:  - empty attributes are tolerated  - double quotes in cookie and/or attribute values are treated literally  - attributes with empty values and value-less attributes are parsed equally  - attributes named "name" or "value" are ignored  [nnposter] o [NSE][GH#1158] Fix parsing http-grep.match script-arg. [Hans van den  Bogert] o [Zenmap][GH#1177] Avoid a crash when recent_scans.txt cannot be written  to.  [Daniel Miller] o Fixed --resume when the path to Nmap contains spaces. Reported on Windows  by Adriel Desautels. FOSTER THE PEOPLE - PICK U UP
[4.83]
More like Foster the Poople, right?
Kayla Beardslee: I don't know much about Foster the People, so I have no barometer for whether this is a familiar or strange addition to their discography, but what I do know is that "Pick U Up" is fun and funky pop music in its purest form. I shouldn't have been surprised to find out that savvy pop songwriter Sarah Aarons ("The Middle," "GIRL") and producer Joel Little (Lorde, Taylor Swift, Broods) worked on it. Forgive me for sounding like I'm setting up a thesis statement, but it's interesting to compare "Pick U Up" with "Beautiful People" by Ed Sheeran as a way to examine the trope of writing about the negative side of fame. Both songs bemoan the fakeness of fame and LA, but neither really offer examples of what the singers want to do instead of clawing their way up the social ladder. Sheeran falls flat by devoting his chorus to the nebulous, cliche concept of "famous people," but Foster the People sidestep this shortcoming by focusing on the specifics of the narrator's relationship. Celebrities singing about how fame kinda sucks is a dangerous tightrope to walk, but FTP only use the Hollywood setting to contextualize the narrator's doubts about his partner's interest ("Do you love me? / Or you just trying me on?"). Either ironically or appropriately, the superficial sheen of Los Angeles becomes just glitzy window dressing for familiar questions about the strength of a relationship. [8]
Alfred Soto: I won't dispel the notion that FTP have discovered a clutch of 2009 The-Dream singles but added Xmas ornaments like "cocktail of charm." [1]
Kylo Nocom: Nerdy white boy funk a la Vulfpeck, but Vulfpeck are too busy trying to impress theory nerds to ever bother offering a simple pleasure as delectable as this. [7]
Joshua Lu: Funk fits Foster The People, whose indiepop styles have always sounded better when leaning into the poppier side. But "Pick U Up" runs out of ways to funk at times, made apparent in those bits of white space in the chorus where, devoid of lyrics, you realize how lifeless the churning instrumental really sounds. [6]
Will Adams: Foster the People collaborate with The Knocks for a single (and pretty good!) song one time and all of a sudden they want to turn into Chromeo. You hate to see it. [4]
Ian Mathers: Did... did Foster the People think "Pumped Up Kicks" was popular because of the lyrics? [3]

Original Post from FireEye Author: J. Gomez
Ok, I admit this blog post is not about our childhood TV friend, Gumby… Instead it’s about a much more sinister character, Gumblar & its malware henchmen…
Originally making its debut back in March/April of this year (see here and here) and then suddenly it went quiet for a few months, until recently… Yes, Gumblar is back with a vengeance & still causing problems for it’s unsuspecting victims.
The primary delivery mechanism is still via Drive-By-Download (notably compromised sites serving malicious Adobe PDF’s) which when successful will load the malware onto your system.
We have taken a look at a couple of the Gumblar associated malware samples, you can see some VirusTotal results here & here.
Here is a quick peek at what this bad-guy is doing… Once loaded on to the victim’s system, it silently executes with out any obvious indications to the end-user. (no Fake AV pop-ups, instant reboots, tray icons or ransom notes here.)
The UPX packed executable will proceed to write out a file (disguised as an innocent temp or backup file) 1 subdirectory beneath it’s current location. The dropped file, actually a .dll (18432 bytes in size), uses (3-6 character) randomly generated filename with the extension “.tmp”, “.bak”, “.dat” or “.old”.
filename extensions visible when looking at the binary in a hex editor.
It goes on to delete a couple audio drivers from the “c:windowssystem32” directory (sysaudio.sys & wdmaud.sys). Along with deleting these, it adds the following registry key:
“HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows NT/Current Version/Drivers32/midi9”
The above registry key value “midi9” actually equates to executing “ 0yAAAAAAAA” when loaded. The system will now use the evil .dll file anytime the browser is loaded.
(Note the .bak file followed by the “0yAAAAAAAA” string, it’s always there).
The malware will also generate an ID string (32 characters long) that gets sent to the C&C.
Sample screen shots of the malware’s string generation routine.
The malware will also attempt to rename itself with no filename (null) upon reboot, using the MOVEFILE_DELAY_UNTIL_REBOOT function & a flag of 0x4.
A quick peek at the registry shows it created an entry under
HLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerPendingFileRenameOperations
Normally ok except in the value data there is only 1 entry when there should be a pair (the current file name & what to rename it to upon reboot).
Once the infection process completes, it quietly waits for you to access a website site using your browser. Here is where this guy really starts to go to work, stealing FTP credentials and potentially skewing search results. Anything your browser sees, IT sees…
A quick look at a running packet capture and we see that along with the normal HTTP traffic it has taken the opportunity to communicate with the C&C. It has sent the 32 character string (prefixed with “?0E2” & followed by a “0” at the end) in the URI to the C&C & received back a response as displayed here:
Notice the “SS: ” & “Xost: ” fields in the HTTP Header. The “SS:” field contains the URI you were accessing & the “Xost:” field holds the original destination host/site. Also of note is the response from the server. The “//fHqq0EDFBNEED” is always present followed by the 32 byte string that was sent to the C&C, and then 2 additional bytes (the “2y” at the end). (If you see this type of traffic on your network, it’s time to be a little concerned…)
The malware attempts to contact one of 3 IP’s
1.) 67.215.246.34 – still alive & well.
OrgName: Secured Private Network  OrgID: SPNW Address: 1740 East Garry Ave. Address: Suite 234 City: Santa Ana StateProv: CA PostalCode: 92705 Country: US NetRange: 67.215.224.0 – 67.215.255.255 CIDR: 67.215.224.0/19 OriginAS: AS22298 NetName: SPN3W NetHandle: NET-67-215-224-0-1 Parent: NET-67-0-0-0-0 NetType: Direct Allocation NameServer: NS1.SECUREDPRIVATENETWORK.NET NameServer: NS2.SECUREDPRIVATENETWORK.NET Comment: RegDate: 2007-10-18 Updated: 2008-10-08
2.) 67.212.81.67  – known Crimeware friendly ISP as mentioned here.
OrgName: Netelligent Hosting Services Inc. OrgID: NHS-31 Address: 1396 Franklin Drive City: Laval StateProv: QC PostalCode: H7W-1K6 Country: CA NetRange: 67.212.64.0 – 67.212.95.255 CIDR: 67.212.64.0/19 NetName: NETEL-ARIN-BLK02 NetHandle: NET-67-212-64-0-1 Parent: NET-67-0-0-0-0 NetType: Direct Allocation NameServer: NS1.NETELLIGENT.CA NameServer: NS2.NETELLIGENT.CA NameServer: NS3.NETELLIGENT.CA Comment: RegDate: 2007-08-30 Updated: 2008-06-20
3.) 195.24.76.250 – which appears to host 9 other sites, including some leading to pages serving FakeAV.
inetnum: 195.24.72.0 – 195.24.79.255 netname: ROOT-195-24-72-0-21 descr: root eSolutions country: LU admin-c: AB99-RIPE tech-c: RE655-RIPE status: ASSIGNED PI mnt-by: ROOT-MNT mnt-by: RIPE-NCC-HM-PI-MNT mnt-lower: RIPE-NCC-HM-PI-MNT source: RIPE # Filtered
So while unsuspecting victims go about there usual web activity, the malware will quietly send data to any one of these 3 IP’s (in the above order).
Without careful inspection, this communication can easily snake by perimeter defenses & security software.
More to come…
A special thanks to my colleagues Atif Mushtaq & Julia Wolf.
