If the spnepisodebracket craze has shown us anything, it's that the supernatural fanbase is extremely divided, with the lowly sam stan seemingly at the bottom of the pile. sam is always last in polls, so this is a bracket for the 10% or so who always votes for him. because yeah, there's 327 episodes of Supernatural, but how many are popular because of a dean or destiel moment? how many good episodes are drowned out because they focus on sam?

i've chosen, with some crowdsourced peer review (special thanks to @spneveryseason, @suncaptor, and @ambersock!) 125 episodes that are Sam Relevant. Some are extremely sam-centric, some just have a shot where sam looks like he's being crucified that gives me brain worms -- i tried to be generous about it to keep a relatively even seasons distribution! matchups will be random and polls will last 24 hours each. in the tradition of @spnepisodebracket (who this is obviously inspired by and would not be possible without!) i'll try to rb a gifset for every episode in the poll!

a final note: no this is not that serious but the criteria for voting here should be how good the episode is as a SAM episode, not as anything else, so please vote accordingly! i am making this for people who actually enjoy sam and if that is not you, then this is not the poll for you!

If the "Don't, please" scene in 1x04 was the moment I fell in love with the idea of them as a couple, this was the moment that made me realize that both of them actually were just as far gone as I was at that point.

Look at them all smiles and heart on their sleeves. She came back because she knew he was hurting and after initially making a joke about her being there for sex, he realizes that she really cares about him, about how he feels right now. And nobody has cared about his feelings for a long time, maybe ever.

Also, I'm just a sucker for their piano scenes. Sorry, not sorry.

personally tho, my fav scenes were when Lucifer and father frank were playing the piano and the end of the episode in which he was playing alone but Chloe sat alongside him 😍😭 the whole Episode was very good tbh

Yeah! It was such an emotional and beautiful scene! Lucifer connecting with a stranger on a deeper level and becoming friends with someone who thought was so different from him, genuinely enjoying his company and making a friend. The whole ep was about loneliness and having friends and how Chloe was a good friend to Lucifer, how she stayed with him when he needed her most❤️

Do you have any gifs of these tropes?

One of my FAVORITE caretaker tropes is when the caretaker steps in front of whumpee to protect them. Not face to face but like if the whumper is in front of both of them, so the caretaker moves in front of whumpee to get them out of view of whumper, take the first hit, etc.

Or even if it’s not fully in front of whumpee. Like if someone threatened whumpee so caretaker takes a step forward, not in front of whumpee to shield them, but in a ‘say that again’ way. As a threat towards whumper.

Or when caretaker puts their arm out. To push whumpee behind them or to stop them from going towards whumper. ITS SO GOOD!!!

Especially if the caretaker is an older brother protecting their little brother. 😌😩

That is one of my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE TROPES!!!! EVER!!!!! I love when it happens especially in fanfiction and I die every time. I do have a few gif examples for you too! Please enjoy the following:

Top 10 moments:

“Dad, I need a favor” Lucifer bargains with God for Chloe’s protection after being shot.

“Don't please” Lucifer becomes aware of being emotionally unguarded when Chloe first visits his loft and examines his scars.

School’s out - Lucifer meets Dan and Trixie: “I kicked her in the no-touch square / well played” “I don't know whether to laugh or shoot you / surprise me.” This whole scene is the best part of the pilot episode because in so few words it sets up the trajectory of EVERY central relationship in s1, from the moment Lucifer refuses to stay in the car and trails into the school after a good looking teacher, to Trix scolding Lucifer, to Lucifer stoking Trixie’s curiosity about hookers and confronting Dan in Chloe’s defense, to Chloe saying, “I think Trixie likes you.”

“How do you know it’s finished?” Father Frank’s balcony scene with Lucifer regarding his dad’s plan, their piano riff duo, and his subsequent death, which I’ll talk about below.

“I have never lied to you, and I will never lie to you” The inaugural Deckerstar stakeout

“It’s too hot in this five-star hellhole”: Hungover Chloe hogs Lucifer's bed.

“Don't shoot him, he's unarmed:” Chloe tries to protect Lucifer at his most self-destructive during the confrontation in the LUX penthouse when he’s about to be arrested as a suspect for murder.

Linda, Lucifer, and Amenadiel’s confrontation in her office where she discovers that they’re brothers and rips them both for lying to her as they sit on her couch for they’re first unofficial family therapy session.

“Maybe being vulnerable it a good thing / no, it means you’re at someone else’s mercy” Linda and Lucifer talk about Chloe and she asks “Maybe you should stay away from everyone...stay away from Chloe” and Lucifer realizes that he doesn’t want to.

Linda assists Chloe and Lucifer with a case at Lucifer’s behest to “fix her”, but she wins Chloe over instead and essentially back her side of the argument

Honorable Mentions

Lucifer wakes Trixie by throwing a toy at her in order to find out more about Chloe, and she extorts him for cash.

“Wobbly head gets it”: Amenadiel and Lucifer go on a detective quest to find Malcolm and question Dan

“I am here for you...I thought you could use a friend”: Chloe and Lucifer’s piano duet.

“I never expected your brother to be so handsome / are you sure you don’t want to go after her - I could ask Father for rain, make it a moment”: Chloe meets Amenadiel at the artifact auction. It is so frickin charming.

“What about your mortality situation? / well it’s kind of a non-sitch...let’s enjoy the moment” Lucifer and Amenadiel team up to fight together in the finale, giving me a little Kim Possible vibe.

Lucifer prays to Amenadiel to slow time and stop a bullet

“Snitches end up in ditches:” Lucifer punches Palmetto at the Paddock bar

“Come on, I’ll drive you home...wuss.” Chloe offers Lucifer a hand...after she shoots him.

The fight scenes, all the fight scenes. Maze, Lucifer, Amenadiel, Chloe, all of them.

Best Guests:

Colman Domingo as Father Frank in “A Priest Walks into a Bar” 1x09. I reeeeeeallly adore him. We need to see him again in the series. Come on season 5. Please be the lucky one. 

Runner up: Manny Montana as Junior in “Pops” 1x10 

Funniest Moment:

Chloe’s post-breakup “detective Douche” hangover: When she wakes up in Lucifer’s bed without knowing how she got there or where her clothes are and he offers both coffee and hair of the dog. It’s magnificent, particularly his imitation of her.

Runner up: Maze knocks Dan out and takes his clothes, forcing him into Juicy pink PJs. Thank goodness for the immensely talented Kevin Alejandro.

Most Memorable Dramatic moment:

Father Frank's death in Lucifer’s arms: if you don’t get choked up when Lucifer goes into a grief-stricken vengeful rage, your a better person than me. I did not last.

Runner up: “Dad, I need a favor.” Oh my goodness, five words and Tom Ellis can make an episode. It’s really strange, all season he was Lucifer the Devil, dealer of favors and diviner of desires. In an instant, he became Lucifer the son. It was so childlike when his voice broke, and the subtext was loud and clear: “dad, I f****** up.” Even when he couldn’t bring himself to say it, it broke me. The father-son dynamic has never been that powerful since. 

Best Fight scene:

“Why don’t we skip the time-slowing shenanigans?” Lucifer and Amenadiel tag-team against the gang with guns in search of Malcolm, as mentioned above.

Runner up: “Why don’t you pick on someone your own size” Lucifer vs Amenadiel in the penthouse loft, Amenadiel goes sailing over the bar.

Favorite Trixie moment: 

“You shot someone...again? / “If you shot Lucifer, you must really like him.”

Runner up: every time Trixie runs to hug Lucifer, but particularly the time he says “ah, get back.”

Honorable mention: every other Trixie / Trixstar interaction. Beatrice is gets second billing behind Lucifer as the best angel of the season.

Round 1 polls have all ended! Winners and the percentage by which they won are below the cut. Any episode that won by less than 20% is bolded.

A few notes on the winners:

Only 17 out of 48 winners are from the post-Kripke era.

No episodes from seasons 10 or 15 made it into Round 2.

While the majority of polls were sweeps, the closest race by far was Pac-Man Fever v. Into the Mystic, with PMF coming out on top by 0.6% in the end.

Most polls had around 200-250 votes, with a few outliers in the more controversial polls. Group 24 (3x03 v 3x08 v 6x13) had 446 votes, Group 4 (3x11 v 13x19 v 1x10) had 454 votes, and Group 9 (2x17 v 7x17 v 4x13) had 497 votes.

Only 2 of the 10 episodes from season 5 didn't make it, with one of them losing out to another s5 episode (Swap Meat to Changing Channels). This makes season 5 the most represented season going into Round 2.
