In his last moments
Do you think snow regretted leaving her?
Do you think he saw her smirk in Katniss' lips
And her voice in the trees
Calling for him to join her
Wear a necklace of rope
Side by side

Part 2
Growing up in the Covey had been a stroke of luck, simple as it gets, when Lucy Gray Baird and her family had been forced into District 12 Seeing the talent you had with a guitar one night as you played to the darkness, they took you to their next show where you played alongside Lucy Gray. She was still the star, she had the smile, the voice, the charisma. You could sing when you needed to, and you played the guitar just as well, but she always took the spotlight. And when she strolled into town after winning the Hunger Games, that star power only grew. She was the star, until one sunny morning.
Mockingjay's sang into the wind, the warm sun beating against your skin and the gentle breeze made your sundress flow in the wind. Meeting Lucy and the others on the walk to the lake you came face to face with Coriolanus Snow. Buzzed blonde hair, sharp jawline and the bluest eyes you had ever seen. His smile was bright, and his laugh was as sweet as Lucy’s singing. And it should be, he was laughing at her jokes. Smiling at her. Before he could catch you staring your eyes had shifted quickly, focussing on Lucy as you walked to her side.
She beamed as she saw you, wrapping her arms tightly around you.
“Coriolanus, I want you to meet only the bestest person in the world,” Lucy went on, kissing you quickly on the cheek.
The same smile returned as he turned to shake your hand, his skin soft on your calloused palms. “It’s nice to finally meet you.” He spoke your name softly, the syllables dripping from his tongue like honey. Your hand slipped from his, the tips of his fingers running along your palm.
Lucy quickly ushered you and the rest of the group on, starting the long hike down the green hills. Lucy walked ahead with Aurora, talking wistfully into the wind. You walked in silence, one hand gripping the strap of your satchel as you watched the critters race up the branches of the trees.
“Lucy said you played the guitar,” Coriolanus spoke up, swatting away another mosquito. He walked beside you, his tall figure blocking the sun from your face. He looked down at you, his eyebrows furrowing slightly. “Why didn’t I see you performing last night?”
You simply shrugged. The answer was the crowds didn’t cheer for you, Lucy was the star, and she could play for hours without backup. But it sounded sad. You looked over the trees, the Mockingjay's flying higher into the trees. “Nothing special, you probably just missed me when I left.”
Coriolanus shook his head softly, “I feel like I’d remember you.” You couldn’t place what Coriolanus meant, your eyebrows furrowing as you thought over his words. You didn't say anything more after that, keeping your eyes ahead on the track leading to the lake.
As soon as the dock was close enough Aurora and Tip had stripped their clothes off and thrown themselves in the water. You tossed your bag down, the hot sun that had beat against your skin had made you more than happy to rush into the water. Tossing your sundress aside with your satchel you ran down the dock and dove under the crystal blue water. The cool lake chilled your skin enough to relieve the sun but not enough to raise goosebumps.
You swam up to the surface, pushed the hair back for your face and fixed the straps of your handmade bra that slid down your shoulder. Lucy jumped in after you, and with a yell, Coriolanus jumped in, the splash of water hitting your face. You laughed, using your arms to keep you afloat. Coriolanus muttered an apology through a smile, but you barely noticed as your eyes fell over his light skin, his collar bones and muscular shoulders.
The lake was sweet, a nice relief from the constant smell of coal and sweat, the rowdy crowds and the smell of liquor on everyone's breath. Some time later Lucy had swam to shore, helping Aaroa and Tip fish and dig up Katniss' roots.
You floated on your back, the gentle waves lapping at your skin as the sun warmed your face. Coriolanus sat on the edge of the dock, toying with his fingers as he watched you. The wind blew the waves softly, the sun reflecting on your skin like liquid gold. He pushed himself off the dock, slipping below the cold water once again. “Can I hear you sing?” His voice made you turn your head to look at him.
“I don’t sing,” You muttered, turning your head to face the sun again.
“Lucy said you sing.”
You turned to swim properly, treading water. “If you wanna hear someone sing you should ask Lucy,” You insisted. You pushed yourself closer, slipping your fingers under the slim metal chain of his dog tags, untangling the knot. You moved it to hang properly from his neck, your nails dragging ever so slightly across his soft skin.
His icy blue eye moved from your hand on his skin and looked up at your face, droplets of water falling from your hair, and slipping down your skin and when they hit your lips, you swiped them away with your tongue. “I wanna hear you sing.” His eyes snapped up to meet yours as you lifted her gaze from the metal chain.
You chuckled softly and he swore it sounded like the sweetest melody, a honeydew sound that he couldn't help but smile at. “You’re funny Coriolanus Snow,” you said softly. “Turning down the winner of the Hunger Games. A true victor.”
Coriolanus wiped a hand down his face, wiping away the water running over his eyes. “What about you?” He asked.
You shook your head softly. “She’s the star, the songbird,” You insisted, unsure you were convincing him or yourself. His smile made your stomach flip, his gaze made your cheeks burn, but his words… his honey words.
His hand slowly reached out, his fingers slipping beneath the strap of your bra and sliding it back up your shoulder. His hand lingered there for a moment before falling back into the water. “Luckily I like roses.”

Rip to "Poor Sejanus. Poor sensitive, foolish, dead Sejanus." "Can you imagine naming your child Reaper and them ending up in the reaping?" "Poor Lucy Gray. Poor ghost girl singing away with her birds." and "Well, you know what they say. The show’s not over until the mockingjay sings." We deserved you in the movie....

Parts of the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes movie that did the book dirty
Spoilers!!
• Snow is the one to suggest feeding the tributes, not stumbling across Sejanus already doing it
• The downgrade of the whole rat problem/rat poison thing
• Grandma’am is nice now???
• The almost total removal of Clemensia’s character, her being a weird suck up instead of her making a normal teen lie, and the fallout showing the absolute apathy Dr Gaul has (and also making Snow realize he can’t even trust the Capitol)
• Dr Gaul literally spelling out what the snakes do and Clemensia still sticking her hand in that stupid snake tank
• Not having Snow calling Lucy Gray “mine” in a creepy way even once to show how he feels he has ownership of her from the very beginning
• The EXTREME downgrade of Snow and Sejanus’ relationship, and the weird bond he has with the Plinths in general
• Ma Plinth erasure
• Tigris erasure
• Getting rid of Arachne’s funeral
• Snow not going out of his way to get Lucy Gray a guitar
• Having a blink and you’ll miss it throwaway line of the tributes and Academy students that died in the explosion
• Not showing the other tributes that did the interview
• Not showing Mama Snow’s compact until Coriolanus deciding to give it to Lucy Gray
• Lucy Gray and Snow didn’t kiss before she went into the games??? I feel like that added and extra layer of her wanting to survive but idk
• The erasure of the iconic “it’s not over until the mockingjay sings” line
• The drones never being fixed was a super weird choice and I’m not sure if I liked it or not
• Snow being super suspicious and running out to put something with Lucy Gray’s scent in the snake tank instead of just getting lucky and putting it in there on the off chance instead of it being predetermined
• The Games ending with the snake scene instead of Lucy Gray having to be clever to outwit her opponents, like I get it’s dramatic but that scene with Dr Gaul was just so weird to me
• Highbottom TELLING Snow to sign up for the Peacekeepers instead of just implying it and also telling him to keep his identity anonymous instead of Snow doing it out of pride
• Sejanus not telling Snow about the diploma he literally bargained for for him
• Sejanus showing up on the train instead of after Snow gets to District 12 and has to wallow in what his life is now before having finally having someone that actually knows him
• Snow not having IMMEDIATE beef with the mockingjays
• Snow not calling Sejanus his brother until the moment he betrayed him
• Them playing the Jabberjay audio at the hanging instead of Snow having to sit with his guilt and finding out via the commander was so so SO cringy omg
• Snow finding out he was going to District 2 BEFORE finding out about the hunt for the guns and who killed the mayor’s daughter was so so weird like why did they choose to do it in that order I feel like it took away all suspense of wondering when the other shoe was going to drop
• Lucy Gray looking that man in the eye and calling herself a loose end while he has a gun in his hand and not getting shot then and there was the most unrealistic part of the movie istg
• Not showing the Plinths in the apartment with them at all and just kinda having a throwaway line about where the money’s coming from
• Dr Gaul never says that she destroyed all evidence of the 10th game because of everything that happened with Snow, Lucy Gray, Sejanus, and the other dead Capitol children
• Snow not throwing away the morphine and Highbottom digging to get it, and instead just leaving it on the desk, idk it takes away the agency of the murder to me, less like an accident and less thought out (and on top of that, not showing how meticulous he was with poisoning the morphine so it couldn’t be traced back to him)

when the mockingjay sings
Tumblr media Tumblr media
guess who’s back after two months 🤭 i’m so sorry y’all omfg 😭 Anyway, hope y’all have seen tbosas (if you haven’t, IT IS SO GOOD, please watch it.) take some of my current gf <33
pairing: lucy gray baird x fem!reader
summary: your girlfriend comes back as the victor of the 10th hunger games, but doesn’t stay for long
warnings: established relationship, angst, hurt/comfort, cursing, going off the movie since I haven’t read the book yet
word count: 1,259, should take about ten minutes to read (longest to date!!)
listen to: stubborn love by the lumineers
Tumblr media
IT WAS EASY falling in love with lucy gray baird. her charming voice, her sweet smile, her beautiful, beautiful, face, her personality, really all of it made you fall face first for her.
her lust shone over you so easily. she could ask you to jump off a cliff, and you would happily do it just to make her proud. that’s all you ever wanted from her. proudness. acceptance.
so it was really no surprise for lucy gray or the covey when you tried to volunteer for her at the reaping.
you remember the firm hand on your forearm, the one that belonged to your girlfriend after you just pleaded to go in place of her. “don’t.” you gave her a look of anger, eyebrows knitted.
“‘don’t?’ you expect me to let you die out there?” you could see tears welling up in her eyes, threatening to spill out.
and it killed you. this wasn’t the bold lucy gray you knew. the one who would scare you from behind while you were making breakfast. the one who always kissed you in front of your family.
no, this was a different lucy gray. her voice began to shake. “i’m sorry.” and with that, she was gone, the gentle touch that was once on your arm a near punishment for being in love with someone so intricate.
the next few days were hell for you. You couldn’t eat, go out to your family, anything. all you could do was sleep. and you didn’t dare turn on your tv and watch the games.
so to get news that your girlfriend was not only the victor, but also well was overjoying to you.
the day lucy gray came back was the happiest of your life. the first second she saw you, she immediately sprinted, jumping up into your arms.
you giggled, running your hands through her hair. “i knew you could do it,” you whispered, tears of joy starting to form.
“ya, and i knew you couldn’t,” she whispered back, laughing at her own words. you couldn’t help but laugh, too.
everything returned relatively back to normal; you’d come to her shows, you two would hang out every day and walk in the woods, and you’d sit with the covey.
until one day.
you sat at the hob, waiting for your girlfriend to perform as usual. she had just gone off stage for a brief moment. it was taking longer than usual, though, and you started to grow concerned.
after a while, lucy gray and her band returned back on stage, but something seemed off about the singer.
you knew your girlfriend well, and you knew that this wasn’t the normal her. she appeared to be fine on the surface, singing her songs with a smile on her face, but you knew better.
so, when the performance ended, you immediately ran to catch up with lucy gray. she was two steps ahead of you, immediately sprinting to your seat.
she quickly rested her hands on your face. &ldquoi love you and i’m sorry.” she pecked your lips and just like that, she was gone, running out of the hob. no time for you to ask what she meant.
days had passed, and to your fear, you hadn’t heard from your girlfriend. no sign of her around town.
you went to the Covey, asking them if they’d seen her. nobody had seen lucy gray since the day at the hob. and allegedly, two people had shown up dead at the hob the same night your girlfriend ran off.
great.
you knew fate was going to catch up to you eventually after your girlfriend survived the games. so you accepted you’d never hear from her again.
you hid in your room, only coming out to use the bathroom or eat. you cried endlessly those few days.
lucy gray baird was your everything, and she was gone. of course she fucking was.
Tumblr media
11:30 AM IS when you woke the next day. truly, you woke up at a much earlier time, but you didn’t get up until the cons of staying in bed outweighed the pros.
you slugged into the kitchen, going to fix yourself a cup of coffee. your family was already out at work or school, so you were all alone. nothing to disturb you.
until you heard a knock on the door. nobody ever knocked.
you walked to the door, not knowing who was there or why they were. you slowly opened the door just an inch, just to take a peak at who was there.
you couldn’t believe your eyes. you thought you must be hallucinating from all the sleep, or maybe still dreaming. maybe you never got out of bed at all. “lucy gray?”
you quickly pulled her into your house, making sure to lock the door right after. before either of you could get anything out, you wrapped her in a tight hug.
it was a longing one. you thought lucy gray was dead, and she thought you’d never get the opportunity to see her again. the hug seemed to last ages, only being broken to litter each other’s faces in kisses.
“where the fuck have you been, lucy gray?” you asked, inviting her to sit down on the couch next to you.
“hiding. it’s a long story.” she took a seat next to you, leaning her head on your shoulder.
“did you kill mayfair?” you asked, genuine concern in your eyes. “i’m not mad if you did-”
“no, no, i didn’t,” she interrupted, reassuring you. “i was just too closely related to the situation. and then…other things happened, so i can’t stay for long.” your face turned into one of confusion.
“what happened?”
“i just said it was a long story.” she laughed, prompting you to laugh after her. that laugh sent you spiraling.
“well, at least tell me where you’re hiding.”
“up in the woods. gonna head up north here soon. i just came to visit to let you know i’m still here.”
“let me come with you. please.” you were pleading. you didn’t know how much longer you could live without your girlfriend. having to deal with the past few days for the rest of your life would end you.
“it’s not safe, (name)-”
“then why’d you even come? just to taunt me?” you fought back.
“no. i’m just saying you can’t come.”
“you have to let me. please. these past few days have been hell without you, lucy gray. i can’t have you stripped away from me a second time. i didn’t know much you meant to me until you got reaped, and right after you came back you left again. if you don’t let me go with you i might actually die.”
her face softened during your confession. she’d never had much reassurance in her life. nobody to ever really kiss the tears away. you were different. you were special.
she slowly realized how you were her everything, too. your hearts were both chipping, but they both fit perfectly together.
she sighed. “okay. pack your things.”
your eyes lit up, immediately jumping up from the couch to grab your stuff.
you knew your parents wouldn’t care about this eventually. there’d be the initial shock, but after time, nobody would care. you were always seen as nothing but another mouth to feed.
your bag full, you walked out of your room for the last time. lucy gray called for you from the doorway. “you sure?”
as you gazed at your house for the final time, you nodded, joining her in the doorway. “positive.”

In Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Lucy Gray Baird mentions the existence of a the mockingjay in a phrase.
"It ain't over until the Mockingjay sings."
And while it's dismissed as a weird phrase at first and gains its own meaning in the novel I think what's amazing is that, 64 years later, Katniss Everdeen sings The Meadow Song to a dying Rue in the 74th Games.
That moment also shows her first display of public defiance, and it informs her actions moving forward. She comes back to Rue's death as the turning point from survival to pushing for rebellion. After this point, she calls Thresh's death a "murder" and reacts suddenly to it. Even trying to reason that "Rue was different, Rue was my ally." She's begun to see humanity in her competitors and deconstructing everything the Capitol had fed her. In the end, she kills Cato out of mercy, and this is the boy who'd been hunting her down since the Games began. This is the arrogant lapdog from District 2 where everyone loves the Capitol.
But it all started with Rue dying and Katniss singing.
The Mockingjay had sung. The Capitol's show is over.

I just KNOW Lucy Gray Baird saying "The show's not over until the mockingjay sings" played inside Snow's head as Katniss singing 'hanging tree' played on his television.

Somebody please write a fanfic where Lucy Gray is volunteering for Katniss at the 75th hunger games!
She has survived and eventually ended up in 13. But when she had heard the rules of the 3rd quarter quell, she decided to come back and save Katniss. Lucy Gray would be as old as Mags at this moment.
And Snow, hello Snow !
I just can see, Effie and everyone is being so confused at the square, and Lucy Gray is saying.
- My name is Lucy Gray Baird, I’m a victor of the 10th Hunger Games, check your records. And I’m volunteering for this young girl. Trust me, darling (to Effie) Mr. President will be happy to see me again, he knows the show is not over until the mockingjay sings.

my favorite ‘the ballad of songbirds and snakes’ quotes (book specifically, so might be different than the movie)
“You’re mine and I’m yours. It’s written in the stars.” - Lucy Gray Baird
“Well, you know what they say. The show’s not over until the mockingjay sings.” - Lucy Gray Baird
”I’ve no use for liars. What are lies but attempts to conceal some sort of weakness?”
“What happens in there, fueled with the terror of becoming prey, see how quickly we become predator? See how quickly civilization disappears?” - Dr. Gaul
“I think there’s a natural goodness built into human beings. You know when you’ve stepped across that line into evil, and it’s your life’s challenge to stay on the right side of that line.” - Lucy Gray Baird

I know it's because of the movie but I'm always a little annoyed when people says it's Katniss singing the hanging tree that reminds Snow of Lucy Gray. We are not even sure he even heard her sing that, ever.
The song that would make him remember Lucy Gray is deep in the meadow and it's important because it's when the Mockingjay actually start singing (you know:" the show is not over until the Mockingjay sings" thing) and also, the second song that is not sung but is mentioned that would immediately throw him back to Lucy Gray is the valley song which was brought up by Peeta as the beginning of the crush he had on Katniss because it's an important song for the beginning of his relationship with Lucy Gray.
