Vanitas No Carte observation i made recently ‼️

ever since i watched vnc i’ve been so interested in the hour glass shots. obviously vanitas’ earring, there’s one when noe is writing in the future, the outro

i figured it was just to represent them running out of time but i just found out something cool

a vanitas is a type of painting that’s supposed to represent the inevitability of death. perfect name for the character who we have known is going to die since the start but when looking up vanitas paintings… hour glasses. they are often used to show case the limited time.

i’m sure this is no way an original thought but i had to talk about it because idk why but i thought it was the coolest thing ever. having vanitas wear an hourglass earring, that originally came from luna, making him a walking representation of what’s essentially a death painting

also the fact that vanitas’ earring seems to be done. all the blue/sand is at the bottom. signifying that time is up, that this is the end.

sad but fun analysis, upon watching vnc where Vani is holding Lunas cloak and looking at the placement of where the ash was dissapearing I like to think Luna hugged Vani in a sence (I know its not likely considering context) or put their hand on his shoulder as well futher backing that up there's three Scars on his back that vaguely resemble clawmarks so yeah have a tibbit of my thought process.

Also It just occurred to me that I read somewhere that Noé needs to hug somtbibg to sleep and most times we've seen vani 'sleep' he was hugged or held sooooo - ah If I could draw I would definitely doodle this scenario- well off to art class I go~!

Ohhh that is reallt good (and sad) observation :( the claw marks make perfect sense too it they came from luna... I'll have to draw that at some point. For now, here's something cute based on the second part of your ask!

It's not the direction I usually go with my analysis, but I've been thinking a lot lately about what it would mean for VnC if we took the fear of the blue moon as something fully rational and correct.

Like, given that our main characters are The Blue Moon Guy and The Guy That Thinks The Blue Moon's Beautiful, I know I have a tendency (and I think the fandom overall has a tendency) to side with Noé and say that the blue moon really is beautiful, actually. We know that the human Vanitas isn't a danger to vampires, and the blue moon is tied to him, so of course we want to say that their fear is unfounded.

However, there's a pretty good argument to be made that fearing/rejecting the blue moon as a symbol isn't unreasonable. Regardless of the actions of Vanitas and Luna (and whether Luna really is behind the origin of curses or not), there's weight to that blue moon as a symbol of misfortune. Vampires' fear of it seems almost instinctual, rather than cultural. And on a meta level narratively, everything to do with Vanitas, Luna, and the blue moon is very deeply tied to death.

In a lot of ways, on both in-universe and meta levels, the blue moon fundamentally is a symbol of death and destruction. So what does that mean for those that find it beautiful?

We know that Teacher finds the blue moon beautiful, but we also know that he seems to take a perverse enjoyment from the suffering of others. This is the man that takes in damaged children simply to set them on the path to destruction and watch with fascination as they're forced into horrible choices. Of course he'd find the cultural symbol of death beautiful. His taste in beauty is not something that I trust.

And then there's Noé.

And again, through main character/narrator bias, I'm always inclined to side with him and agree with his perception, but what if he really is off-kilter here? What if his adoration of the blue moon, though good insofar as it helps keep him from judging Vanitas, is otherwise not something good or rational?

There's something really fitting and intriguing about Noé Archiviste, the man entranced by death.

But like—Furina as Vanitas from Case Study of Vanitas?? Both are sad blue French people who have trust issues. They’re kind.(it’s just a lot harder to see) They wear black and blue. They’re short. They’re sad. They’re traumatized. They both have identity issues(as far as I know). They have SEVERE trust issues. They both wear gloves. They speak French. They have inhuman (they glow you cannot tell me otherwise/they’re unnatural)blue eyes.

They’re technically both not human. (Furina had the brain of a human but her body was originally Focalors’ so not human by technicality. Also she has no parents or blood relatives so she’s more so an entity in my mind, also I don’t think she can die via primordial sea[brainrot for another day])

They have dead inhuman blue mentors. (Luna/Focalors) (don’t like Focalors still)

They don’t tell anyone about their past.

Furina would totally threaten to kill anyone who tried to pry inside her memories especially if this is before end of prophecy. (Sorry Nahida, but you won’t be spared if you try) (traveler too, they should have gotten a good smack down for invasion of privacy and then brushing it off like it was nothing)

But then, who would be her Noè? 🤔 I’m a confident shipper of wanderer X Furina but he doesn’t exactly act like Noè from VNC. Hmmmm. Can’t be Lyney or Lynette, or Arlecchino(I still hate her).

Freminet is a maybe cuz he’s Fatui.

I don’t feel like Clorinde would work.

Maybe Navia or Chevruse? I like the idea of Chevruse more for some reason.

Can’t be Neuvillette since he’s like-Count Orlok or Rugen vibes.

Wriothesley just doesn’t work.

So maybe Sigewinne? Meh

No one in Fontaine really fits the dynamic or Noè personality I’m looking for.

So what about the other nations? Hmmm.

Though I probably should have asked if you’ve even heard of or seen Case Study of Vanitas before rambling about it. It’s my favorite anime, if you haven’t seen it you totally should!

vnc 55.5: some scattered thoughts

Heya fellow vnc simps, long time no see! I apologize for now empty this blog’s been in the past two months, but can’t… exactly… say it won’t continue in the future, as it probably will. however I do have tHoughts and eMOTIONS on vnc 55.5, so here’s some scattered thoughts on the incredibly beautiful im in agony oh god mochijun why chapter 55.5

as always, massive spoilers for VnC 55.5 ahead!

VnC 55.5 feels like the midpoint of VnC as a series. It might not actually be the middle, but it feels like a huge turning point for both Vanitas and Noé’s relationship and the narrative as a whole. VnC 55.5 neatly answers two of the biggest questions the story’s been following from the very start— 1) why does Noé kill Vanitas, and 2) why did Vanitas kill Luna. The two driving mysteries behind the Exposition Universalle arc and the story as a whole are given… if not exactly complete answers, definite outlines of answers.

It almost feels too abrupt.

I think a lot of this abruptness comes from Vanitas’s sudden change in attitude and demeanor. He’s taken a complete 180 from how he was acting just a few hours ago. Why did Vanitas change his outlook on sharing the secrets of what happened “that night” so quickly? Why didn’t Vanitas just tell all this to Mikhail and Noé last night? Did he think Mikhail wouldn’t have accepted that answer, or would’ve told Noé to invade Vanitas’s memories to check? Why was Vani so insistent on hiding this perfectly reasonable explanation for killing Luna in the first place?

Let’s try and think about some possible reasons for this sudden change in behavior.

Firstly, it seems like Vanitas has finally given up the security he got from insisting that his ‘revenge on Luna’ was born out of a hatred for them. He still calls his mission revenge upon the vampire of the blue moon, but it seems like it’s closer to revenge for Luna than revenge upon them. Vani seems to be slowly accepting the fact that he didn’t truly hate Luna, and is doing what he’s doing at least partially because he saw them as the mother he never had.

Secondly… something definitely changed in the VaniVerse after that conflict with Comte. I still can’t get that expression Vanitas had right before Comte left out of my mind. I’m pretty sure he realized something, or remembered something, or came to some sort of conclusion. I’ve no idea what that realization was but I feel like that little moment was important.

And thirdly, most crucially, Vanitas has given up on making Noé kill him.

The most devastating part of this chapter for me was the realization that Vanitas didn’t keep Noé around to protect himself from others. Vanitas kept Noé around to protect others from himself. After their initial fight, Vanitas determined that Noé would likely be strong and sturdy and morally good enough to kill him if necessary. So he recruited him. Ostensibly as a shield, but in truth as a failsafe.

Despite being incredibly strong, Vanitas never goes on missions involving cursebearers alone. The only time we see him intentionally go off by himself is when he’s facing the human Chasseurs. Even during the first chapter, Vanitas has Dante by his side. He seems largely disinterested the whole time and provides no considerable help to Vani during the fight. But Dante is there, watching, the whole time. And Dante has a gun.

With this we can read Vanitas’s behavior throughout the past 55.5 chapters of VnC in a whole new light. His constant cheerful responses to Noé’s animosity back during the Parisian Excursion arc were goofy funtimes back when I first read ‘em, but now I just see Vanitas pulling what we see him later do with Jeanne— acting like a complete asshole in order to push people away from him. Remember that bonus comic from a while back, where Vanitas asks Noé if he’s really that interested in kisses after their first encounter with Jeanne and Luca? I thought that was just more cute adorable funtimes with some extra fanservice on the side. But now… holy shit, Vanitas was actually flirting with Noé in an active attempt to make Noé dislike him.

Vanitas’s cheerful responses to Noé’s animosity aren’t him being goofy or arrogant, it’s him purposefully acting like the type of person he likes the least. He wants Noé to keep disliking him. Because Noé can’t get too close, or Noé might hesitate when the decisive moment inevitably arrives.

But Noé doesn’t do what Vanitas wants. He just pushes and pushes and gets closer and closer. And every time Noé starts to get too close, we see Vanitas shove him away. But Vanitas can’t keep this up forever, and when his latest and most violent attempt to make Noé despise him fails, Vanitas truly gives up on making Noé do what he wants. He gives up on making Noé kill him. And because of that, he’s now able to tell Noé the truth about the past and his intentions behind their partnership.

I’m absolutely intrigued by how Vanitas is gonna behave around Noé from now on. Because this feels like… this feels like the huge turning point their relationship has been building towards from the very start. This feels like the culmination of everything they’ve been through and everything they’ve been building towards. They are finally at least somewhat able to admit they love each other [platonically or romantically] without veiling it behind walls of dislike and animosity. And I seriously can’t wait to see how they adapt to this change in the status quo in whatever challenge they’ll be facing next.

The tragedy of all this is, of course… even though Vanitas has given up on making Noé kill him, we as the readers know how the story’s going to end. Noé is going to fulfill Vanitas’s wish. He’s going to kill him. It isn’t a matter of if, just when and how.

The moment Vanitas started talking about his wish I knew it was coming. I knew he was gonna say it. I knew he was gonna have that same wish Louis had, the wish that’s haunted Noé since the day Louis died.

I knew it was coming and it still feckin hurt me.

Interestingly, Noé doesn’t react the way he did with Louis. He doesn’t immediately refuse. He just quietly starts to cry.

Noé’s definitely upset here, but I can’t help but feel like he’s also just a little bit relieved. He couldn’t save Louis, because by the time he reached that crucial moment when Louis could have told him anything it was already too late. But now Vanitas has told him, and now he knows, and now he can do something about it. He can sit next to Vanitas, lean on him so he can’t just run away, and talk to him properly.

And then, of all things, Vanitas apologizes to Noé, and tells him that even though this is what he wants Noé to do, he’s accepted that he can’t make it happen. They can talk to each other properly, and maybe Noé can reach out and save Vanitas.

Except he can’t.

Instead, he’s going to kill him.

One of my main questions going into 55.5 was whether the Exposition Universalle arc was over or just getting started. This chapter really makes me lean towards the former. Mikhail gets what feels like a temporary farewell in this chapter, and it seems like we probably won’t see him again for a solid amount of time. If I had to make a guess, I think Comte and Mikhail’s story is gonna get set on the back burner a bit in favor of a few other arcs in the meantime (@/ gano and the vampire eradication faction, @/ the senate and its hunt for chloé and JJ, @/ the dhams, @/ loki, @/spi—-).

So Mikhail was all over the place this chapter, as he always is. I feel like the kids psyche is just so completely broken that at this point even he has a hard time determining when he’s actually displaying genuine emotion and when he’s acting in a certain way to get what he wants. At his core Mikhail has an incredibly simple motivation and value system (hates pain, likes kind people, wants to be happy with Luna and Vanitas forever), but his morality was completely twisted by his upbringing before he even hit the human experimentation lab, and then the complexities of the situation he’s ended up in with Luna and Vanitas have just made things even worse. (side note, I still don’t understand why Vanitas didn’t just tell Mikhail what happened to Luna on that night, and it makes me think he’s still hiding a considerable portion of the truth of what happened to Luna from the fam, if not outright lying.)

Mikhail seems genuinely horrified by the idea that Luna’s death might be his fault, and he seems genuinely upset when Vanitas tells him he’d prefer it if Noé were the one to kill him. But I also think Mikhail knows when to play up his childish emotional response and when to turn it off when Vanitas isn’t responding to it. And it just. Mikhail… just… holds head in hands… he’s so broken. I wish Misha could just feckin cry without wondering if someone will respond to his crying. Express his emotions and his childishness without also using them as an attempt to manipulate someone into doing what he wants them to do. But that’s what the world around him has shaped him into.

While we’re on the subject of Mikhail… Noé’s guilt over Misha’s injuries is palpable and I love to see it.

other neato stuff this chapter

In no particular order,

we get solid confirmation that Luna made Mikhail their kin before turning Vanitas. Strangely, Vanitas seems much more competent with his Book than Mikhail is— were they turned at around the same time? Or did Luna refuse to teach Mikhail to use the book after turning him for fear that he might be rewritten?

Vanoé : Why it's canon pt. 2

Haven't seen S2 yet? GO WATCH IT RN BEFORE YOU READ THIS POST! You're missing out my fellow Vanoé shipper.

Okay, hear me out.

I was lazing around for about 2 weeks trying to decide if I should post about this or not but a lot of people liked the first part so I'm here with more perfectly reliable evidence and once again, here to explain why Vanoé is canon.

What was that? Sorry, I couldn't hear you through the sound of Noé's feelings for Vanitas growing.

YES! THAT'S RIGHT!

Noé growing feelings for Vanitas is hinted a LOT lately in the anime.

If you're new and haven't seen my first post, feel free to go check that out before reading this one because it'll make a lot more sense.

What did we see in the last few episodes of VNC S2?

Yes. Lover's quar- I mean.. Noé and Vanitas fighting.

Now, why did they fight in the first place?

Let's take a trip down the memory lane and go over the plot with me.

Mikhail, aka. Misha, who's also known as Vanitas's little brother, holds Dominique hostage in asking Noé a favor.

He threatens him that Dominique will take her own life at Mikhail's signal if Noé does not cooperate.

Mikhail desperately wants to know why Vanitas killed their Father, Luna, the Vampire of the Blue Moon.

Knowing that Noé can see memories of the person Noé drinks blood out of, his favor was to originally make Noé drink Vanitas's blood.

Noé who's confused, asks about the Father Mikhail mentions.

Mikhail proceeds to mock him and frustrate him in a way by saying Noé has been with Vanitas for so long but knows nothing about him.

In this panel, Noé expression is most shocked and taken back.

He can't say anything to Mikhail because what he said was true.

But why? Why is he so angered and wearing such a paining expression?

Of course, Mikhail has taken someone very close to him hostage, and gave him so much pressure that made him feel like he had no choice but to give in to Mikhail.

But was his expression the same when he saw Dominique taken as hostage?

Of course, he has that same shocked face, but it's no where near as similar to the expression he made when he realized he knows nothing about Vanitas.

Knowing nothing about Vanitas- why would that bother him so much?

Of course, Noé has desired to have a taste of Vanitas's blood but that has nothing to do with knowing one's background.

So why?

Noé is interested in Vanitas.

When you're interested in someone, you want to know all about them, do you not?

What they like and hate, what kind of person they are, and what their past was like- how they lived before they met you.

You want to get to know them so you can grow closer- and gain even the slightest possibility of being able to be close enough to ask them out.

That frustration comes from not knowing about the person you're interested in.

A scene from Doukyuusei (Classmates) shows the two boys in an argument, both pained and hurt that they know nothing about each other.

Noé has grown feelings for Vanitas unconsciously.

Of course, he does not realize he holds such special feelings for Vanitas, but he is interested in him.

Not platonically, but romantically.

Noé is angered, frustrated and bothered by the fact he knows nothing about the person he's interested in.

For what looked like wearing a heartbroken look in his eyes, Noé gets taken over by his own anger and fights Vanitas.

The two clashes shedding blood in the rain, Noé snaps back to reality from seeing his own reflection.

In the end, Vanitas couldn't find himself to kill Noé and the issue solves out smoothly without any character deaths.

Though we are introduced to a new villain to the story (Noe's Teacher, The Comte de Saint Germain), we get to see a beautiful scene at the last episode of S2.

Vanitas says if he is going to be killed, he wishes for Noé to do it.

Those words are more powerful than you think.

When Vanitas first met Jeanne, she declared that she will kill him the next time they cross paths.

Of course, she didn't but this is one serious topic with Vanitas choosing who he wants to get killed by and all that.

Not to mention, the person he wants to get killed by his not Jeanne, but Noé.

We all know Vanitas's personality, and we KNOW that he is not the person to give someone the honor of killing him.

But here we are.

With all the events the two been through, this is evidence they have become to trust one another more and become closer to the point they'll be able to call each other "friends".

Last but not least, we get to see the beautiful, warm smiles of our favorite duo.

This scene of Noé offering a hand to Vanitas and him accepting it is indescribably beautiful and breathtaking.

We have seen Vanitas's GENUINE smile.

Has he ever smiled like that to Jeanne?

Thought so.

Their dynamic is amazing and I can't wait for how the story will take turn.

I will be keeping my hopes up to find more Vanoé evidence to satisfy my dear readers.

It’s midnight and my birthday and it’s been less than 24 hours since I finished the Vanitas manga

...or what’s out so far, at least.

Oh boy. Took one hell of a sprint through volumes 9 and 10 because once I started, I couldn’t stop.

When I say I was genuinely terrified by Mikhail I bloody well mean it. I was anxiously awaiting Vanitas’ backstory but oh damn what a way to get it.

Speaking of, it was late at night when I read it and I was very emotional, I did almost cry for my baby. I do not deny that. Neither can I deny the fact that I felt a kind of sick twisted sadistic pleasure in seeing him suffer.

But back to Mikhail. Look, criminal masterminds don’t scare me. Child criminal masterminds are the weirdest scariest shit you can put in front of me. A kid should not be that clever and that evil. He kind of reminded me of Q from Bungou Stray Dogs, with the whole mind control thing and the killing intent. The only thing that makes Q’s appearance more terrifying is the doll. Thank God Mikhail didn’t have a doll.

I am dying to know what exactly brought Vanitas to kill Luna. I don’t trust them for shite but so far, it seems like they didn’t do anything bad to the kiddos.

But oh boy. The fight.

Once again, it’s midnight. I’m not going to break it down. It’s one mushed porridge of information in my head and I’ll keep it that way for now. (I will for sure re-read it before the next chapter comes out.)

It’s no secret that I have one hell of a crush on Vanitas. @fullmetalgirl98​ can confirm and good grief how much did I yell at her in the past two days? A lot. Not too much though. She deserved it. Anyway.

I do have a crush on this boy. He’s so bloody attractive (in these chapters, literally) - but with that crazed look in his eyes and covered head to toe in blood, and with those fighting techniques that are nothing short of vicious, he has never been sexier.

I fall to my knees before a clever man. And a clever man that’s lost it? I haven’t been reading and writing mystery novels all my life for nothing.

We’ve seen him cry. Ohhhh I did talk about sadistic pleasure, didn’t I?

This entire moment with Noé was some of the gayest shit I’ve seen recently. And there’s Given on my recent watches.

Honestly these chapters did nothing but prove once more that the words gay and Noé are just about interchangeable. Just like the words Vanitas and bisexual.

These are some of the most beautiful, heart-wrenching, and undoubtedly gay manga panels I’ve seen. This is a hill I’m willing to die on.

No regrets we die like Vanitas probably will.

And the most beautiful thing about all of this is that I have absolutely no idea what will happen next, and it is destroying me and exciting me all at once. I have fallen into the VNC rabbit hole and I’m not getting out of it for a bit, at least until the idea of having to wait for new chapters settles in my mind and I fully recover from whatever the fuck this was.

The last two volumes were a fever dream that I lived through for two hours between 11pm and 1am last night. I don’t even know how I managed to fall asleep afterwards.

for chrysimordred, im boring rn… im jst thinking abt their modern au and im fleshing out their canon storyline (where i pay homage to quest for camelot by taking away mordred’s eyesight—to hurt chrysi specifically, because it IS partially her fault 💔💔💔). BUT IN THE MODERN AU, mordred is SOOO flirty and chrysi does NOT know how to deal with it. they’ll show up to the same coffee shop to do hw and when he’s in front of her in line, he’ll say his order, then turn around to her and be like, “and what did you want again?” chrysi is torn because she doesn’t like accepting help much BUT ALSO her drink is expensive and she doesn’t want to pay for it 🤧 the beginning of a meaningful relationship right there! that, and also mordred is chrysi’s model for her art and.. he does model things 🥰 for her! and there’s also ghosts around too + mordred can still speak with animals, so they bond over their crazy wild gifts while also running around the college campus doing random little cases!! also chrysi believes mordred doesn’t ACTUALLY like her because he’s still not over his sorta-ex (keeping the weird age gap between him and his uncle, where he’s a year older than his uncle, because wow… imagine trying to explain that to ur crush. it’s like modern family fjdkcjdksjcjfks). BUT NO, MORDRED IS IN LOVE. fell in love the moment chrysi was like “i love hiking in the woods and trying to find dead bodies” HELLO??? chrysijacks au i’m thinking of… oh god, i think of so many at all times of the day, UMMM—CURRENTLY i’ve been thinking abt my hercules au because i’m drawing it!! i’ve been thinking abt the scene where jacks backs up into cupid’s bow and he’s like “… oh god, i am in love with her.” constantly thinking abt his sinking dread whenever he falls in love with chrysi in every single au. he’s so horrified and he’s also so deeply in love that he can’t do anything about it. OH, IVE ALSO BEEN STRONGLY THINKING ABT MY LAST APPRENTICE AU BCUZ JACKS WATCHING CHRYSI DIE AND ALMOST GOING ON A RAMPAGE (almost tries to kill luna rune, but simeon was NOT fucking having that. then jacks tries to kill simeon, but luna rune reminds him that he’s holding chrysi’s dead body in his arms and she doesn’t deserve her lover hurting others in his grief. instead, he stays with chrysi’s body for the next week—since it can’t rot, as she’s not human!). then chrysi coming back, but she’s slightly different… THEN AZURE COMING BACK AND RUINING EVERYTHING MORE!!! always thinking abt that… BUT i’ve also been thinking about the before all that happens—where chrysi and jacks make their home one for the two of them, and where he gets to help her hunt ghouls and monsters and he kisses her and they walk around her garden and ignore the fact that they have buried ghouls alive under all the flowers 🖤🖤🖤 yeah…. i’m incoherent rn because i love chrysijacks and i don’t know what else to say other than they love each other so much.

WAIT. also thinking about chrysijacks vnc au because i canNOT get over the mental image of jacks trying to get advice “for a friend”, only to be told, “sounds like your friend loves this girl” and jacks to go “HUH?????????” also, this is the au where azure’s the one watching chrysi and jacks flirt and he hates it..,,., how the turntables…….. chrysijacks warming up scene lives in my heart rent free at all times, where they’re so vulnerable and naked (hehe) and jacks finally starts letting himself hope that he might have another chance—cause i LOVE my aus where chrysi and jacks are exes that never officially dated, but jacks wants to win chrysi back so badly… it makes my heart happy 🖤🖤🖤

OKAY, so jacks dresses chrysi up in lots of bold and flashy dresses and he doesn’t frequently think very far ahead about how she can fight in dresses (he’s thinking solely about how very pretty she will be and he thinks of nothing else… well, maybe how fun it’ll be for the dress to be taken care of by the end of the ball 🤔 slutty bitch.), whereas mordred likes seeing chrysi in her more comfortable dresses that she can run in!…. if it so happens that she has slits in her skirts so she can run and he happens to see a bit of leg w her dagger strapped to her thigh, then so be it 🤷‍♀️ he isn’t one to complain! but preferably, mordred likes her being dressed up the way she was up in his alcove 😌

basically, jacks thinks solely abt aesthetics, whereas mordred will think abt the logistics of chrysi moving around in her dresses!!

examples for jacks:

he’ll always give her low cut dresses like this, then he’ll couple them with long skirts like this:

somebody steps on that thing and chrysi’s going sailing backwards. or, more frequently, she’ll jst tear the skirt and leave what was stepped on behind. jacks can’t get mad at her because he messes up his own clothing frequently too. but he’s still irritated.

mordred gives chrysi lighter dresses, something easier to move in, and much more of a goddess aesthetic than jacks’s princess one:

Similar to 1), it exists in the first place, and it’s even quite big and outstanding.

4) Domi’s screentime

If the 2nd cour only covers the Gevaudan arc, then Domi would barely appear, even if she’s one of the main characters. #Let the voice actor work XD

It’s also good that Luca would get more lines (that show his personality and relationship with her) as well!

5) Mikhail and Domi in the 2nd OP

Not only both appear, but also both are drawn in a quite big size (Amelia, too, kinda). Besides, Domi is looking at Noe, while he’s not recognizing her (and she’s not actively letting him know, either) ^^;; which is like their current relationship problem(?).

6) Luna, Vanitas, and Noe in the 2nd ED

I know Luna “appears” at the end of the Gevaudan arc, but I think the ED overall depicts / symbolizes the relationship of the three (Luna, Vani, and Noe), especially in the Mikhail arc. Both Vani and Noe are under the shadow of Luna (and Mikhail). Still, in the end they’ll make peace and move on towards light for better (even if Vani eventually dies at some point).

It’d also make a good flow / connection that Luna gets mentioned in the Gevaudan arc (”Lu...” => “Luna”) and finally revealed with more details and backstories in the next Mikhail arc.

7) Suspicious Murr in the 2nd OP and episode 13 (feat. Teacher / The Shapeless One)

Murr is smirking in the OP, even if it/he really...didn’t have to. I mean, Murr has never made that kind of face so far - not until ch 55 part 1, at least :’)))

They also bothered to show Murr close-up in the recap part (at the beginning of ep 13) for quite long somehow, as if...something is important :’)))

After ch 55 part 1, I suspected ch 55 part 2 might end with half-asleep, half-crying Noe hugging Vanitas and apologizing to him, thinking he’s Louis - just like when Noe accidentally hugged Domi in the past (ch 46). Noe & Vani stay (sleep?) together on Noe’s bed...while Murr is quietly looking at them with some creepy smirk. It would highly imply / confirm that The Shapeless One has been always watching them through Murr (and possibly the mirror-ish decoration on Noe’s hat as well) all the time. Now Murr’s appearances above reinforce my thoughts to me :’)))

The 2nd cour ep13 (new content) starts with Noe (earnestly as always) sending his letter or saying hello to The Shapeless One, as he’s his Teacher. It’d be some heartbreaking but brilliant contrast when the 2nd cour ends with how much un-trustable and un-reliable Teacher actually is, revealing Noe has been pretty fooled and consequently “wasted” his effort and sincerity for someone like him the entire time ^^;;

8) 1st cour & 2nd cour parallels

1st cour last episodes covered Noe’s sleeping habit and Vani & Noe having a quarrel (kinda) over blood-drinking, and it’d make good parallels if 2nd cour last episodes cover Vani & Noe actually fighting over blood-drinking matter and Noe sleeping while hugging Vani (Yep, I’m personally sure this will happen in the upcoming chapter(s) XP).

Also, 1st OP full version was played in the last episode of 1st cour. It’d fit very well if 1st ED full version is played when Vani & Noe fight finally ends in the last episodes of 2nd cour.

To wrap up,

I sure would’ve preferred if we got more episodes to keep the details better (ex. 26 episodes in total, or like 16 episodes for the 2nd cour, or a few 1 hour episodes). Even so, personally I’m fairly okay with the anime so far, despite the (visible) shortcomings and such. Getting an anime adaptation is very helpful to get more attention and fans into the original manga and the author, after all.

It looks like VNC anime would be similar to Mahou Tsukai no Yome (The Ancient Magus Bride) anime, in the aspect that the anime caught up with the whole original source manga available at that time. Since VNC manga has been delayed several times, the manga might be even one month late, who knows XD

I’m not blaming the author btw! I personally suspect this might be rather why she has been super busy for months; even aside from her (health and) roles as the original author, she probably had to explain/show what’s to happen (ex. rough sketches for the entire Domi & Mikhail arc) in advance - so that the anime team could animate them in time (it needs a lot of time and people to make an anime). Of course, these are just my guesses with no source :P

After watching episode 1, I binged all of Vanitas no Carte in 4 days lol. It seems harder to tell what the VnC manga community is like rn due to the saturation of new anime content, but it’d be nice to meet some people and talk about it :)

Since I sped through the manga so fast, a lot of details have blurred together. Vanitas’ kiss with Jeanne was way more uncomfortable than I remembered. Which I suppose should be the intent, since it’s a non-con kiss, and that helps to not portray it in a positive light. I’m hearing many anime watchers are cancelling the show because of it though?

I saw a post mentioning this and saying it happened because Vanitas is a horrible person, which had yet to be established. And a reply on the post agreeing and saying he’s cruel. So like, am I crazy, or are we sure we read the same manga? Vanitas sure af ain’t no model citizen and likely a pretty maladjusted person considering his past, but to say he’s horrible? Like yes, there’s a non-con kiss. But what other events happen that would justify calling him horrible? Although he won’t admit it, it’s clear he cares for Noé, and he has saved multiple curse-bearers such as Chloe. We know he initially messes with Jeanne out of amusement of how she reacts, which yeah, pretty jerk move. But (to me) it feels pretty genuine when he turns around and tells her he wants to make her wishes come true. And proceeds to be bedridden for several days after it turns out his jokes might not be jokes anymore.

Lastly, for the sake of anime watchers, additional comments under the cut.

Only things I can think of that could lead into (but still not really) calling him horrible, would be what’s going on in the most recent manga chapters. His quick dismissal of his and Noé relationship, keeping Noé in the dark all the time, and his lack of care or understanding of Noé’s reasons (wanting to save Domi) are all bad things. But far as I can see, there’s still a lot we don’t know about Vanitas’ backstory, most importantly why he killed Luna. And yet, at the same time, he’s also keeping strongly with Luna’s plea that no one ever take his memories. He clearly must have reasons for what he’s doing, going so beyond that he placed a hypnotic suggestion on himself so that no emotions or attachments would get in the way of that last line of defense.
