WAIT WAIT WAIT!!! I just realized that Mark Bition’s hit on Conrad came AFTER Norrell’s death! Which means that, even though Mark probably hated Conrad before (as did Dan Fucks), it was the KEY that pushed him over the edge and made him order the hit! Elias wasn’t trying to finally murder his conscious, his BOSS was so that Elias would continue working for them. Because he raised a MORAL objection! Which probably means Don Avaricce is being controlled by the Key too!!! That’s why they put a hit out on Conrad at the SAME TIME!

Probably says a lot about the fandoms I’ve been in that I am incapable of looking at DA Mark “M” Bition and not imagining that he’s the spitting image of Markiplier.

i love the idea of the psychometer intruding on the mind. i love it because it creates the possibility for the bad guy not to be M. Bition or Don Avaricci or Conrad Schintz, but to be something entirely alien. because i don't think that the "lesson" we should take from the allegory of mentopolis is that ambition is inherently evil or that greed is a moral failing or that conscience is fundamentally anathema to individual success. none of those things are true. what is true is that there are things outside of ourselves that can influence the way we think about ourselves and the world, the way we interact with others, and it's important to be aware. we are not immune to propaganda.

Madame Loathing being corrupted by the psychometer from the very first episode of Mentopolis really paints the “that is incredible information for you to have volunteered” scene in a different light for me.

like originally it’s a fun meta joke about Brennan giving a player information about what they should do next, but if you consider it within canon? Madame Loathing was trying to give The Fix as much information on Conrad so that he could find him and kill him as quickly as possible, since she had already corrupted M. Bition to order The Fix to do that.

and Hank catches it! he realizes getting this much information from an NPC is unusual! and while Brennan deflects, he also makes the in canon character deflect (“focusing on me will only make me stronger”) in a very menacing way. some damn good foreshadowing on Brennan’s part.
