It's far too easy to manipulate Ma Dai, Fa Zheng knows, so easy that it almost feels beneath him to even bother.

It takes just a mention of his beloved cousin, so foolhardy and reckless in battle that enemies may lurk closer than his friends, or a reference to Zhuge Liang's orders, cool-headed and cold-blooded in his strategies, or perhaps an off-hand comment about what a shame it would be for the last of the Ma clan to die in disgrace in these unforgiving mountains, should he be forced onto the frontlines to test his footwork in the dance of Zhang He's glittering, gore-dripping claws.

As easy it is to ensnare him in honour and duty and righteousness, it's just as tempting to see him fall to darkness, and see what lies beneath that smiling mask.

how do you feel about ma chao? do you have any heacanons about ma dai? how is ma dai in the current day AU?

Oh wow, didn’t think I’d get an ask since it’s been some time since I’ve posted but here we are.

1. I like Ma Chao. He has a fun play style and was briefly a favorite of mine til his cousin showed up. I’m not a big fan of his “justice” gimmick because I think it turns him into a one note character but he’s still good overall.

2. So I have my main head canon which is his ship with Guan Yinping, my second favorite character in DW. I think both their personalities play off really well Her seemingly bright and optimistic view on life is a direct contrast to his fake optimism and his more pessimistic/realistic view. There’s a great fanfic (that I hold no biased opinion what so ever ;)) called Ink-Painted World and it, in my opinion, best captures what their relationship would look like. Aside from that, other headcanons include his hat being passed from his mother before she disappeared. He is an extremely skilled fighter both with and without weapons which is why he is always training with other characters all the time. In Orochi canon, him and Kunoichi, my all-time favorite character in the series, go on missions together all the time.

3. Ma Dai in a modern day AU would be a street or struggling artist. He has the ability to paint landscapes and portraits but he loves painting surrealist and expressionist art. He sells his everyday day paintings he’s able to produce quickly while he takes his time making the ones he wants to. He also isn’t afraid to take to the streets for his art whether it’s through graffiti, murals, or other means. He’s generally liked by most characters with his close net being his “bros” which he hangs out with at bars. Same headcanons apply here too.

Hopefully this answers things. Haven’t done this in ages but always appreciate it nonetheless.

One of the funniest things about Ma Chao and Ma Dai is that their surname, 馬, literally means horse. Just. 'Horse'. I feel like there absolutely has to be jokes about that somewhere because if there's anything the Chinese love, it's puns and wordplay. I know it's not uncommon for him to be portrayed riding a horse, but that's the same for a lot of military figures in this era. I think I also vaguely remember something about his family or province or whatever being known for their horses?

In a similar vein, Lu Xun, Lu Su, and Lü Meng's surnames are all different Lu's. They're written as 陸, 魯, and 呂 respectively. Lü Meng has the same surname as the infamous Lü Bu, both written as 呂. Listen, Chinese has a lot of homophones and not a whole lot of surnames, stuff like this happens frequently.

So if you ever wondered if all of Wu's Lu strategists are related, no, at least not closely. But making that assumption wouldn't be off base since it was fairly common for huge nerds-I mean, strategists, to have other strategist relatives though, between people like the Zhuges and the Xuns as the best known examples. And of course a lot of people tend to not write or type the umlaut in Lü, partially because it's a pain to type on a lot of traditional keyboards, but also most English speakers don't recognize the difference anyway since English doesn't use umlauts.

Refs for the fem fortress designs I threw around in this post!! Because I am a big fan of woman and also a little bit insane abt this little idea

tldr for anyone who doesn’t want to check out the og post: I wanted to make a counterpart team to the og mercs that was all girls but also like. Vaguely genderbend-adjacent? Genderbending but cooler. Some of these characters resemble genderbends more than others but they’re all their own characters that exist somewhere within the universe (a couple are even canon characters because I think Zhanna Deserves a Gun!) why are they also a RED team? I don’t know! And I’m too tired to try and bullshit some canon-sounding excuse for it. The administrator wanted to fuck with the og mercs or smth for fun

I probably have more to say about them but I’ll save anyone reading this from what would probably end up being multiple paragraphs of personality and relationship descriptions ! Enjoy a bunch of women with traced weapons (bc you’re insane if you think I was gonna draw them freehanded)
