California Quail
With such a distinctive crest, it’s no wonder that the California quail is the California state bird. The males and females have alternating calls, which fit together neatly with one another as they call back and forth. Quails will often take in other quail chicks and raise them as their own. They primarily gain their moisture intake from the insects they eat, since they live in a hot dry environment. Learn More!
MacGregor's Bowerbird
Another bowerbird. This time, their bower is a large tower of sticks that they will often put sticky pieces of fecal matter and dead berries around the edge. Don’t let their drab appearance fool you, the MacGregor’s bowerbird also has a crest of feathers that springs into action during their mating dance, like a big orange Mohawk. They’re also excellent mimics, giving the female their full sound board of what they’ve heard. Learn More!

Parrots are far from the only bird able to mimic human speech. Many other birds, like the crow or the mynah. Other animals like my personal favorite, the Macgregor’s bowerbird (Amblyornis macgregoriae), can even mimic other environmental sounds. Here’s a very cool clip from the Netflix documentary Dancing with the Birds, showcasing the wide range of the Macgregor’s bowerbird.

This is the bower of the MacGregor's Bowerbird. A unique bowerbird which makes towers and not reverse arches. It is purely amazing and they are one of my favourite birds ever.
The Sambia liken the communal courtship dances of this species to their own dance ceremonies, except with a gender inversion (all-female bird groups versus all-male human groups).²⁸
28. Herdt (Guardians of the Flutes, p. 91) tentatively identifies this as the "crested bird of paradise"; however, the description of its round display platforms (constructed of twigs and straw, with a central pole) strongly suggests that this is actually a species of bowerbird. Most likely it is MacGregor's bowerbird (Amblyornis macgregoriae), whose "maypole" bower type matches this description, and whose orange crest also fits the description of this species provided by Herdt. For further details, see Gilliard, E. T. (1969) "MacGregor's Gardener Bower Bird", in Birds of Paradise and Bower Birds, pp. 300-311 (Garden City, N.Y.: Natural History Press); Johnsgard, P. A. (1994) Arena Birds: Sexual Selection and Behavior, pp. 206, 211-12 (Washington, D.C., and London: Smithsonian Institution Press). Among the Kaluli people, the (male) Raggiana's Bird of Paradise and other brightly colored birds are also considered female; men adorn themselves with their plumes to acquire the beauty of these supposedly feminine creatures (Feld, S. [1982] Sound and Sentiment: Birds, Weeping, Poetics, and Song in Kaluli Expression, pp. 55, 65-66 [Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press]).

Their nests are fascinating and beautiful. I love that they are crow-like in collecting pretty objects. IMO, decorating their nests is more than a seductive trail of rose petals leading to the boudoir. It demonstrates the male bower bird's ability to build a sturdy structure, keep a clean and tidy home, and has exquisite taste in home decor.
What do you think?
Thanks for keeping up with requests. You are awesome!
Oh yes, bowerbirds are awesome. Here are some cool bowerbirds for you...

MacGregor’s Bowerbird (Amblyornis macgregoriae), male calling, family Ptilonorhynchidae, order Passeriformes, New Guinea
The male of the species builds an elaborate maypole type of structure which he dances and calls around, to impress females.
If you do please tell me what is your favorite bird?
sure, anytime!
my favorite bird is the macgregor's bowerbird. I learned about them on a documentary called dancing with the birds and it completely blew my mind. seriously if you have netflix go watch the documentary it was fascinating.
macgregor bowerbirds are my favourite birds ever. they are so dedicated to their craft. i want to be like them when i grow up. just a little bird and his beautiful tower
My favorite bird is a tie between the red-winged blackbird, because they remind me of home, and Macgregor’s Bowerbird because of the cool sounds they can make!
I watched Dancing with the Birds on Netflix! I can’t stop researching bird species! It’s so relaxing 😌 and they’re so pretty 🤩. I might be hyperfixated. I always say that and then they almost all the time turn out t be a spin of mine xD.
My therapist said not to overthink and analyze all these interests, just enjoy them without giving them a label, so
Here are some pretty birds for y’all ^-^
Kea
Parrot of New Zealand! The most intelligent parrot there is! They have fun not only as hatchlings, but during adulthood too and they only do it to entertain themselves. This is a sign of intelligence. Like when ravens and crows play/slide on their backs in the snow ❄️. No purpose other than pure fun!
Keas have been seen to steal hikers shoes while they’re asleep and hide those boots in the trees. They stay until the morning to watch the hikers look for their stolen items. Then they make noise that are believed to be the same for them like laughing is for us. They also usually go up to people for food and as they observed, use exchange tactics. They saw people using money, so they give leaves in exchange of food :D
Burrowing Owl
My favourite bird! I know them from Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole. Their faces are adorable because of the big eyes compared to their small bodies. Their legs are awesome too! Since they’re on the ground mostly their legs are very strong and long (compared to their sizes anyway) which is good for digging and running fast!
A bird in the ground? Fascinating!
Hooded Crow
As I mentioned Crows are very intelligent. They are also one of my favourite birds since I was littler. I had an encounter with a captive crow when I was around 9 and we were playing fetch for hours! Then I hid his treasured pebble and he went on to find it. Later he retrieved the pebble and showed me that he wanted me to hide it again! He was very precious.
I was very surprised to learn how many sounds they can mimic! It’s worth a YouTube search ;)
I also learned that if you act rude to one, then that crow tells that to the others and then later on they gang up on you xD
MacGregor’s Bowerbird
I’m especially fascinated by the mimicking of sounds! Playing kids, wood chopping, dog barking and so much more sounds they can make perfectly! Their buildings are one of the largest ones in the bird world!
Not to mention their lil hair on top of their heads x3
Andean Emerald hummingbird
There are over 360 species of hummingbirds. This in my opinion is one of the prettiest one! The turquoise colour is everything for me! Hummingbirds are all in all amazing. They hover, are so very tiny and eat nectar! Their purpose is the same as bee’s!
I also adore their feeders people put out for them :D
Snowy Plover
I just love this cutie! Although all plovers are the apple of my eyes! Their sizes and patterns are lovely ☺️ It’s interesting that for plovers females have to win over the makes and makes are the one taking care of the eggs ❤️ Also interesting fact is that the hatchlings do not get fed!
That’s all for now, since I’m in a hurry while writing this post. I just had to share.
I wanna see more pretty and interesting birdies. Do you have faves? Please share them with me ^-^
DISCLAIMER - I wrote the round one blurbs when I was very sick and half awake, so if you see any mistakes PLEASE TELL ME! Nicely, obviously, but I want to make sure they sound good for round 2. Thank you!
I know there’s a lot of them, but man there’s SO MANY GOOD BIRDS! There were a few times where people didn’t put what specific subspecies for some birds, so sometimes I’d have to choose one. I tried to choose one that represents that bird the best!
I don’t know when the polls will begin, I’m doing some research on the birds so that people can read about them before they vote.
If one of your favs didn’t make it in, don’t worry they’re a winner in my and your heart.
If you are wondering where the Pigeon (Rock Dove) is, THEY ARE THE FINAL CHAMPION! At the end of this bracket, the winner will face off against the mightily popular Rock Dove! Will they be able to beat such a tough challenger? We will see…
Also, a note on how I set this bracket up: I put all the birds in a numbered list and then used a number generator. I think the matchups we got were really interesting.
