Colombia
Tumblr media
"I'm so excited. I've never played here on my own before." Harry said as he looked over the window of his private jet, you were on your flight to Colombia after spending an incredible week in Mexico where Harry had four amazing shows filled with love, music and moments he would never forget, you were beyond happy that Harry was making amazing memories in Latin America.
"It's going to be an amazing show, baby," you looked up from your phone and saw his excited little smile, you were previously texting some of your friends from Colombia about stuff to do and places to visit over there, you knew Harry was dying to explore and walk around before the show. "I have a list of places we should visit, and I made a reservation for dinner tonight, my friends say this restaurant is the best in the city."
"That sounds lovely, darling." He let out a yawn as he got comfortable, drifting off to sleep for the rest of the flight.
After an easy landing and check in at your hotel, you went strolling around, Harry clad in his signature blue adidas jacket and you were wearing matching comfortable clothes, after some nice dinner that was even accompanied by live salsa music that Harry absolutely loved and made sure to get it added to the Late Night Talking intro and a couple of shots of Aguardiente, you guys walked around the streets of Bogota, and even tho Harry's mask was covering his lips, his eyes gave away the happiness he was feeling.
He felt at home.
"You know, I feel like you've been glowing lately," you said after a few moments of comfortable silence, walking hand in hand "You've been glowing ever since the Guadalajara show" you added, turning your head to look at him.
"I thought that only happened during pregnancy, right?" Harry asked, looking down at you.
"You glow when you're happy, baby." you smiled up at him, melting at the sight of his eyes getting even softer, he let go of your hand to wrap his arm around your shoulders and kiss the crown of your head through his mask.
"I'm very, very happy. That's for sure"
//
Peru
Tumblr media
“I’d like to begin with a massive massive thank you to you for such a warm welcome back to Peru, I remember being here in 2014 and I remember how incredible you were, and we’ve barely begun the show and you’re just as incredible tonight.” Harry said into the mic as he walked down the catwalk, you were fondly watching by the stage wings, absolutely enamored by the crowd and how beautiful Harry looked in his pink heart top,
"The last time I was here I went on a little hike with my girlfriend, who's here tonight by the way, give it up for my YN!" the screams grew louder at the mention of your name, and it didn't fail to warm your heart "We went to Machu Picchu last time, beautiful landscape, it was like watching my history books come to life," he continued, "However, I made the terrible decision to wear tight skinny jeans that day, I ended up with a nasty fabric burn on my bum," you couldn't help but laugh as you remembered how much of a cry baby Harry was when we had his little incident "Yeah, I was a naive 20 year old boy who didn't listen to his girlfriend, who persistently told him to wear more adequate clothes for the occasion." Harry turned his head towards you and sent you a wink, that didn't fail to make you blush like you were those 20 year old kids again.
"Anyway! Who's ready for more music? Mas musica Peru!" the lights went down and everyone got ready to sing and dance again, the smile on Harry's face growing bigger and his heart filled with happiness to be playing for another latin american crowd.
//
Chile
Tumblr media
"Come here. I miss you"
"And I would also love to see you in that black bathing suit x"
You laughed as you read the texts Harry sent, you were currently in Santiago, Chile, and the weather was so nice the entire crew decided to spend the day by the pool.
You made your way towards the private pool area the resort designated for you, and once you spotted your boyfriend your mouth couldn't help but water a bit.
He was in his shirtless and black swimming trucks glory, his tattoos in full display and his skin glowing, arms open for you to crawl in.
"Finally, I've missed you" he said as you laid down next to him on the lounge chair he was resting, using his arm as a pillow.
"Don't be dramatic now, I was just gone for like 30 minutes" you turned your body sideways to look at his eyes, the sparkle on them hasn't left since you arrived to Colombia.
"Still too long," he placed your hand on your bare back and caressed it softly, causing goosebumps to appear on your skin, "I don't think I'll ever be over yesterday." he said making your move to nuzzle your face on his chest, his hand not leaving your back.
"It was a great show lovie, and tomorrow will be just as good" you placed a chaste kiss on his chest, and rested your hand there.
"I mean yeah, but i was talking about the amazing blowj-" you swatted his chest before he could continue, "Harry! Your entire tour crew is around, have some class" you said, making him laugh hysterically and kiss the crown of your head multiple times.
"Baby, they know I'm not a virgin, don't be so shy now" he gave you a teasing smirk that made you roll your eyes with affection before standing up.
"I swear you're like a teenager sometimes, I'm hopping in the water, bye!"
//
Argentina
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Holy shit! Look at how packed that pit is already" Harry said as he got a peek of the stadium, it was still early but fans were already inside and waiting for him.
"You know how much your fans here love you, baby. Tonight's show is going to be crazy" you rested your chin on his shoulder, looking at the crowd with him.
"It's going to be one of the best, I can't fucking wait" excitement was evident on his voice and you couldn't help but melt a bit, the man you love was happy and that made you the happiest as well.
"They scored!" Anthony Pham's voice made you turn your heads, a bunch of the crew members were watching the Argentina vs Australia match on a small tv, and the screams from the crowd just confirmed that their country had just scored.
"Wait, put the match on the big screens, let's watch it together with the crowd" Harry said and guys from the tech crew quickly put the match on the stadium screens, making fans grow excited.
By the end of the match and by a close call, Argentina won and the crowd erupted in cheers and screams, the entire staff celebrating too and hyping the crowd.
"Go celebrate with them baby! Go on!" you urged Harry to go on stage, "You know what? Fuck it!" and he ran to the stage and hyped the crowd, celebrating the victory with them
Argentina gave him one of his best tour memories already and the shows were still yet to happen.

Good morning
I just watched the creek episode of bluey and oh my stars your country scares the hell out of me
I don't like nature, but Australia is like a new level
I'm meant to be writing a speech about mental health for school but if I think about it too hard I start crying so I'm opting not to think about it for the time being
If I start sobbing soon, you know why
But my bluey stickers were delivered. I'll get them tomorrow. (did I already tell you this? Sorry if I did)
I have absolutely zero motivation lol
If you could go and spend a week anywhere in the world, where would it be?
You're completely alone, but everywhere is fully stocked. Restaurants and the like. I mean like, don't go anywhere for anyone. You can't meet people.
An eye for an eye because I'd actually like to answer this question: either Paris or Florence. The Louvre is somewhere I'd kill to see (THEY HAVE VERMEERS) And obviously the uffizi gallery is massive as well in Florence. No vermeers though so probably lower on my list.
Have a wonderful day
not good morning. our internet is being unpredictable (long story)
i don’t think i’ve seen that episode but thank you?
i will not tell you specifically where i live then
do it on monday, it’s the weekend
you’ll have to show me some!! (you have but i don’t mind)
Machu Picchu (i don’t think it’s like an actual thing so i’d have to stay in a nearby town and commute there during the day) or Rome (because. obviously? i love the roman empire. in a horrible histories nerd way not a war way)
sounds very fun. art. (i don’t know art)
i’m surprised my internet is letting me drype this but i just realised it probably won’t let me post it
you too

5. favourite song in your native language?
My favorite song in Spanish is Ojos color sol by Calle 13 feat Silvio Rodriguez
But a song from Colombia that is my favorite is La casa en el aire by Rafael Escalona
9. which of your neighbouring countries would you like to visit most/know best?
Perú! There's a few Peruvian restaurants here and my goooood the food is delicious! Plus I'd like to see Machu Picchu
15. a saying, joke, or hermetic meme that only people from your country will get?
I think each country must have like a lot of those, one that comes to my mind now is the "Quien pidió pollo?" (The literal translation is Who asked for chicken?) Which is something we say as a compliment, like you see some is looking handsome and you ask them that to tell them they're looking fine xd
And for the hilarity of the direct translation, asgsjd there's this expression "mamar gallo" (to suck rooster/cock) which means to joke around, to pull someone's leg.

What has Lima got to offer?
Although we were both knackered our body clocks were still on UK time so we were up, showered and dressed by 7.00am local time (midday UK time). I had a good breakfast while MM had 4 cups of coffee, then booked a walking tour of Lima for tomorrow (Friday) and sent a complaint to Booking.com about last night's fiasco requesting compensation.
Tasks completed we decided to walk from the hotel into the centre of the city. Lima is situated on the cliffs overlooking the Pacific ocean so we headed to the cliff tops from the hotel to find ourselves in the Chinese garden. We continued along the cliff tops, through the Garden of Love until we reached the shopping mall. MM decided to buy a disposable vape here. Strawberry flavoured and, it turns out, one favoured by white van man. Every time she takes a puff she emits a cloud of vapour that can be seen from space - she can't hide from me now! However, we are now being followed by the Lima fire brigade.
From here we headed away from the coast and into the city centre. Stopped for lunch at a local restaurant and then went to buy a Peruvian sim card. The very helpful lady was very sorry when she had to report that she couldn't activate the card as "the office people have gone to lunch". Eventually it got resolved and we walked to Huaca Pucllana, a site that predates the Inca's and Machu Picchu by 1,000 years and took 300 years to build - fascinating.
I have to say that the locals that we've met so far are so friendly and helpful. Although English isn't as widely spoken as it is in many parts of the world we are managing to communicate and people want to help.
MM tells me that she has done 23,690 steps today which equates to 9.35 miles. However, her legs are so short that it's probably only 5 miles for a "normal" person!
Walking trip tomorrow then fly to Cuzco on Saturday.

The Sacred Valley
Impulsive like me, Irene booked a last minute trip to come visit me in Cusco. Only a few days before she left, Jonathan decided to tag along as well. They arrived on Thursday morning and I met up with them briefly before their walking tour.
We connected again for a romantic dinner at Rucula where we sat and chatted for hours. It was so nice to have them in town! For dessert, we met up with Garrett at Qucharitas to split some peculiar nitrogen ice cream flavors along with picarones which is a type of donut made with sweet potato, squash, and star anise. That makes it healthy right?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On Friday morning I actually had a lot of work to do, but I finally managed to make it out to a not so quick lunch with Irene. Later, a bunch of the tribers met up at the San Blas Market to start off our cooking class. Our chef gave us a tour, which was needed due to the sheer size of the market and the variety of its offerings.
Tumblr media
Once we got to the kitchen, we made maracuyá sours - cocktails with ice, pisco, passionfruit, eggwhites, and simple syryp. For the appetizer we assembled a Japanese-influenced ceviche and for the main course we made quinoa-encrusted oyster mushrooms/alpaca. With all the jokes back and forth, we never thought we would make it out of there to catch our bus to the Sacred Valley. We actually had to skip dessert!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The majority of the group rented a lavish house together in the Sacred Valley. In the morning, chefs made a nice breakfast spread before we got ready to get on our tour bus. Due to a series of miscommunications and unfortunate circumstances, the bus was an hour late so some of us took a stroll around the town of Urquillos. The town appeared to be run by stray dogs although there was soon to be a mayoral race which was split on the important issues - corn vs. cows.
Tumblr media
Our first adventure for the day was an ATV tour to Moray which is a terraced architectural Inca site. Along the way, we got a great view of the landscape and saw a variety of livestock. Next, we climbed to the top of the Ollantaytambo ruins which signifies the beginning of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The last stop of the trip was the Maras Salt Mines which are composed of over 5,000 pools and were established over 500 years ago. Back at the house, chefs cooked us dinner and we started heating the wood-fired hot tub. We spent the majority of the night in the tub, which we squeezed 10 of us into! The night ended with s'mores around the fire pit.
Tumblr media
Sunday was spent at Mountain Views Maras which is a glamping spot with, as expected, expansive mountain views, a nice restaurant, and alpacas, llamas, and horses. All afternoon, we fed the animals with corn husks and did photoshoots. It was so special being able to be in such close proximity to these big animals for a prolonged period of time.
Tumblr media
On our way back home we stopped at a textile place where they gave us a demo on how the yarn is made and dyed.

Wow! We have done so much since my last post.
We left Cusco a few days ago on our way to Machu Picchu. We took the easy option by train and bus, whilst the others on our tour spent 3 days hiking on the Inca and Quarry trail ( it's an age thing ) Anyway more of that later.
We left Cusco for a detour and overnight stay to the sacred valley. Only 4 of us,but well worth the trip. We sampled the Peruvian corn beer, but don't get excited it is only 1.5% Vol ( I think top deck shandy has more alcohol than that ). At the bar we also found the Guinea pig store, all still alive. you just ,have to do is choose one, and they do the rest. Don't worry we didn't do it. However we did drive through, The Guinea Pig mile, where every restaurant sells Guinea Pig. We stopped at one, but just to confirm, before I cause any more offence, it was just for a photo opportunity.
Next day we travelled to ollantaytambo, for another overnighter, a really nice little place, where I had 1, 2 too many proper peruvian beers. The following day we ran up a load of ancient Inca steps, just for fun and a few more photos opportunities, before boarding the Inca Rail to Machu Picchu. I think it must have been 1st class, as we had traditional singers and dancers to see us onto the train, and then a performance of a traditional folk song, it was like a show at disney world. ( I will post the video later, for those who aren't bored enough already ) We stayed overnight in Machu Picchu town, full of backpackers, restaurants and gift shops along with the obligatory, hundreds of requests to either eat in restaurants or buy souvenirs. At least they understand 'No thanks'.
Early start next day on the bus to Machu Picchu itself. Thankfully the weather held for us and we were able to take classic pictures of the ruins, but with us in them.Absolutely amazing, just gob smacked to be there, and Ann had the obligatory emotional moment, before we took literally hundreds of photos. luckily the battery in my camera and phone lasted. I promise not to post them all.
Today we booked a trip to Rainbow Mountain with 4 others from the tour. I think they were a but worried we might not make it to the top, as its a steep walk of 1.5 hours from the car park to reach the 5000m summit ( Apparently the same height as Everest base camp, however our next trip will not be to Nepal ) We prepared with altitude sickness medication and resisted the opportunity to hire horses up to the top, more in pity that one of the unlucky nags would have to carry me. Great achievement and great photos.
Back at the hotel in Cusco now recovering from our ordeal. I think we may have a sleep before dinner.
Off to the peruvian amazon tomorrow in search of the legendary Yakumama.
Next post after our amazon adventure.

Machu Picchu Adventure: The Journey Back to Cusco
Once we’d finished our tour, Cherry and I walked down the mountain back to Aguas Calientes town where her friend Florence was waiting. The downhill descent was very steep, and Cherry seemed to be having an easier time than me with my bad knee and lack of general fitness! Her and Florence are working as nurses near Manchester which I had kind of expected actually, she said they’d lived there for about 18 years but got funny looks on other tours when they said they’re from the UK so they just say Philippines. We took a couple of breaks when we started sweating a lot but were careful not to sit for too long and have our legs turn to jelly when standing back up. Cherry was really going for it but I was having trouble keeping up so by the end I was a tired mess but she was fine. Luckily there was a water vending machine for just one sol, however unluckily it shut off after pouring only about 150ml of the 500ml I’d ordered! Once we’d reunited Cherry with Florence, I told them I was heading off for some shopping and then went straight to Coffee Trotter for a flat white and phone recharge. It was so nice to sit down in the shade with a coffee and relax for about an hour. A sad street dog wandered in at one point to try his luck but was sprayed at and shooed back out. I walked around the Aguas Calientes market a bit and bought a few little souvenirs and then stamped my passport with the Machu Picchu stamp because I’m such a tourist. I figured that I should get some lunch so I stopped in at Infinity near the train station for a cheese empanada and lemonade which hit the spot nicely. When I got back to the train station I saw Leo and Giada sitting in there so I went over to say hi and they invited me for dinner with some French people they’d met a couple days earlier. The journey back was tiring and I could barely keep my eyes open. Once we finally arrived in Ollantaytambo, the Filipino ladies and I found our names on a sign with loads of other names including loads of Israelis and the South African family. Everyone else arrived except for the family so I tried to explain to the lady to look for parents with a small child and once we were waiting in the van they finally joined us and he was asleep in his mothers arms. It was a long drive back to Cusco with a crazy driver that didn’t stop at stop signs, overtook a police checkpoint, and almost rear ended some standstill traffic. The Israelis in the front asked to get out on a tight side street and the driver let them out thinking it was just the two but no of course there were another 5 or 6 in the back who got out too and left the door wide open so the driver had to get out and close it. Once I got back to the hostel I rearranged all my bags and then took advantage of the wifi to figure out what happened to my Revolut card. Of course, it was not enough to trap all my money on there but now it had a fraudulent transaction on it which meant I had to cancel the card and order a new one after using it for literally two transactions in Peru. I decided to get it sent to my hotel in La Paz and hopefully be there at the same time it would arrive. Although I was exhausted I went out for dinner as agreed with Leo and Giada and met their friends, a French couple named Ines and Jean-Baptiste. I’d waited almost 15 minutes for Leo and Giada to show up and was minutes away from bailing and going to McDonald’s but they showed up and we all went to Limo together in the central Plaza de Armas. It was a Japanese Peruvian fusion restaurant but we all went for the Thai style food - I chose the Arroz Thai with beef which was a delicious stir fry of vegetables, rice and beef. It was a more upscale restaurant for Peru but still didn’t cost too much once the bill arrived for my meal and a passionfruit mocktail, about 70 soles or $20.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Was eine Belohnung!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tag Nr. 5 bricht an…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media

HOW TO CLIMB MACHU PICCHU WITHOUT GETTING ALTITUDE SICKNESS
Tumblr media
Because of its altitude, Machu Picchu is not always an easy trek to complete. The area was built at an elevation of 8,000 feet above sea level, which means that you’ll need to make sure you’re acclimated to the altitude before you begin hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu and other surrounding destinations. If you’re planning on traveling to Machu Picchu, here are some tips on how to go about it so that you can get there with your health intact!
High Altitude Tips for Cusco
Because of the high altitude, you will have to take a few precautions before heading out. You’ll want to drink plenty of water in the days leading up to the excursion and during the hike. Avoid alcohol and caffeine. It may be tempting to have a glass of wine or a morning cup of coffee, but both beverages can lead to dehydration. Think twice before hanging out late the night before. Being well rested will give you the much needed boost of energy. Eat light meals and avoid overeating. Keep your head up as you walk around, but don't overexert yourself or climb too many stairs at once (rest frequently).
The Best Places Near Machu Picchu
Cusco is the best place to start your journey. Not only is it the gateway to Machu Picchu, but it's also full of Incan history and culture. Plus, at 3,400 meters above sea level, it's a good acclimatization point. Arequipa is another great option. It's about 2,000 meters lower than Cusco, so you'll have an easier time adjusting. With its rich colonial past, this city has plenty of restaurants, bars, hotels and museums for those looking for more adventure. For travelers with less time in Peru or those who are sensitive to altitude sickness, choose one of these three cities as a stopping point before or after Machu Picchu: Huaraz (about 4 hours from Cusco), Puno (about 9 hours from Cusco) or Lima (about 10 hours from Cusco).
Inca Trail - Things To Know
If you're planning on doing the Inca Trail, there are a few things you should know before setting off. Firstly, the trail is at a high altitude, so it's important to be prepared for that. Secondly, the trail can be quite challenging, so make sure you're physically fit enough to take it on. Thirdly, the weather can be unpredictable, so pack accordingly. Fourthly, there are plenty of amazing sights to see along the way, so make sure you take your time to enjoy them.  Finally, this is not an easy hike and you should not attempt it if you have any type of medical condition or are under 16 years old.
Going from Machu Picchu Back Down
It is important to remember that when you are descending from Machu Picchu, you are still at a high altitude. Give yourself time to adjust by spending a day or two in Cusco before heading back down the mountain. Drink plenty of fluids and avoid alcohol while you are acclimatizing. Take it easy on your first day back down and listen to your body. If you feel ill, stop and rest immediately.
Don't worry - not all people get altitude sickness and even if they do, it usually only lasts one day or less! Seeing this area of Peru is an unforgettable experience. Charge your phones and have plenty of memory on your camera because you’ll want to take plenty of pictures and videos.

Cusco

Day 14 - Cusco Free Day
Tumblr media
This was our free day to explore Cusco, however there were scheduled events in the morning and evening.
We started the day at a chocolate museum, where we were taught how to shell and grind cocoa beans. We made a cocoa tea, a bitter spiced Mayan hot chocolate, and a creamier hot chocolate invented by the conquistadors.
Tumblr media
Alyssa and I are officially award winning chocolatiers, as we won a dark chocolate Sole coin for having the best texture to our finely crushed cocoa beans.
Tumblr media
Our class consisted of our group, a couple from Pennsylvania, and a newlywed couple from Peru and Finland who are living in London.
At the end of the class we got to create our own chocolates using special toppings.
Tumblr media
I made some with Peruvian salt, some with peanuts, and some with quinoa. I also added sprinkles to half of them, for color.

After the class was over we explored the museum and factory upstairs as well as the art shop next door.
Tumblr media

Haley decided that she was going to get this sweater, for herself.
Tumblr media
We picked up our chocolates when they were ready and split up opposite directions, with Haley, Bernadette, and Alyssa going souvenir shopping while Austyn Claire and I went to the Inca museum. There were lots of artifacts from the various pre-Inca civilizations that I had researched for my presentation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While admiring turquoise sculptures, I chatted with a guy from Johannesburg that had arrived in South America at the same time as us but had already visited Brazil, Colombia, Uruguay, Argentina, and Chile!
Tumblr media
There were miniature models of farming practices as well as archeological sites like Machu Picchu.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The museum also contained textiles and continued into the colonial period.
Tumblr media
My favorite exhibit was one of pre-colonial musical instruments. Some of them were filled with water and used the shape of the internal chambers and the water sloshing around creating air pressure which was translated to various complex animal noises! I’ve never seen anything like it.
Tumblr media
Kinda museumed out, we headed back to the hotel to set things down. We headed back out into the city shortly to find lunch. We explored a bunch of little shops and stopped to read lots of restaurant menus before finding one we were satisfied with, Jamas. We were seated on the top floor, which had 5’8” ceilings. The floor wasn’t flat, so this height changed depending on where you were standing.
Tumblr media
I had a salchipapa the other day, and had thought the concept was pretty good but was lacking in its execution. I got a "Salchipapa A la Pobre" which added fried banana and egg to the salchipapa base of potatoes and sliced sausage. Apparently “A la Pobre” just adds fried banana and egg to something. Imagine all the tasty food combinations we could have if we could just added that to a dish in the states!
Tumblr media
We wrote in our journals and enjoyed our food before heading back to the hotel. I joined with Bernadette, Haley and Alyssa as the were headed out about the same time. We stopped by a few grocery stores and I got money out at an ATM. I even picked up more Chomp, both the orange and chocolate flavors.
Tumblr media
Bernadette wasn’t feeling well, so she and Alyssa headed back to the hotel while Haley and I poked around in shops and slowly made our way in the same direction.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We all headed out from the hotel across town to head to the planetarium. We met beside a fountain in the square with the chocolate museum.
Tumblr media
The planetarium employees picked us up and brought us all in a van into the hills around Cusco in multiple loads. It was cloudy, so we could only see the moon and the brightest of the stars through the telescopes. We went inside and watched a constellation talk on their dome and a PowerPoint about how the Inca did astronomy. I’d tell you more, but as soon as the lights went out in that dome, I fell asleep.
Tumblr media
We moved to another room and had one more PowerPoint about Peru geography before the night was over. We played with a globe and tried to guesstimate its age based on political boundaries. It still had two Germanys!
Tumblr media
We rode the bus back to the central square where we regrouped and walked to a restaurant. I wasn’t feeling great, so I ordered a chicken soup, which was pretty good, but not nearly as exciting as the alpaca burgers others got! The live musicians played Andean covers of Chiquitita and Hallelujah, as well as a repetitive and unfortunately catchy song called Pachamama, found here on YouTube.
Tumblr media
Afterwards, Austyn and Claire went back to the hotel while the rest of us went to a salsa dancing class. I danced with Alyssa and we pretty quickly got the hang of it!
Tumblr media
However, after about a half hour of being hit on by Peruvian men, everyone else was ready to go. We all walked back to the hotel and collapsed for the night.

Cusco Tips and Art History
A trip to Cusco is so chaotic. You must fly in (or bus 20 hours) from Lima, landing in Cusco. But from Cusco you have to take a 4-5 hour drive to the town of Ollantaytambo. Ollantaytambo has some beautiful Inca ruins - some you can pay for, and some you can freely wander and hike around. In fact, the houses and restaurants in this small town are built upon ancient inca ruins. You can see where the Inca rocks end and the more modern Peruvian walls begin. They also still use the canal and aqueduct system that the inca built. If you do the Inca Trail hike to Machu Picchu, this is where you’d begin. It was a lovely place to spend the night, because afterwards, you need to take a 2 hour $80 train ride to “Machu Picchu Town” also known as Aguascalientes. Aguascalientes is the squished, pricy, seedy, tourist town of your nightmares! It’s just the basecamp for Machu Picchu.  From here - you are finally just a thirty minute bus ride away from Machu Picchu! Trust me, the travel is exhausting.
Tumblr media
Ollantaytambo Încă ruins
With my parents we took advantage to do the Wayna Picchu (big mountain) hike. First you enter the citadel doing a tour of 1 of the 4 routes. Then you sign off your name and your life in a tracking notebook, and begin your hike in the highland jungle. This was a hike with many downhills and uphills, areas where you had to grab onto ropes or poles to keep your balance. We weren’t sure if we’d make it all the way up, but in the end we did! 10 minutes after sitting nearly at the top, a park ranger came by guiding the last people off the mountain. We quickly scrambled up the last 10 minutes to take more pictures. Then the park ranger followed us all the way down the mountain. This gave me anxiety but we were proud to be the last ones on Wayna Picchu that day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
From this view, Machu Picchu is supposed to appear to be the shape of a condor.
Tumblr media
We made it down!
Of course, we weren’t going to leave town without doing the most famous Machu Picchu route, and getting our llama picture. So the next day we did the Llaqta Machu Picchu route in the citadel. It started to rain, and when we got to the best picture point, the clouds covered the entire view of the citadel. Alas, a benevolent wind brushed away the clouds and we were able to get some rainy pictures in our pink and green ponchos. The guide told us about how carbon-dating the rocks showed the Incas ate a diet of corn, chicha, potatoes, yams, avocado, beans, coca leaves and other fruits, grains, vegetables, and nuts. The Incas maintained an essentially vegan diet, punctualized by a fried guinea pig or duck meat on special occasions. Machu Picchu has extensive planting terraces complete with irrigation and drainage systems.  Now llamas, wild chinchillas, and spectacled bears enjoy the landscape.  There are also Andean pumas, condors, and snakes, known as the Inca Trilogy. It was said that the snake guarded the underworld, the condor the spirit world, and the puma the earthly world. Machu Picchu was beautiful, and it was worth all the hassle! But they really make you work for it.
Tumblr media
After that we went back to the city of Cusco. We toured a Catholic convent that was built on top of Inca ruins with no second thoughts. Today it is just a tourist attraction. We observed some lively Cusqueño dances. I tried to convince my parents to go see more ruins, but they were all ruined-out, and even museumed-out! I never thought I’d see the day I’d be forcing my parents to go to a museum.  Even more remarkably, I had to convince them to go to mass.  The Cusco Cathedral charges like 50 soles per person to tour it, but if you go to 7,8, or 10 am mass, you can enter for free. My dad takes after my sleeping-in tendencies, so 10 am is early for us. I rushed my parents through their breakfast (there were some delicious olives and we ate like 40).
The Cathedral was large and beautiful, with a huge old wooden organ in the center, and dozens of paintings from the famous Cusco School of Art. This art school was a movement of guilds, artists, and workshops, in which Spaniards and other European artists trained indigenous artists in order to help Peruvians convert to Catholicism. The art school/movement started from the Spanish conquest in the 1530s and lasted through the 1800s. Many of these trained artists maintained their Inca heritage, so they took these European painting styles and religious subjects and changed them to better fit their beliefs. They painted God and the saints in a  triangular form with rivers running around their ankles and golden crowns with rays of sun on their heads. This is because the Incas worshipped mountains, rivers, and the sun, believing these to be their gods. The triangle shape of the Catholic subjects suggested a mountain, and embedded gold paint or gold threads were a representation of the sun. (Even priestcloths were often woven with gold or silver threads). We saw many of these features within the Cathedral, including the very famous Peruvian last supper painting, which includes Peruvian foods like stuffed red spicy peppers, corn, chicha, and a special main course. While one man tried to flush us out of the Cathedral after mass, another man very graciously pointed us to the Peruvian Last Supper, painted by Marcos Zapata in 1753- a highlight of my trip.
Tumblr media
Do you see the special main dish? it’s a guinea pig
Tragically, most of the indigenous painters in the School of Art were forbidden from signing their own paintings, and most of the art from this period is unidentifiable. And like many other buildings in Cusco, the Cathedral was built directly on top of an Inca buildings - a palace known as Kiswarkancha.
Tumblr media
Since we were tired of everything, we wined and dined around Cusco, and enjoyed the ever-changing weather. Sunny, warm, rainy, windy, cold. Cusco also has some of the best deals for souvenirs - do your shopping nearby the famous 12-angled stone for the best prices.

Day 20 - Machu Picchu & Huayna Picchu
The alarm goes off, we snap into action - shower and get ready. The hotel breakfast starts at 4:30am - they know their customers well haha.
We grab some eggs on toast and coffee to keep us going for a few hours of hiking. Our hotel store our bags after we check out. Today we climb Huayna Picchu. It’s not particularly long hike but it’s a huge elevation gain over a short distance. I’m a little worried about the climb as I’m scared of heights but we’ll see how it goes.
We take the bus up to the site and as I had feared it’s quite misty this early in the morning. However it’s kinda nice and mysterious with the clouds.
Firstly we are on Circuit 4 today so we can enter the Inka House that we looked down on yesterday.
Tumblr media
Then we meander our way towards the Sacred Rock which is the start of the trek up Huayna Picchu. We are allowed to start a little earlier than our scheduled 7:00am start time so after signing in we begin the climb. It’s almost immediately lots of stairs but nothing too crazy. The first 3/4 of the hike we are surrounded by bush and enjoying the flowers. At some steep staircases they have metal chains to help you get up.
Tumblr media
After this we get to the terraces where it’s cleared and you are able to better see how high up you are. Quickly followed by the “Stairs of Death”. We did need to climb up on our hands and knees but I think they are a little overhyped. Once we get up the stairs we get amazing views down into the valley so we stop for some photos.
Tumblr media
It’s still cloudy so we stop to once side for half an hour and eat some snacks. My only struggle is when Jack stands really close to a sheer cliff edge whilst taking photos and it makes me feel a bit queezy!
Tumblr media
After this, the clouds start to clear and we head up a short staircase to another terrace where there is spectacular views down over Machu Picchu. We stop again for a while to enjoy.
Tumblr media
It’s the last little climb to the very summit, the space at the top is very limited so we don’t stay too long - just enough to snap some photos.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s all downhill from here!! The downhill is a little harder as my knee is playing up, but we take it slow. There are so many people climbing by this point (10am) and we keep needing to stop to let them last. Also they are all struggling in the heat so I’m super happy we chose the early slot.
WE MADE IT - I’m so proud of myself. The heights were barely a problem for me at all.
We make our way towards the exit and we stop off at the Temple of the Condor. The Condor (part of three of the Trilogy of the Andes world). The rock has been carved into the shape of a condor.
Tumblr media
Ok it’s time to head back down to Aguas Calientes. I’ve been geeking out on Incan stuff for days now so it’s time for Jack to get to do something fun. We head straight for a message next to our hotel. We opt for the Incan massage with hot stones. It’s an hour of pure bliss - one of the best massages we’ve both had. Next we grab some lunch at a nearby restaurant. We both order the beef burritos (plus a pisco sour to celebrate) which look very much like tacos but they do the job.
Tumblr media
By the time we pick up our bags it’s time to walk to the train station. This time it’s even more chaotic than yesterday, after a while with utter confusion we realise that the previous train is late to depart so the small station is packed with two trains worth of people. The staff don’t seem to know what is going on and keep telling us different things - the usual South American stuff.
We end up leaving about 40mins late which isn’t too bad but the train goes really slowly the whole way back to Ollantaytambo. We have a taxi prearranged to take us back to Cusco which then gets stuck in heaps of traffic so it’s quite late by the time we get in. Not ideal after our 4am wake up. We head straight out to grab some hot chips for dinner and some more water. The new hostel is pretty bad - black mould everywhere, it smells badly of drains, the walls are paper thin and a dog is barking all night!
One final thought before I sign off - I’ve realised upon returning to Cusco is that the altitude really messes with everything - for example Jack’s moisturiser exploded on him and it reminded me that the same thing happened to me with sunscreen when we first arrived here. The altitude pushed all of his snot out as soon as we arrived back (sorry TMI). Also we’ve noticed that the beer has way too much head and is a bit flat tasting. When the car was stuck in traffic earlier I started feeling sick - it’s difficult to differentiate between side effects from the tablets and actual altitude sickness but I think the summary is that my body just feels a bit fragile at 3400m but glad we took the tablets because everything we’ve experienced has been very very mild.
