Restless Rewatch: The Untamed Episode 05 (first part)
(Masterpost) (previous episode) (this episode, second part)
Warning: Spoilers for all 50 episodes of the Untamed
Tumblr media
The Pride of Yunmeng
Waterfall Date
Lan Wangji gets to experience the two extremes of Wei Wuxian’s interpersonal skills within the span of a few seconds. This is even better than his rooftop date with this horrible annoying terribly, terribly attractive boy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lan Wangji has come here on a mission to make Wei Wuxian do his homework, which is why he immediately tells him “let’s go to the library” gazes at him silently for several seconds...
Tumblr media
...and then lets him adjust his sleeve for him and step allll the way into his personal space.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately Wei Wuxian is about to guess a Lan Clan secret, so Lan Wangji ends the conversation by saying “let’s go to the library” grabbing him by his sexy arm muscle and dragging him off. Did he hold his arm all the way to the library? Even if he didn’t, his “I don’t touch other people” later at the lake is clearly horseshit. I don’t touch other people unless they are named Wei Wuxian and our brothers aren’t watching.
(more after the cut!)
Apology in the Library
Wei Wuxian splits his library time between actually doing his homework and trying to make friends with Lan Wangji. And he tries really, really hard, starting by sincerely complimenting LWJ’s calligraphy and offering a pretty okay apology for his prior rooftop antics. Lan Wangji tells him to put his leg down but doesn’t tell him to go sit at his own desk.
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji exhibits steely self-control as he resists this look, which would cause anyone else’s robes to spontaneously un-weave themselves into a pile of threads.
When Lan Wangji won’t look at him because he feels his apology was not sincere, Wei Wuxian becomes much more formally apologetic. First he says “sorry” two more times, and he starts prepping Lan Wangji’s ink.  This involves grinding an ink stick against an ink stone with water, to make a pool of ink for the calligrapher to dip their brush into.
Tumblr media
This is not Wei Wuxian being annoying and messing with stuff on Lan Wangji’s desk, a la Zhou Yunlan (Guardian). This is an act of service; a genuinely helpful thing to do if you know how to do it properly --which all of these young scholars definitely do--and an action that casts Wei Wuxian in the role of a servant or junior.
Tumblr media
Then Wei Wuxian offers to kneel down (to offer a major formal apology), while giggling like an adorable dumbass. It's unclear if this is sexual innuendo, just being ridiculously unconcerned about dignity, being slightly into abasing himself for this beautiful person, or all of the above.
After taking a long moment to consider all this, Lan Wangji slowly and deliberately gives Wei Wuxian three seconds of the eye contact he’s been begging for.
Tumblr media
Then Lan Wangji spoils the moment by dropping a silence spell on him.
Wen Can I Have Some Fun?
The Wen siblings hang out and talk about their secret villainy and then fret about how much it sucks to have a chronic health condition, which is pretty relatable TBH.
Tumblr media
I know life seems boring now but just wait until you’re an itinerant zombie with nails in your head.
Wen Qing is a devoted older sister just like Jiang Yanli, although with less fainting and more scheming.
Tumblr media
Good kitty.
Porno in the Library
Now, since this next scene ends with Wei Wuxian being a boundary-crossing jerk, let's start by remembering that Lan Wangji has magically gagged Wei Wuxian against his will three times now, as well as hiding his vulnerable family member behind a ward while lying in wait in order to attack him. So, you know. Teenagers in lust. They are both learning what is and isn't okay.
Lan Wangji steals a long glance at Wei Wuxian while Wei Wuxian is drawing.
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian is putting the finishing touches on a gift for Lan Wangji. The gift is a portrait of Lan Wangji with flowers in his hair. This boy is SMITTEN. I think he knows it, too; he just doesn’t think it’s a big deal yet.
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian, who is good at everything, is really fucking good at drawing.
Tumblr media
When Wei Wuxian presents the drawing to Lan Wangji he says “this is my gift for you.”  This is very good-mannered of Wei Wuxian; Lan Wangji had to supervise him for three days, so he is presenting him with a gift to thank him and say farewell.
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji completely ignores him, which is really breathtaking, next-level rudeness.
Wei Wuxian isn’t bothered by this, however, and just embellishes the picture with an extra flower or something before offering it again. This time Lan Wangji takes in and is very very very pleased with it, as evidenced by his slightly widening his eyes and how carefully he places the drawing on the far side of his desk.
Tumblr media
Also he gives Wei Wuxian some prolonged eye contact, and engages in what, for him, is playful banter, calling the gift “extremely boring” when Wei Wuxian prompts him to use more words than usual.
Then Wei Wuxian spoils the moment by pranking him.
Now - let’s look at this erotic-book situation. This is a boundary-crossing prank, yes, but it’s also an invitation to engage in some form of intimacy. For teens who have access to erotic images, looking at them together can be simple naughty fun. Or it can be a way of discovering and bonding over shared sexual identities and interest. Or it can prompt more direct engagement, up to and including having sex with each other.
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji’s horrified reaction means that Wei Wuxian has to characterize this as a prank after the fact, but he might very well have intended it as an invitation to get horny together.
Either way, his response to Lan Wangji’s “shameless” comment is bound to make an impression.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian is from the clan of "be free" and he just doesn't see why this is a big deal. And now he’s told Lan Wangji it doesn’t have to be a big deal. And through him, the producers are breaking the fourth wall and telling every viewer that this doesn’t have to be a big deal and that they shouldn’t feel ashamed.
Tumblr media
Threats and rudeness and book destruction ensue, and Lan Wangji is left alone in all kinds of emotional disarray, with a bunch of torn up erotica to tape back together throw away.
Boys on the Rocks
Wei Wuxian brags about his prank to Jiang Cheng and bestie Nie Huaisang, telling them that he got Lan Wangji to cuss at him. He’s going to put a notch on his sword handle for this achievement.
Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng is pissed at Wei Wuxian about this, like he’s pissed at him about everything all the time. Possibly he has already started the seedlings of his lifelong jealousy of Lan Wangji.
Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng doesn’t realize that he’s essentially prepared Wei Wuxian to court Lan Wangji by constantly criticizing, hitting, and threatening him. After a decade of Jiang Cheng’s rough style of brotherhood, Lan Wangji’s elegant and refined hostility rolls off of Wei Wuxian like water off a duck’s back.
Tumblr media
Nie Huaisang wants to make sure Wei Wuxian didn't rat him out, but isn't worried about the destroyed book because he has a whole external drive full of porn.
Several Brain Cells Trio
These guys do make some questionable choices together, but actually they are all really bright and effective in complimentary ways.
Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng is growing into a strong future leader - authoritarian and dickish, yes, but also decisive and unflinching. Wei Wuxian is observant of things around him, always ready for combat, and thinks deeply and strategically about events.  Nie Huaisang is a bottomless font of knowledge, sourced from books and from his own observations.
Tumblr media
So when the Wen spy bird shows up, they spot it, drive it away, identify what it is, and understand that it’s a threat and that its presence has political implications.
Tumblr media
They are all goofballs at times, but highly gifted ones.
Doo Doo Doo Lookin Out My Back Ward
Lan Xichen asks Lan Wangji if he’s found out who was sneaking around his the back ward and Lan Wangji hesitates before reluctantly saying “Wei Ying.”
Ok seriously - nobody calls him Wei Ying. Nobody refers to him in the third person as as Wei Ying. Calling him Wei Gongzi or Wei Wuxian would be totally normal. His own brother calls him Wei Wuxian. And Lan Wangji has only called him Wei Ying to his face when he was angry.
But now--immediately after the erotica debacle in the library--he is Wei Ying when Lan Wangji is speaking of him privately with his brother.
Tumblr media
By the way, Lan Wangji's shoulders seem super wide in these robes, don't they? I'm not complaining.
Forgettable Disciple #1
Now we meet apparent nobody Su She, who sucks. He wants to take care of the water ghosts himself.
Tumblr media
He is a no-headband disciple which is like - none of the juniors in the later timeframe go without a headband. The guys who got set on fire at the gate had headbands. One of the Lan Rules is “wear a headband.” Is there anyone else who doesn't rate a headband? This is a plot point later when it comes to the ice cave but for now it just seems that he's that one perpetual intern who never gets promoted and never learned embroidery.
Doctor Qing, Medicine Woman
[OP laughed way too hard at her own joke just now.] Wen Qing is helping Jiang Yanli, and Jiang Cheng is super happy to see her. When did he develop this crush? Because it's already in full swing.
Tumblr media
Did Wei Wuxian just sneer when he noticed Jiang Cheng’s crush? Like macking on Lan Wangji is more appropriate than this?
Tumblr media
I love you and I’m going to advocate killing everyone who matters to you
Tumblr media
I’m a nosy jerk and I’m going to be your best friend for life, quite literally
Wei Wuxian complains about Wen Qing ignoring him and she gives him the prettiest, loveliest *sigh* death glare ever.
Tumblr media
However when she sees that he's a little brother whose sister utterly dotes on him, she starts thinking maybe he's all right.
Tumblr media
For the Yanli-Qing shippers, there is a tiny breadcrumb here, where Yanli says they met by the river bank.  I don't personally ship my personal girlfriend Wen Qing with Jiang Yanli, but I support your ships wherever they may sail.
Continued in Part 2, right here

I'm randomly curious, has runaan always been ur fav? What did u think when u first saw him? 👀👀
I had like ten paragraphs saved in a draft here because Runaan is an amazing, complex character and I will talk your ear off about him if you let me. But the short answer is yes. Uhhh and it looks like I’m gonna go ahead with a long answer, too. #sorrynotsorry
Runaan and Aaravos both caught my eye early on, because they’re visually my type. Aaravos is pretty and clever, but I would boot him into Garlath’s Furnace of Souls for one corn chip.
Runaan, on the other hand, has a husband, a stressful job, friends, a kid, and a crapton of angst and regret. That’s a real, relatable existence for me. He’s a mortal dude with a life he’s just trying to live the best he can. Even at the start, when it was just him and Rayla and a stressful mission, I saw that credits sketch of them and it really hit home with me. My oldest is Rayla’s age. Even before we knew Ethari, I really enjoyed and related to that parental-figure vibe from Runaan.
My autistic processing had its hands full when I first started watching this show back in February of 2019. I was taking in the 3D animation (ghghgh stylized reality), brand new characters (who are all these people omg), the camera panning thing (amazing but distracting), the gorgeous backgrounds (holy heck so pretty I kept staring and missing dialogue), the music (some themes popped for me and I totally missed others, music is weird for me), the accents (Rayla was worth adjusting to), the map (where the heck is everything pls I need spatial references which way is north), how pretty all the character models were (who designed these I bet they had fun with all these details), the plot lines I tried to piece together (half my theory posts come from frustration, lol), the character relationships (I start from allies/enemies and differentiate slowly), and so much more, all at the same time. Haha, I remember not really understanding that Callum and Ezran were half-brothers until the third time I watched S1--I thought they were full brothers at first, which, as you may imagine, confused the plot line for me quite a bit re: Rayla’s mission.
I swear I’m not dumb, I was just thinking about everything at the same time. I have a very slow startup on brand new things, because it’s always like this. If you know the Lionsgate film company’s animated logo--the one with a ton of big metal gears behind the doors--that’s me. Crankity crank behind the scenes. But once the momentum is there, baby, the inertia is real.
My very first impressions of Runaan were very surface-level. He was pretty, dramatic, and badass. All very lovely things. But I remember the moment I genuinely went Oh over him: it was when his voice dropped an octave in the middle of “We take it, but we do not take it lightly.” I was all, Ohhh, he’s that kind of dramatic. Nice.
It was all the more impressive because I have the odd auditory processing struggle, but that whole speech, and that one line, hit me like a Mack truck. I’m a huge sucker for dramatic speeches. The Eleventh Doctor at Stonehenge, anyone? Yass. I guess it also helps when they’re delivered in fine Shakespearean form with a British accent. Can you tell I was an English Lit major? Yeah, I have types there too.
Anyway. Runaan’s always come across like a dramatic, earnest-but-imperfect, badass grownup. The more I rewatched the show, the more good and bad relatable things I found in his character, too. His future plot may take him in a direction that I won’t enjoy--I read Aaravos wrong before S3 dropped, so I might be reading things wrong about Runaan too, in light of future seasons--but I will always have these years when I thought he was amazing, and he was my favorite character in all the land.

AoS rewatch
At the very tail end of s4:
I wasn't going to liveblog this episode but ...
Ok I forgot the return of Robbie ends with him doing a Doctor Strange portal!
And the foreshadowing with Coulson knowing he's dying. :( I'm glad they brought Robbie back for that and think there's room for a miniseries or movie about him.
Daisy's closure in forgiving Fitz! That's a leader speech right there. And fitting after everything he has done to support her after she got her powers.
And a fitting and poetic end for Radcliffe.
THE DINER AHHHHH I always forget that they are expecting to be arrested because they are "paying the price together" for the Daisybot shooting Talbot etc. etc.
-------------
On to s5!
Best cold open for a season!
Oh no, not a tall rock! These monoliths are to AoS as infinity stones are to the MCU. How does Virgil even recognize Coulson?
"first of all, I'm not inspector gadget" ok but you totally are haha
"This isn't new for me, I've been hurled through space by a monolith before"
"SHIELD doesn't have a space division called SPEAR or something??" Wonder if this is the origin of SWORD?
Mack whines now but at least he's not MAY my god this woman is a superhero and anyone who says otherwise can fight me and by me I mean her. That was pretty cruel to have her arrive AROUnd a PIpE?!
Daisy right on time!!
oh yay Deke who we won't be rid of until the end. Three more seasons of Deke *insert birthday Ezma gif
I admit he was better in this one where he was the one who knew what's up, all his tech. It's the goofy doofy puppy that grates on me later
It seems like it would be fairly easy to just spit out a cloth in your mouth
Yoyo is smart to suggest it's a simulation considering their last DAY or two in their timeline. For us, it was a year when it aired, but for them it was like, hours! I do love the group reaction of OH GOD NO don't even GO there. haha "My brain will explode" haha
"This has to be the coolest we've ever looked" they say creeping through the space station very much looking like they are scared teens in a horror movie.
Simmons is definitely the brain of this operation. She's always solving the puzzle.
They aren't here for a good time, they're here for a Kree time :(
The writers do a good job of limiting everyone in their powers: immediately debilitating May, Coulson has his civvy hand he was planning on getting arrested with, Yoyo snaps back to where she started if she runs with her powers, Daisy's denied access to the computer systems because it doesn't recognize her as Kree enough, Jemma doesn't have any lab or tools but her mind.
"We just wanted pie" awww
Daisy making calls and even giving Coulson the plan and coming to the rescue!
Good thing most flying things are designed similarly enough that May can fly anything.
The foreshadowing on Yoyo and her arms :(((
No reason to send a message to Earth; it's been blown up a loooong time.
"Well, I'm a biologist, but I can invent time travel, sure, just give me a minute." hahaha
"They do whatever they want, it's like herding rats" haha TRUE
"who would put a shark inside a tornado?" "they wouldn't, it's just a movie" haha
Deke, she just said goodbye to a crush with a devil inside giving him powers and before that her superpowered boyfriend died for her and to save the world, so the bar is higher than you can reach, buddy.
Gold stars for Daisy, not only tracking him and recognizing a virtual opium den when she sees one but also immediately knowing it's the Framework.
SO intense when he explains to her that she's the one who quaked the planet, not the Kree.
Jemma is so interesting because she can be put in these scenarios on the inside of enemy territory because she had no powers to just attack them but has to be clever to save herself, and they simultaneously see her value in keeping her close and consistently underestimate her.

LGBT Representation in Jamie Johnson as Compared to Other Kids’ Media
Pinned to the top of my blog because I’m quite proud of this post, and I still want newer followers to be able to see it.
From what I know, LGBT representation is relatively new in media. Not just kids’ media, but media in general. I don’t even think I knew what gay meant until I was like 11. And I didn’t know that religions didn’t exactly have the greatest opinion of gay people till my GCSEs. In that sense, I was lucky. I knew I was gay before I knew what homophobia was, so I have always been comfortable with who I am. But others didn’t have life that... Well, simple I suppose. I’ve always known who I am, but other people, well, in the worst case scenario, gay people can become homophobic themselves and grow to hate themselves. This might seem like a sidetracky introduction, but I think it shows the importance of LGBT in media. For someone like me, it can help to start to normalise gay people to my family. Even though they’re still homophobic, at least they’re able to watch programmes with LGBT characters in. I met someone who’s dad wouldn’t watch any shows with LGBT characters in it. And for how rare gay people used to be in media in general, they’re even rarer in kids’ media. Why is it that Disney Channel only had their first gay main character in 2017 when homosexuality was legalised in... 2003 in the US. Wow, I can’t lie, I looked up that statistic expecting it to be way earlier. OK, but it was legalised in 1967 in the UK. So why did I never see any gay characters in my childhood? I’ve known I was gay since I was 9, but I must have first seen a gay character in, OK, it was Doctor Who. Captain Jack was pansexual. So I did have some LGBT representation. But there wasn’t much. And again, not in kids’ media. So, let’s look at some of the kids’ media that changed the landscape for LGBT rep in kids’ media. Sarah Jane Adventures and Wizards vs Aliens We’ll start with what I think is probably the worst types of LGBT representation. First of all: Wizards vs Aliens. Benny came out. But I can’t remember the show ever talking about it again after he came out. Sarah Jane Adventures. Yes, it’s not Russell T Davies’ fault that he never got the chance to let Luke come out in the show, and yes, he got to have Luke come out in the memorial episode for Sarah Jane on YouTube, but even before Liz had... Luke had left the main cast, so his coming out would have still meant less to audience members. Gravity Falls had a coming out at the very end of the show, and I believe so did Adventure Time, so they fit in this category too. Compare that to Dillon from Jamie Johnson. Yes, there’s a reasonable chance we won’t see him again after this season, but if it is, he gets to leave on a high. We get to explore his coming out journey. Steven Universe Steven Universe is great for LGBT representation, and it’s great for normalising LGBT representation. You’ve got a huge variety of LGBT characters, because the Gems are all gay (Except Rose). So you can understand that there are different types of gay people (Love Victor did that too, but I’m not sure how many people would watch it). Steven universe is definitely the gayest kids’ show. High School Musical the Musical the Series fits in this category too. Carlos is out and proud. And we don’t see his coming out, more his love life. Again, great rep. Normalises gay people. Jamie Johnson is nowhere near the level of gay that Steven Universe or High School Musical the Musical the Series is, but I think that it’s less meaningful than other shows I’ll mention and Jamie Johnson. It’s the same reason Victor said “Screw you” to Simon at the beginning of Love Victor. We don’t want to see gay people who have it easy. We want to see gay people who are like us. Who have been through stuff and have come out the other side alive. We want hope, but that doesn’t come from seeing gay people who have it easy. I see people playing football and risking corona and I’m jealous. I want to play football again. I see gay people have it easy: Same. I wish I could have it that easy, and it makes me sad. Steven Universe is a great show, and has great rep, but I think even kids’ media should have something closer to home. Andi Mack and Diary of a Future President I love how they portrayed Cyrus and Bobby. We got to see Cyrus’ story from realising he liked guys to being able to say “I’m gay” to showing his crush he likes him (though homophobes can pretend the bench scene was just a friendship scene). Cyrus’ arc was great, and the bench scene was perfect and the only problem with it was that it deserved a fourth season so we could see Cyrus and TJ in a relationship. Diary of a Future President though. I was heartbroken when Bobby didn’t come out to Liam. But then I found out there was a season 2 and I was OK, because it’s hard to come out. It’s as if all the shows make it so easy to come out to the first person, but it’s not. The first real life person I came out to, I came out at 22. And they had come out to me first. And I had to write it down on my phone. I couldn’t say it out loud. So yeah, seeing Diary of a Future President take it slow is amazing, and I love it, and it’s also what they did with Dillon. Some people think that they only really intended for Dillon to be gay from season 4. But, I think that they’ve known since the beginning. I plan to do a character analysis on Dillon after my rewatch, but I think I found something that shows they must have known since at least season 2. (I expect the analysis will be a lot shorter than this. Sorry for the crazy length. And if it’s a crap read. I don’t essay well). But if they knew from the beginning, that was a brilliant move on their part. The only thing that makes me unsure is how Dillon took 3 years to realise he might be gay, but it’s possible that he denied it to himself until he realised Elliot was gay. Because there’s no way he wasn’t thinking he was gay in season 4 episode 5. He didn’t think he was asexual, his reaction to Ruby’s foster mums suggested that he was interested because they were gay. But regardless, I love that they took it slow. Not everyone can come out as easily as others, and having someone like Bobby, or like Dillon, is so much more meaningful than Cyrus, even though Cyrus is an amazing character. Bobby and Dillon are more relatable because they’re finding it tough to come out. The Dumping Ground I kept trying to decide whether I thought the dumping ground or Andi Mack/Diary of a Future President had better LGBT representation. In the end, I decided that I preferred the Dumping Ground’s representation. Yes, in Andi Mack and Diary of a Future President, we get to see the coming out journey of Bobby and Cyrus, but even though Andi Mack touched on homophobia, a lot of people didn’t even realise Kira was blackmailing TJ, making him afraid of how people would react if they found out he was gay. A number of people just thought TJ was being an idiot. But the Dumping Ground had a gay couple wanting to foster Gus. And IIRC, Johnny thought it was wrong because they were gay. Something like that would foster (see what I did there?) potential discussion between parents and children about gay adoption. Some kids watching the show might have been gay and if they watched it with their parents, they could talk about it with them. Gage their reaction. Maybe even come out to them. The Dumping Ground’s episode was great. And then May-Li came out. And we never got to see her full journey, But we did get to see her journey to being accepted by her grandmother I think. And that’s something. And Now On To Jamie Johnson Just like the Dumping Ground, Jamie Johnson has been able to tackle serious issues. I mean, season 1 dealt with Jamie’s cheating father. You’ve got Zoe being a carer, Dillon getting diabetes. But in terms of LGBT representation, it’s season 4 and season 5. Season 4 episode 5 was incredible. I remember telling all my friends about it, and how amazing it was that CBBC were doing this. To recap: Ruby said her heroes were her foster parents, causing Dillon to ask Ruby about it. She thought he was being an idiot, even though in actual fact, he was excited that someone else was gay and trying not to show it. Dillon told his dad that Ruby had foster mums while he was telling him how Ruby’s biological parents weren’t in her life anymore. Liam, Dillon’s brother, used it to rile up Ruby’s sister Alba until she attacked him. She probably would have gotten expelled from the club, but Sienna filmed the incident so everyone found out what really happened, and it was Liam who got expelled. I think Alba only got excluded. What I find really awesome about the storyline though is not just that they had it. It was that the consequences of Liam’s actions set the course for the rest of the season, aka Dodgy Duncan. Liam’s actions caused the club’s image to go down the drain, and sponsors to leave, and that’s what made Duncan turn to the dark side. And it’s a subtle way to just say “Homophobia is bad”. Because Liam’s homophobia caused all the problems in the rest of the season. The First Time Dillon Let Himself “be Gay” Dillon took a long time to come out. And, like me, I think for a long time, nobody really suspected he was gay, in real life or in the audience. He never really showed it. I’m pretty sure when I was a kid, I would act super offended and upset if someone jokingly called me gay. So, yeah, it’s a slow burn. And we didn’t get any hints that he was gay, but that happens. Gay people are good at hiding, I think that’s why gay kids are often portrayed as loving theater. They already have to act their whole lives. It’s not easy to be in the closet. But I think that once Dillon was able to leave his father’s shadow, he was able to be more comfortable with himself, leading to him coming out to Elliot in episode 7. I think he had crushes before, specifically Michelle from season 2, but Elliot was the first time he felt like he could be himself. So here we have two massive points from other shows, but they haven’t been done together. The discussion of homophobia in the Dumping Ground, and the Slow Burn from Diary of a Future President. Social Media Presence Andi Mack made a huge deal about Cyrus being gay, like a week before the episode where he came out aired. HSMTMTS had Carlos be a gay stereotype from the trailer, and OK, Steven Universe was always gay. But Jamie Johnson, and the Dumping Ground didn’t make a big deal about it beforehand. They didn’t scream to the world “Look at us! We’re woke!” They showed it. They let people see for themselves, they let people debate for two weeks on Dillon’s sexuality, and they didn’t tell everyone that this was the episode Dillon would come out (though they made sure that everyone knew they should watch this episode). They just let people see for themselves. And after the episode aired, they made their move. They had the Jamie Johnson logo in rainbow colours to celebrate pride, they had a guide on how to react if someone comes out to you, and they had a history of pride, and I expect they’ll do even more on their social media after this week’s episode. @tkstrand reckons the Delliot post is Jamie Johnson’s most liked instagram post. I don’t know whether the other shows did this, but it’s a great gesture regardless. Oh, and there’s the fact that they’re doing a Bafta zoom conference on how they tackle issues. Choosing the Right Character and Breaking Ground for CBBC A lot of people on Instagram said that they thought it was Boggy who should be gay, and while I think either storyline would be great, I think that the writers made the right decision. 1) Boggy is an amazing person. He’s not afraid to be himself. I think, if Boggy was gay, then he wouldn’t have as much trouble coming out as Dillon is having. Of course, Boggy is going through stuff right now, but I still think he would have been a lot braver than Dillon and so we wouldn’t get the storyline we’re getting now delving into homophobia 2) If Dillon does have a minor or major role in season 6, we might get to explore homophobia in professional football, which would be super exciting 3) While Boggy is an amazing character, I’d reckon kids tend to gravitate to the coolest character as their favourite. And while Boggy radiates cool. (Seriously, check out the two posts I made on how sarcastic he is. And just look at his hat at the beginning of episode 1!
Tumblr media
But Dillon is the more traditionally cool character, so he’s more likely to be a fan favourite (that and the fact that he’s the best developed character in Jamie Johnson). So for those who aren’t necessarily homophobic, but don’t really understand homosexuality, Dillon is the perfect choice to have written as gay. Because after next week, the people who don’t believe Dillon is gay might leave the episode with a new understanding of LGBT people. It’s been done with TJ, who’s also a cool character, but people who want to ignore the gay subtext can because it was never said out loud in the show. And I reckon Dillon is a groundbreaking character for CBBC. Benny left soon after he came out, Luke left before he came out, May-Li is part of an ensemble cast, so in terms of a small number of main characters (the core 4 in JJ being Dillon, Jamie, Zoe and Boggy), so I think Dillon is the first gay main character (not ensemble character) on CBBC who has gotten a major gay storyline. Could be wrong, let me know if I am! Groundbreaking in General From what it looks like, the next episode is gonna focus completely on Dillon’s coming out storyline. Forget kids’ media, I don’t think I’ve seen an adults’ show that has an entire episode solely dedicated to an LGBT storyline. (Even Reunited from Steven Universe wasn’t completely focused on Garnet). Love Victor was jam packed with side stories and I think even Real O’Neals always had side stories to it. If another show has done this, I’d love to hear, but if Jamie Johnson really has the whole episode dedicated solely to Dillon, I think it’s huge. I only hope it doesn’t mean that the storyline will be forgotten about in the last 4 episodes, but since the head writer of Jamie Johnson is LGBT, I have no doubt they’ll do it justice. Does Jamie Johnson Have the Best LGBT Representation in Kids’ Media? No, I don’t think it does. Andi Mack has 2 seasons where we follow Cyrus on his coming out journey and Steven Universe has a lot more LGBT people, including a non-binary character. But in the aspects Jamie Johnson does well, it excels at. The homophobia storyline(s), and Jamie Johnson’s instagram presence. And having the best developed and best defined character be the one to show kids how to treat gay people. Thursday could be a historic moment for Kids’ television if they do this right, and I think they will. So I hope that everyone enjoys the episode! No, I swear this wasn’t a long promo for the next episode. No, I am not sponsored. Yes, this post was extremely long, I’m really sorry about that. I hope it’s worth the read. If not, don’t worry, this will almost definitely be my longest post. No, I don’t know how to have a “continue reading” button. Does anyone happen to know how? Thanks! Edit: Apparently 4 O Clock club had a gay main character first, so I got that wrong, but I still hold that Jamie Johnson is groundbreaking.

Rewatching Hot Potato Soup
Tumblr media
Three very important things happen in this episode:
Bobbi and Hunter are namechecked for what I believe is the first time since their very lamented departure.
The Superior Bigot is introduced.
The thematic foundation of the Framework arc is laid.
Number 3 is where the episode shines on rewatch.
Tumblr media
We all have programming. It may be more obvious in my case, but what is a human if not a function of programming? -- Radbot
What indeed. The theme of nature vs nurture and the influence exerted by the people in one’s life had already been touched upon in Ward’s story (which is why he’ll be back, ultimately), and will be central to the Framework, and especially Fitz’s part in it.
What makes us who we are is such a powerful question and scifi/fantasy shows are uniquely equipped to tackle it, since they can have completely different versions of the characters to play with, whether it’s an alternate universe, a new timeline or a computer simulation.
Radcliffe’s answer is that everything’s programming. How we are raised, who we befriend, the events in our lives, this is what makes us, us. Which also means that the Doctor isn’t Fitz. They share the “hardware” (or, well, they would if the Doctor wasn’t a digital construct) but not the “software”, and it’s the software that matters. It’s both a comforting answer and a very unsettling one, because it means anyone can become a monster.
The show’s answer...I’m still not entirely sure. Especially when considering the whole run of the show and not just the Framework arc. Maybe I’ll have an idea when I rewatch the relevant episodes. You know, in a decade or two. 🤭
Tumblr media
This is also the episode where Fitz joined the “difficult childhood” club, as we learn that his dad was an abusive asshole who abandoned him when he was ten and is the root of Fitz’s insecurities, woven in the character since S1.
Coulson’s dad died when he was nine. Ward’s parents were abusive monsters. Deke lost his mom as a kid, had a resentful relationship with his dad because of it and grew up in a post-apocalyptic society. And of course Daisy grew up without parents, was abandoned over and over by her foster families and chances are a few of those were abusive since she compared her childhood to Ward’s.
With what we just learned of Yo-Yo’s childhood trauma in 7x08, this leaves only May, Jemma and Mack growning up in more or less “normal” circumstances. Except there’s now a new timeline where Mack was orphaned at four.😩
Tumblr media
In addition to the groundwork for the Framework arc, the episode also features the first Philinda kiss (but it’s not real because it’s the Maybot and I bet that went over well 😂), more Koenigs than probably anyone had ever asked for, Mack’s unabashed hate of robots and a nice bit of investigative work by Daisy, who pulls all the Watchdogs threads together to arrive at the man behind them.
With a monicker like “The Superior”, I’m not sure what I expected but his little speech about Inhumans who didn’t “earn” their gifts makes him sound like those sports fans who bash supremely talented athletes in favour of those *they* perceive to be less naturally gifted because of course it’s so easy to become a champion when you are born with a lot of talent. As if it still didn’t require long years of training, dedication and sacrifices to become that good.
Plus, his obsession with Coulson as the source of all his hurt feelings is looney bin material.
Speaking as someone who also has a bit of a tendency to hyperfixate on fictional individuals, Anton? Get. A. Life. 😁
Stuff:
I'm not going to let this come between us. What's the occasional bullet in the head among friends? You know, that wouldn’t be the worst attitude to keep at S.H.I.E.L.D., considering. 😁
You need to understand...I'm the victim. Things are not as they seem. I’m not ashamed to admit I believed him. It would have been just like Radcliffe to get in over his head and then of course going from the pan to the fire.
Yeah, well, Koenigs don't break. All right? We're programmed to take pain, so bring it on! Bring it on! [Boom guy leaves] Oh, my God. I'm in so much pain. 🤣🤣🤣
Agent Koenig, welcome aboard.-- Agent Coulson, Agent May...A... Agent...Quake. Ah, yes, Sam, as usual, is my kindred Koenig. He’s the one that was fanboying over May way back in S2. And had the Star Wars sheets and the sci-fi socks collection. *And* was hiding behind the bar in this ep.😁
You're getting all Gollum-y again. -- Well, that's ... that's what the Darkhold does to you ... it drives you mad. Hate to say it, but this excuse is getting a little thin, my dear Dr. Radcliffe.
The old ways are better. [...] Man is the superior machine. And I...am the superior man. Oh, shut up.🙄
Speaking Latin and jerky body movements? You don’t need hacking, Fitz, you need an exorcism.
Where's Daisy when we need her? Where Jemma Simmons is me.
Speaking of Daisy, her choice of eye makeup has lighten up which I take it to mean that she’s feeling better about herself. Not that anyone’s going to ask her.😒
You don't need to protect me, Phil. -- I know. But I've lost too much lately. I'm not gonna lose you. *Philinda intensifies*
But you’re... you’re a superhero! I mean, that’s so awesome! Ikr? Sam is fanboying over Quake the way Skye was fangirling over Mike Peterson. Young Skye so needed to meet her older, superpowered self and annoy the crap out of her.
Trust? You betrayed me. [...] Betrayed me, betrayed S.H.I.E.L.D., he made me lie to you, and he made me think he was my friend. Just to use me. Just like Ward, feels like it could follow here.
You've been programmed ... by betrayal, abandonment... Ward, who you thought was your friend, Daisy who left you all, your father... Kindly leave Daisy out of this?
These Inhumans... they did not suffer, labor to become what they are. They have great power... but they didn't earn it. Watch S2 and then come back to me.
There's another one? -- No, not just another one.The first one. L.T. got us all into S.H.I.E.L.D. Not necessarily in contrast with Granpa Koenig becoming a proto S.H.I.E.L.D. agent in the 1930s but obviously the latest Koenig development wasn’t the plan at this stage (and maybe it should count as a ripple, if not a wave).
So you're telling me with all the tools and tech that S.H.I.E.L.D. has at its disposal, we can't find [his father]? -- We could. But Fitz doesn't want to. And believe me, it is for the best. Thoroughly unpleasant fellow and terrible influence.
Maybe we should toast to that. -- We've been, uh, making a lot of toasts lately. Maybe we should try something else. [starts leaning for a kiss] -- Guys, I think you need to get in here. Oh, excellent timing there, Daisy! 😁
Welcome to the inside of my mind, Sheeple. [...] you're being programmed through little screens, big screens, little morphine drips of sequels and prequels and zombies and Kanyes, Snapchats and Grumpy Cats, all designed by the media, corporate S.H.I.E.L.D. machine, and you're asleep, binge-watching the Apocalypse! Can you imagine what Thurston would make of 2020?
I don't want anything to do with your Agents of Doom. Thurston is a Feige fanboy, confirmed. 😁
Now, let's not lose our heads. The last guy who was fond of this phrase usually followed it up with very gory murder....
Maybe I'm stuck in a loop. Radcliffe...Ward... my dad...they're all the same. It keeps happening. Well, you’re also in a (sort of) spy show, Fitz. Nice to see you don’t hold a grudge against Mack (and Bobbi) for the Real S.H.I.E.L.D. business, though.
There was a lot of crying. [...] I picked on them.It was fun. The laundry was disgusting. Enough DNA to make a clone army. Ewww. The very definition of TMI.
I never read “Ulysses”. I always wanted to take a month off, go to Ireland, read it in pubs. Someday. You know, this wouldn’t be a half-bad final scene for whatever kind of Coulson might survive S7.
[the “Ulysses” in Irish pubs] it’s a little nerdy. Like that’d shocked her?😂
You're not May. -- Why would you say that? -- Because there's some things you can't fake. So. LMDs are bad kissers. At least this iteration of them. Jury’s out on the new and improved model.
Every time something strange happens in the world, it is there. I believe it is responsible for all of the alien problems on this planet. The Chitauri, the Kree, Inhumans. -- What is it? -- A man. He is always there. He is dead. Yet he is everywhere. Seriously, dude...just get a life.

Note
I’ve been rewatching the whole show before the final season starts and I’ve noticed so many details for example the music cue that is heard when anything to do with TAHITI, GH325 or the monoliths are mentioned or appear is actually Izel’s song!! Like they really do connect everything! Another thing I noticed was in s6 finale FitzSimmons stressed how dangerous it would be if the Chronicoms got Coulson’s brain scans...I mean foreshadowing or what?
Hi Anon,
Way back when I joined Tumblr and started doing the theory thing in Season 3 my very first theory that hit was “The Cult is Hydra” and I knew because the creepy music box tune kept playing  we also heard it when Fitz was taking pics of the city before we “learned” Will was Hive.
Sorry as a band geek you have opened a can of worms here.
I absolutely adore how the team uses those Music cues, sometimes across seasons in order to tie things together and even drop hints.  Also I love me Fitzsimmons Wedding theme and their theme overall.  Yeap, they have had a theme of their own since Season 1 (endgame OTP clue there).  But in the elevator with Coulson, Deke, and Fitz.  The second that first piano note played, just that one note, I freaking went through the roof.  Screaming “it’s happening” while falling off the couch and my child went to find confetti.
youtube
And the music swell at the end of this piece with the reveal of Deke being their grandson, showing that Fitzsimmons not only got married but they had a child and a future, ugh LOOOOVVEEEE.
youtube
Or this piece from Maveth, Crossing into Darkness.  Where Coulson officially crossed the line in killing Ward, setting off his arc for the second half of the season...and Hives.   The music builds and builds in the final moments on Maveth, Mack makes the Call, and then...we wait.  The castle going up, pod coming in,  we know at least Mack has made it but who else.  Mack, Daisy, Coulson all come out leaving Jemma looking into an empty pod, the music softens, they reunite, Coulson and FItz share that significant look, fade to black.  CHILLS.
Okay so moral of the rant is absolutely pay attention to the music cues in AOS.  For me it helps a lot with theorizing.  AIDA, Darkhold, Mace/The Patriot, Hive, the Chronicoms, Graviton, and Hydra are all just a few who have had their own themes quietly lurking in the background through an entire season.
Here is The Patriot’s Sacrifice theme beautifully intertwined with bits of the AOS theme then AIDA’s theme at the end as she observes her actions in and out of the Framework..
And yes AOS loves them some foreshadowing, even if it literally takes seasons to pay off in some cases.
The last red flag I’ve seen as big as the its really bad if the Cronicoms get Coulson’s brain is how dangerous it would be if Fitz was evil and we had all sorts of no fun with that in the Framework.  We are also getting a taste of how dangerous the Chronicoms are with the wrong knowledge in what they are doing with FItzsimmons scans and technically they got a 2 for 1 there.  They have Fitzsimmons and The Doctor (who in addition to the tech has how Hydra worked in the Framwork) and All the Bad Things Jemma.
Since we have a Red Flag waving this big its pretty much a given that its only a matter of time before it happens in the Season.

Agents Of SHIELD Easter Eggs For My Missed Episodes
Okay, so I fell very far behind the last few weeks. Work has been busy and exhausting, freelance work has been busy as well, and the state of the world in general here in Florida is pretty much the apocalypse. So, this Sunday, I binged the episodes I’ve missed. The Easter eggs are under the cut (or whatever tumblr calls it, I am livejournal old.) just because this is going to get long.
We’re starting with S7E07. Yes, that’s how far behind I am.
Obviously, there are spoilers, but since I feel like everyone else is ahead of me at this point, that’s probably a given. If you just want to escape the world for a while, have some Easter eggs.
.
.
.
S7E07 “The Totally Excellent Adventures Of Mack And The D”
The title
It’s a reference to the time traveling adventures of Bill and Ted, of course.
River’s End
This is the town just near the Lighthouse. It’s the town where Deke first materialized on Earth back in season five.
Run SOP7.07
When Russell gets the computer from his old classmate to check out, this is what’s on the screen when he boots it up. I think we all know that’s a reference to this being the seventh episode of the seventh season if you catch it on screen. The writing on the first print out kind of looks like Kree writing, but I think that’s just because all of the alien writing in the show looks Kree. (This whole sequence has nods to War Games, Weird Science, etc.)
Mack’s Model Car
The ‘67 corvette is the first model car Mack intends to take to his younger self and his brother. He puts it together instead. That’s the same model he tells Coulson he and his dad put together when he was a kid when he tries to convince Coulson to let him work on Lola in season two if I remember right.
Swayze’s Bar
Anybody else get a Roadhouse vibe, or just me?
“Don’t You Forget About Me”
I get that this song is probably chosen for the recognition factor, but I feel like it’s also Deke’s not so subtle way of asking the team and Mack to not forget him in 1982/3.
Deke Squad
The way Deke introduces them to Mack is an homage to the A-Team, right down to the music. Honestly, the pop culture references are many in this episode, and I probably won’t list them all because there are just so many 80s references.
The Chopping Mall Homage
Okay, this one I will mention because the director for Chopping Mall clearly didn’t understand that the show wasn’t ripping him off. Though there’s a lot of robotic references (like the Doctor Who Dalek “exterminate” from the Sybil-bots), the episode borrows a lot from Chopping Mall when it comes to the design of the robots.
Deke Speaks Russian
It’s clearly a FitzSimmons family trait to pick up on languages. Every time there’s a hiatus or significant time jump, it seems like Fitz, Simmons, and now, Deke learn a new language. Also - Russian is the language Bobbi is surprised no one knows in season three, though Daisy knows a few curse words.
Nathaniel Malick’s Look
Just me, or does he seem to be borrowing from Grant Ward’s season three closet?
.
.
.
S7E08 “After, Before”
The Establishing Shots For Afterlife
They look to be reused from season two, which probably saved the show a little money.
Jiaying In Blue
This is probably just a coincidence, but I like that they put her in blue for the episode. Why? Because when Raina is so determined to find out her destiny, she talks about stories her grandmother told her about “blue angels from the sky.” We know that’s the Kree now, but still, it’s a nice, likely unintentional, callback.
Elena’s Memories
The shrike is from last season. Ruby’s death is from season five. Tess’s death is also from season five. What they all have in common is guilt, May’s not wrong about that, but also Elena’s impulse control.
Abuela’s Necklace
That necklace is the same cross from season three that gets passed around the team in the finale, ending up in the quinjet bound for space that Hive and Lincoln die in. Elena’s remark about her father getting mixed up with bad people? That’s possibly a nod to her father being a supervillain in the comics.
“Time, Space, it’s never stopped us before…”
Nice nod to all the things Fitz and Simmons have been through over the years, and their remarks about the worst things they’ve been through in the past as well.
Kora And Nathaniel
Okay, so the dynamic between these two with Nathaniel convincing Kora to join him reminds me a whole lot of Ward convincing Kara Palamas to join him. It’s also what brought Daisy to Afterlife in the first place - the idea that her found family was afraid of her - but she realized the error she made eventually.
“You’ll bounce back.”
They’ve been saying this about Elena all season in regards to her mental state and her powers, so I’m glad this paid off with her figuring out real super speed instead of her dying. She’s now evolved beyond her comic book counterpart.
.
.
.
S7E09 “As I Have Always Been”
The title
It’s obviously a nod to Enoch’s line, but it’s also been said in the series before. Sybil has used the phrase “as I have always been” before, so it’s clearly a Chronocom thing.
The title card
I like that every time it’s a weird space/time story instead of defined by the decade, they’re using this particular title card that’s reminiscent of the one from Jemma being trapped on an alien planet.
“People like you.”
We can all agree Daisy reminds him of Peggy, right?
Removing the Implant
The images on screen when Daisy removes Jemma’s implant looks eerily similar to when Jemma removed files from a guy’s nasal passage way back in season one. I guess the special effects used for the computer screen is similar.
Enoch’s “heart”
Him simply pulling it out of his chest is not unlike Tony Stark pulling out the core keeping himself alive in the Iron Man movies. I also like that they equate this with Enoch’s heart in the same manner that Pepper Potts equated Tony’s with his.
Enoch’s Loneliness
Not really an Easter egg or a reference, but what Enoch describes, I think, is how everyone feels about found family storylines in shows like this. You find something you need in them and don’t want to let them go.
The Water Glasses
Interesting choice to train Kora with glassware. Daisy did that too. (Side note: how old is Kora supposed to be? She said she’s felt dangerous “for years.”)
.
.
.
S7E10 “Stolen”
The Title Card
I feel like they just get more and more 80s with every episode.
John Garrett’s Backstory
It’s almost word for word what Garrett explained when he was revealed as Hydra in the first season, right down to him holding his guts in his hands.
Durant
So, Malick calls the guy getting Lee’s powers Durant, but I kind of wonder if he’s meant to be the father of Durand. Gerald Durand is a mercenary in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. He works with Batroc on the Lemurian Star, hired by Hydra.
“Long haired creepo stabbed you with a pointy stick.”
That was Loki. John Garrett got to watch Avengers a few decades before it was released.
Sousa’s Stolen Moment Comment
I feel like that’s kind of a nod to Endgame and Steve becoming Peggy’s husband. Because all Steve wanted was a chance with Peggy and he didn’t care if that messed up the timeline. Sousa would give anything for just a moment, never mind a whole lifetime.
“If The Job Was Easy, It Wouldn’t Be Any Fun.”
The quote is a variation of one Garrett says when he’s originally in the show and both Ward and Trip are familiar with it. (He says “everyone would do it” instead of “it wouldn’t be any fun.”) I guess it’s something of a catch phrase for him.
The Room Holding Coulson and Gordon
That’s the same room that Cal destroys with his super strength when he’s not allowed to see Skye (Daisy) in season two.
“Best Day Ever!”
It’s kind of odd to what Garrett using this phrase since it was Cal’s, but I guess in a Jiaying heavy episode, it makes sense.
.
.
.
And that is it. I am caught up. It is unlikely that I will rewatch any of these to add more just because I’ve been so busy, so if you saw something I missed, feel free to let me know.

Agent H’s AOS Rewatch
Season 3 Pro’s and Con’s
We’re done with the season 4 rewatch, and I’m over here still trying to process season 3. First time watching, it was my least favorite season and I nearly stopped watching the show because of it. Second time watching…it’s still probably my least favorite just by comparison, but I have infinite more respect for it. Anyway, I needed to sort out my thoughts on this, so it’s all under “keep reading” and don’t get mad at me.
Cons (because let’s get the bad stuff out of the way)
-I really dislike revenge stories, so all the revenge stuff with Hunter and Coulson and Ward and all did not sit well with me and felt even OOC.
-Speaking of, from the S2 finale through most of this season, there’s this theme of the men protecting and revenging their wounded or fridged girlfriends. It’s not super fun because this is a show where the women are clearly just as, if not more, competent than the men, but they’re not given the same opportunity to protect/revenge the men, much less given the same importance even in their own stories. I’m blanking on what MCU movies were going on around the time of this season, but I remember seeing this even in the movies. If I remember correctly there was a head of MCU who was later removed, but was apparently responsible.
-The use of Ward is muddled. I’m cool with his takeover of HYDRA, that seemed natural. But you expect it to lead to a huge standoff with SHIELD because he, their worst enemy, is now head of their worst enemy organization. Instead, he gets converted to the HYDRA religion and literally becomes a vessel. Which is fine, but the transition was really hurriedly and poorly done. This is a man who has complex views of loyalty (Garrett not HYDRA. Skye and Coulson but not SHIELD), so I’m gonna need a lot more convincing that he’d believe Gideon’s HYDRA.
-This will be on both lists: I’m disappointed about how after three seasons HYDRA is taken out so quietly and quickly.
-I don’t know where to put this, but: I didn’t actually hate the space boyfriend arc as much the second time around, but the potential overall got squandered and I dislike that.
-Rosalind’s death and possibly her whole arc was pointless. She was literally created and killed to serve Coulson’s character. Gross. And it’s a shame because it would have been really cool to use her as an actual foe-turned-friend for SHIELD throughout the season; she could have easily taken Mace’s place in S4 and that way at least would have been important for two seasons
-Okay, this is ABC’s fault not AOS’s. But like I remember how hard they advertised for Secret Warriors. Like that was the name of the arc. And. Then. They were a team FOR AN EPISODE.  Imagine my disappointment. Also, there really weren’t enough Inhumans this season to suit me.
-Bobbi and Hunter leave for a failed spinoff and I will never forgive Marvel for doing that.
-I mean…I appreciate that they give Andrew a noble death, but like…was it really necessary to have him turn and later die? Really? It gives Ming Na Wen and Blair Underwood opportunities to do extraordinary acting and they nail it, but like maybe don’t kill a guy to solve your inevitable ship? Don’t kill off your second black actor?
-The time jump in the season finale is too sudden. Like we barely get to grieve over Lincoln and they hit us with a time jump and Daisy on the run and new director in charge. Uncool.
-This was the season I started to dislike Fitzsimmons. Don’t hate me. To me there’s an undercurrent in the writing that seems to favor Fitz over Simmons. FS’s subject to the same sexism that I mentioned in the first bullet. Like the story post-Simmons’ return focuses a lot more on Fitz’s feelings than on hers. He’s the one who has to stop her from getting tortured. He’s the one who saves Will, when it makes way more sense for her to go. He’s the one they all turn to for answers, when it should be both of them combined. And Simmons just gets a little pushed aside in her own story arc, but she just goes along with it anyway.
-I had to write this last because this is the thing that hurts the season the most for me: Lincoln’s treatment. Okay, first, he’s a great character who got a major personality change between seasons. I don’t like the personality change, but I’d be okay with it if they didn’t do worse. For starters, we barely know him. His life and backstory are so vague, the guy he visits in 3x03 is just “a friend”, and like we get zero information on how they know each other. They spend the entire season having everyone in SHIELD (except Daisy) be against him, dislike him, belittle him, and mistrust him WHEN HE DESERVED NONE OF IT. Like they make it really obvious that Coulson dislikes him father-style because of his relationship with Daisy. They make him petulant and act out to prove that Mack and May are right to mistrust him when really given the fact that he was an Inhuman guide and a medical doctor and a recovered addict, he’d be a lot more under control. They make Fitzsimmons talk down to him just because no one can be smart except Fitzsimmons, when clearly he would know more about Inhuman biology and medicine in general THAN THE BIOCHEM PHD (sorry that one will always bug me). Like they make some work on him with Coulson and May, and that’s good, but overall he is not allowed to have a solid relationship with anyone but Daisy. I think the writers 1) knew he was gonna die and decided not to invest in him or his relationships. 2) were trying to get a moody bad boy in the cast, and decided to cast him as it when it didn’t really make sense. Also, while talking about Lincoln, I really wish they did some more interesting things with his powers than lightning blasts. He has electric powers!! There’s so much you can do!!
-Okay, this one is just real personal. LINCOLN IS A MEDICAL DOCTOR. Or at least a medical student or resident or fellow (I mean, he’s in the hospital doing rounds). TREAT HIM AS SUCH. HE WANTED TO HELP PEOPLE, LET HIM HELP PEOPLE. LET HIM DO THE SURGERIES AND KNOW THE STUFF ABOUT BIOLOGY AND MEDICINE. LET HIM RETURN TO HIS OLD LIFE AS A DOCTOR. You had such a good character who turned himself around from addiction, dedicated his life to saving lives, got thrown multiple curve balls, and now has to decide how will he continue to serve others. Yes, he’s a hero in the end. But all that in between time, he could have been saving lives too.
Pros (because there is good stuff, I promise)
-Someone mentioned that this is the first season to have a unified storyline throughout, and that’s so true and it’s so well done!
-There’s a good natural continuation of the HYDRA and Inhuman storylines from S1 and S2. I think we can look at AOS as two large arcs: S1-S3 is about powered people and HYDRA. S4-S7 is about bending the limits of reality with Ghost Rider, LMDs, Framework, Space, and Time Travel,. S1 was about introducing us to powered people and HYDRA, S2 was about developing the history and politics of them respectively and how they relate to SHIELD. S3 is when Inhumans get involved with SHIELD and with the world directly and the fallout from that. For HYDRA it’s when we get the history and reasoning of the group, and even if it’s a retcon, I appreciate that it introduces the background of HYDRA as a way to end this arc
-Overall, I really do appreciate how this season fills out a lot of worldbuilding. We get a complete history on HYDRA, and we get way more info on Inhumans, but we also get to see how the human world is reacting to and divided on Inhumans, which carries over into the net season
-On both lists: It’s good that they take HYDRA out so quickly and quietly. That plotline had run its course, and it was so bittersweet because they finally had defeated their biggest enemy, but now they had even bigger problems to deal with it. That scene of Coulson and May watching HYDRA fall is one of my favorites because it mirrors that S1 scene of watching HYDRA takeover, but it’s so quiet and not celebratory like it should be.
-Like I said, I hate revenge arcs, but I do appreciate how it came full circle at the end with Coulson admitting his mistake and regret in seeking revenge. That’s much more on brand with Coulson and MCU even I had to sit through a painful arc just to get to that point.
-Episode 1, Daisy’s entrance and, for that matter, Fitz’s entrance. HOT DAMN.
-One of my favorite things about AOS is the way that they mix up pairings and everyone feels like friends and family. This season did a fantastic job on that with like Fitz/Bobbi, Mack/Daisy, Hunter/May, and way more.
-I complain that there wasn’t enough Inhumans to suit me, but also I really enjoyed the ones we got. I expected them to do Inhumans with basic powers like water, fire, plants, shrinking. But AoS writers were like nah, how about a guy who melts metal?? How about Medusa eyes?? How about a guy who can predict deaths? Like they just went straight to the extremes and I respect that. And yes, we have our typical speedster and fire guy, but the sheer joy that comes from those characters makes up for the predictability of their powers.
-We get Joey and Yoyo who are the effin’ best and deserve the world. And with Lincoln and Daisy we got SECRET WARRIORS!!!!
-First time, we get introduced to Charles and Robin and manipulating time, which obviously becomes important later, so I like that they introduce it so early in the show.
-I also love the way things come full circle with Lash. I wish he didn’t die, but the reveal of his true purpose was amazing
-THE FITZSIMMONS KISS. THE FITZSIMMONS SEX SCENE. Do I really need to say more?
-THAT FITZ vs MONOLITH SCENE. That is top like five moments of the show for me, and I’m gonna need the Emmys to give Iain de Castecker his belated Best Actor award any day now.
-4722 Hours was a work of art, and Elizabeth Henstridge, I will be getting you that Best Actress Emmy one way or another.
-Brett Dalton’s acting. This rewatch served to highlight how brilliantly he developed Ward’s evilness over the course of the three seasons and then the way he flipped the switch and played a completely different character as Hydra. You can feel it in his voice and mannerisms, it’s a totally different person even if it’s still technically Ward’s body. And to top it off, that finale where he pulls of a brilliant two-minute psychotic breakdown and a kickass fight scene. Standing ovation, good sir. I miss you.
-After S2 fridged three women of color, I do appreciate how this season chooses to take out four of its white characters even if I’m sad that they had to go.
-The Star Wars references were so effin’ funny
-Spy’s Goodbye. I will never be okay about this.

hello there lovely mack!!
i hope your doing well, I have some asks here from the doctor who asks: 7, 3, 4 :D
:DD hi!! i'm doing pretty good hehe thank you
3 - favourite male companion
ooh i think graham - he had a nice personality and was a caring guy but also seemed very human yknow?? like companions often get a bit weird after long enough in the tardis but graham was a down-to-earth kinda guy the whole time, he was sweet. idk if he really counts as a companion as such but wilf is wonderful as well hehe. and jack's more of a side character than a companion but omg jack harkness he's so fun
4 - favourite story
oughhhhhh nghhhhhhh uhm okay my heart is calling me to wild blue yonder I FREAKING LOVE WILD BLUE YONDER but i think i like it more as a character study yknow?? most of my favourite parts of doctor who are Character Moments. silence in the library / forest of the dead has stuck with me for quite a while even though i've only actually seen it once (but i'm gonna rewatch it maybe even this evening tbh.... thinking about it a lot recently). waters of mars is another favourite for character reasons but also for plot reasons nghhhh i really like that one. not so much a story but kind of an arc?? at the end of s10 when bill is reunited with heather (the girl with the star eye who got taken by the water) (side note i LOVE it when doctor who episodes use water as a force nghhh sopping wet show) and they finally get to hang out... like bill wanted too... like i know that's not really a story but yeah. idk i dont have one favourite doctor who is just so hnnnnnnrg!!
7 - rank the doctors from best to worst
i couldnt to this normally i had to make a tier list
Tumblr media
like i love ten forever even with the Issues but he IS DIFFERENT from fourteen and i stand by this there are things fourteen did or didnt do that ten would have handled very differently its not just the same guy. thirteen my beloved thirteen this is a case of i am taking canon and running with it because i know deep in my heart that she is so so so much more than we got to see. nine and twelve are swag of course, fifteen is WONDERFUL but he hasnt been in enough situations yet to get a proper character analysis yet yknow?? and eleven is. okay i guess. like he could have been better but he wasnt bad or anything he just kinda annoyed me sometimes. idk.
anyways [ shirt that says ask me about doctor who please dear god i have Things To Say] pretty cool show huh?

gonna catch up REAL quick then make an actual effort for the rest. thank you to @bunnykaye for doing this!
1 - favorite season: 4 i just loved having the 3 pods and how different they were and how they built up on each other and how the final big bad was predictable but not. the way they brought back old characters, too - it was like a mini-season 5. i would say 5 or 6 were my favorite except each have an episode that upset me so much that i can’t watch... but s4 just always is incredible, start to end
2 - favorite episode: 6x03 there are so many great classic episodes, and i’m sure if i thought about it for more than a few seconds i could come up with a different favorite, but i’m always down for a girl’s night and seeing skimmons high together was so delightful. it was clear the writers and actors had sooo much fun with this episode, and the fitz and enoch story was interesting and weird too.
3 - favorite storyline: wibbly wobbly, timey whimey...stuff so basically all of season 5? i loved getting to the final episode and having the final puzzle piece come into place, then going back to rewatch and making the connections. as a doctor who fan (clearly lol) i just love time travel stories! and i had a half hour debate with my brother after the finale about what actually happened lmao. good times.
4 - favorite male character: LEO FITZ i see so much of myself in that fool and iain is one of the best actors in the cast, if not the very best. no wonder literally everyone else chose fitz lmao
5 - favorite female character: melinda may what can i say? i love my badass warrior milf. jokes aside, she’s such a cool and interesting character and despite people feeling like the writers didn’t know “what to do with her” after like season 4, i think they did an amazing job with her. she doesn’t have to be the center of drama. sometimes she’s just the badass that kicks alien ass. what more could you want???
6 - favorite friendship: the bus kids i just... i love our little children. i want them all to hang out.
7 - favorite ship: fitzsimmons skimmons isn’t canon and philinda is too sad. i would’ve said yoyomack but s6 kinda ruined it for me. so i’m gonna be a pleb and pick the heart of the show.
8 - favorite noncanon ship: bio...morse? idk what the names are i almost said skimmons but bobbi and jemma were way closer to being canon than skimmons imo. i mean, the bisexual energy coming off of fitz and jemma in the first pod of season 2 was palpable. damn. i mean, i totally understand. mack and bobbi can get it.
9 - favorite guest star: samuel l. jackson do you remember the first time you watched season 1 and director fury showed up outta nowhere at the end of episode 2 and you thought “holy shit that’s awesome!” and didn’t expect to see him ever again, and then he shows up later to SAVE FITZSIMMONS’ LIVES during the finale and provide witty banter and giant guns with coulson? cuz i do

Did not finish
Horsehead (Romain Basset, 2014) Sinister (Scott Derrickson, 2012)
Did not like
Sorrowful Shadow (Guy Maddin, 2004) Mistery Lonely (Harmony Korine, 2007) Uncut Gems (Josh and Benny Safdie, 2019) The Last Séance (Laura Kulik, 2018) The Holy Mountain (La montaña sagrada, Alejandro Jodorowsky, 1973) Doctor Sleep (Mike Flanagan, 2019)
Okay
Queen of Earth (Alex Ross Perry, 2015): The way it was filmed reminded me of The Midnight Swim and Always Shine. I watched it because Elisabeth Moss is in it but was rather disappointed in the end -- it was beautifully shot but went nowhere
Black Christmas (Sophia Takal, 2019): Like Assassination Nation, this is a film I'm glad young people today have -- and it was fine, and if there’s anything I’ve got to say about so-called raging feminists it’s that we need more of them, but yeah the ending was disappointing and I felt that I had aged out of the target audience a good number of years ago
The Evil Dead (Sam Raimi, 1981): Finally saw this! Love me a a good campy horror story once in a while
The Wailing (곡성, Gokseong) and The Chaser ( 추격자, Chugyeokja) (Na Hong-jin, 2016 and 2008): A healthy dose of wtf in both of those, I’m still not sure I “correctly” grasped the intended tone. I also just lost all interest in The Chaser when (spoiler) the girl died. What’s the point of that? Are we in Game of Thrones now? I may still be angry about that, actually
Inherent Vice (Paul Thomas Anderson, 2014): I know it’s a good film but it bored me to death. I don’t like stories about men or drugs
Zombieland: Double Tap (Ruben Fleischer, 2019): A sympathetic, slightly disappointing sequel
Waves '98 (Ely Dagher, 2015): I don’t remember much about this short but I did think it was good
Room (Lenny Abrahamson, 2015): I couldn’t watch this as separate from the book, it felt more like a companion film to me than anything else. It was good I think, but I’m definitely not the best judge on this one, because the book was so amazing and I’m still not over it, apparently
And Then There Were None (René Clair, 1945): Was it good? Who knows. They changed the ending and added in a crap love story, so who cares, really
Wildling (Fritz Böhm, 2018): I liked it? I didn’t really see the “feminist themes” in this but it was good
Delphine (Chloé Robichaud, 2019): This is one of those short films that are a little too “slice of life” for me to really enjoy. I can tell it’s good, tho
The Red Balloon (Le Ballon rouge, Albert Lamorisse, 1956): This is apparently a classic short film, and I think I would have enjoyed it a lot had I seen it in 1956. Seeing it today, when everything in it has been used in a hundred thousand other films, made it fall flat a little
Nona. If They Soak Me, I’ll Burn Them (Nona. Si me mojan, yo los quemo, Camila José Donoso, 2019): Watched this because it was directed by a woman! Did not know what to expect at all. The non-linear narration kept me trying to remember if there was something I could possibly have skipped that would have made more sense of it. I think the premise (old woman throws Molotov cocktail at former lover’s car) is better than the finished product, although it is very well-shot and the acting is amazing
Good
Dogs of Chernobyl (Léa Camilleri & Hugo Chesnel, 2020): Short documentary that had me on the verge of tears several times (you can watch it for free on YouTube!)
Les Misérables (Ladj Ly, 2019): It’s hard to talk about films like these. It is very good, very important, I think everyone should watch it. Think a new La Haine
The Daughters of Fire (Las hijas del fuego, Albertina Carri, 2018): Loved the reflection on pornography. The pornography itself was a little more... boring... but I appreciate the intention, and the guts it took to shoot something like this
The Fallen Idol (Carol Reed, 1948): An amazing British classic (adapted from Graham Greene!) that I had somehow never heard of. Great acting, especially considering the main character is a small child
Too Late to Die Young (Tarde para morir joven, Dominga Sotomayor Castillo, 2018): There will be people in this world to say that "uhh nothing happens in this film", a statement to which my reply will be twofold: first, it's beautiful so who cares, and second, how many other films have you seen that take place in a commune in the 1990s in Chile? That's what I thought. Shut up
Made in Dagenham (Nigel Cole, 2010): Films like this and Suffragette, that is, mainstream films about the working classes and political activism, are almost bound to be flawed, but I'm grateful they exist all the same. And how many of those have we seen that are about workers’ unions, with an all-female main cast, and nuanced dialogue about communism and the place of women in the home and of men in feminism? I’m glad that male directors have finally figured out that one of the best ways to avoid showing a one-dimensional idea of women is to have lots of them in one film. And Sally Hawkins! I love her
The Color of Pomegranates (Նռան գույնը, Nřan guynə, Sergei Parajanov, 1969): Another one of those classics I had never heard of (until I got Mubi!). Indescribable, beautiful
Lost Girls (Liz Garbus, 2020): Really liked the speech at the end about the police failing the victims and their families, really liked that the old inspector guy wasn't made to be someone who was on the side of the victims instead of on his own side. Bleak, sobering. When I watched this I didn't know Garbus was the person who directed that Nina Simone documentary, which I also love. Will definitely seek out more Liz Garbus in future
Ghost Town Anthology (Répertoire des villes disparues, Denis Côté, 2019): I watched this not knowing anything about Denis Côté or the film, and I loved the atmosphere even before the supernatural element really kicked in. Films like this and The One I Love or Everything Beautiful is Far Away are my kind of low-key science fiction
Meshes of the Afternoon (Maya Deren and Alexander Hammid, 1943): Aaaand another classic I finally saw! It just warms my heart to see that stuff like this was being made (by a woman!!) in the 1940s
Circus of Books (Rachel Mason, 2019): I saw a headline calling this “the queer Stories We Tell” and I loved Sarah Polley’s documentary and wouldn’t go quite that far but I can see where it’s coming from. A good autobiographical documentary about the complexity of families
Catfish (Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, 2010): I think everyone going into this today knows what this is going to be about, but let me tell you, it does not reduce the impact
The Strange Love of Martha Ivers (Lewis Milestone, 1946): Barbara Stanwyck and Lizabeth Scott! Murder! Intrigue! Love and sleaze!
The Lodge (Veronika Franz & Severin Fiala, 2019): This was so efficient. It is so well-done, and Riley Keough is amazing as usual. More subtle than Franz and Fiala’s last effort, Goodnight Mommy, and at least as good
Sans Soleil (Chris Marker, 1983): It’s hard not to be disappointed by this after hearing every film bro I’ve ever met describe this as his fave ever. It is... pretty racist and sexist... but yes, very pretty, very nice if you can get past that
Faves
Firecrackers (Jasmin Mozaffari, 2018): Is this a coming-of-age story? Anyway it’s about two working-class teenage girls in small town Canada who are this close to making their dream of leaving for New York, and one of them is fuuuuucked up...
The Grand Bizarre (Jodie Mack, 2018): I think this is what I want from a non-narrative documentary. I’m tired of seeing pretentious Godfrey Reggio knockoffs. This quite simply blew my mind and is one of those very rare films I can see myself rewatching ten times
Queen & Slim (Melina Matsoukas, 2019): I can’t not compare this to Natural Born Killers and Thelma and Louise, both of which I used to love and haven’t seen in a number  of years -- but Queen & Slim is quite possibly better than both of those. The tone, the breadth, the acting -- even the soundtrack. It’s a masterpiece
Invisible Man (Leigh Whannell, 2020): This is about a man who creates an invisibility suit. This is also about a woman who is being stalked and abused by a controlling man who just won’t rest until he has completely destroyed her -- but of course, since this is cinema and the woman in question is Elisabeth Moss, she ultimately beats the shit out of him. This was very difficult to watch for me but I’m glad I stuck through
*
I got Mubi this month! So glad I did. It’s so much better than both Filmstruck (RIP) and Amazon Prime. I like that choices are made for me up to a certain extent -- and those choices often turn out very good, and always interesting. And yes, we’re still in lockdown, I’m still unemployed, hence the number of films watched this month. Hopefully we can get out in May and I’ll end up watching less!

AoS S2 Rewatch: Thoughts I Forgot
The premise of me, as a human, is
that I love this show so much I rewatch it from the beginning so I’m all caught up to binge the new season when it comes to Netflix or wherever, and
Season 1 was so off-putting, this annual rewatch always starts with Season 2
Because what happens in S1 that’s so important, anyway?  If it was important, then I’d remember it/pick it up through inference.  It saves a lot of time and who needs to wade through old garbage to root around for gems that may not even be there?
So I rewatched S1 for the second time in my life last week, and completely heel-turned my stance on its quality and worth-watchingness.
Here’s a short list of things that makes S2 WORSE because S1 details are fresh in the mind, lolololol
Raina gets completely rewritten.
This is a “worse” in the sense that, always starting from S2, my vague S1 memories is that she’s beautiful and mysterious and self-serving and just generally The Best, and the her vs Skye for magical alien powers battle is an epic one, and she gets what she deserves by having her beautiful outsides and ugly insides get reversed
ok but none of this is set up in S1 and most of it is invented in S2
we never know ANYTHING about her from her S1 actions, other than that she’s loyal to no one but herself.  So, now she’s canonically recognized as a con artist, okay.  But where did she get the man-eater “reputation” she evidently has by 2x5?
Tumblr media
Did I miss all the parts in S1 where she hit on the Centipede doctor and Scorch and Edison Po and the Clairvoyant (/Garrett) and Ward to convince them to let her join them?  iirc, she just packages their desires and aspirations and frames herself as someone who can get them there.  Garrett didn’t even meet her in person before he started having her do his dirty work for him so .....it must have been her devilish feminine wiles that did it.  Yep.
Also the whole con-artist thing in such specificity also comes from this new S2 narrative for her, in that she was a street kid living off her wiles until the Crazy Random Happenstance that she meets Cal.
Which makes her presence in S1 all the wackier.  I mean, everyone’s presense in that season revolves around wanting to stay close to Coulson after Project T.A.H.I.T.I. ... except for Skye, the literal variable in the equation who is just there on accident.  Come the tag scene of S1 into S2, Raina, who all this time has been after the Clairvoyant who has been after Coulson suddenly ALSO has life-changing, Coulson-agnostic ties to Skye of all people ...
Ultimately it’s forgivable because Destiny is also at work here, and Daisy was always going to end up Daisy and here’s the thread of events that causes it to be so.  ... but if I hadn’t have watched S1, it wouldn’t have felt like such an obvious, mercenary re-write.
Because also then S2 Ward is like “I’ve always wanted to tell you about your father.” and it’s like BRUH.  Even if you’re explaining it away as Raina told you when you both worked with Garrett ... you and Raina had about thirty minutes together last season and you didn’t particularly get along.  When, exactly, did she find time to chat you up about the intimate details of your mutual crush frenemy?
Poor Trip.  He has about a full season of episodes under his belt across S1 and S2 and it’s obvious they were just biding their time with him until they could figure out how to write him off.
Especially in S2 where the Team expands to include Mack and Bobbi and Hunter, and all these peeps get personalities and motivations and, like, plots, and Trip just stands there in the back making jokes about how the Koenigs are LMDs.
Watching only S2, it really feels like they needed somebody around to be sacrificed, to make the transition to the Inhuman storyline personal for everybody, but that they didn’t want to give up anyone super critical (just critical enough for everyone to be shocked and sad).
But also -- did they?  Imagine if Trip had just, not joined Team Coulson at the end of S1, we never saw him again, and nobody had to be sacrificed in the caverns ... I mean, Coulson could have been the one to pull the timing pins and fend off Mack and still not make it into the transformation chamber in time ......
we already had Hartley and several civilians to tell us what the Diviner does to non-Inhumans .... I feel like they’re trying to get us to believe that the stakes are This High but they’re really just hiding their need to get rid of a dead-weight character under a veneer of Gravitas.
I’m thinking forward to Framework!Trip where everyone’s So Happy to see him and even then I’m always like “ ... are you, though?  Feels like you barely knew the guy.  Maybe there was S1 stuff I missed”
spoiler alert: there wasn’t
Last one, the mystery of Who Are Bobbi and Mack Working For isn’t as thrilling after you’ve seen it the once, and now after seeing Fury specifically hand SHIELD to Coulson in person at the end of S1 ... the whole “I’m working for SHIELD and you’re working for Coulson” reveal just sort of doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

I’m kind of not in the mood to watch Andi Mack right now... Instead, I’m going to rewatch a bunch of Doctor Who episodes (starting from the episode ‘Rose’) and I guess I’ll liveblog it. If you don’t want to see posts from this liveblog, blacklist the tag “dr who rewatch”
yep.
