Battle Ram (2023)
Tumblr media
Battle Ram is a 2023 bullet hell game, (or what Steam calls a 'spectacle fighter').You play as a little ram, perhaps the eponymous 'Battle Ram' himself, and you're tasked with fighting off waves upon waves of ever increasing numbers of robots set upon you by a set of unknown scientists, with nothing but your horns and a bit of force.
Despite its bleak undertones and its seeming indulgence in the unethical treatment of sheep, it's a rather cutesy-looking affair. The game aesthetically looks and feels almost 15 years out of time, clearly taking heavy inspiration from the greats of the golden age of Adobe/Macromedia Flash, with its thick outlines and squiggle animation and whatnot. In fact, I'd be willing to say that the aesthetics are achieved so well that you could almost mistake it for a lost Edmund McMillen game fell from the skies and into my Steam library.
Gameplay-wise, our little ram romp unfortunately leaves a lot to be desired. Since this game appears to be a solo-developed affair, I'll sing its praises first before shearing it clean.
I enjoy the game's movement quite a lot. It's a little clunky, but it's incredibly fluid and works well in the game's playing field. It's very momentum-based, and you need to watch when repeatedly headbutting robots, lest you rubberband a million miles out of bounds. Fortunately, you won't be alone in your robot-destroying endeavours, as they can damage each other! This leads to later levels where you can sit and watch a whole battalion of robots wipe themselves out in their own bullet-infused carpet bombing. All of this is complimented by some pretty basic but fitting electronic music.
Alas, for every little thing that this game does right, there's a little flaw that at best is just a little annoyance, but at worst completely takes me out of it.
The most major complaint I have with Battle Ram is that, for a game that seems to be going for a guns blazing, bullet hell gameplay loop, it's very inconsistent in the collision and hitboxes of its entities. Generally, in most major bullet hell releases, the player has a notably small hitbox, letting them weave in and out of enemy fire (Fans of the Touhou Project, you'll recognise this pretty clearly). Yet, in Battle Ram, our beloved little titular ram can't seem to make his little mind up as where his hitbox begins and ends.
When trying to graze by enemy fire, it's not uncommon to be wiped out by bullets that weren't even touching the ram. On the flip side, don't even try to attack robots from head on. It's almost like the sheep's hitbox on the Z axis is paper thin, so almost every single time you try to ram into a robot from either the direct left or right, you'll just end up going straight past them, ending up either in front of or behind them.
On a much less experience-ruining note, something that certainly destroyed the flow of gameplay for me was when you die, the music stops and you're sent back to the main menu, where you can then press play and continue where you left off. This is in contrast to completing a level, which immediately takes you to the next wave and continues the music from there, creating an excellent gameplay flow, keeping you in the zone. This unfortunately means that dying can ultimately kill your flow, and make it harder to jump back into the game. This can get especially annoying in the later levels that rely much more on pattern memorisation.
Final Verdict All in all, Battle Ram is a perfectly solid bullet hell romp. It's by no means perfect, and certainly isn't an all that ewe-nique experience, but it's certainly not a baaaad time. If you ever need to kill an hour of time with some sheepy goodness, there's certainly worse ways to do it. Baaaaaa~! 🐑✨

So flash (as almost everyone reading this probably knows it) used to be something very different before version 5.0. Going way back to version 1.0, Flash was a product called Macromind Director for 68k Macintosh which worked somewhat like Powerpoint and could compile its output to standalone apps (which it called projectors). This was in the era before memory protection and projectors could do all sorts of fun system calls because why not? Opening the CD drive was one of these. Skip forward 20 years, Macromind is now Macromedia and Director is now Flash and targeted towards the internet. It's still very lightweight (seriously, early flash has overhead comparable to an animated gif) but critically the syscall interface is still there for some reason, and you can still open the CD drive for it.
So, back in 2002-ish, someone made and bought adspace for a Free Cupholder banner on (iirc) N64.com and people flipped out so hard over it being a security issue that it lead to Macromedia completely overhauling the scripting system for Flash 5 into the complex, cpu-heavy game-engine monstrosity most people are familiar with and completely removing the syscall interface.
And that's why the stupid cupholder joke is a load-bearing part of internet history.

My haul of stuff from VCF East XIX.
I bought the Sega Genesis and the Commodore 1950 monitor.
I ordered and distributed the t-shirts for the Retrotech Crew, and that one is mine.
Everything else was a gift or freebie. Including a copy of Macromedia Flash 5 in the box, Windows 3.0 boxed, and a Greaseweasel floppy interface.

designings / Gasbook / Patterns for Modernities /Adobe Director / 1998
In addition to being a showcase for the most cutting edge in motion graphics, macromedia flash, film, and design Gasbook often included royalty free design assets in their issues. Seen here are a series of 200 patterns in .eps and .jpg format displayed through the Adobe Director .exe included on the CD-ROM that came with Gasbook 5;Paradise. Often these issues would also include fonts, photos, and music to serve as starting point for would be designers who wanted to apply the inspiration Gasbook provided to their own work. Gasbook 5;Paradise can be found here for download. Music is Groovetube by Flipper's Guitar from Doctor Head's World Tower(1991).

New framework seems to have performance issues
This version of ABP for the new Safari framework unfortuantely seems to kill performance on my computers. Maybe it’s partially related to them being a bit older (one is a Mid 2011 Mini, the other is a 2012 iMac), but with ABP enabled I can’t even open a new tab/window and type a URL into the bar and expect Safari to accept the input without having to hold down the return key until it goes or wait a minute after opening a new tab or window. I also noticed that using Twitter was jumpy and lagged even with simple typing, it felt like all the dynamic content it relies on was just struggling to be processed through whatever framework Apple is forcing. Hopefully the devloper can figure out the performance issues because it’s really, really bad now.
By Ramblin'Rose
why isn’t this working?
I have ABP and it wasn’t perfect but worked fairly well for my needs. Recently, it simply disappeared. (I see someone else said that could be from the latest iOS update, but I don’t have that on my desktop yet). When I tried to reinstall, it showed me two boxes to check. The way I read it, if you checked the box that said you wanted the icon visible in the toolbar, it would be able to read sensitive information of all kinds on any page. What good is an app of any kind that allows for that?! As it was, with only the one box checked, it only blocked very few ads, and I was still getting requests from sites to be whitelisted without being able to fnd any way to do it. I’ve got all kinds of garage showing up on my Facebook page, and you guys have ruined what was a reasonable product. WHY?
By PeopleRsad
Still works for me
Almost didn’t download the new version based on the recent reviews, however after looking at the other apps here that claim to be ad blockers I didn’t’t see too many alternatives. I decided to go ahead and get the new version and so far its pretty much the same as the old version, lots of ads blocked. I’m happy, just make sure you go through the simple set-up.
By achilds19
Works well but
After much research, I understand the issue with Apple changing the rules on the devs so they had to build this app from scratch. Works well for me so far, except for one annoying problem. I use Yahoo mail and it's not hiding the ad that appears in the top line of the inbox even with unchecking the Acceptable Ads box, which is super annoying. I know the devs are watching these reviews, so if someone can point me to an extension or something that will fix that, I'd appreciate it. Was using AdGuard and it fixed that problem, but that app behaves like spyware and is constantly running in the background even after you close Safari.

FLASHBack: Week 82 [Bisected-Month Brackenwood] - Littlefoot
It's the middle of July so FLASHBack is off on another visit to Brackenwood, the fantastical world created by former Disney animator Adam Phillips. This month's animation, Littlefoot (No, not that one), was released by Phillips on his Bitey Castle website on 5 November 2005, and then posted to Newgrounds three days later on November 8th, where it was Frontpaged, and won the Daily Feature and Weekly User's Choice awards. This chapter of the Brackenwood Saga focuses on the bigfoot-like Morrugs, in particular a pint-sized juvenile of the race, hence the title. The story opens with Littlefoot's parent frantically searching the forest and calling out for them, and Adam uses some shots in this sequence to demonstrate depth-of-field effect, where the "camera's" focus is narrowly limited to the subject of the shot at the particular moment. We then cut to a scene of some Brackenwood wildlife, a feathergnat being eaten by a petalfly, which then floats off, jellyfish-like. (The petalflies were originally called Umbrellaflies, but Philips changed the name, reasoning that Brackenwood doesn't have umbrellas.)
The petalfly attracts the attention of the missing Littlefoot, who goes bouncing down a hill after it and then follows it into a grassy field clearing. The scene then cuts to Bitey, who is being his usual horrid self, until he's confronted with a spider, which absolutely unnerves him. (The look on the spider's face when Bitey runs off is absolutely priceless.) Bitey's retreat brings him to the same field that Littlefoot is in, and he goes back into brat mode, stalking up on the young morrug just as it's about to make friends with a fatsack. Bitey torments Littlefoot, who flips into berserk mode, eyes going green as a signal for "this morrug's going feral on your ass". We get some more good depth-of-field as the parent, also in a green-eyed angry state, snatches Littlefoot from Bitey with a roar. The dashkin bully can't leave it at that though, and uses his speed to run up, throw a clod of dirt and grass at them and run off again. The morrugs then demonstrate why you don't get in a throwing-things fight with them, by throwing a pair of boulders at Bitey, braining the jerk senseless.
We're then treated to Phillips being an absolute show-off with his lighting work, giving us a gorgeous example of a sunset/moonrise portion of a day/night cycle. But as the moon comes up, an ominous chant begins to arise: "YUYu, YUYu, YUYu..." Out of the darkness, a score of shadowy and twisted humanoid figures with glowing eyes and fangy pointed teeth rise up, and begin speaking in an alien sounding tongue. They note that Bitey is injured, and then declare that they will steal him, ending the animation on that cliffhanger. This ending seems to come out of nowhere, but it was actually hinted at with some very well hidden easter eggs throughout the animation. Phillips had actually made a contest where he had hidden 20 things for the fans to find and screenshot, and the contest went unwon, because no one found them all (the prize was a copy of Macromedia Studio MX 2004 and a Bitey T-Shirt). A handful of the hidden easter eggs were early appearances by the creatures at the end.
Adam also included an homage to the controversial SFX/SEX dust scene from The Lion King, a face hidden in the thrown boulder, and a reflection of Bitey in Littlefoot's eyes. Most of the easter eggs hidden in this Flash however, were messages written in a constructed language that Phillips had invented for Brackenwood, called Sarus. Sarus is an evolution of an earlier 19th century real-world ConLang, Solresol. Both use the Do-Re-Me-Fa-So-La-Ti pitch nomenclature (known as Solfège). While Sarus is based on variants of those seven syllables, it could alternately be communicated with their corresponding musical notes, a color spectrum, or even hand gestures. (The same association of notes, colors, and hand gestures also applies to Solresol, which was used as the basis of Earth's attempts to communicate with the aliens in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.)
For this animation's easter eggs however, he used a written form of Sarus called septaglphys in which the syllables of a Sarus word were represented by pen strokes made from corner to corner of a seven sided polygon. The first few septaglyph easter eggs were just instructions on where to look for further easter eggs, but then Phillips began foreshadowing the cliffhanger ending, with phrases such as "la miflyt mirek mimrum / the hills have eyes", "la lafyd laf la somid / the lady of the night", and "dorlyt laf la soruf / people of the shadow". (More or less -- the word "laf" translates to "of" in the earliest versions of Sarus, but this was later changed to be Sarus for "less". In the most recent versions of the language, "of" is translated as "remir".)
There was also a Sketchpad easter egg at the end, featuring lineart concept drawings. When Philips first released the animation, he billed it as Part 1 of 2, and hidden past the sketchpad was a note in Sarus septaglyphs that said that the story is not finished. As it turned out though, this particular story arc was big enough that it wouldn't get finished in part 2 either. Part 1 would be the last time that Adam would compose and record his own music; subsequent Brackenwood Flashes would feature outside music talent.
That wraps it up for now. Next week, we'll continue on seeing what kind of flash Flash animation could come from too much spare time.
