Under the Tuscan Sun
Uno: RSVP Due: Mistaken Identity Tre: Grinning and Mandolining in Sunny Italy Quattro: I Do, I Do, I Do @rowsandrows-of-roses
She didn’t want to talk about it anymore. So, she broke eye contact with him, putting her head against her own arm, more or less tucking it under his chin.
“Sorry, it got cold,” she said, but she didn’t feel sorry at all.
--
There was a finality to the moment that he didn’t like, even though he had known that it was coming. His voice was soft, little more than a murmur, as he replied, “It’s fine.”
Maybe it was selfish of him, but, he figured, she had started it. So he pressed his cheek to the top of her head, surrounding himself with the floral scent of her, and kept them swaying gently in time to the melody of the music.

a comrade gifted us a mad dog skullcap seedling, which i just trimmed to encourage bushy growth. as i trim it over the season I'll add the cuttings to this jar to make a strong homemade tincture. medium is bottom shelf vodka, probably 190 proof.
skullcap in my experience is excellent for racing thoughts, both at bedtime and during times of anxiety.

BLOODFIRE FALLS, INFERNIUS
Khazaan pulled his axe from the head of the unfortunate beast the Crimson Skulls had dragged from the Chaos Wastes to duel him. It had been a short battle, unfulfilling, like the dozens before it.
“Another.” Bellowed the Blood Daemon and, obediently, the marauders obeyed. The Bloodthirster snatched his skull cup from the mortal he had designated his cup-bearer, drinking deeply of it’s contents. This realm was light on challenges. He was barely bleeding, half-sober, and still every beast mutated and not fell before his axe.
Several times, his eyes would flick over to Z’ruhgl’s prison and he’d have to quash the urge to release and duel the old Bloodthirster. There would be consequences for that. If only the old dog hadn’t been tied down so tightly! If only he could wiggle free on his own. Then Khazaan would have no choice, his claw would be forced, he would be compelled to obey his brother-Lord’s orders.
A scream split the sky, mixed with the grunts of men and the rattling of thick chains. Khazaan all but tossed his skullcap to his cup-bearer, winding the poor mortal he hit with it. Another beast-- bigger and nastier. Hopefully, that meant a challenge worthy of his axe. Spinning the weapon in his hand, the Gore Gorger felt hopeful....and then he caught the scent of his brother on the wind.
Against the dark sky came a darker shape, gliding towards them. Instantly, the Tippler scented the bloodlust that wafted off of his brother.  The blue-eyed Bloodthirster landed...directly on the beast he was meaning to duel, splattering all assembled liberally in it’s blood.
Khazaan fixed him with an unamused look (that had been his entertainment, dammit), but it died away when he caught Kha'xanzyr’s own. He saw the bright glow of the Architects eyes and the blood-stained whites of a jagged grin. The taller daemon practically marched up to Khazaan, seizing his horn as he spoke.
“ I’ve seen it! I’ve seen it!” He said to Khazaan, then to the surrounding mix of mortals of daemon, “The sky bleeds red in the Chaos Waste! The Blood God acknowledges the killing we do in his name against the hated pleasure daemons!” He raised his axe as he announced it and as he did, the Crimson Skull host raised their voices in furious pride. Kha’xanzyr shook his brother as he spoke, never once releasing that horn.
“ The Blood God has spoken! He has given us his blessing to March South and claim the head of the traitorous cur known as Skarbrand, the Wrathful Reaper.”
Tumblr media
“ And when that task is complete, the Blood God will bless us all! BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!”
The warriors answered in kind, quickly preparing for the journey South. Kha’xanzyr finally let Khazaan go. The pair looked to Z’rughl.
“ Prepare him. But keep his maw and claws bound.” Whatever rageful madness the Keeper had induced in the Brassbound had no yet left him, but no matter. The Bloodthirster could still be useful in a myriad of ways...

This whole week my family have been wondering about a local tiny little purple wildflower that’s been coming up, because it looks a lot like a mint but doesn’t smell like mint and we didn’t recognize it. Well, I finally looked it up, and not only is it a member of the mint family, its name is fuckin.

MAD DOGS & A HEADY SEDATION A traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of a variety of ailments, skullcap has also been used in North America to treat rabies (where it has a common name of 'mad-dog skullcap'). Recreationally, it is usually consumed as tea, although smoking is far from uncommon.
I tested via both approaches, with each providing a heady sedation. Contrary to most reports, I found that smoking had a more intense effect, although this could have been linked to the age of my particular sample.
Note that the effects continued into the night, with sleep having the same heady quality to it.
Finally, bear in mind that there are a number of varieties of scutellaria, carrying different levels of potency.

Of Rest + Worth: Skullcap Plant Profile
Tumblr media
September 30, 2020  /  Alexis J. Cunningfolk
The two nervines - those plants that help bring the nervous system into balance - that I use the most are Milky Oat (Avena Sativa) and Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora). Nervines are an essential part of my practice both in my home and in my wider community. In traditional western herbalism they are some of the most accessible and first learned plants that we encounter as students because caring for our nervous system and its vast network of experience and function is foundational to a body as whole and holy philosophy of practice.
Skullcap is always a close friend of mine and a beloved teacher, but I have found myself turning towards them with greater frequency in the past few years and especially since we all began grappling with our most recent global pandemic. They are a generous teacher and are a powerful ally in some of our most modern maladies, so I hope that the following profile on their healing gifts be a source of inspiration to you.
Tumblr media
Skullcap
(Scutellaria lateriflora)
Folk Names : Mad dog weed, madweed, Quaker’s hat or bonnet, blue pimpernel, helmet flower Planet : Moon, Saturn, Mercury, Neptune, Pluto Element : Water, Air Moon Phase : Dark Moon, Full Moon Zodiac Signs : Gemini, Virgo Parts used : Leaf and flower Habitat : Native to North America and Eurasia. Growing conditions : Full sun with plenty of space and not overly rich soil. Collection : Summer, before flowering. Flavour : Bitter Temperature : Cold Moisture : Dry Tissue State : Tense/Restriction, Hot/Excitation Constituents : B vitamins, calcium, potassium, flavonoids, tannin, scutellonin, stearic acid, linoleic acid, oleic acid.
Actions : Anodyne, antibacterial, antispasmodic, astringent, anxiolytic, bitter, brain tonic, cardiotonic, diuretic, febrifuge, vasodilator, hypotensive, nervine, sedative, spinal cord tonic.
Main uses : A powerful and deeply loved nervine within traditional western herbalism, Skullcap restores strength to an overwhelmed nervous system and accompanying symptoms of muscle spasms and nerve pain all while cultivating calm. For nervousness, fear, and a sense of being overwhelmed, Skullcap stimulates the brain to produce more endorphins in the system due to the presence of scutellarin in the plant which becomes scutellarein in the body. The herb is one of my favorite brain tonics as it not only helps us to develop our pathways of mental clarity, but acts deeply on the nervous system to bring about a sense of wellness and peace. In the USA we live in a culture that glorifies overwork (more on that in a minute) and being productive so Skullcap, with its message of balance and developing awareness between what we're thinking and what we're feeling, is an herb that I turn to often in my practice.
Skullcap is an excellent ally for those who suffer from insomnia, especially when there is difficulty shutting off the busy chatter of a restless mind - Skullcap helps promote healthy sleep patterns. Herbalist Thomas Bartram notes that Skullcap is a wonderful nervine "for workaholics compelled to work long hours with resulting mental exhaustion" and I can attest to this again and again not only for myself but for many folks that I work with. (1) The wisdom of Skullcap is that as a teacher they help us to reassess what pressures are appropriate and inappropriate in our work life, helping us to return not only to a state of mental peace but dignity in work as well.
(Am I suggesting that Skullcap is an anti-capitalist ally? Yes, yes I am.)
Tumblr media
The herb can be used for a variety of nervous conditions and imbalances stemming from hyperactivity including ADHD, anxiety, hypertension, nervous exhaustion, hysteria, neuralgia, premenstrual tension, and the effects of withdrawal from caffeine. In general, Skullcap is a gentle ally for supporting folks grappling with addiction withdrawal as well as withdrawal symptoms from tranquilizers and antidepressants. In my experience Skullcap is also an excellent ally to turn to for social media, gaming, and the new forms of online addiction that have emerged in our modern culture. The herb can also be used in general recovery from colds and influenza as well as prolonged periods of stress.
I use it for cases of fear, including nightmares, and the herb has a balancing effect on energy and emotions, helping both pass unhindered and appropriately through the body. Indicators for Skullcap include the collapse of the ability to hide nervous tension - folks are just not able to keep from the world their fears and anxieties which only makes them more fearful and anxious. Skullcap folk have a particular gift for embodying their thoughts, dreams, and possibilities but that means they can get caught up in the abstract and struggle with being in their bodies. Daily small doses of the herb over many months can be a helpful reset and support a return to embodiment.
Skullcap can also be used in recovery from too much sun exposure, for indigestion with the presence of gas such as in the case of a nervous stomach, for headaches and dizziness, for fevers and colds. Irritability is a big indicator for the use of Skullcap as the plant helps us to release the build-up of frustration. There are not many traditional topical uses for Skullcap that I've come across but I do add the herb to anxiety and stress alleviating bath blends.
Tumblr media
Magickal uses : Skullcap is an herb of oaths and binding contracts from business agreements to romantic unions. The herb is worn by lovers to ensure fidelity. Just as the herb is used to calm nervous conditions in the body, Skullcap can be used in rituals and spells for promoting peace and calm. During trancework, journeying, and astral projection, Skullcap helps keep the spirit secured to the body so that it is able to find its way back after the journey. The herb can also be used to help people ground in any situation, but especially post-meditation or after waking up from an intense dream or nightmare. Skullcap has an affinity for the Autumn Equinox, helping us transition from the bright half of the year to the dark half.
The Skullcap Personality : The Skullcap personality is easy to spot – they are intense, their muscles tense, and they are prone to overthinking. Often, their brow is furrowed, even when they are young children, intensely occupied in thought and their inner worlds. Energetic and quick, they can appear restless or overactive, which they sometimes are, but for Skullcap folk they are purposefully busy and often happily, if very quickly, engaged with whatever project or imaginative game they are pursuing. These are kids who enjoy problem solving in their play - whether puzzles or saving the galaxy from certain doom - but if they do tend towards more nervous energy and fears even if they appear brave and confident in their play and relationships. Skullcap folks can have a hard time feeling present in their bodies and can experience moments of disorientation whether dizzy spells or struggling to find their physical edges. They have to be very careful about frequent burnout and making sure that they take regular time off from their intense periods of thinking and doing The great gift of Skullcap folk is that they have an incredible capacity to remain focused on the theoretical, impossible, and seemingly unattainable, bringing all into the range of accessibility for themselves and their community. Skullcap helps them to access the balance necessary to help save the galaxy and also get enough rest.
Contraindications : Contraindicated during pregnancy. Dosage : 3 – 10 drops up to 3 times daily of a 1:5 alcohol extract. 1 teaspoon of herb per cup of water. Small doses are quite effective and recommended with Skullcap.
Recipe : My Favorite Tea for Easy Evenings + Self-Care

Notes & lyrics:
(Note: these lyrics are directly transcribed out of the audio and i’m going off my memory, so there may be inaccuracies.)
[Hermes walks out onto the main stage from his station on stage right (our left). Eurydice and Orpheus come out as well from stage left. The Workers are gathered on the platforms on stage right; the Fates are at their station at the bar.]
ORPHEUS What is it?
HERMES Well, the good news is, he said that you can go.
ORPHEUS He did?
WORKERS He did...
HERMES He did. There’s bad news, though.
EURYDICE What is it?
[Hermes takes a seat on stool on center stage from Hades in Hiss Kiss, the Riot. The turntable under him turns very, very slowly. Hermes faces away from them.]
HERMES You can walk, but it won’t be like you planned.
ORPHEUS What do you mean?
EURYDICE Why not?
HERMES Well, you won’t be hand in hand. You won’t be arm in arm, side by side, and all of that. He said you have to walk in front, and she has to walk in back.
ORPHEUS Why--?
HERMES And if you turn around to make sure she’s coming too, then she goes back to Hadestown, and ain’t nothing you can do.
EURYDICE But why--?
[Hermes stands up and faces them.]
HERMES Why build walls? Make folks walk single file?
[He gestures with a pointed finger at the ceiling.]
“Divide and conquer” ‘s what it’s called.
ORPHEUS It’s a trap.
HERMES It’s a trial. Do you trust each other? Do you trust yourselves?
[They nod at each other.]
ORPHEUS & EURYDICE We do.
HERMES Well, listen, brother: if you want to walk out of hell... you’re gonna have to prove it. Before gods, and men. Can you do that?
ORPHEUS & EURYDICE We can.
HERMES ‘Aight, time to go.
[Eurydice walks off stage left; Orpheus approaches Hermes.]
ORPHEUS Mr. Hermes.
HERMES Yes?
ORPHEUS It’s not a trick?
HERMES No. It’s a test.
[The lights turn light blue.]
The meanest dog you will ever meet It ain't the hound dog in the street He bares some teeth and tears some skin but brother, That's the worst of him The dog you really got to dread is the one that howls inside your head It's him whose howling drives men mad
[Orpheus and Eurydice move down to downstage center stage, facing the audience. They stand side by side, not far but not close.]
And a mind to its undoing
[Hermes points at the back of Orpheus’ head.]
ORPHEUS & EURYDICE Wait for me, I’m comin’ Wait, I’m comin’ with you Wait for me, I’m comin’ too, I’m comin’ too.
[They embrace.]
WORKERS Show the way so we can see Show the way the world could be
[They turn to the Workers gathered on the platform on stage left, their skullcaps absent. Persephone steps down onto the main stage.]
If you can do it, so can she If she can do it, so can we
ORPHEUS & EURYDICE Show the way!
WORKERS Show the way the world could be Show the way so we believe We will follow where you lead We will follow if you show the way
[Persephone and Hades step out downstage center stage. The turntable’s rings begin to spin slowly. Orpheus and Eurydice break apart; they hold hands a last time before he walks out of the line of attention to stage right, then riding the turntable’s outer ring. All the Workers and Fates step down and watch.]
PERSEPHONE You think they’ll make it?
HADES I don’t know.
WORKERS Show the way
PERSEPHONE Hades. You let them go.
WORKERS Show the way
HADES I let them try.
PERSEPHONE ... And how ‘bout you and I?
WORKERS Show the way
PERSEPHONE Are we gonna try again?
WORKERS Show the way
HADES ... It’s time for spring. We’ll try again next fall.
PERSEPHONE Wait for me?
HADES I will.
[Hades gives Persephone the flower; they separate. Hades shakes Orpheus’ hands before exiting.]
ORPHEUS & EURYDICE & COMPANY Wait for me, I’m comin’ Wait, I’m comin’ with you Wait for me, I’m comin’ too, I’m comin’ too.
[The lights dim except on center downstage, where Orpheus is slowly walking along the turntable and keeping pace. The lights are a light gold--same as their lanterns. The Fates pass by him as he keeps his head low.]
FATES Who are you? Who do you think you are? Who are you? Who are you to lead her?
Who are you to lead them? Who are you to think that you can hold your head up higher Than your fellow man?
[The light turns sky blue on the main stage. The factory lamps burn dim. The Workers, Hermes, Eurydice, and Persephone all watch him; the Fates move out of the main stage. All but Hermes move in place a stepping march; the turntable picks up a bit of speed.]
HERMES You got a lonesome road to walk And it ain't along the railroad tracks It ain't along the blacktop tar you walked a hundred times before I'll tell you where the real road lies Between your ears, behind your eyes That is the path to paradise And likewise the road to ruin
[The lights pulse and glow, especially the golden factory lamps, in time with the lyrics. Hope touches everyone’s eyes, including Hermes, though he is quiet and resigned.]
ALL Wait for me, I’m comin’ Wait, I’m comin’ with you Wait for me, (Wait, I’m comin’,) I’m comin’ too, I’m comin’ too
[The turntable slows. There’s a moment of awe; the march stops and they reach for him, hopeful.]
Wait for me, I’m comin’ Wait, I’m comin’ with you Wait for me Wait, I’m comin’...
[The turntable returns to speed and the march picks up; Eurydice hops onto the turntable, following behind Orpheus, who already looks nervous.]
WORKERS Show the way
EURYDICE¹ I’m comin’, wait for me
WORKERS Show the way
EURYDICE I hear the walls repeating
WORKERS Show the way
EURYDICE The fallin’ of our feet, and
EURYDICE & WORKERS It sounds like drummin’
[The workers gather onto the center turntable behind Hermes and Persephone.]
WORKERS Show the way
EURYDICE And we are not alone
WORKERS Show the way
EURYDICE I hear the rocks and stones
WORKERS Show the way
EURYDICE & COMPANY Echoin’ our song
(cascading) I’m comin’!
[The center turntable sinks down, bringing the Workers, Hermes, and Persephone out.
All lights turn off; the stage is nearly pitch black.]
¹ When I saw Reeve at the stage door, he mentioned that Eva was recovering from laryngitis at this time.

Skullcap (Scullcap) Made Use Of For Sleeplessness, Stress, Muscle Spasms, Exhaustion and also Even more
Mad-dog skullcap was the historic name for this native seasonal herb, an early folk remedy for rabies. The name skullcap originates from the blossoms, which resemble a sort of army headgear worn during the early american duration, when Europeans were learning of as well as calling most indigenous natural herbs. The category name, Scutellaria, originates from the Latin definition "drinking growl," a shape comparable to a skullcap; and lateriflora, the types name, means "flowering on the side."
