Why Naruto failed as Hokage
I'm finally diving into one of my favorite series! Unfornately it's concerning a topic that doesn't paint the main character is the best light. Naruto Uzumaki is actually one of my favorite characters and when it comes to this it's more complex an argument that you would initially think as it all boils down to things just not being in his control and other priorities as well.
So why do I think Naruto has failed as Hokage? He hasn't done anything to fix the corrupt shinobi system he was born into and the five kage alliance he is now apart of is fickle. The most evidence we have of this or at least to my knowledge is in Shikamaru's light novel. In Shikamaru shinden, the Land of Flowers is about to be invaded by the land of earth on the orders of the Earth Daiymo. Due to the relations of the Hidden cloud village and Land of Flowers, it wouldn't be feasible to due this without their being or expecting conflict.
This invasion would be the precipice to starting the fifth great shinobi war, which Shikamaru foresaw. A five kage summit would before anything extreme were to happen and after the Tsuchikage would make extreme demands from Naruto, wanting all of the classified information Konoha possessed because of the actions of Sasuke Uchiha.
During this Five Kage summit, a suspicious Shikamaru's fears are confirmed when Chojuro (Mizukage) , who's on the side of the Tsuchikage Interjects and Says a world without conflict has no need for Shinobi. This causes Shikamaru to restrain every Kage in the room with his Shadow Possession jutsu and before any more action is taken Naruto puts a stop to everything with his extreme power.
This treaty between the Kage is feeble and can be broken easily under the right circumstances. It's clear the only thing keeping a hold on the treaty is Power Imbalance, Mutual Interest (when involved), and mutual threats such as the Otsutsuki Clan. There is no true peace in Naruto Era as Hokage and the shinobi system is still the same as it's always been as in the same novel Shikamaru would visit Ohnoki and he tells Shikamaru...Shinobi are Shinobi.
The shinobi system was designed to protect children and clans from dying in meaningless wars but as we know this was just never the case; when the shinobi village were established there were 4 great Ninja wars with the deaths of many children and the eradication of many clans along the way IE Uchiha Massacre which was done by one of it's own kind because of his belief within the Shinobi system and undying Loyalty to Konoha and the Uzumaki Massacre, which 4 great villages acted together just to see them disappear.
This all leads up to Boruto and how eventually even Naruto's son embodies the will of the corrupt shinobi system that Naruto failed to change. After Sasuke tells Boruto he and Naruto are willing to die for the village at any time...Boruto would willingly give his life to protect everyone....a decision he should've never had to make. With all of these reason's this is how Naruto failed as Hokage.
Naruto's main foes such as Nagato, Obito, Madara, and Sasuke all had plans to change the shinobi world and get rid of the Karmic cycle that dwelled within it, although the means to doing so was not good at all, they had answers nonetheless. Naruto was too idealistic and believed in the words of his former master Jiraiya wthout ever truly coming to an answer....just as when Nagato asked Naruto how would he bring peace and rid the shinobi world of its hatred. Naruto says he doesn't know, that he doesn't have an answer.
And we see in Boruto... he still doesn't.
Watch my video for my full thoughts on the matter. Thank you!

it's been an age since i've been into naruto, and now that i have plans on making my own version on how naruto shippuden ended, i was wondering, how do you think naruto shippuden should've ended? like are you pro or anti naruhina? pro or anti sasusaku? whats your opinions on how the fourth war was played out? if you already spoke about this i'm sorry lol but im just wondering.
OMG HIIIIIIII @ofrolysdogs you're one of my OGs! How have you been????? Please please tag me or let me know once you create your rework. that sounds so intriguing!
This post is gonna be controversial, beauties.
How do you think Naruto Shippuden should've ended?
Ideally, with Naruto realizing that he doesn't need to become hokage to get the attention and validation from the people he loves and cares about. Or at the very least, with Naruto becoming hokage but abolishing the shinobi system. Maybe even make Danzo hokage along the way, just when Tsunade falls into her coma, and slowly make Naruto question the system more and more. Also, Sasuke's whole "redemption" arc should have been handled differently. First and foremost, he was a victim. He did a few things that were wrong, and I agree that there need to be consequences, but for this redemption arc I'd rather have him travel around and teach people around the world about the customs and culture of the Uchiha.
Are you pro or anti naruhina? pro or anti sasusaku?
I am both Anti NaruHina and Anti SasuSaku, but for two different reasons. I used to be a hardcore SNS shipper, but not so much nowadays. NaruHina had so much potential, they could have explored their class and privilege differences together, learning from each other and stuff. But Neji dying for their ship to sail? That was a hate crime. The reason I'm Anti SasuSaku is because I simply don't really like the thought of shipping Sasuke with anyone. He has enough to go through and putting him in a romantic relationship is not something that would make it more interesting or add stakes to it, although I wouldn't mind seeing him adopt a kid or two, given how family oriented Sasuke is.
Whats your opinions on how the fourth war was played out? I found the use of Edo tensei very interesting, albeit a little cheapened here and there. The Itachi and Sasuke vs Kabuto fight was a little disappointing. Don't get me wrong, I loved seeing he two of them fight together side by side, and Itachi's final parting was very touching - but them fighting Kabuto of all people? Maybe if Kishi fleshed out Kabuto's story a little more, he clearly had no idea what to do with him. Poor bastard.
Madara just 'knowing' the hand signs of edo tensei is actually not so unlikely, but it still irks me how he was able to just "come back" when Edo Tensei was released.
And let's not talk about the power scaling, which went completely through the roof in the end. Oof. Kaguya, as is, ruined the storyline completely. It could have worked, but not in the way it was executed in shippuden.
But alas, I suppose there is only so much Kishi can do within the confines of a genre.

by the pricking of my thumbs, Izuna & Shikako, something about divinity and debts? Shikako inadvertently saves his life and he believes he has a new mission in life to serve the random goddess who spared his life?
Okay, here’s the thing anon, you KNOW I love burgeoning young god, divine shenanigans with Shikako. You KNOW this and are PLAYING WITH MY HEART!
But I think, given the way Izuna days and how critical he/his death are in the lingering resentment/tensions between the Uchiha and Senju, that IF Shikako is going to save his life, it wouldn’t be inadvertently. Or, the closest to “inadvertently” would be if she doesn’t realize WHOSE life she is specifically saving.
Like, here’s what I’m picturing in my head:
Tobirama does a near-fatal blow against Izuna. At this point in history, the only people who COULD heal him are Senju.
I don’t know how swiftly the battlefield is emptied, or if Madara was also in that same fight, but there might be a window of time in which no one but the (presumed) dead are on the battlefield. If, in that window, Shikako senses that one of the bodies is not dead YET then she would go in and heal said body.
When Izuna opens his eyes after being certain he was dead, the first thing he sees is the face of a goddess. His Sharingan evolves.
Izuna is the first Uchiha (in this world, at least) to gain the Shikabane-hime and Gelel techniques.
If he has anything to say about it, he will not be the last.
Then it gets into, like, sort of silly shenanigans in which Izuna is earnestly preaching about the goddess he serves who brought him back to life, and Shikako is just like. Pls, no. Pls don’t. Pls. I don’t want that. (Izuna has better persuasion checks than Shikako. Though to be fair, her DC is much higher than his)
At some point, I guess she just leans into it and is like. I MIGHT AS WELL MAKE SURE KONOHA IS BUILT PROPERLY INSTEAD OF IT BEING FULL OF SECRETS AND TENSIONS AND TRAPS THAT BITE EVERYONE IN THE ASS DECADES LATER
… I wonder what the Shikabane-hime and Gelel techniques are…
This does then get into, like… and it sucks that this is the way it’s phrased, but it literally is this: Church vs State in which Izuna is leader of the Church of Shikabane-hime and Tobirama is doing most of the legislative/administrative work for State while his brother is charismatically Hokage-ing it up elsewhere.
And, like, Tobirama is Shikako’s favorite and he is a fuinjutsu master and he is doing SO MUCH WORK FOR THE SAKE OF KONOHA, EVEN IF SOMETIMES IT HAS TERRIBLE REPERCUSSIONS IF THE WRONG PERSON TAKES HOLD OF CERTAIN ORGANIZATIONS. And she also wants to assert, again, that she is not a goddess.
Unfortunately, her status as a divine being IS the only thing Izuna and Tobirama agree on. Tobirama just doesn’t think the Church of Shikabane-hime needs it’s own Vatican-style independent district within Konoha.
“Of course the temple will be central to the design of the village,” Tobirama says, a rough sketch of what buildings need to be prioritized on top of a survey map of the land that would one day become Konoha. He says it so matter of factly that Shikako almost misses it. “What?” Shikako asks, confused. “Of course it must be the center of the village,” Izuna snaps, even though they are literally in agreement. “It must also be the tallest building in the village.” “What?” Shikako asks, concerned. “Of course,” Tobirama retorts even though, again, they are literally in agreement.
Like… Tobirama does totally believe Shikako is a goddess. So many of his techniques are god adjacent (Thunder God—both sword and Hiraishin—and then the Edo Tensei/summoning shinigami maybe) that he doesn’t mind that. He just thinks that Izuna shouldn’t be so cocky just because he saw her first and got a cool new technique because of his cheating eyes while Tobirama has to do MATH and figure out how to bend the laws of the universe via fuinjutsu in order to get a Shikabane-hime technique. It’s not fair.
Also, Konoha LITERALLY having a goddess bless/guide the creation of their village is VERY POWERFUL. So giving Izuna a separate district for the Church of Shikabane-hime instead of incorporating Shikabane-hime into Konoha's very foundations does make that good PR a little less powerful.
I’m not saying Konoha becomes a holy city. But… like… maybe?

I just want to say something about Kakashi and the fact that he never lashes out against the system or tried to fix it himself.
Something i’ve seen him compared to is Gojo who states he ‘could kill all the higher ups’ but i think a lot of people forget that he also says ‘nothing would change’ (which is funny to me because i saw the manga shot once and remembered it and i don’t watch JJK)
Tumblr media
There’s a few reason’s this doesn’t work for Kakashi
1) OG Kakashi couldn’t do that.
Kakashi in OG Naruto wasn’t on par with Hiruzen. He’d lose that fight. Yes he’s an assassine but Hiruzen is a Hokage level shinobi.
He’s not going to be snuck up on that easy and in a 1 vs 1 battle Og Kakashi is not winning. War arc or Hokage Kakashi might win, but not OG Kakashi. He still has a lot of growing to do in his skills.
2) as Gojo said, nothing would change
If Kakashi could and did kill Hiruzen, then what? Tsunade maybe gets convonced to take the job or Danzo gets it. Kakashi ends up a Rogue Ninja away from all his friends, painted as the bad guy for trying to in-force his beliefs over everyone?
Gai is on par with Kakashi. Maybe he could take the rest of Konoha but Gai, Jiraiya (if he’s there), Tsunade (if she’s there)
Like, they’d all probably turn on him and try to kill him. He wouldn’t be there hero. No one would be throwing him parties.
He’d be the bad guy in everyone’s eyes.
This man has lost so much that i think that would shatter him. He wouldn’t have any more will to fight ir change shit. His will to fight the system is already so broken even when we see him go against orders.
3) it doesn’t match Kakashi’s established ‘style’
Kakashi isn’t someone who does things alone. His main motto is teamwork.
If Kakashi were to go against the system and try to change it, he’d do it with his friends. He’d convince them that the system is broken (or maybe they realize themselves like Gai) and that they need to change it.
He’d probably avoid killing.
Kakashi was an assassine but as soon as he gained power he changed the law so instead of killing enemies shinobi were to capture them.
If Kakashi can think of a way to do things without killing, he will. Everyone has a different answer to changing things (Sasuke=kill everyone, Obito & madara= eternal dream, Nagato = making everyone else suffer). Kakashi’s answer is peaceful solution where there can be one.
4) that’s not the point of this story
Naruto wants to be Hokage. Do i think he should have changed and recognized the system? Yes. But that’s not how Kishi wrote it.
In Kishi’s story as we read it, anyone directly against the system is bad no matter what their solution. Zabuza is bad until he ‘changes his mind before death’, Obito is bad until he switches side, Sasuke is bad until Naruto ‘convinces him’)
Kishi would only write Kakashi lashing out directly against the system if he wanted to make Kakashi into a bad guy in his story. Since Kakashi is one of his good guys, he had him silently and slowly changing the system with his own actions and teachings.
Kishi simply didn’t write Kakashi being against the syatem in the same way the JJK author wrote Gojo being against the system because his world is very black and white. Good and bad. (Even though Gojo’s solution is the exact same as Kakashi’s).
Kakashi is a character i believe should have been more against the current system, demanding change because he has lost so much to that system. But that’s simply not the character Kishi wrote.
Edit: may I add this man would absolutely go to bat for his students. He defied Hiruzen to save Tenzo from Danzo. He tell’s his student’s to always put their teammates before their mission and that extebds to putting his precious people over the village if he has to.

How did the Huyga Clan get in Konoha? Did Hashirama, Tobirama, Madara and others not know about the whole, them enslaving their own people, or did they just not care? Or did the Hyuga Clan somehow kept it a secret for years and then everyone found out during the Chunin Exams in the Neji vs Naruto fight? I just don't understand... Did they pay a handsome price to make the hokage and others in charge look the other way?

The true reason why Itachi was right/justified - The best answer
https://youtu.be/9vxHV5mg6JM - This is a video I also made on the subject that breaks it down even further and explains my points much more easily and I'd appreciate it if you watched and gave me some feed back on not only my argument but video production as well
BUT for the reddit short version. A few days ago I made a post that seemed to take off in the sub about Itachi and it didn't have anything to do with whether he was right or wrong in his decision in massacring his clan but unsurprisingly that's what it led to and the opinions like always are very mixed but people have extremely poor arguments on both sides and more often than not let their own world view and emotions come into their decision making when it should in fact be viewed from the not only the world the Naruto universe is, mainly Konoha, but also their world as a whole, also who Itachi and why he holds the views he does and ultimately why he did what he did that night.
There's this misconception that Itachi is stupid or that he made the wrong choice because he's blood related to his clan, that the clan is his family and no matter what the result is that he should stand with them and fight against Konoha and even worse there are people who believe that the Uchiha clan can even win that battle in the first place. First and foremost, even if Uchiha had a chance to rebel they would get completely annihilated by the rest of Konoha shinobi, there's just too much riding against them but that's not to say that Konoha wouldn't have taken any major damage to Konoha and their forces; facing the Uchiha clan would definitely be an hard battle but in the end they are one clan vs many other clans such as Hyuga, Aburame, Akimichi, Nara, etc and other notable shinobi from Konoha such as Kakashi, a Younger Hiruzen, Danzo, Guy, Asuma, Kurenai, etc; they're not winning that battle and it's foolish to think otherwise.
That's not the main point but that plays into the next point. It's not about winning the battle against Konoha for Itachi, It's about the damage and domino effect it would cause. As said in the story a civil war of that magnitude breaking out in the leaf would surely cause severe damage and a great amount of casualties to not only the leaf but non shinobi as well. That damage would be a cause for concern because other nations would take advantage of the instability within the Konoha and attack, potentially destroying Konoha entirely and that's a high possibility especially when you look at relations of other villages with Konoha, especially the Cloud Village who are almost rivaling Konoha in power and to add on to that Konoha and Cloud didn't have the best relations during the time frame pre-4th great shinobi war; considering they tried to kidnap Kushina and Hinata. During the Kidnapping of Hinata, her father actually killed the Cloud ninja which resulted in his brother sacrificing himself, so to say their relations weren't great would be an understatement.
Itachi also adopted the will of fire and being a part of the anbu held it to a deeper extent but he also craved for peace among all else in his village because of the 3rd great shinobi war he was exposed to at the age of 4. He never wanted to experience anything like that again, especially within his village, that could lead to an even greater conflict and war. Itachi loved his family but he also loved his village, the village is also Itachi's family, remembering Hiruzen said Itachi thought like a Hokage at the age of 7 and that's the Hokage's mentality. The Hokage also possess the will of fire being the leader of their village it's unsurprising.
What is the will of fire? The Will of Fire is the notion that one must sacrifice and endure, that's what it means to be a shinobi, and sacrifice no matter what it is, if it leads to the greater good of the village then it was worth. That is the Will of Fire . As Hashirama said after killing Madara he's willing to kill his friend, family and even his own child if it's for the greater good of the village. This is literally Itachi's mindset. He loves his family dearly and he also loves his village but he knows that the village is more than his family. The village is his family as well and a larger portion at that. The Hokage looks at the entire village as their family, there are several references to Itachi being Hokage like, by Hiruzen, Danzo, Hashirama, and Sasuke. Remember what Minato said (also an Hokage) "To forsake one's country and one's village is the same as forsaking one's child", He says this to a dying Kushina about Naruto after sacrificing his son's upbringing for what? THE VILLAGE.
It's because of Itachi's experiences that he is this way and being in the anbu made him adopt it the Will of Fire to a further extent, as we know the anbu pretty much radicalize the Will of Fire to the most extreme level and are willing to do ANYTHING for the village, especially the anbu that take orders from who? You guessed it. DANZO. Who gave Itachi that choice? DANZO. Danzo knew Itachi's heart, while he spoke to Itachi in a manipulative tone, everything Danzo said was in fact true. and his actions are justified because there's are the actions a shinobi is supposed to take. Starting from the very first Hokage. This is why he is praised by Hashirama for being a better shinobi than him. This is how the Naruto world is and how it this question should be looked at.
Thank you for coming to my ted talk.
youtube
I got even more in depth in my video and actually touch on the themes of morality and ethics and this is all from the view of the Naruto universe and not our own. I feel like it's the best explanation of Itachi because there's no personal biases and just straight facts, but as always when it comes to such a topic, I know answers vary but Im ready and willing to argue any point.

Hi! I'm new on your blog, so I'm sorry if you've already said something abt this X'D
What is your opinion about the Uchiha Clan Massacre and Itachi by an extent?
Hey, I'm new on my blog as well ಠ‿ಠ
The massacre obviously shouldn't have happened, it only happened bc of the slow and gradual simmering tension over the course of several decades, like tobito explained to sauce after the Itachi vs sasuke fight. It's not like the coup came out of nowhere, it's just that the hokage failed to recognize the uchiha's diminishing tolerance for their treatment.
The reason why danzo went straight to plan z though was bc of his own personal prejudice against the Uchiha, and the 3rd hokage sorta just let him do whatever. He was just using the whole "I will do anything to protect the village" excuse just to pretend he was being noble. Tobirama's influence also played a huge part, with the police force and the gradual isolation of the Uchiha.
Less of a popular opinion, hashirama also played a significant (though more indirect) role in the massacre as well. His whole "will of fire" philosophy (remember that was created out of him killing Madara, an Uchiha who was concerned by the eventual ostracization of his clan) gave rise to an exclusionist government that became willing to cut off parts of itself to protect the whole (which gave rise to people like danzo).
Itachi. I have mixed feelings. I feel like people tend to be extremely polarized on the subject, like anyone who cares Abt his character either loves him to death and sees him as a tragic hero or hates him and sees him as the government's lil pet. Tbh I lean more towards liking him. He really was just a kid who, after witnessing the 3rd war, just wanted to keep the peace, which made him willing to do ANYTHING to prevent another war. But it got to the point where he'd kill his own family for that. I think he's actually kinda similar to hashirama in this way, bc both of them were so scarred by war that they turned to any means in order to protect the peace they wanted to achieve, including killing their loved ones. Also, danzo had blackmailed Itachi. He told him that if leaf Shinobi were to carry out the genocide, sauce would develop hatred towards the leaf, and then he would have to be killed off as well. Obviously, Itachi chose the option that would keep his most important person alive (I mean, it's kind of a no brainer, since his two shitty options were "kill everyone except your brother," or "let leaf Shinobi kill everyone including your brother"). It's not like Itachi was swimming in decisions. But again, looking at the influence and trauma that the 3rd war had on him, if he hadn't learned the horrors of war at such a young age, I think he would've been less inclined to take danzo's deal as the ONLY option available. He would've been less scared of a conflict breaking out, a conflict that even though would've resulted in a lot of death, could've eventually turned into an agreement between the village and the Uchiha. But because he was so strongly against war, he never gave it a chance. Given the circumstances, he made the best possible choice his lil thirteen year old brain could muster.
I also sort of want to talk Abt Itachi's treatment of sauce, because I do find it particularly interesting. Itachi objectifies Sasuke a lot, as in, he views Sasuke not as his own person, but more like an object to influence/protect. It is in an effort to protect him, but he tries to subtly manipulate Sasuke down a certain path that as we know, backfires HORRIBLY. While he manipulates him, he simultaneously hides information from him as well. He doesn't trust Sasuke to make his own decisions. Even the way he talks Abt him sometimes, like when he talks to Naruto (in the tsukuyomi), "Sasuke is a blank canvas, he can be dyed into any color. (Dub). That wording to me felt very... off. It's clear Itachi doesn't view Sasuke as a full human being with his own motivations or tendencies. Though I am happy that this gets resolved once Itachi gets Edo tensei'ed and they fight Kabuto. He finally lets Sasuke be his own person and just lets him know that he'll love him no matter what happens/whatever Sasuke chooses to do. So generally, I do think Itachi's a pretty good character. He definitely shouldn't be glorified or victimized or hated on as much as he is, but I appreciate the complexity of his character.

your thoughts on obitoxfem kks also give me some headconan
I love them just as much as I love Madara x Fem!Hashirama (vice versa) and Gaara x Fem!Naruto!
I think genderbender pairs are underrated, and they have an amazing charm to them.
Anyways, let's get to the headcanons, which is in the canon au (some angst ahead):
It's a complete love/hate relationship. Know-it-all girl vs Boy who wants to beat the know-it-all in everything.
Fem!Kakashi sort of developed a small crush on Obito when they were younger, but she was the type that was avoidant, and was too afraid of being vulnerable. She had a habit of denying her feelings and burying them inside.
While Obito tends to always challenge her or rub at her face some of his achievements, he finds himself reaching out to fem!Kakashi whenever he sees her brooding or sitting alone. He tends to just hang around and talk to her about anything, just to wipe off the sad or grim expression she often wears.
Fem!Kakashi finds herself feeling irritated when she sees Obito giving his attention to Rin, and this would be the first time she admits that she actually really likes the attention he gives her, even if he's being annoying or consistently challenging her.
When Obito hurts himself, fem!Kakashi finds herself grumpily reaching over to have a look at his injuries, and takes the gauze or bandage out of Rin's hand to wrap him up, scolding him for being so careless.
The more time she spent around the stubborn Uchiha, the more Kakashi has grown used to his presence, so when he's not around, she would find an excuse to seek him out, whether it's a challenge or to reprimand him, or just to follow him around whenever he's helping an elderly.
The day that Obito got crushed by the boulder, was the day Kakashi cried so hard and told him that there was no team without him. His words about her being an amazing Jounin always rings in her head. His "death" truly devastated her, and she ends up regretting not letting him know of her feelings for him.
You can imagine the shock she feels when Obito is revealed to be the masked man during the war - but that's where her feelings and emotions start to go haywire. During their battle in the Kamui dimension, she wavers in the middle of the fight, knowing that she is unable to kill him no matter what - and Obito takes advantage of that by pulling her closer to him and holding her tightly, showing that he's aware of her feelings for him, and he tells her that "they can have it all" and that they can be together in their own world.
When Obito gets defeated, Kakashi attempts to kill him once more, but when Minato stops her, Kakashi lets out her grief and tears, beating her fists at his chest and scolding him for his ways, telling him that she would've been by his side and he would never have to be alone, and she would be the one to heal the hole in his heart if he let her. Obito looks at her with a pained expression, fully realizing Kakashi's love for him and imagining what it would've been like.
Warning: NSFW
In an AU where they live together and Obito's the Hokage while fem!Kakashi is his wife/lover, they'd have the kinkiest sexual relationship because Kakashi loves to try out the positions and sexual acts that she tends to pick up from Icha Icha Paradise.
She's very protective of Obito and Obito is the most supporting man for her, who loves to show her off and show off that he's married to Konoha's top Jounin protégé.
Fem!Kakashi tends to annoy Obito for attention, because she just loves his reaction.
Pillow talk at night is their favorite.
They tend to argue about whether fem!Kakashi should keep her dogs inside the house or leave them in their summoning dimension.
The Kamui dimension is technically their "sex dungeon" LMAO.
Their favorite quality time is training together and walking fem!Kakashi's dogs. :3
That's all for now!

Are there any battles or fights you would love to see between certain characters?
Maybe Lee vs Gai, in like, a final battle between student and Sensei where at first, Lee uses techniques Gai taught him, but slowly goes into Lee using his own techniques. Becoming less predictable, becoming less of a copy paste of technique and fighting style. Lee becomes his own man, and he's showing Gai exactly that. This happens before the war and Lee moves on to different things. Maybe joining the ANBU or something.
I also think Obito vs Madara in an AU where Obito betrayed Madara and went back to the hidden leaf would be interesting. Like Obito came back after the ninetails attack, got the seal removed by maybe Tsunade, worked his ass off to move up ranks and become Hokage. Meanwhile Madara and the Zetsu are doing all the things Obito did in Canon, probably a little more poorly because Madara's basically halfway in the urn and the Zetsu are just... weirdos. But they do eventually start the fourth ninja war, and I'm thinking just before Madara goes go kill Naruto, in the scene where Obito torments him and kills Neji, Obito appears just in time. Saving both Naruto, Neji and Hinata. He's dressed in his Hokage robes, takes the hat off and puts it on Naruto's head, smiling. He says "This isn't your battle, Naruto. It's mine. Get your friends to safety. And if I don't make it, know that you'll be a great Hokage, and it's been an honour to have you as a comrade." or something like that, and he and Madara have this big fucking fight, Obito gains control of the Tentails and turns it against Madara, Kuro Zetsu tries to possess him by grabbing his arm, but Obito cuts his arm off and sends Kuro to the Kamui dimension (this eventually leads to Obito getting the prosthetic made with Hashirama cells that Sasuke refused if he and Naruto still have their final battle or they lose their arms another way), and Obito defeats Madara in time to join team 7 in fighting Kaguya.

Naruto shippuden things that made me lose my mind (ep 347-365):
Danzo in disguise: I am Kanzo, friend of Hanzo
It makes me feel insane that nagato made the leader of the akatsuki an actual literal corpse
Hiruzen: orochimaru can't be hokage. I sense he's a greedy bitch
Minato looked at kakashi's blossoming suicidal urges and said let's channel that energy into something positive, like becoming a faceless murder machine
An ANBU: Hey, minato, kakashi keeps one shot blasting ppl with chidori. He seems a bit... not good. 3rd hokage @ Minato: Make him guard ur wife from afar. That will keep him from hurting himself but also keep him distant from someone who could help to heal him
Hiruzen (a fucking liar) to dying kushina: sure, I'll protect naruto
Ah now I understand how everyone in the world knows who kakashi is. He never fucking wears his ANBU mask
There is a clan of ppl who turn into smoke and if they got outside they fucking blow away in the wind
OK so tenzo has been twice swallowed by a giant snake
Gai: let me join Root! Danzo: I only employ edgelords
Konoha elders: let us ostracize the eyeball freaks (the uchiha. Not the other eyeball freaks)
Everyone: kakashi is real fucked up, having a set of kids will soften his heart. 3rd hokage: *gives kakashi the most fucked up kids in the whole village* this is a great idea
It's just 2 sad uchiha vs the entire world 🖤
God. I love the way Obito gives Madara the bitchy side eye
Madara abt obliterating the allied shinobi force HQ: yay, they're dead 🤗
And neji's death for hinata is confirmation that in Naruto you truely cannot escape the pull of fate. They are all caged birds and the only escape is death.
