GOOD QUESTION so I feel like Asami goes the more traditional route--sweetie, love, that sort of thing, but sometimes when they're sparring or playing a game she'll call Korra "Avatar" just to get a rise out of her.

I think Korra gets real weird with it, because she loves to make Asami laugh. Think "my crunchy seaweed sprinkle," "my powerful land-Unagi," etc. Asami loves it.

Also. I think Korra likes to play up not knowing anything about cars (partly as a joke between her and Asami, partly because sometimes it gets Asami to crowd up against her and show her how something works. ha ha ha😳) so one time she calls Asami "my 40-cylinder engine" to see if that gets one of those coveted snort-laughs (it does).

I mean, I feel like the comics answer this for me— once they’re together, they’re constantly touching and being affectionate, regardless of the situation, and I LOVE IT. Like them in this courthouse hallway in ROTE?

Korrasami keep your hands off each other for two minutes challenge. They’ve already failed while you were reading that. God. Just something about them both being such badasses and then then being so sweet and soft with each other? I’m going to eat my own hands they’re so in love

56. What do they do turn the other on/put them in the mood?

They’re so into each other, I feel like it doesn’t take much to get either of them going. That being said, they both also love to mess with each other and rile each other up, so that’s when you get the Foreplay Antics. Korra usually starts out more blunt in her tactics but she’s way easier to fluster once things start getting heated. Asami on the other hand will play kinda coy and and unaffected until she can get Korra wound up enough, at which point she’ll usually take a more dominant role and make Korra’s brain melt out of her ears. If you have not read it already, may I humbly suggest this fic by @korrasamibottles for just. The dynamic of all time

I like that because it implies they weren’t just like. Watching him go apeshit on firewood. But it was actually like two against one REALLY testing him to make sure he’s ok. Also “your form is on point” not just against wood but people and dodging arrows too.

So I have said many, many times that Dark magic / mages and Moonshadow assassins in TDP have very similar role placements within TDP’s world, narrative structure, foils, etc. Thus, I thought it was interesting that Sunfire magic provided a kind of false hope for both Rayla’s binding due to death Moon magic and possibly for Callum’s purification.

Rayla binds herself (Moon) and upon regretting the consequences of that initial misguided choice, she seeks out a Sunforge dagger at Callum’s prompting to hopefully help. But it doesn’t work.

She is then saved from her terrible fate through Sky, twice: both through Callum smashing the primal stone (one circular object) and through Zym hatching and biting off her binding (two circular objects). 

Callum, meanwhile, did dark magic because of his lack of access to Sky magic and his desperation to save Rayla.

The Sunforge / Sun primal is the only magical source we’ve seen indicate they can heal or purify / remove dark magic, and it wouldn’t be crazy for it to come back, since the Light ritual could’ve just been a punishment regardless of dark magic use or any hope of purity. The notion of ‘cutting’ and severing a line seems particularly apt since Aaravos’ control is compared to puppet strings as well.

But of course, this can’t work successfully. Following with this theory, Moon magic will then be what saves him, reconciling the dark and light and allowing him to connect / choose another path (Rayla).

Animation Night 185: Scavengers Reign

So...

In distant 2016, Joseph Bennett and Charles Huettner directed a short film titled Scavengers at Titmouse for the 'Toonami' block on American TV channel Adult Swim. The largely wordless short depicts a pretty classic scifi premise - a spacecraft stranded on a lush alien world, the survivors of the crash surviving by interacting with the strange alien lifeforms - with a spectacular amount of style and imagination.

It's an absolute riot of squishy, surreal spec bio: a montage of scenes of extremely weird bugs and little guys being cut up and stuck together and fed to each other for mysterious but somehow logical-feeling reasons. It all feels terribly French in style to my eye - a style that is realist but with simplified faces, impassive expressions, a psychic trip at the end, a trust that we can follow a surreal and wordless story. We could also think of the work of Busifan. Whatever the comparison, this short had a vibe you rarely encounter Stateside.

Nearly a decade later, this show was followed up with a whole series, animated once again by the madlads at Titmouse.

Scavengers Reign drastically expands on the premise of the original short into a 12 episode series, fleshing out the characters and their weird telepathic world as another ship full of crashed survivors attempt to link up with their crewmates, only to be pulled further and further into the strange ecosystem they now inhabit.

Rave reviews on all fronts, so naturally it got cancelled on its original network Max... but was picked up again by Netflix, with the possibility of a second season dangled in front of us if it debuts hard enough. This is exactly the kind of thing I wanna see more of in American animation (or hell, animation in general), so tonight on Animation Night, we'll be taking a a sojourn to the strange planet of Vesta.

16. What's your least favorite ship for this character?

This one's hard because I hate drama and I don't really think any ship is "bad" BUT I can't see Asami/Wu working. They're a "let's get fancy little overpriced drinks and compare the thread counts of our bedsheets" duo. To me. I'm trying to envision them on a date, and the only thing my brain can conjure up is Wu talking a mile a minute about whatever the fuck to keep everyone around them so distracted they don't notice he's gay. Meanwhile Asami's saying absolutely nothing and doing math in her head.

22. If you're a fic reader, what's something you like in fics when it comes to ths character? Something you don't like?

I like when people understand that her personality doesn't begin and end at "rich and pretty," and I really don't like when she's portrayed as a hyperfeminine doormat. Like yeah, she's always wearing makeup and has a tendency to prioritize the needs/feelings of others above her own. She's also happy to get her hands dirty operating and fixing heavy machinery, and isn't afraid to speak her mind and stand her ground when she thinks the situation calls for it.

The curse of being an underdeveloped side character is that there's less material to work with, I'll give people that. But she's more than just "the hot one." She IS hot don't get me wrong, I mean we've all seen her....but that's not the only thing she is. You didn't ask but my spicy take of the day is that if she was a man she'd have novel-length essays analyzing her every word and action, and people would be inventing all sorts of backstories to fill in the blanks left by canon, but since she's a woman people rarely make that effort and just write her off as flat and boring.

13. Do you listen to music while you write?  If yes, what have you been listening to recently?

I usually need some kind of background noise when I write so sometimes it’s music, sometimes a TV show at low volume (shoutout to my bestie Food Network). If it’s music it’s usually something that I feel like fits the tone of the story and more often than not, my fics with lyric titles (almost all of them) were written at least partially while listening to that song. There are a handful of songs that I’m surprised haven’t made it into fic titles yet with how much I’ve listened to them in the background— Want You in My Room by Carly Rae Jepsen and Dive by Victoria Monet are two of the big ones.

25. What’s your favorite part of the writing process (worldbuilding, brainstorming/outlining, writing, editing, etc)?

Idk if this counts but I love when I have a lightbulb moment and suddenly something becomes clear to me after it’s been giving me trouble in the past. It feels so satisfying to figure out!

Hello! This is my first time sending an ask since I’m usually just a lurker, and of course it’d be a long one. 🫠 I was anxious about asking because it’s about old art, but seeing your Grianverse callback post gave me courage lol 

Your art was what first introduced me to Hermitcraft way back in 2020, it was a parody animation of a Garfunkel and Oates song with Grian and Mumbo. The art style was so crisp and shapey and pretty, so I liked it even though I had no clue what the characters were from, lol. Then I realized I had passively heard the name Grian before and decided to check it out, starting with this “Hermitcraft” thing. And so the hyperfixation began, haha. 

I recently got back into Hermitcraft after falling out of it for a while due to new fandom obsessions and generally life happening. I have been really enjoying it, and wanted to rewatch that video for nostalgia’s sake, but I can’t find it so I assume it was privated or deleted.

I was wondering if there was anywhere I could watch it again, but I understand you probably removed it for a reason and I fully respect if you want it to stay in the past; I know people move on from fandoms all the time and don’t really want their old work for it to be public anymore and that’s totally fine. 

Either way, I also wanted to just thank you so much for introducing me to my biggest comfort series. Hermitcraft’s intense wholesomeness and good vibes have helped me feel okay again on some rough nights, and I may have never found it if not for you. Since I’ve rediscovered your art (and am loving the Genshin Impact content, haha), it makes me really happy to see that you’re doing well and still making really cool stuff! 

This genuinely was so sweet to read, I'm so glad I was able to introduce you to Hermitcraft! I still love it and watch it from time to time. Even though I distanced myself from it fandom wise, I still love this series dearly.

I did eventually unlist all my Hermitcraft related content- I was getting into new media at the time and was making fanart for said new interests, but people would constantly ask "but you're not going to stop drawing Hermitcraft right?" or "I miss when you drew Hermitcraft" and it became to much. I just wanted to draw what I was interested in at the time but so many people connected me specifically with Hermitcraft and it was honestly a little exhausting, like I wasn't allowed to branch out into my other interests.

I'm at the point though where I do miss my silly Grianverse babies and would like to draw them all again (wouldn'tmind even trying to draw Mumbo again, love that madlad), so fuck it we ball, so I don't mind putting a link to that video! I'm assuming this is the one you are referring to

lore dump for the Cult of the Neon Blade incoming

Archite Yr’isha got bored of doing normal Hot Wych Shit one day, somehow got her hands on a bunch of ancient Terran sci-fi sports horror vids, and became obsessed with roller derby in particular

a few unsuccessful attempts at styling her arena after this sport later, she gets a very un-Drukhari-like idea, one that, if it works, will be so fucking efficient at extracting pain from hideous little willing mon’keigh, she’ll never have to enslave anyone again

her first few roller rinks of doom suck, and nobody shows up, so she contracts some Slaaneshi Imperial Fists to build the coolest and deadliest one ever

these madlads go above and beyond, and not only build a really cool arena full of death traps, they use the Webway to link it to every world with a sufficiently large and bloodthirsty population so Yr’isha doesn’t even have to go out recruiting; this arena is soon dubbed the Dreadwheel

a few tournament seasons later, the Coven of the Bladed Wheel invades the Dreadwheel, turning injured contestants into biomechanical horrors and muscling their way into being the medics/pit crew of Yr’isha’s games

the Bladed Wheel, in these incidents, created one of the first recurring fighters in the Dreadwheel, Koschei, who’s basically a roller derby version of Frankenstein from Death Race 2000 (except they actually do rebuild him from hamburger; the myth is that he’s just replaced every season)

as of M42, Yr’isha not only enjoys a reasonable amount of fame and fortune in Commorragh, she’s got a criminal network across the Imperium, constantly recruiting fresh meat for the grinder
