So many presents (and a few lumps of coal) are left for the hatchlings!
Goodness, for being so young, you all continue to amaze me! Keep up the great work!
- Santa 🎄
Christmas usually means two things - family and presents.
And in the Dragon Realms, there were lots and lots and lots of family and presents to be found in a single gathering, which meant there was plenty of fun to be had long after Santa left and the thrill of eviscerating wrapping paper wore off.
Each and every last one of these tots scored at least two gifts - something courtesy of Santa, and however many they got from their caretakers.
And boy howdy, did they need him to shoulder some of the burden with so many kids around.
Juggling secret shopping and craftsmanship with decorating and childrearing was not an easy task at a magnanimous scale, on top of all the additional effort that was customary during the Year of the Dragon.
Toys comprised the majority of the babies’ Christmas presents, with close runners-up being Mudada’s stuffed animals and whatever assortment of knitted goods Revilo had whipped up - mostly sweaters. The pair of Dream Weavers were miracle workers when it came to their crafts; their finesse and efficacy could give the Artisans (and perhaps even Santa) a run for their money.
Fittingly, the eponymous dragon faction dedicated the majority of their days to the little ones throughout the leadup to Christmas, helping both their clutches and any visitors from the other clans make decorations, or working in tandem to build toys, predominantly in the form of Nestor putting his carpentry skills to good use and Lindar providing assistance with the mechanisms. If colours were required, Gildas was their man.
And yet somehow, despite all the time and resources that went into personal gifts, there had been enough leftover in the budget for them to provide spare toys that could be kept around in the nurseries for everyone to play with.
Well, maybe the surplus wasn’t entirely unintentional. Kids often necessitated backups and extra precautions.
Suffice to say, there ended up being hundreds and hundreds of gifts altogether.
A handful of them seemed like they’d be more suitable for pets such as chew toys (no matter how often the hatchlings acted like cats and dogs), but were guaranteed to satisfy their teething issues (and discourage them from mauling all the furniture in sight).
The presence of coal amongst all of the toys from Santa had less to do with it being a punishment for naughty little dragons and rather being something that several nutcases legitimately wanted for Christmas.
It made sense in some aspects because coal could serve as materials for aspiring Beast Makers…but not so much in the cases where the concept of black rocks that were given as punishments piqued their interest for whatever reason.
All the tumult that new toys brought couldn’t compare to what unfolded after a handful of bright sparks realised that there were many fun things you can do with coal, including but not limited to setting it on fire and potentially compromising your health over the long term, throwing it at walls and leaving powdery stains everywhere, crushing it up and mixing it with snow to create unholy grey sludge, or making snowmen that either had the perfect black buttons and eyes, yearned for the sweet release of death, or both.
Either way, every last lump had been enchanted to negate any ill effects they could have on the little ones or leave harmful residue anywhere - and the elder dragons were quick to dispose of it once the novelty wore off.

Happy Spyro Community Day everyone!
For the day I decided to draw the Legend Elders as Reingited Elders! Each represents a different homeworld. Ignitus is an Artisan who specializes in Raku fired pottery. Cyrill is an ice mage who lives in the high peaks of Magic Crafters. Terrador is a fierce general who lives in Peace Keepers. Volteer is a Beast Maker who became obsessed with the electric tech the Gnorcs left behind. Finally the Chronicler is a Dreamweaver who specializes in manipulating time and dreams in order to help guide heroes.

Make Your Own Colorful Playdough Adventure! 🌈🎨
╔════════════════ ❀•°❀°•❀ ═════════════════╗
Hey there, little artists and crafters! 🌟 Today, we're going on a magical playdough adventure, and you get to be the master chef of creativity. May need a caregiver to help out, though!
Materials You'll Need:
Flour: This is our magic powder to make the playdough.
Salt: It makes our playdough just perfect.
Warm Water: To bring everything together.
Food Coloring: This will turn your playdough into a rainbow!
Oil: A bit of vegetable oil keeps it soft and squishy.
Magic Sparkles (Glitter): Make your playdough sparkle like a unicorn.
Cookie Cutters: To shape your doughy creations.
Imagination: The most important ingredient!
Let's Get Crafty!
Step 1: Mix the Dry Stuff
In a big bowl, mix 1 cup of flour with 1/2 cup of salt. Stir them together with a big spoon.
Step 2: Add the Wet Magic
Now, add 1/2 cup of warm water and a few drops of food coloring. Mix it all up. Watch the white dough turn into your favorite color! 🌈
Step 3: Keep Mixing!
Time to add a tiny bit of oil (around 1 tablespoon). This will keep your playdough super soft. Mix, mix, mix!
Step 4: Add Some Sparkles!
Who doesn't love a bit of magic? Add some glitter to your playdough. It'll shine and shimmer just like your imagination.
Step 5: Knead the Dough
Take your playdough out of the bowl and knead it on a clean surface. Roll, squish, and shape it. Make whatever your heart desires - animals, stars, or even a playdough ice cream cone! 🍦✨
Step 6: Have Fun!
Now, let your imagination run wild. Create your own magical world with your new playdough friends. What adventures will you go on? 🚀🌟
And that's it! You've made your very own playdough. Store it in an airtight container so it stays squishy and ready for more adventures. Have a squishy, sparkly, and super colorful time! 💖🌈🦄
Remember, there's no right or wrong way to create with playdough. It's all about your imagination and the fun you have while crafting. Enjoy your playdough adventure! 🌈🌟

Legends and myths about trees
Forest myths, Estonian traditional beliefs (5)
The world of the Estonians’ ancestors – Magical objects [first part]
White Ship (valge laev) - mythical ship that brings freedom or takes people away to a better land. This myth was born around 1860 when a small sect led by Juhan Leinberg (also known as Prophet Maltsvet) gathered near Tallinn to wait for a white ship to take them away.
Hat of fingernails (küüntest kübar) - makes the bearer (usually Vanatühi) invisible. In Estonian mythology, Vanatühi ("Old empty one", or alternatively, Vanapagan, "Old devil") is a/the devil or god of the underworld, a giant farmer who is more stupid than malevolent. Vanapagan is the ogre character in Estonian versions of the series of internationally known folktales of the stupid ogre.
Letter gloves (kirikindad) – were believed to have protective or magic powers, especially church letter gloves and the gloves that sailors wore. Letter gloves were (are) decorated with special geometric patterns and narrow red stripes; they have many whispers and spells in them because the crafter used to sing while making, dyeing and knitting yarn.
Letter Belt (kirivöö) - the belt had the most ancient and magical patterns of all the craft items, red woven belts and laces were a common item to sacrifice (they were tied to the branches of holy trees). The belt was tied around parts of body that were sick and, pulled tightly around the waist, to protect and give strength to the bearer.
Sacred stones - the last ice age has left a lot of great stones (erratics) in Estonia. Many of them were considered sacred and people came to them to sacrifice silver, blood, red ribbons and coins and ask for welfare and prosperity. Often, the stones have little holes in them, some of them probably used to place the sacrifice in. The meaning and function of the holes is however still disputed; according to a paleoastronomer they may have had a calendary function.
Travelling forests - when people are mean, greedy and cruel, the forests will leave those places. The most stories about travelling forests are found in coastal areas of Estonia.

You wish you knew whether boy~
jk! :p
Honestly, it's a lot of boring war, and history things...
I'm not gonna lie, I tuned out the elders when they started talking about human kings fighting and deals with fae royalty and balance and yadayada...
But yeah, lots of stupid rules, not like the spring faes are actually following any, I swear I saw one with a servant!
Remember the thing I said about breaking names? that's how you get a servant! When you steal their name,
instead of going slowly and taking away parts of them during their life until you took everything they are,
you rip everything out of them in one go! The thing breaks apart on the spot and the creature forgets everything on the spot! I heard it hurt like hell, which wouldn't surprise me, we ARE destroying all your codes soooo... *shrug*
You CAN eat a name tho! You just need to go bit by bit I ate a winter fae's name during the last war! taste like ice cream! :9
wonder if Ice Elves taste like it too...
On another note! :)
Faes can learn basically any elemental magic but we are used to some, in particular, depending on your court,
like, light magic is a given for any Seelie Fae, That's how we make ourselves all shiny with all the light particles! :D
Well, it's mostly for the dramatics but you know, sparks!!~*°+*°+
Ice magic is the only gatekeept one, Winter faes always make a big deal out of it and we always end up in another war, not that I mind killing little snowflakes but it gets old~
So ice magic users get banished,
There are other dumb ways to get banished, like stealing a fae from the same court's name or letting a player into the fae realm, or the stupidest one,
No crafting!
Oh yeah, we ALL broke that one, even the elders! XD
-Fae
Pearl:... Why does that last rule exist? That doesn't make much sense.
Scar: Yeah how can you be fellow miners and crafters if you can't craft?
Pearl: ...That too...
Scott: Are we going to comment on the ice elves thing? Because I am an ice elf and I feel slightly threatened right now.
Scar: Oh right! No eating Sc- his name.
Grian: And no stealing his name or destroying it or any of that stuff, better be specific.

For the Kirby OC ask:
🍨🔮💜🕰️
for Chiffon, Little Nova, and Beamee!
🍨 (Ice Cream) - The Invader Armour undergoes a drastic transformation depending on its pilot. If they were to wield it, what appearance would their mech take on? What abilities would it have?
Funnily enough, in case of Beamee this is canon! Since Robo (Kirby's Robobot Armor) was rescued and repaired by Tabitha post-KPR, Beamee often ends up piloting it as a means of protection (since like that she will be guarded by it). It switches to Beam Mode variant when Beamee is piloting it, with a difference that Beam works like an electric whip rather than a big projectile.
For Chiffon, it would be a variation of Sword Mode, with laser blades being replaced with long protractable steel needle more suitable for stabbing than slashing on one hand, and a grapple gun on the other.
For Lil Nova... the only thing that'd change from Kirby's would be color - light, slightly iridescent blue instead of pink. It may have stars decorations, too.
🔮 (Crystal Ball) - Out of all the treasures in the Great Cave Offensive, Kirby is letting your OC pick one from his stash to keep! Which one do they pick, and why?
For Beamee, it's most likely to be this:
Tumblr media
with the justification that it can be made into either a decoration on clothing or a pretty jewelry! Beamee is a crafter above all else.
For Chiffon, it would be this:
Tumblr media
and I'd imagine Kirby would be more than happy to gift it to his little princess <3
For Nova, they're drawn to this:
Tumblr media
They can't summon their own Warp Star very well yet, so this would work as somewhat of a "magic feather" for them. (No, Tiff doesn't do it for them this time. Summoning Warp Star in my kirbyverse is Astral-specific spell, and is usually taught by either members of their constellation or from parent to child, and is very rarely given to outsiders.)
💜 (Purple Heart) - If they were corrupted by the Jamba Heart, which negative traits of theirs would be amplified?
For Beamee - insecurity. feeling of alienation. she'd most likely to become hostile to everyone, not truly believing she belongs anywhere. she'd also most likely to cause herself debilitating migraines, since she'd rely more on her half-working Beam than anything else.
For Chiffon - bravery shifting into foolhardiness. she will try fighting things she has no business fighting (I'm talking like things of a Final Boss threat caliber), with no plan or backup. and she will fight YOU if you try to stop her, bc she will also get uncooperative and uncontrollable.
For Nova, Jamba Hearts would actually be DETRIMENTAL. It's the second closest thing to triggering their core memory, after all, so Nova should be kept as far away from magic as such as possible - at least until they're old enough to resist it on their own.
🕰️ (Clock) - What would a Dreamy Gear version of them look like? What sort of accessories would they have? What kind of role do they play?
iiiiiii am going to leave this question unanswered for now bc that would require me to actually yknow. design shit and braincell is currently not braincelling
that and i still haven't read Dreamy Gear novel so i don't know anything about the setting qwq

So, I am absolutely not the smartest Undertale or Deltarune theory crafter out there, not by a long shot. But sometimes I think about how I called it with regards to the abilities of the red soul without really trying to.
In early 2018, I wrote a (too-edgy, really) story called 'Unname the Fallen' in which a post-No Mercy route Frisk learned magic when starting a new run through the Underground (in the interest of not rambling about my unfinished fic and making this post even longer, I'll leave it at that).
Tumblr media
(I later deleted it because I was embarrassed by the Ow The Edge factor.)
In the fic, Toriel was teaching Frisk how to use their newfound magic.
“I believe a stick is a wonderful idea! The ability to summon multiple will come in handy. Perhaps one day you will encounter multiple dogs who want to play fetch. You’ll need lots of sticks for that,” she said. It took a moment to resume her pedantic, teacherly front rather than her dorky mom side. “… Anyway.”
(Excerpt from Unname the Fallen.)
She taught them that every different soul color has a type of magic associated with it, and that magic can be projected onto other beings.
For example, blue souls could make others turn blue (like the way Papyrus could. Even though he had a monster soul, monsters could use magic associated with soul colors-- like Undyne turning you green, and Muffet turning you purple, and so on).
Tumblr media
Now, every soul color in Undertale has a sort of virtue associated with it, right? Cyan is patience, yellow is justice... we learn these from the 'ball game', but we never learn one for the red soul. Fan theories have gone around on the red soul's true nature. 'Hope'... 'Determination'...
And smarter people than me, again, have written about how it's unlikely that the red soul is 'determination', since all human souls have determination. So I interpreted the red soul as 'individuality'. "Try as you might, you continue to be yourself," the ball game says. "Despite everything, it's still you."
Tumblr media
"But Andrea," you're saying, "other theory crafters suggested that already! You didn't come up with that!"
You're right, I didn't. But what I did come up with is how 'individuality' could be projected onto another being.
You might think that turning another soul "red" would just give them freedom to move around the box however they want (and possibly to grow little legs and flee from combat). The way I interpreted it is that projecting red soul magic onto a monster is that it gives you control of them. You project your individuality- your will- onto them.
This time, red bathed the monster slowly, spreading like a disease. Its little arms became immobilized, and it tried to run, but then its legs followed suit. Something interesting: now they could feel everything it felt. The pounding in its chest. The wideness of its beady eyes. [...] They moved Ice Cap’s legs as if parts of their own body-- no magic words, no moving their own arms, they were simply able to turn it around and walk it toward them like a remote-controlled toy. Its face was frozen in fear at what was happening to it. They walked it around more, experimentally, even making it jump and crouch.
(Excerpt from 'Unname the Fallen'.)
Using the power of the red soul, Frisk was able to control monsters. It was a power unique to them-- unique to the soul. This, rather than the red soul being 'individuality', is what I think I predicted.
Tumblr media
Later that year, in 2018, Deltarune Chapter 1 was released. And we learned that Kris is possessed by the red soul, which is controlling them.
And in 2021, with Deltarune Chapter 2 and the weird route, we learned how the red soul can be used to manipulate monsters-- even when the host is down.
Tumblr media
Granted, the red soul didn't literally possess Noelle and make her walk around against her will, but it did command her nonetheless.
I'm sure I'm not the first one who came up with the idea. The Undertale community is full of extremely clever and creative people, and like I said, others had thought of the red soul as 'individuality' before me.
I'm not trying to claim to be the first one to come up with this idea, and I certainly don't think I came up with it before Toby himself or anything. I just remembered my old fic the other day and I thought it was funny, so I wanted to post about it.
"Why are you only posting this if you think it's funny?" Because it's my blog. You're at the circus, you might as well watch the clown dance.
BONUS:
“I am sure you are aware of auras. Most humans cannot see them. They are extensions of the soul. The auras of humans are quite powerful because you have physical forms,” she said.
^ Excerpt from Unname the Fallen, early 2018.
Tumblr media
^ Screenshot from Deltarune Chapter 1, late 2018.
The idea of Frisk using magic came from screenshots of early builds of Undertale in which Frisk could use a 'spell' command.
Tumblr media
'Talk' was later changed into 'Act', of course, and 'spell' was never implemented. We do know that humans can use magic in some capacity, since they sealed the monsters underground with "a magic spell".
With more chapters of Deltarune upcoming, and many questions still surrounding Hometown and the nature of magic in the light world, I'm excited to see more regarding magic and the red soul in the future.
This has been me rambling over a now-deleted fanfic, thanks for reading if you made it this far.

ROUND 1 / SIDE B / POLL 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kisa Hatasashi (@skeleton-monarch / @seabornchild) v. Zee Zalinos (@zeloinator)
Kisa Hatasashi:
q. What is your WoL name and pronouns? a. Kisa Hatasashi - She/Her
q. What is your WoL's species? a. Au Ra
q. What is your WoL's class? Or classes? a. Dragoon/Lancer
q. What data centre/server are you on, if you want people to find you? a. NA/Crystal
q. Tell us a bit about your WoL! a. Kisa was set up by her parents to marry rich and continue the family legacy; Kisa hated this thought enough to burn down the dresser which held the very expensive wedding dress her mother bought her. She left shortly thereafter to do what she’s always wanted to do: fight. If you ever need to find Kisa, just follow the sound of clanging metal and battle cries and you’re sure to happen upon her eventually. She’s not fond of being a “hero,” but she doesn’t mind the adventure the title has come with.
q. Why should YOU win? (Answer IC!) a. Why shouldn’t I win? I’m not in the business of losing and my friend’s coin purse is heavy enough that I’ve no interest in money making ventures.
Zee Zalinos:
q. What is your WoL name and pronouns? a. Zee Zalinos she/her
q. What is your WoL's species? a. Au’ra
q. What is your WoL's class? Or classes? a. WHM/AST Healer Main
q. What data centre/server are you on, if you want people to find you? a. Aether/Faerie
q. Tell us a bit about your WoL! a. Zee has always wanted to travel, I dont have much lore for her early life yet but once she had decided to travel to Gridania and become a Conjurer no one and nothing could stop her. (/spoilers for all expansions, as well as tw for losing limbs, sudden disabilities) In Heavensward she lost both Haurchefaunt, a companion she didn't trust until he gave his life for her, and her right leg. Not able to slow down she forced herself to learn to walk with her new prosthetic leg and continued her path through Stormblood. As a White Mage Zee never felt like she could discuss her crippling pain and phantom limb symptoms from her lost leg, it wasn’t until mid Shadowbringers, after long talks with Ardbert (or scoldings as he would describe it as) she finally told her companions, the scions and her trusted friends, about her struggles with her leg. At the end of Endwalker Zenos manages to injure Zee much more severely than it appears at first, the quick and panicked healing magics Zee performed on herself masking the severity for some time. It is not long until Zee looses her left arm, gaining her second prosthetic limb, but doing much better in dealing with its loss. Zee is a pure healer, though an extremely aggressive one, every other class she attempts is lacking the same touch and skill, no matter how much time she may commit to learning. Healing comes as easy as a breath to Zee, White magic being the simplest for her to wield. The stars and planet gazing of Astrologian winning her over very quickly after arriving in Ishguard. Though in her free time Zee is known to be an expert crafter, often holing herself inside her house and focusing purely on her work for days. Culinarian was the fastest for her to pick up, with Goldsmith being hot on its heels as her second best skill. Though post Endwalker Zee is ever busy with crafting, the call of her island from Tataru has her visiting as often as she can sneak away. While on her island Zee barely, if ever, uses her prosthetic arm, only using the prosthetic leg when she is wanting more maneuvering freedom without one of her beloved mounts out helping her. One of Zee’s most hidden passions is her animal caretaking. While her Chocobo, Ariadnae, is ever a worrier for Zee, the wol is always forcing her beloved bird to rest in between their big adventures.
q. Why should YOU win? (Answer IC!) a. Well, as your beloved and hard working healer I feel like a little recognition in a win would be nice! (Don’t look at what I’m casting Glare 3 is a Healing spell!)

While some of you could certainly brush up on your manners, you all have been wonderful little dragons. Enjoy your gifts! -Santa
Most kids woke up to their presents from Santa already waiting for them under the tree.
Most kids also weren’t created in batches through copious amounts of magic every dozen years. The Dragon Realms had plenty of individuals who were born the traditional way, not that it made the sizeable number of fairy-brought ones any less apparent and clustered together.
What would make a noticeable difference was that there weren’t very many kids from the previous Year of the Dragon - as Spyro could attest to - and the latest clutch ended up being bigger than normal to make up for it.
That was this nation’s special little thing - a full twelve months’ worth of celebrations for the sudden jump in population every twelve years, where even the annual holidays had that extra effort put in since they would be the first ones many would experience.
And what better way was there to celebrate the new generation’s first Christmas than with Santa delivering their presents in-person?
Once most of his deliveries around the world were done, he would spend his time in the Dragon Realms visiting each guild one by one in broad daylight, much to the delight of all its little dragons.
Overall, there mightn’t have been much in the name of children. Opinions could vary on if it was rendered more or less apparent with the 151 newcomers split across five clans, but an average of thirty hatchlings all bundled up in one place was still enough to guarantee a bustling environment. For the jolly man in red, it also proved quicker to make his rounds that way instead of having to go between countless individual houses for a change.
Within minutes of each grand debut, the floors would be decorated with shreds of colourful wrapping paper as far as the eye could see - and if they hadn’t been indoors, it’d especially stand out against the solid white sea of snow swamping most parts of the Dragon Realms lately.
The Peace Keepers were lucky enough to get snow in their arid capital; a clichéd Christmas miracle, but a pleasant miracle since it would save them the trouble of venturing out to Ice Cavern if they didn’t want to miss out on the usual winter atmosphere.
Santa’s extra efforts would be rewarded, he had a rare chance to see firsthand just how happy he was making the children of the world; and of course, the younger Artisans helped Devlin prepare a plentiful batch of the quintessential cookies to fuel the rest of his journey.
While seeing Santa and playing with their loot was enough for some of the kids, others wanted to investigate the sleigh or meet the reindeer, requests that he would gladly oblige (as long as they didn’t get too rowdy, his loyal steeds deserved a peaceful break from all the flying around). They played just as vital a role in Christmas and it was only fair that they were also smothered in gratitude.
The curtains had to close sooner or later; Santa would take his leave and continue on to the next guild for the mirth to start anew, until all five had their turn and he was off to those remaining places around the world. There was unfortunately only so much time he could spare out of an unimaginably busy 24 hour period, but any disappointment the hatchlings had was soon mitigated by them being allured with the mythical visage of his sleigh soaring into the skies.
More importantly, they could still enjoy spending the rest of Christmas with their loved ones…or of course, tackling whatever presents they had completely forgotten about opening the second he showed up.
Discussions about next Christmas were quick to arise following his departure; many of the baby dragons hadn’t yet understood that Santa would instead come during the night in the following years as he traditionally did, literally interpreting coming back next year as in he was coming back to visit next year.
Whenever the time came for the next generation of fairy-brought dragons to come along, leaving them in Spyro’s shoes to be good big siblings, Santa Claus would once again stop by to give the Dragon Realms’ newest residents the perfect first Christmas.

Party Parlor !
Party Parlor is a collaborative for all our fan-artists 🎨, fan-video makers 🎥 and fan-playlist crafters for the love of Penelope and Colin 🎶.
Fan-artists you will be the power players. Sign up for a topic or trope to display in your art (prompt ideas: it could be ice-cream 🍨 or yellow 💛 or turtles —only your imagination and the sky are the limits!) You'll have one week after signing up to sketch an idea. Please include a small summary. (Doesn't need to be perfect, just a concept.)
Based on the concepts, each fan-playlist or fan-video maker will choose and create an art form to match. [Example: If the fan art is about ice cream, then the fan playlist must have songs about ice cream as well]
If there is a mismatch of artists to video and playlist creators or vice versa we will double up.
After the initial sketches are sent out, claims will take place. Details to follow.
There will be 2 check-ins during this event.
But of course, we don’t want to leave our writers out. Writers: once the official artwork/video/playlist collaboration is done, if you're feeling inspired by any of the creations we encourage you to work your fan fic magic! 😀

Character Classes
Hero. Always in the party. Can equip 75% of the equipment in the game. Generalist stats and skills except for Battle Cry, Rousing Speech, and Fuck That Guy In Particular, representing their leadership role and unifying presence on and off the battlefield.
Thief. Stats and skills emphasize speed, evasion, concealment, and deception. Cannot equip Heavy Armor or Weapons. Steal skill has a chance to take away enemy gear or supplies. Prestige Classes include Hacker, which disables enemy special abilities by hacking their gear, and Con Artist, which tricks and confuses enemies into attacking each other.
Soldier. Stats and skills emphasize damage output and damage tolerance. Can equip most body armor and firearms. Special skills include Covering Fire, which causes enemies to miss the next attack, Suppressing Fire, which stops one enemy from attacking entirely but only so long as the soldier suppresses them each turn, and Defilade, a multi-target attack that requires skipping at least one turn to set up. Prestige Classes are either Sniper (anti infantry) or Grenadier (anti armor) enemy bonuses.
War Wizard. Combat Focused Spellcaster. Stats and skills emphasize smarts and durability, but not brute strength. By default uses fire, ice, lightning, or poison. Increased combat power comes at the cost of not knowing non combat utility spells. Cannot wear heavy armor or use heavy weapons. Prestige class unlocks highest form of one elemental attack.
Occultist. Utility Spellcaster. Stats and skills emphasize intellect and wisdom but not strength or stamina. Uses Time, Gravity, and Mesmeric magic to alter battlefield conditions. Can also repair damaged gear by rewinding its timeline to before it was broken, with the Nostalgia spell. Cannot wear heavy armor or use heavy weapons. No prestige classes but can unlock Summon skill with the Phonebook Of The Gods.
Inventor. Utility Crafter. Stats and skills emphasize intellect and speed. Uses a variety of gadgets on the battlefield. Manages the crafting system. (Pilots the airship until the Hero completes the Tutorial Side Quest "Buffalo Wings" after landing at Isla Obscura.)
Survivalist. Multiclass Fighter and Wilderness Tracker. Stats and skills emphasize combat and stealth. Can equip any firearm but not heavy armor. Gets damage bonus against wild animals and undead. (Allows skipping 90% of the sidequest "Forest Dump" but this is not recommended as several unique pieces of gear are found in the forest map.) Prestige Class into Anarchist (bonus damage against enemy soldiers or police officers) or Camp Cook (unlocks crafting high tier healing items in the Mess Tent / Airship Galley.)
Chrononaut. DLC Exclusive Time Traveler. Reskinned survivalist with Time Magic themed Time Out ability that allows them to take two turns at once.
Medic. Combat Capable Healer. Provides emergency healing to other party members. Cannot equip any weapons other than knives or light pistols. Prestige Class into Surgeon (unlocks all Bladed Weapons and the Vivisect combat skill) or Paramedic (massive speed and strength boost and ability to use Jaws Of Life And Death weapon).
Dino Cavalry. Utahraptor Riding Light Dragoon. Stats comparable to Soldier class but cannot equip heavy armor. (Villain-exclusive class until Act 3.) Unofficial mascot of game and studio, appears on most promotional art.
Alchemist. Magical Healer and Utility Spellcaster. Crafts "Elixirs" at crafting stations that can then be used like spells. Primary source for magical healing. No Prestige Class but can be massively upgraded one stat at a time through the "Great Work" Side Quest.
Heavy Armor. Pilot / Driver / Gunner of Powered Armor / Macro Armor. Stats comparable to Soldier but cannot equip heavy weapons or armor; in return, are able to wear / ride advanced mechanical weapons platforms. (Can be unlocked as early as Act 2 depending on dialog choices.) Prestige Class specializes in Ground Armor or Sky Armor.

Creating Physical Wounds for Your Characters
Hey Story Crafters,
Last week’s post got me thinking about injuries—physical ones this time, which I want to talk about in this post.
Whenever there’s a fight scene, your protagonist risks getting injured. (To be honest, the risk of injury exists in all action scenes; but it’s especially true—expected, even—for fight scenes. And the same risks apply for a group of characters.) If, say, your protagonist breaks his ankle in the first fight scene of the story, the consequences of that injury need to affect every action your protagonist takes from that moment onward. He can’t suddenly jump to his feet in the next chapter, ready to continue on his adventure; not unless he has a healing ability, or a magic potion that can heal him.
When a character sustains an injury, the circumstances that injury occurs, what the injury is, and how that injury affects the character—mentally, emotionally, and physically—all need to be purposeful. The injury needs to mean something to the character, needs to have stakes and consequences. Not just for the injured character, but for the plot, too.
An example of a character who undergoes a serious, life-changing injury is Jaime Lannister from A Game of Thrones (based on A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R. R. Martin). I’ll do a brief breakdown later on, but if you’re familiar with the character, keep him in mind as you read on.
Circumstances of the injury
If your stories tend to be more action-oriented, your first instinct might be to assume that a fight scene will be the most likely time your protagonist gets injured.
That is not always the case. While it can certainly be suspenseful for the protagonist to be victorious in a fight scene against the “bad guys,” only to realize she was cut by a poisoned blade—leading to a subplot of finding a doctor or an antidote to cure her—there are other potential setups, depending on your protagonist’s interests, skills, strengths, and weaknesses.
The circumstances of how a character gets injured is another opportunity to establish character, and show development.
Protagonist’s interests, skills, strengths, and weaknesses:
What are your protagonist’s interests? Do they like animals? Fast cars? Hanging out at the beach? And is your protagonist proud or comfortable with her interests, or are her interests a source of shame? Knowing your protagonist’s interests and how she feels about them can provide opportunities for a scene when an injury can occur, if it’s relevant to the story.
Do the same thing with your protagonist’s skills, strengths, and weaknesses—what are they, and is your protagonist proud or ashamed of them?
Considering these factors can create interesting sources of internal tension
Type of injury
Though this technically falls under the umbrella of “circumstances of the injury,” I set it apart for better organization.
The type of injury sustained by a character needs to have meaning, to prompt the character to change and, hopefully, grow.
You might also consider story type and worldbuilding elements when deciding the type of injury your protagonist or another character (or characters) sustains.
Story type
Story type matters when deciding the type of injury a character might sustain. For example, the expectation for injury in a love story is very different from expectations of more action-oriented stories. In a love story, the expectation might be that the male lead gets slapped, or a black eye.
Make sure to keep audience expectations in mind when considering the possibility of injuring a character.
Worldbuilding elements
The type of treatment an injured character is able to receive can reveal worldbuilding elements like the status of healthcare in the story world—how advanced it is, and how accessible it is to the average citizen vs. a more affluent one.
The mental/emotional/physical effect of the injury
How does your protagonist react to his injury? Is he ready to tackle the next obstacle head-on, or does he start to question his ability to reach his ultimate goal?
How do the characters he interacts with treat him, or behave around him, post-injury?
As an example for the third question, say you have a typical fantasy quest type of story where a group of individuals come together to defeat an evil sorcerer terrorizing the land. The protagonist—the hero, the chosen one meant to defeat the sorcerer—gets seriously injured while rescuing a cute, fluffy magical creature in distress, and her ability to confront the evil sorcerer is in question. The members of the group can react in several ways, but it basically boils down to this: 1) they believe in the protagonist and do their best to support her, or 2) they start to lose faith in the protagonist.
The effect an injury has on the injured character, and the surrounding characters, is another opportunity to establish character, and show development (for the injured character and the characters they interact with).
Character Example: Jaime Lannister (a very brief breakdown)
*Note: It’s been a while since I watched A Game of Thrones, so this is a very brief, broad strokes breakdown. If I misremember some details, please don’t hold it against me too much. 😊
Circumstances of injury: Jaime and Brienne are captured by Bolton soldiers on their way to King’s Landing. He manages to successfully prevent Brienne from being assaulted, but when he tries to secure his own freedom, he inadvertently provokes his captor’s rage.
Skill: Jaime is a skilled swordsman, and takes pride in this skill. He might not take pride in every aspect of his reputation, but his skill as a swordsman is the part of his reputation he is proud of.
Injury type: Jaime loses his sword hand. Since GOT has a medieval setting, he doesn’t have access to proper care for his injury.
Effect of injury: In losing his sword hand, Jaime loses his sense of identity. He initially wallows in despair, but he eventually adapts to this loss, and learns to use a sword with his nondominant hand. He even grows, as a character.
A Final Note
You don’t need to use all of these factors when deciding if your story needs a character to be injured to advance the plot. But they’re worth thinking about and exploring, especially if you think your current story doesn’t have high enough stakes yet.
Until next time!
Best,
Leah
