Wait, but also Commander, right? Tomik, Wielder of Law, in the normal pace of play does have the equivalent of "Costs 1 less as long as you control a Planeswalker", but if Tomik is your Commander, this cost reduction applies also to the additional 2 you must pay every time you cast him from the command zone, right?
@magicjudge, sorry to bother you, do I understand the rules correctly?
Why does the new Tomik have affinity for planeswalkers when it can only have the cost reduced by 1 at most? It seems strange to use affinity in this way instead of just saying "Tomik cost 1 less to cast if you control a Planeswalker".
It’s done for flavor.

Back for More?
Tumblr media
Hi everyone. It's been a long time. I'm not sure how many of you are still around, but I hope it's a fair number given the continued popularity of MaRo's blog.
Anyway, I'm back. I've cleared out the inbox of old questions and it's open and ready for new ones. No promises of how frequently I'll post here, or if I'll be back for long, but with everything going on with Twitter lately, it made me miss this place and all of you.
So hit me with those hot questions, comments, whatever.
-- Charlotte

What sort of power level do you build your commander decks to?
I typically like my decks to lean toward the stronger end of the 75% rule. I like Commander to be a fun, social experience, but I also want to be able to end the game in a reasonable time frame if necessary. This typically results in strong, solid win conditions with only a few ways to search out pieces in the deck. That said, my Alesha deck could sit at the adult table if need be.

Today’s Daily Magic Update is brought to you by: The Need for a Daily Magic Update
And for more reasons than just to see more of Blake Rasmussen. For me, the Daily Update helped to make me feel closer to Wizards and the Magic community as a whole. If something big happened in the community and it wasn’t on Tumblr, then I could still see it without having to wait for it to spread here. If something wasn’t being communicated well through regular articles, individual Wizards employees, or any other channel, then the Daily Update could clarify things (like Wizard’s stance on bullying/harassment within the community).
I like almost all of the new site. I miss the Card of the Day, but mostly for the snazzy text that the editors wrote underneath each card. (Side-note: If the CotD was still a thing, then when Blood Sun got released they could have mentioned how it interacted with other lands if they made it the CotD). I like the overall look of the webpage, but I also miss how you could see the previous day’s links/articles by going through the previous Updates. Now it’s only Wizard’s own articles if you look through the archive (because that makes sense). However, if you miss a day of reading the webpage (power goes out, travel, busy), then you completely miss out on that day’s outside articles. But if there was an Update then you would still be able to find that snazzy Limited review that LSV did of *insert set here* if you knew the general date of when you saw it without having to leave the Magic website.
If I remade the Daily Magic Update, I would make it more of a “yesterday’s news” kinda deal: an article with links to major articles/events that happened in the Magic Community the previous day or weekend. It could even be called “Time Walker’s News” or something fun like that. The idea would be that the editors could continue to be a presence in the community, and the community would have something to gather around. Plus, people would be able to catch up on any days that they miss. It could also include a “Card of the Day” section because fun.
A Daily Magic Update would be your super cool friend catching you up on everything that you missed yesterday. And honestly, it’d be great to see more fun commentary from Blake Rasmussen and all the other editors again. I miss them.

I'm home for two weeks! So that means cleaning out my closet. I did a photoshoot the other day with all my judge stuff, to get some nice product photos for auctions and sales posts. It was surprisingly fun to dance around in the cold with a bunch of gloves, scarves, umbrellas and towels! Some of the photos came out pretty nice even before editing, my favorites are probably the one with the lightning bolts (mostly because the square cornered bolt tilts Isaac) and the one with ALL THE SWAG.

If Goblins, Elves, Merfolk, Zombies, etc. aren't required on every plane, how about Humans? I enjoy seeing more and varied humanoid species and always having humans as the default on every world feels very blah.
Here's the problem. The vast majority of the dominant race that plays the game likes seeing itself. So, as long as Magic is primarily a Human game, I'd expect to see a lot of Humans.
We did try the no-Human experiment on Lorwyn and it went over badly. So badly, that I don't expect us to repeat it anytime soon.

Alesha
general opinion: fall in a hole and die | don’t like them | eh | they’re fine I guess | like them! | love them | actual love of my life
hotness level: get away from me | meh | neutral | theoretically hot but not my type | pretty hot | gorgeous! | 10/10 would bang
hogwarts house: gryffindor | slytherin | ravenclaw | hufflepuff
best quality: She’s the colors of one of my favorite tri-color combinations!
worst quality: I’m actually really upset that Alesha only existed in Tarkir’s past. She’s the kind of character that I really wish we could have seen more of.
ship them with: Death’s heart goes all aflutter whenever she smiles
brotp them with: I heard she got along pretty well with Kolaghan
needs to stay away from: Literally every other dragon lord
misc. thoughts: Both from a character and card perspective, I really like Alesha, and hope to one day build a deck around her. I’ve seen a lot of good lists with her at the helm and was honestly taken by surprise with how well she works in Commander.

Here's some incredibly important information that you should all be aware of.
Question about the newly spoiled card Hypothesizzle (Instant. 3UR. Draw two cards, then you may discard a nonland card. WHEN you do, ~ deals 4 damage to any target). Am I right in assuming that this creates a triggered ability upon resolution, which goes on the stack after Hypothesizzle has finished resolving? If yes, do you have any idea why it is templates like this and not with „if you do“?
Yes, this is correct.
Hypothesizzle has what’s called a “reflexive trigger”, which is new technology as of Amonkhet. Reflexive triggers haven’t shown up on a lot of cards yet, so most players don’t yet recognize them.
Reflexive triggers exist to allow their controllers to more precisely control how their spells and abilities resolve by not forcing a selection of targets until the reflexive trigger is put on the stack.
In the case of Hypothesizzle, you don’t choose a target for its reflexive trigger until you discard a card. While the exact nature of the discarded card doesn’t matter (beyond being nonland), the two cards drawn from the first half of the spell might change what you want to target. For example, if the card you discard is a Fiery Temper, you might choose to then target a 7-toughness creature rather than a 4-toughness creature.
If Hypothesizzle had the “if you do” wording rather than the “when you do” wording, the target for the damage would have to be chosen when Hypothesizzle was cast, before any cards were drawn from it.
