I just can't stop doing projects... I'm really happy with how this sign turned out. Spent only two days working on this, thanks to my library's makerspace!

the little press that could
Yesterday, the Baylor University Libraries Book Arts and Letterpress Lab welcomed its newest addition to press family, a Washington style standing iron press from 1870 made by R. Hoe & Co. (New York/London). According to documentation accompanying the press, it was used to publish the Spanish-language daily newspaper El Cronista del Valle (The Chronicler of the Valley) in Brownsville, Texas…

Challenge 1 Build (Week 1 Makerspaces)
This week the challenge was to create a circuit that would result in a a blinking LED light. The challenge was fun and a great intro into the world of programming.

Posted above is the screenshot of the code used for the challenge. (Via arduino)
How I feel starting this adventure.

Photos of the electric diagram and the actual build can be found below.

Posted above is a link to the video of the circuit in action :D
Initially, upon opening the makerspace kit I was overwhelmed. I enjoy building items like tv stands or putting a couch together. Dealing with computer programming and exceptionally small electronic pieces is far on the other end of the spectrum from my comfort zone. I began the challenge by first separating all the different different gatherings of equipment. As I began to look at the resistors, wires, breadboards and other items I started to calm down realizing that this is not impossible. I followed each direction being sure to check after each step to be sure that my makerspace aligned with the diagram for that step. I eventually was able to complete circuit one in about 25 minutes. The challenge was very reassuring, I understand that these circuits can become quite complex, however I am grateful for circuit 1 as it allows for students to try to become adapted to the makerspace world. I'm excited for the next build!

🚀🔧 Unlocking Creativity: How Makerspaces Revolutionize EdTech 🎓💡
Tumblr media
🏫🚀 In the ever-evolving landscape of education, one of the most exciting developments is the rise of Makerspaces! 🤖🔍 These collaborative spaces are transforming the way students learn by fostering a hands-on approach to education. From creating robots 🤖 to experimenting with new technologies 💻, Makerspaces are empowering students to become innovators of the 21st century. 🌟
🔧 What is a Makerspace? 🤔
A Makerspace is a physical environment where students can dive into the world of creativity and innovation. 🌈🚀 It's a place where imagination knows no bounds, and ideas turn into reality. 🎨🚀 These spaces are equipped with cutting-edge tools, ranging from 3D printers 🖨️ to electronics kits 🔌, allowing students to explore, experiment, and bring their ideas to life. 🌟💡
🔍 The Power of Hands-On Learning 📚👐
Makerspaces are more than just places with fancy gadgets; they hold the key to experiential learning! 🗝️🧠 When students engage in hands-on activities, they grasp concepts more effectively and retain knowledge for the long haul. 🧠💡 Whether they're building a miniature bridge 🌉 to understand engineering principles or coding a program to control a robotic arm 🤖, the process of creating sparks curiosity and critical thinking. 💭🚀
💡 Unlocking 21st Century Skills 🚀🔓
In a world where adaptability and innovation are crucial, Makerspaces provide the perfect breeding ground for 21st-century skills. 🌐🎯 Collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking—the four Cs—flourish in these vibrant spaces. 💬💭 Students work together to solve problems, bounce ideas off each other, and celebrate their successes as a team. 👫👬👭 The confidence gained from navigating the challenges of making fosters a growth mindset that will serve them well in any field they choose. 🌱💪
🌈 Embracing Diversity and Inclusivity 🤝🌍
Makerspaces have the incredible ability to break down barriers and bring students from all walks of life together. 👩‍🎓🧑‍🎓 Regardless of their backgrounds or abilities, students find common ground in their shared passion for creating and exploring. 🌟🌈 EdTech companies that invest in Makerspaces are investing in a future that celebrates diversity and inclusivity. 🌍💕
🌟 The Role of EdTech Companies 🚀💻
As the world of education evolves, EdTech companies play a pivotal role in shaping the future of learning. 🌐💻 By supporting and integrating Makerspaces into educational institutions, they are empowering a new generation of thinkers and problem solvers. 🌱🔍 These companies bridge the gap between traditional learning and the dynamic demands of the modern workforce, ensuring that students are well-prepared for the challenges that lie ahead. 👩‍💼👨‍💼
🚀 Embrace the Makerspace Movement! 🌟🏁
The Makerspace movement is gaining momentum, and it's time for every educator and EdTech company to join the journey! 🚀🔥 Let's ignite the spark of creativity in our students and cultivate a generation of confident, innovative, and adaptable individuals. 🌟💪 Together, we can unlock the potential of Makerspaces and pave the way for a brighter, more inventive future. 🌈💡

Metro RP2350 take 5 🔄🌟🤞
Sometimes mistakes are made in prototyping; that's why they're prototypes. The error in rev D was funny: while making the QFN80 footprint, the pins got placed clockwise rather than widdershins. Not surprisingly, that board didn't come up at all, so here's a full rip-up and reroute, with the correct pinout this time! Fingers crossed. Hopefully, this is the final revision, and we can move on to other RP2350 boards we have cooking.

I’m shooting for the Medium goal of 8-10 binds this Binderary so staying organized is key. Especially as I mostly do one process on the whole batch before I move to the next step and one text block looks much like another at most stages. So each design has a number coded to it and marked on the spines. Who knew roman numerals would come in clutch in 2025.

hello hello!! I don't know how common it is, but I've heard some libraries have maker spaces (sewing machines, 3d printers, etc) do yall have such a place?
We do! Ours is located at our Merrillville Branch and is called the Libratory: www.lcplin.org/libratory
Tumblr media
We don't have sewing machines but we do have 3D printers. When we created the Libratory we were mainly focused on the preservation of physical media, so most of our stuff is dedicated to that. We have special scanners for slides and photos as well as equipment to convert old film reels, VHS, cassettes, etc.
We expanded to add the 3D printers (we have a BambuLab X1-Carbon and a Dremel 3D45), then a WhisperRoom, which is a sound booth for recording music, podcasts, podfics, whatever. It's equipped with mics, software, audio interfaces and mixers and all that good stuff.
Tumblr media
It's hard to grab the whole Libratory in a photo, but here's a promo video that has close ups of lots of our equipment and breaks down what you can do in there (video has captions):
youtube
[ID: Video panning around the room pictured earlier in the post. It focuses in on someone scanning photos and old film strips, then shows someone using a VHS converter, a DVD converter, and a converter for Hi-8 and Super-8 film. Next is the 8mm film converter, which threads the actual film on to a device that looks like a projector. Then they show the cassette capture and turntable record converter. A woman comes in and hands over a box of old material to demonstrate a drop-off conversion service where the librarians convert your material for you. Finally, the video shows someone sitting down inside the WhisperRoom and using the laptop and sound board to record voice audio. For details on all of the equipment and services shown you can visit www.lcplin.org/libratory /ID]
That's the basics! Just let me know if you have any more questions!

The seeds of an exciting journey
Since the spring, a lot of my thinking and energy has been devoted to the development of an exciting new endeavor in the Baylor Libraries – the creation of the Book Arts and Letterpress Lab. The spring and this summer have been busy developing the space (on the first floor of Jones Library) and the concepts behind this space. Part of this journey was attempting to articulate the What and the Why…
