How Inkfish Change their Ink Colour

Here's an extremely long, (poorly) illustrated speculatory post about how ink and inksports could THEORETICALLY work in Splatoon! yippee!

Ink is a mucous that Inklings, Octolings and Cuttlings produce with their ink sac, where it can be expelled through the mouth and siphon (and through the skin via the ink vessels, but don't worry about that just yet). You can take a look at my diagram of the ink vessels here.

Spitting up or sweating ink is a common stress response in ink-bearing cephalopods, it also serves as an extremely rude gesture if you happen to aim it at someone else's face.

Inkfish actually can't change ink colour on their own, so instead they have to rely on artificial means to brighten and saturate the colour into something more easily recognisable.

The history behind inksports is extensive. In ancient times, inkfish would use naturally occurring dyes (such as clay, plants etc.) to change their ink colour, often to denote a particular social group. In modern times, colours are artificially synthesised and treated to have a minimal impact on the inkfish's body as possible, as believe it or not constantly eating red clay wasn't exactly good for you.

The colour of an Inkling or Octoling's skin is determined by chromatophores, which can be basically any colour or shade they choose. The chromatophores function completely independently from the ink sac, so it's possible to have differing skin and ink colours (although you'd probably confuse your teammates a fair bit).

This is fine and cool and all, but how do inkfish prevent different team colours from just blending all together in a match? WELL! While turfing capsules also change ink colour, they can also alter the chemical qualities of the ink itself by introducing something called polarity!

There are two kinds of turfing ink- polar and nonpolar. In easy terms (I am not a chemist), it's what allows two different colours of ink to sit on top of each other in separate layers instead of diluting together like paint. Before a match starts, each turfing team is given dye capsules in their respective team colour, with each team having opposing polarities to prevent inks from mixing together during the game.

Before technology got involved, people would simply use oil and water to prevent one ink colour from mixing with another's. Nowadays, oil and fat derivatives are commonplace as it's less likely to cause health problems as the body slowly processes it out.

Splatting works when enemy ink reacts with the outermost ink vessels in an opposing team member's skin, forcing the victim to contract their ink sac and spit up all their ink (usually in the form of a super-jump back to spawn, though in the moment it's not uncommon to overshoot it). It's also possible to splat someone with blunt force trauma, but we tend to call that assault. Splatting is usually not dangerous, but it's still not a terribly pleasant experience and is somewhat painful, akin to a nasty static shock.

This splatting reaction is also why water is used in turf stages as a restrictive barrier, as water causes the same splatting reaction in the body as enemy ink does (at least until the dye wears off).

while i think there has been good done by the normalization of vitiligo through fashion and beauty models, changing ideas of vitiligo spots as blemishes or some kind of contagious disease… it has not helped the broader public understand vitiligo, i feel? it’s not just a visual difference. it also impacts that person’s life.

my mom cannot enjoy the sun at the beach the same way people without vitiligo can. she wears a sweater and socks Everywhere, to cover her spots on her arms and feet. she also always needs to have an umbrella if we go walking. she wears shades indoors because her eyes are sensitive to the fluorescent lights, and of course she always wears them outdoors.

like, it’s not just some little quirk you can add to a character and have them be exactly like someone without vitiligo in all other ways. i’m not sure if one could call it a disability, but it definitely is a condition that requires accommodations and lifestyle changes.

Hi ! I love your art and took inspiration from you to do the front page of my notebook for my theater lessons !

I unfortunately had to do it on the paper from the notebook directly instead of drawing paper so I'm a little disappointed with the results but I like what I did when I was figuring it out, on the drawing paper (and also on tracing paper for some reason ?)

Overall I'm so happy I could kind of replicate your technique for the light while using cheap wax pencils (stinginess wins 💪)

Anyway, thank you for posting your art it altered my brain chemistry 👍

Yesterday I visited the Maretarium Aquarium, an aquarium in Kotka, Finland! Here are some pictures :)

All the tanks and fish were very beautiful indeed! But the showstopper was definitely the Baltic Sea tank, which holds 680 000 liters of water. It’s the single biggest tank in all of Finland, it is seven meters deep, it gets its water from the Baltic right next to Maretarium, and it houses sturgeons, salmon, trout, perches, zanders, roaches… the list goes on.

HI 🇮🇩 ANON nice to see u again !! i will confess i have actually watched neither avatar movie, so i have very little idea what goes on in it. as for the na’vi, i’ve seen them, and they’re cool, but personally i have no carnal desires for them. that being said, i think fei would find meeting a na’vi/na’vi-adjacent reader quite interesting! she’d find your height and stature impressive, though she definitely wouldn’t be intimidated. she would be very flattered if you could pick her up, however, maybe in a princess carry. she’s a big strong general who’s mostly made of pure muscle and it isn’t often she gets carried around so easily so i think she’d end up getting a little flustered. blushy fei…………. alshsjsjsjjs I NEED HER CARNALLY…….

anyway, in a relationship i don’t think there’s any significant difference in the way fei would treat you. human, na’vi, foxian, or something else, if she loves you she loves you, you know? her life’s too short to be caught up about worrying about how physically different you two are. she’d much rather spend that time as earnestly as she can.

Colors!

My thumb's been fucked up by a steroid shot to the point where I can't hold a pen to draw, but the light touch of a watercolor brush is mostly okay, and I had dot cards for Daniel Smith and DaVinci paints, so I've spent the last few weeks unleashing my manic color goblin.

Friends, I've painted so many happy little rectangles. And it has been a journey.

I've found that one of the most-referenced sources for pigment lightfastness is a hard-coded website straight out of the 90s that also talks about UFOs and human evolution. (I don't know what the guy says about human evolution, because I'm afraid to find out, but it makes me very happy that a site like that still exists).

I've learned you can make lovely purples with a cool red and phthalo green, which actually MAKES SENSE, I GUESS, but is still a bit weird and awesome even though I understand the color theory.

I've painted with the Danger Colors.

(Cobalt, manganese, chromium, and cadmium. DO NOT LICK).

I've finally spelled phthalo often enough that I can remember it!

And I've fallen deeply, desperately in love, then had my heart broken.

It's name was DaVinci Phthalo Turquoise (pigment code PB16). When I painted it out it was beautiful; smoothly flowing into a perfect fade, the deepest, most inviting pool of cool, saturated perfect teal. I burst into song. A choir of angels descended to sing backup vocals. I never used to believe in love at first sight, but I was wrong.

...then it dried.

It dulled so much. It was still fine. Nothing special, but fine. Whatever. I'm over it. I am a strong, independent artist. I don't need that kind of negativity in my life.

There's still all the other colors. Colors that didn't betray me. Much.

Here, Monkey is helping model the last swatch tests, which helped me choose which cool red to buy. The phone doesn't capture all the nuance, but they also started out fairly close. (I went with column 3, DaVinci's PV19 quinacridone rose madder).

So... if you're one of those tenacious, patient people who follows my fic, and you've been wondering why I haven't posted, I suppose I really just have one thing to say:

Colors go brrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

now im not an analyst or anything buuut

icarus keeps talking about how they're so bad at being good but they're also really bad at being bad and mean and sneaky

they aren't good at either because they're a person and you have to put in work to do that shit, being an asshole is always easier of course. being closed off and blunt is so much easier. look at vexxed ari, they were content, not happy but not sad, not hurting. but they aren't doing that. they are putting more effort and work into trying to convince people, to get them to see though their eyes. to try and justify their actions because of how much they care. they know what they're doing is bad and wrong. but they still keep trying to explain themself. and they keep failing to be mean, and bad. because! they are! a person! they have tried so hard to be good. they have failed, how long did they fail for before they decided that they gave up? because i dont think they've acctually given up yet. maybe recent lore was the last straw, maybe they meant it this time. but they still care. they are not naturally good at being kind or open and they are not naturally good at being mean and blunt. no one is. you decide if you are a kind person. you decide if you are an asshole. no one has a completely pure soul. everyone has fucked up everyone is a weird looking mixture of black and white. everyone has their own unique shade of grey. its up to you how much black or white you add.
