hey remember how nydas okiro from exandria unlimited calamity used his very last breath to drive his sword through his best friends heart, in a desperate, last ditch attempt to save his soul? to save him from eternal suffering? remember how it didnt work . wild stuff.

EXU Calamity episode 2 rewatch thoughts:
I think there's been many a post about how most members of the Ring of Brass could be the main villain of other D&D campaigns, but Patia and Laerryn together are truly something else. Their outward hostility towards anyone who doesn't live up to their impossible standards, Laerryn saying she doesn't concern herself with anyone dumber than herself, Patia quietly watching as Laerryn lays into someone who had just had their memory modified and then justifying it by saying "She really should have known better than have her memory modified". I know where their respective stories are heading so I understand why they were pushing the arrogance level that high, but man they are really a scary duo to encounter.
A small but wholesome moment: Marisha getting up to get tissues for Luis who can't help but tear up at any mention of Evandrin, no matter whether he's in the scene or not.
I praised Brennan for how he handles ability checks in my post about ep1 and I was gonna make the point here that - on the flip side - Brennan isn't great at denying his players information. He hands out lore even when the checks are fairly low. And I do think he was doing a bit of that during Calamity, mostly because the story feels so much more important when the stakes are revealed. However, throughout the episode there are also moments where Brennan completely disregards low rolls. He doesn't even do the "You don't notice anything" on a low perception roll or a "This isn't familiar to you" on a low religion check - he just straight up moves on with the story. And I kinda like that? When rolls are low enough they indicate that the subject matter is just not at the forefront of the character's mind.
The scene between Zerxus and Asmodeus is terrifying and expertly crafted by both Brennan and Luis, but I think the gradual unease that their scene builds is signed, sealed and delivered by Nydas trying to conceal a panic attack as he reads the prophecy about the end of the world. "Let's continue to consider this false - I misspoke - it is false."

SO LEMME GET THIS STRAIGHT:
The Luxon came to Exandria early on and ATE TWO GODS, so everything in the world that was currently fighting went "Aight, truce, let's lock them on the moon" and MADE A MOON OUT OF A CONTINENT TO TRAP THEM so now they're using Ruidusborn/Exaltants to get out.
Imogen's mom is (presumably) working with the Cerberus Assembly, and thus is now DIRECTLY IN BEAU AND CALEB'S CROSSHAIRS.
The Assembly and the Unseelie Court have joined together to construct giant devices in 3 different planes to do Something™ to Ruidus in hopes of either setting the Luxon free or controlling it. ONE OF THESE PLACES IS THE RUINS OF FUCKING AVALIR FROM "EXU: CALAMITY", the other is in the Feywild and the third is in the Shadowfell, WHERE VOX MACHINA KILLED DELILAH LAST TIME?!?!
DELILAH WHO WAS ALSO PART OF THE CERBERUS ASSEMBLY BEFORE SHE WAS KICKED OUT?!?!
Fearne's Grandma can help, but she's essentially a GIANT BABA YAGA who will 1000% ask for something horrible in return...
Both Ira Wendagoth and Liliana Temult could be an in for the Hells in the Material Plane, but good luck with that...
And finally, Planerider Ryn implies she's gonna call The Mighty Nein to help with this and tells BH to call in any favors (VOX MACHINA) they can possibly pull for the final assault!
DID I GET ALL THAT RIGHT?!?!?!
Man...
Taliesin REALLY picked THE WORST POSSIBLE EPISODE to miss, huh?
Side Note: Anyone else think the black thing that Thull uses to prevent resurection is sending souls to the Shadowfell to work on / guard the machine there and IF SO is Orym gonna have to fight Will and Derrig?!
Side Note 2: FUCK I gotta finish Campaign 2. Haven't even met Essek yet and that Nott's kid spoiler was something I could have done without...
Edit: I have, since posting this, learned that the Luxon came before the Gods and the Primordials, and thus can't be the same entity as Predathos... Apologies for the confusion!

ExU calamity episode 1: my head is spinning. i have out loud said “what the fuck????” so many times. i am vibrating. feel like i need to rewatch the episode immediately whilst taking notes like i’m in a lecture. have some Thoughts because if I don’t put them somewhere i will explode
[this is very long, bc there was a lot. also very late, because I forgot to finish it and post it. ah well.]
good evening and we open with the weirdest and most terrifying shit you will ever witness. thank you for tuning it
also zerxus has a strength of 29 (giant strength belt?) and an ac of 25 holy shit
a small child fishing for stars in the void? cool cool cool
Aabria is mouthing “what. the. fuck.“ and ma’am I could not agree more
oh cool it’s his son. cool and there’s a dead husband. let’s just start off with emotional damage it’s fine
“Ghor Dranas” ooooooohhh here we go Calamity here we come
“if you can see the stars when you look down, what will you see when you look up?” what a metal line I love it
this is the most opening to ever opening
Loquatious Seelie!
love that Sam is just a presenter. he’s achieved his final form. also his appearance is slightly terrifying. also a Seelie hmmmm.
this is just Sam’s ad copies with his ridiculous characters taken to the net level I’m Dying
“Exandria Firma” is a great phrase
“Seelie you later!” yes
I love Laerryn instantly. what a vibe
and they’re divorced we spent so long begging for divorced PCs for C3 I am so fucking glad we get to see it here!
hands down Sam is a great person for this dynamic and I am so hyped to see how he and Aabria play off each other
same with Nydas, I am kinda obsessed with the vibe that these PCs are giving off of “extremely busy extremely good at their jobs high up people in a powerful city, on the eve of the biggest event of seven years”
the whole Sphinx drama is incredible
the kites are such a cool idea! also aww a loaf. cute.
a surplus of ether? hmmmm. we are getting into the Magic Theory (TM) over here I am Interested
Cerrit is definitely in a different movie to everyone else. Travis is killing the noir vibe. I love it
also an eisfuura detective that’s really fun
the description of the whole thing being dispelled/obliterated is really cool! I am living for Brennan’s descriptions here
and finally, Marisha!
brumestone jewellery I am loving the description of all the opulence of Patia. also the nepotism
man Brennan is really making the point of these are the people who get shit done, this is where the power lies really well here
sorry the oracles are taking a break????? surely that’s not fucking good!
I love the general disdain everyone has for people attempting the Raven Queen’s ritual
I also love how they’re all casually namedropping vespin fucking chloras as though he’s just..... some dude. which I guess he is right now!
oh also I like how everyone’s storylines are tying together! I initially assumed we would have a bunch of strangers but this makes way more sense and is much more fun
a party! exclusive magic VIP seating! hoddmedods or whatever the fuck! chandeliers and caviar, the world can’t touch us here!
Zerxus’ son is staying with Nydas’ family? wtf this gets more and more intriguing
lol bringing along Bolo is the most fancy rich important person move, great work Loquacious. also Brennan is a delight
“Ghor Dranas is attributed to the Lord of the Hells, a specific phrasing during his defeat. "Put me where you will, I will gather my shadows to me.” oh my god that is an incredible line. I had not considered the phrase ‘gathering of shadows’ in any other context I love that
Loquacious inspiring Laerryn and the perfume smells like their wedding. excuse me who gave you permission to do this to me.
oh cool the piece of metal is the bow of a solar. made of extraplanar gold. and it was destroyed by something older and deeper than a spell. this is vespin summoning a goddamn betrayer to destroy it fucking hell. this is fine.
PURVON SUUL!!!!!!!
absolutely a joy to watch Sam, Travis and Marisha lose their entire shit as he walks in
Aabria knows what’s up, “I’ll tell you later”
“is he wearing armour” “... no” I am loving this so much
I love how Dean Hollow’s thing of “well this god was one of us before, so we can join them too”. Like the context to the mages’ hubris is so well done and it makes sense!
“And Purvon Suul walks away” need a live Liam cam for this, how’s he reacting to this signature move of apparently all champions of the Raven Queen
the hoddmedod 1 has thoughts and 2 is thinking ghor dranas everything is super fine and ok
Loq taking back what he said with gift of gab... what a spell I love it
okay okay what everyone has been talking about: Cerrit’s 31 on investigation and Brennan’s absolutely genius description of invisibility
I am not gonna lie both the way he’s described invisibility working from a physics standpoint and the delivery of “You have been trained to look for these things. They always move in twos.” will be in my head for a very long time
a stitched together man wtf
“You will never reach the Wildmother’s embrace in time” sorry WHAT. what is happening. excuse me.
and Vespin fucking Chloras is behind the mirror???
holy shit what an episode
okay last thoughts: so much lore, but it’s delivered in such a good way! like I didn’t feel the story stalling or anything it was actually such a fast paced episode! I adored the world building, the feel of Avalir and of the circle of brass as a whole, it’s done so well. and the characters are extremely intriguing
also I know Brennan is amazing and I loved his worldbuilding in eg Unsleeping City, but holy shit has he blown it out of the water with the tension and the pace and the worldbuilding and the threads of mystery and feel of something going wrong here. masterful tension building I adore it
I am so excited this may become my favourite mini-series. cannot wait to see where this goes

I desperately need the conclusion to ExU calamity, I mean we know how it ends but I need to know how it ends for these people specifically. I have thought about nothing else since the first episode. But man I have never felt more impending dread for something that I want so much. I know it’s going to hurt me. I’m so invested in these characters even though we have had such a short time with them but they are just played so well and with so much depth it feels like I have known them for a long time. Seeing what happens to them is going to be brutal. But gods above I know it’s going to be good. It’s going to hurt in the best way possible and I’m going to watch it multiple times no matter how long it is

Once upon a time…
an exu: calamity fic
Once upon a time, there was… a dragon. A family. A pair of knights. A fey. A mage. A man.
Once upon a time, there was a dragon.
He was the last of his kind—all of his brethren had fled, believing their hoards of gold and jewels to be more important than the people they were supposed to protect.
This dragon was different. He knew that all the gold in the world could not save them if they did not use it—what good was it stashed away in a cave?
Instead, this dragon turned to the people, and they became his hoard instead. He protected them with the ferocity of any dragon protecting their hoard. He protected them because he knew they were more valuable than any treasure.
His brethren turned their backs on him, unable to understand why he relinquished his gold for something as trivial as life.
But life is never trivial. It is the most important treasure we have.
Once upon a time, there was a family.
Some might’ve called them the most powerful family in the world. They certainly were smart, and always hungry for more knowledge. They collected information and secrets like dragons collecting treasure—refusing to share any of it, believing only they could be trusted to keep the secrets of the world safe.
After all, who knows what people might do if they had the whole picture?
Who knows what people might do if they only had a piece?
They clung tightly to their knowledge, but it could not save them. What use is information if it is not shared?
In the end, they realized they could not keep it all for themselves. For when they died, all their knowledge would die with them. They shared their knowledge with the world, and hoped that they hadn’t ruined it by waiting too long.
Once upon a time, there were a pair of knights.
These knights were the bravest men in the world. Strong, courageous, willing to face danger so that no one else would have to.
At the heart of their strength was their love for each other. It made them stronger, more willing to fight. Nothing could separate them, as they would always fight to return to each other.
These knights loved each other, but they also loved the world. Their compassion knew no bounds. They would get pushed down, and would turn back to help those who pushed them.
Their shared compassion was what brought them together in the first place—the belief that everyone should be protected.
The belief that everyone could be redeemed.
Once upon a time, there was a fey.
He was charming, clever, curious, like all fey are. He came to our world in search of secrets—not to keep them, but to share them.
Instead, he found love.
The land of the fey are strange, resplendent, beautiful. It’s hard to imagine why someone would choose the mortal world over all of that. But this fey fell in love not because of beauty—though the mortal he fell for certainly was beautiful—he fell in love with her mind.
She was sharp, bright, curious. Always wanting to push the boundaries of what was possible. He fell in love with her courage, her determination, her unwavering conviction. Even though in the end, that was what doomed them all.
Still, he never left her side. All the beauty in the world could not pry him away from her.
He chose dying in the mortal world over an eternity in the fey because he could not bear to leave his love’s side.
Once upon a time, there was a mage.
The smartest mage the world had ever known. She saw not only what was present, but what could be possible if they tried. She never settled for anything less than perfect. It had to be perfect.
She wanted so much, but in the end her dreams were too big, and her life too short. She always looked at what could be accomplished, never stopping to think if she should.
The endless possibilities she saw blinded her to the truth for too long, and when she finally saw past them and realized what happened, it was too late. Still, she tried to fix it.
She was the smartest mage the world had ever known. She created this mess, she could get them out of it.
She couldn’t save everyone, but she could save some, and that was enough.
Once upon a time, there was a man.
A mortal man who lived in a city of mages—yet with no magic himself. Who needed magic when you had the sharpest eyes in the world?
This man looked down on the world around him, keeping an eye out over the people he protected. Nothing ever escaped his notice.
And yet, for all he kept watch below him, he never thought to look up.
There was nothing up there except the wild dreams of mages that could never come to fruition. Ideas and aspirations that he’d seen crumble a thousand times before. He didn’t bother with what he couldn’t control.
But sometimes you need to look up in order to prepare for what might come.
Once upon a time, there was a group of friends.
Disparate pieces mashed together by chance and circumstance. Each with knowledge and expertise in different areas, they worked together to build something beautiful. They sat and talked and laughed and still managed to get work done.
But they kept secrets from each other, and that tore them apart.
They scattered, and for a moment, all hope was lost. No longer able to trust or rely on each other, they didn’t know what to do—and so they ran.
But they returned—they had to. They had one more job to do, and now there were no more secrets holding them back.
In the end, the secrets exacted their price, and every one of them paid.
After all, your legacy is not the secrets you keep, it’s the secrets you tell.

My critical role c3 prediction is that it will eventually turn out that Delilah needs Laudna far more than Laudna needs Delilah.....I'm putting my money on Delilah lying about being where Laudna's powers come from. I'm betting Delilah is conning her for some traditional villain end goal like.....ending the world or whatever. But I'm betting on a "you have no power over me, do you?" kind of revelation for our girl

Odd request: I have a middle school student with close family ties to Romania who has been saying some anti-Romani stuff in my hearing. I talked to him and he said he would be open to reading something about the history of Romano discrimination if I gave it to him. Does anyone know of a clear, articulate source I could give him? He's very clever, but I think his extended family might have fostered this prejudice. This isn't the first time he's trusted me to put a better source in his hands to counter some attitudes he's heard elsewhere, so there's solid hope for him to turn it around.

it occurs to me that if mortals can become prime deities and betrayer gods, it sort of implies that those prime deities and betrayer gods might themselves be mortals from Somewhere Else. this might be obvious, but I had always thought of the gods as being like "High Unknowable Powers From Elsewhere" when they might actually be "Somnovum With A Better Plan."

I also really like how without a cleric, a super advanced DND world directs its energies to like. Other means of preservation. But also like. How a dead husband is dead and gone, not someone who can be revived or resurrected. It's cool how Avalir can do just about anything but get your dead husband back when like. A normal DND party in modern Exandria would just go get some diamonds for their cleric.

One of the things I love most about victorian literature —one of the biggest reasons I did my PhD in it actually —is how many families are like "this is Miriam and the man who is in love with Miriam but she didn't marry and this is Miriam's husband Robert and the man he actually is in love with, William, and William's younger sister who has Ideas and William's mother who wants the dude in love with Miriam to marry the sister..." and they all are in one big house. No wonder they didn't invent tv, that's all I'm saying.

Spoilers for Critical Role Campaign 3 Episode 34
After watching episode 33 last week, I knew tonight's episode was going to ruin me. But I didn't expect it would the way it did. Watching Imogens face as she dealt with the death of her best friend and someone she loved and treasured was horrible. Laura seemed truly heartbroken as she played it out. It never even occurred to me that Marisha would roll a Nat 1 on her death saves and Laudna would actually die. I was just so scared and worried about Fearne and Orym.
I also truly felt so sorry for Ashley, making the choice on who to save between 2 of the party members. If only some else had revify or if Sam had any spell slots left.
But most of all, I commend Marisha. Not once did she try to sway anyone in making the decision to bring her character back. In fact, she didn't even say anything about it. She just told everyone that she wanted to stay out of the groups decision.
And while I am extremely relieved that Fearne and Orym survived, I really am gonna miss Laudna. It's gonna be hard not seeing Marisha at the table next week until the party either find someone who can bring Laudna back or a new character gets introduced. The undead is now dead.

Hi! I’ve watched a lot of dimension 20 and never watched an episode of critical role, but I’m really curious about the cr miniseries with lou wilson, aabriya Iyengar, and brennan et al, will it make sense if I watch exu as a stand-alone? Is it more of a “you’ll enjoy it more if you know the world” or do I absolutely need to have watched some other stuff to even grasp what’s going on?
Hi! I had a similar situation when I first wanted to watch CR having not seen Campaign 1 and 2 but after doing some research I learned I didnt need to have watched any before getting into it. And fortunatly, EXU Calamity is technically a prequal to all the other CR main Campaign stuff so you dont really need to know much in order to watch. All you need to know is that the Calamity was a War fought hundreds of years before the begining of Campaign 1 and no matter what happens in the miniseries, its still gonna happen cause if it doesnt then the whole history of Exandria (the wonderful World created by Matthew Mercer) technically wont exsist. I will say there is a few nods to somethings that happen in Campaign 1 that I didnt completely understand but it in no way took any enjoyment or understanding from this particular storyline.
So in conclusion, no you dont have to have seen anything from past CR episodes to watch Exu Calamity. If you really want to, there are many videos, blog posts, articles, and even a whole Wiki dedicated to Critical Role where eveything can be explained in further detail if you really want to know more.
I'm also going to say that if you love Dimension 20 and its cast members, you will love CR, and youre gonna absolutely fall in love with Travis Willingham, Sam Reigal, and Marisha Ray.
Hope this helps and makes sense! If you have anymore questions, feel free to drop me a message and Ill help any way I can!!
(Edit: just going to add as well that CR streams first on Twitch at 7pm PDT on Thursdays and then up loads the episode onto YouTube on Mondays at 12pm PDT. I wait until the Monday upload cause of timezones 🙂)

Critical Role Campaign 3 Episode 33 Spoilers Ahead!
Not me just quietly sobbing for the past hour from the most recent episode of Critical Role. The thought of losing both Orym and Fearne is leaving me heartbroken. They're both my favourite characters in the party! I don't wanna say goodbye to them yet! I also don't want to wait a week to find out what happens. I cant imagine how Liam and Ashley are feeling about all of this either.
And what if they do both stay dead. Whos gonna tell Dorian?? Or even the rest of the Crown Keepers?? Or Fearne's family?? Or Keyleth and the Air Ashari??
But all that aside, it was otherwise a fantastic episode. It kept me at the edge of my seat for nearly 4 hours. And it was such an emotional roller-coaster, what with the seige and getting Treshi out and then the horrible boss fight with Ottahan. Matt Mercer, I salut you. You are one incredible Dm!

My #1 post of 2022
I'm only recently getting into Critical Role but I've been a fan of Dimension 20 for over a year now and watching Brennan GM for CR is amazing. His style is so obviously different from Matt and Aabria, who are both very talented GM's in their own right. But theres something in the way each player at the table gets so enthralled by what he's saying that is just so beautiful. The way Brennan tells a story, how he pitches his voice, every inflection on his words is just pure talent. He really is a born storyteller and I'm glad those in the Critical Role fandom who aren't apart of D20's and arent familar with Brennan get to experience it

Exu calamity is just the right length for me to hold my attention and catch up before I loose interest or find something else interesting. I don't know if I would be interested in other campaigns, and sadly I didn't knew about d&d for much of my life. Do you have any tips, I saw you ended campaign 2, I'm not sure, so maybe there's anything that you know could help? Also, just out of curiosity, would you ever want to buy any merch? I'm thinking about it, but I haven't started watching anything after all, I hope they'll have something for Calamity at least. Probably not.
Ok, easy one first: I have bought Critical Role merch, since I can actually afford it by this point, and it's all about the Mighty Nein, and every time I wear it or put my groceries into it, it's giving me so much joy. Very good decision. I think they have one calamity shirt right now, but I can't remember for which one of the charaters.
As for staying and finishing a campaign, man, I feel ya. It took me years to finish campaign two. I was getting into the beginning, and then I didn't watch for a year or more, and then I started again right with a very significant thing in the first part of the campaign, and that's what kept me hooked to the end, although it took ages. I guess my advice is not to force it? Watch however long you want to, it'll always be there when you return. I know people who do not even finish one episode in one session, and that's completely ok.
Or, if you want something that's a lot easier to get into, because the episodes are only 2 hours at most, hop over to Dimension 20 and watch Brennan do his thing. I am binging Fantasy High atm, and it's easily the most entertaining and engaging thing I have watched since exu calamity itself 😉. It has the same BLM GM style of high-energy rule-of-cool play, and the players are really good, too. And it's only 17 episodes total, so easily doable.

the official mell0bee campaign 3 predictions/wishlist (let’s be real here mostly wishlist)
that one post abt gay ppl talking abt the next critrole campaign like its the superbowl is correct
also i wrote the majority of these in may but never posted it
SAM RIEGEL PLAYS A CLERIC. this is not a prediction this is a THREAT.
i made a whole powerpoint about this i think u guys already understand why lol
specifically i think knowledge domain would be so cool for sam (and also i love knowledge domain so i am biased)
ashley johnson plays a bard (or at least SOMEONE plays a bard)
someone plays a full paladin not just multiclass (marisha!!! laura!!!)
someone plays an artificer (travis!!)
someone plays a fighter (personally rooting for eldritch knight they’re so cool)
oh man i only got 2 more classes left huh i may as well throw my hat in the ring, i think druid/sorcerer and rogue/monk??? idk who would play what tho.
ok obviously this is not gonna be the lineup and idk if this party is balanced but FOR SURE i think they’re gonna be more healy after only having one healer at the start of C2 shbfnfj
SOMEONE PLAY A WARFORGED/AEORMATON pls i wanna see it
someone should play a changeling it would be funny
i’m not sure of guidelines in LA but i really hope the setup is the group is back at the table again but it’s still prerecorded (live closed captioned and prerecorded talks machina, my beloved)
idk what the seating chart will be. i sure hope it is chaos. (i saw a post a while back that was like the Ideal Seating Chart pairing everyone with people they haven’t sat next to before + for the Peak Chaos the but i forget it F)
i really hope laura and sam get to sit near each other again though
set in a new continent, i think vasselheim would be very cool but honestly anywhere we go i will not complain
i think a bunch of agnostics on the God Continent would be a cool contrast to C2 where half the party worshipped illegal gods
yknow i was gonna say they start at level 3+? maybe? i am not sure if that’s matt’s style but they could wanna do something different than c2
i thought that there wasn’t going to be as much of a timeskip compared to VM to MN but honestly with exu there might be? say like 8-10 yrs after exu takes place or something, so uh a While after the MN
i would say they might play pre-calamity too but that just seems like a worldbuilding mess for matt so maybe not
someone better play a pair of siblings. it will make me very happy.
someone plays the opposite gender (i think maybe liam)
someone other than sam (alongside sam?) plays a tiny character (pls guys it’s so fun)
also laura’s character continues to be underneath 5’5, small character or nah (but yes pls play a small character that would make me so happy)
as for ppl who i want to have backstories together: travis and sam, liam and marisha, so then tal and laura or laura and ashley
laura and sam would also be good
(yes i am saying travis and sam should play the siblings)
also ashley and liam would be very good too
marisha has a high charisma modifier!!!
sam is tiny again (i think it would be funny). also definitively does not have any children. no kids. not for sam. someone else can have a kid.
LET LAURA GO FERAL. I WANNA SEE HER HIT THINGS AND JUST BE UNHINGED.
both of liam’s PC’s parents are ALIVE AND WELL AND GOOD PARENTS. also a hit die higher than a d6 and a positive CON modifier dear lord liam you know the most times KO’d on critrolestats is not a competition right
opposite of liam. i want travis to try a glass canon for once. also if he is not an artificer i want him to be a full spellcaster it would be so good!!
honestly all i want from ashley is for her to be there the whole campaign, no work taking her away from it (and maybe playing a more outgoing character! if she feels comfortable!!)
and idek what to expect from talesin at this point i am sure his character will bring out some sort of morality crisis in me tho (they always do and i love him for it)
also tangential, and idk if it will happen but someone playing an aroace character or just generally an aspec character would make me an aroace very happy :>
i feel like getting some form of queer characters is a given and obviously i want that and any form of rep but aspec rep is so rare and cad is! so good!
also let liam and sam romance each other 2k21
