Seeking advice on beta-editing: how to be a gentle, but effective, beta reader?

To make a long story short--

I beta read a fic for a close friend of mine. Although I think they are a talented writer, they have a couple of consistent and major grammatical issues--excessive use of passive voice, some issues with grammar in dialogue, and a tendency towards purple prose and run-on sentences.

I know it sounds like I have a lot of issues with my friend's style, but I don't come from a writing background, and so I have a strong tendency towards succinct writing, maybe to a fault. It's my understanding that prose has different rules than technical writing--i.e., I'm inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt in terms of writing style.

When I beta read for my friend, they tend to get upset/frustrated when I pull apart all of their grammatical issues, so I let some things slide. The way I see it, it's all for fun, and their readers enjoy her work (as do I), so it's not the end of the world.

That being said, is there any way to (gently) point out their tendencies towards purple prose and passive voice? Those are definitely two things that bother me about their writing, but I feel uncomfortable broaching the subject to them because I worry that they'll feel like I'm attacking them as a writer. This friendship is important to me.

My question is: what would you do? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
