I’ve avoided making any posts about our country’s recent challenges. In the middle of a crisis, it’s easy to get stuck in the negative. But we can’t let ourselves do that. I know that we all want to see a Haiti where resources are managed in a way that benefits everyone. But I also know that there are many people who do not want resolutions to these issues. I know what it’s like to feel like you have no control over the situation and wanting to find someone else to blame but in order for us all to face this together and make a difference, we need to change our mindset about what’s possible in this moment. We need to start thinking about what WE can do NOW instead of waiting for someone else to do it for us. We need to make sure that we are building up our resilience and strength—so that when challenges arise, we can handle them with grace and dignity, instead of breaking down in fear. Let’s come together to find real solutions via a multifaceted approach. Everything is connected and no one part can improve without cooperation of the whole. Ayibobo! . . . I’ve posted a few thanks to the crew of volunteers and supporters creating holiday gifts for a number of youth in our community. It is our hope for each gift to feel special with something homemade, something yummy, and something practical. One of our supporters is a gifted (and efficient) knitter and this year Anne, with help from Kara, created a beautiful selection of head-ware to be include in our gifts. Another key component of a holiday gift (in my opinion) is edible treats so, in addition to homemade bits and bites, Suzanne organized a troop of cookie elves. Lots of little hands make light work. I received great help from 2-4yr olds yesterday. With focus, they weeded, added compost, planted strawberries, garlic, and shelled beans.A teacher said. "They could have shelled beans for hours". Ha! I think there may have been one or two that could have. A key I use teaching is to break up several connecting activities, while highlighting senses, and move through our space with hands on learning with context. Having purpose, learning skills, and sharing in the excitement keeps us flowing. Directed learning at this young age is not a perfect model for every being. (There are no perfect models) Timing and many other factors are in play as well. Some little people just need to move and explore without close parameters, just like us all. But also like us all, I'd say lots of little people also need/ want "lightly" guided times to be purposefully engaging and growing with the world around them. These class/ wkshps had students this young engaged for over 45min. Even though I don't teach at the school often I teach here seasonally and throughout the year. And speaking of our village helping us to bring holiday cheer to some local youth .... With the kind and thoughtful support of Murray at Geerlinks Home Hardware, our gifts included a couple of very practical items; a good-sized pot with lid and a sturdy can opener. We even included a few of our favourite, well-tested soup recipes. And our generous friends at the St. Thomas Railway City Rotary Club rallied once again to provide enough Giant Tiger gift cards to add to each gift as well as some further donations. This hardworking team of dedicated folks gives to the community through volunteering, and then gives a second time when there are proceeds to be shared.
