“A sap-run is the sweet good-by of winter. It is the fruit of the equal marriage of the sun and frost.”

no because what really terrifies me about Stardew is that the fucking maple trees produce syrup year round. forgetting the fact that they produce syrup without you having to boil sap to make it, maple trees just shouldn’t be able to do that. they have different growth functions that operate at certain times of year as they cycle through the seasons and sugaring season is only for a small window of time between winter and full-fledged spring. too cold and the sap won’t thaw. too warm and the tree starts diverting energy to budding, which means all the sugar you find in the sap during sugaring season is going towards leaf growth. little to no sugar = bitter yucky syrup/no syrup. for sap to keep running, you have to have days just above freezing (32-55ish degrees F) and nights below freezing (anything below 32 degrees F). which means this is either how Pelican Town is year round or something else is afoot. and those maple trees would never have leaves if their sap was always sugary enough to be boiled into syrup, which means they would like die within idk a week? a month? without photosynthesis. they simply could not sustain themselves unless they had some other magical mechanism performing cryosuction for them while they also grow leaves and photosynthesize in the warmer months. and they’d need so much more fucking sugar. what are these trees, living thermoses? i just. i get it, it’s a game. but climate-wise, what in the fresh fuck.

For the first time, I am attempting to tap the maples on my property. At least, the three big ones. The first tree I tapped started dripping sap immediately, just as I expected/was told it would. But the other two... the third one I tapped DID drip but WAY slower, and the biggest maple... nothing. I'm hoping she just hasn't woken up yet, since it's only JUST getting above freezing as of like 2-3 days ago (and still it snowed yesterday). I left the spiles in and the buckets on, so we'll see if she wakes up as it warms up here.
I'm a little excited to try this out. I know with only 3 trees I won't get a ton, but it's more about the learning experience at this point. Being able to have maple sugar from my own property would be cool.
#personal#longfeather lane#maple syrup#maple sugar adventure#Of course Jude and I immediately tasted the sap#it tastes basically like water with the barest hint of sweet#which is pretty much what I expected#but it's completely clear which idk why i didn't expect that but I didn't

the major appeal of the Corn Maze is tapping into the human experience of Being Surrounded By Maize During Harvest . i love you corn and i love walking in circles under an autumn sun while you rustle gently and smell exactly as you always have for the past many hundreds of years at this same time in this same spot. effervescent
#i love where i live. at all times of the year there's always some ancient simple thing that direct-hits the timeless human experience button#me in the wintertime: wow for thousands of years we have huddled in shelters and put wood on the fire and thought about spring#me in the spring: wow for thousands of years someone has gone out and tapped the first tree of the season and saved up the sap#me in the summer: wow for thousands of years somebody has weeded squash here. beans even#me in the fall: i have GOT to be surrounded by corn so i can feel exactly the way im supposed to at this time. in this place#like it's not my ancestral experience. im not from here. we were in abruzzo until like eighty years ago. they dont have corn there#but at this time in this place there is corn and there has always been corn in this place. and i get to experience that. how COOL#at this time in this place there are maple trees and eastern white pines and there have been those trees#since as long and longer as there have been humans to look at them here. how COOL#harvest technology changes. populations change peacefully and then forcefully . the climate changes and is changing now#but for now. and for a time before me. there's corn here. and everyone who was here walked around in the corn#and if we are lucky then five hundred years from now someone can still plant and stand in and listen to the rustle of the corn

Make [Natural] Granulated Sugars from Honey, Fruits and Tree Saps
Honey/Honey Sugar is the only natural sweetener not made from plants.
Many fruits, trees and plants contain natural sugar. Sugars from flowers and plants are mostly gathered by bees to make honey. Removing the moisture (by cooking or dehydration) from the sap/juice, then crushing the dry residue, produces granulated sugar to use for sweetening.

Sugar Shack Experience in 2025 April 18, 2025 We went to a sugar shack in April this year. April weather is ideal for maple syrup flow, which happens when nighttime temperatures are -5 °C and daytime highs are 5°C (24°F to 40°F). Such weather is a pleasure to walk about, especially in contrast with the much colder weather in February and March. I enjoy visiting maple sugar farms for their…
