Women Talking (dir. Sarah Polley) x VIFF 2022.
It’s a powerfully told adaptation about the infuriating effects of institutional patriarchy and communal sexual violence in a closed religious community where social control dictates behaviour. Despite the gravely serious material, Polley injects enough touching moments of genuine humour and reverence highlighting the strong will of the resilient characters while balancing the depravity of the situations these innocent women are forced into.
Premiered at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival as part of the Special Presentations program.

List of Met Galas since 2001
I've gotten a few asks for a list of Met Galas. Technically, the gala has existed since 1948, and been themed since 1973, but I started at 2001 to keep it short (there was no gala in 2000 apparently). If you're interested in every theme that's ever existed, there's a chart on Wikipedia.
Most lists online start somewhere around 2011-2013, since it wasn't covered by the press the same way before then.

Once heard…
*
…never quite forgotten.
Thrilling and chilling both: a wild lion, in broad daylight, proclaiming his eminence. And not a full-throated Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer lion-roar (there’s no big show of fearsome canines); more a weaponized grunt that carries across the Mara grassland and rebounds against my sternum. And then in my skull.
It takes some moments to re-ground, and assure the nervous system we’re…

ela nunca conseguiu juntar dinheiro.

Oh Silly Liareyes, Pressed Again
Appparently I’m also incredibly upset about the Max Mara “award” that’s so meaningless, I’d fully forgotten about it until I read it on her blog again, buuuuttt....
Dude, while I do not and have never received welfare, your hatred and contempt of poor people 9and mocking viewing them as literally subhuman) is utterly disgusting. It is not a character flaw to be poor (I’m not, but I also don’t view myself as inherently superior to them), it IS a character flaw (a huge one, in fact) to be that elitist and bourgeois, however.
As it is to be so willfully ignorant.....and glean your concepts of life from 1930s comic strips....
Oh and it this is about somebody else....my argument still stands, because that’s disgusting.
This is also hilarious.....still sooooo mad at Crotchi (and I don’t even like her). Her movie was no moar of a “flop” than PP’s.....andddd dude, your narrative that she arranges action for him is your most ridiculous to date. Even moar than PP as Chris Evans’s/John Mayer’s booty call!

DEN OF GEEK CRITICS PICKS
Django Unchained
The second of Quentin Tarantino’s revisionist history lessons, Django Unchained is a provocative, post-modern Western film that mixes the widescreen sensibilities of Sergio Leone with Tarantino’s own gonzo impulses to create something hyper-violent, subversively funny, and more than a bit uncomfortable. Jamie Foxx stars as a slave freed by a German bounty hunter played by Christoph Waltz. Waltz won an Oscar for his performance as the kind German that takes in the stoic but savvy Django as his partner. Together, they travel the pre-Civil War South, killing slavers and savage men. Eventually, they embark on a more personal mission, as Django intends to free his beloved wife from a sadistic plantation owner played by a scenery-chewing Leonardo DiCaprio. With anachronistic needle-drops, hands-over-eyes horrors, and more blood than a donation bank, Django Unchained is an epic, entertaining revenge fantasy for the ages.
Silver Linings Playbook
From director David O. Russell, Silver Linings Playbook is a screwball romantic comedy for the modern age. Despite inviting, yet livewire lead performances from Jennifer Lawerence and Bradley Cooper, Silver Linings Playbook really shines as an ensemble: Robert DeNiro, Jackie Weaver, Chris Tucker and Anupam Kher bring fully-realized characters to life in just a handful of scenes. Based on Matthew Quick’s novel of the same name, Silver Linings Playbook finds Bradley Cooper as a man who has been released from a psychiatric hospital a bit too soon. He’s frantically trying to prove that he’s bettered himself in an effort to win back his wife, but when he meets the equally unstable and filterless character played by Jennifer Lawerence, unusual sparks fly. Combining the familiar tropes of a sports film with unorthodox romantic leads, Silver Linings Playbook is a crowd-pleasing watch that creates harmony out of dysfunction.
Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations
It never mattered where Anthony Bourdain was going, we just wanted to be along for the ride. We lost the soulful, iconoclastic bad-boy of the culinary world far too soon, but he left behind a treasure trove of rewarding travelogues that tackled culture, social dynamics, and most importantly, food. Whether he was weighing in on a world-famous culinary hotspot or peeling back the curtain on a hole-in-wall gem, Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations was always thoughtful, fearless, and never less than authentic. It’s the rare show that is as educational as it is entertaining, hosted by a candid host who knew how to travel, knew where to eat, but most crucially, knew how to connect with people. Reality TV doesn’t get realer than this.
Halloween III: Season of the Witch
Following the mind-boggling success of the original Halloween, director John Carpenter had a clever idea. Instead of churning out sequels starring Michael Meyers, Halloween would become an anthology series, with each new film telling a spooky tale centered on the October holiday. The concept was inevitably scrapped, but Halloween III: Season of the Witch suggests that maybe Carpenter and co. should have stuck to their guns. Taking inspiration from Invasion of the Body Snatchers and working off a concept that Carpenter described as “witchcraft meets the computer age,” Halloween III: Season of the Witch finds a doctor and the daughter of a toy maker trying to uncover the horrifying truth behind the town of Santa Mara, home to Silver Shamrock, the world’s largest manufacturer of Halloween masks. Intelligent, surprising, and disturbing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch is due for a critical reevaluation that heralds it as one of the most ambitious horror movies of the ‘80s
Clerks II
With the recent announcement that Clerks III has started production, it’s the perfect time to revisit Kevin Smith’s first-sequel to his independent film phenomenon, Clerks. Clerks II picks up with our titular clerks Dante and Randall 10 years after the events of the first film. The Quick Stop has gone up in flames and been replaced with a Mooby’s fast food restaurant. Dante and Randall toil the day away with their sheltered co-worker Elias and too-cool for minimum wage manager Becky. While the film tackles adult male friendships and middle age complacency, it’s main appeal is still sitting around, shooting the shit with your pals and listening to their expletive-filled rants about Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, or whatever pop culture fascination that they’re hung up on. Come for the surprisingly poignant story about Dante deciding to leave his friend behind, stay for Jay, Silent Bob, and a donkey.

TEMPO: BRINGING UP BABY
November 30, 1953
Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz were on the cover of the November 30, 1953, issue of Tempo (volume 1, no. 26), a digest-sized weekly news magazine.
Tempo was published by Pocket Magazines Inc. and billed itself as “The Nation’s Only Pocket News Weekly.” It merged with Quick, another pocket-sized digest from the same publishers, to be known as Pocket & Quick magazine. Lucy and Desi often appeared on the cover of the original Quick, but the combined magazine leaned much more toward male readers, featuring pin-up girls.
The inside article (pages 35 and 36) is titled “Lucy & Desi: Bringing Up Baby” and discusses raising their newborn son, Desiderio Albert Arnaz IV (aka Desi Jr.), who was born ten and a half months earlier.
Photographs include candid shots of the proud parents with their children, as well as one of Desi holding the Mayer Twins who began playing the role at the start of November 1953.
The issue also contains photos and/or articles on Marilyn Monroe, Mitzi Gaynor, Betty Grable, Roy Rogers, Mara Corday, Jan Sterling, Judy Holliday, Corrine Calvet, Lauren Bacall, and others.
The same date this magazine appeared on newsstands, “I Love Lucy” premiered “Too Many Crooks” (ILL S3;E9). In it, Lucy thinks her friend and neighbor Ethel is the notorious Madame X, while Ethel suspects the same of her!
On November 30, 1953, Desi Arnaz threw a surprise 13th wedding anniversary party for Lucille Ball at Hollywood's glamorous Mocambo nightclub. After a towering cake was served, a TV set was wheeled in and guests watched (what else?) "I Love Lucy"!
Also on November 30, 1953, nationally syndicated columnist Bob Thomas reported on “I Love Lucy” after a brief interview with producer Jess Oppenheimer. This wasn’t the only publication to dwell on the ‘red scare’ experienced by Lucille Ball on September 11, 1953 when she was accused of being a communist.
Drew Pearson’s Washington Merry-Go-Round syndicated column offered a few theories on the controversy, bringing up Lucille Ball several times in the rather lengthy article.
Meanwhile, on that same Monday, Bob Farrell’s New York at Night Column contained this cryptic quip, possibly in response to questioning whether her children would also go into show business. At the time, Little Lucie was 2 and Desi Jr. was less than a year old! Time tells, however, that she was indeed “heir conditioned” as both her children went into show business as teenagers.
On November 30th, the Bradenton (FL) Herald bragged that the trailer used in The Long, Long Trailer would be on display at a local mobile home dealership! Although the film wouldn’t premiere for another month yet, the ‘trailer’ (pardon the pun) was already in movie theatres!
Catching up with the weekends happenings on the West Coast, a North Caroline newspaper reported on Monday the 30th that the Arnaz family had ‘thrown the switch’ to light up the Christmas trees of Santa Claus Lane in Hollywood. The event actually occurred two days earlier, on November 28, 1953. Other news outlets reported that Ball had ‘trouble’ turning on the lights, stating that only half of the trees initially lit up, with the remainder a few seconds later. Additionally, two streetcars stopped between the floodlights and the Arnaz family, putting them in virtual darkness just before the big moment. One report noted that it was like something out of a Lucille Ball script!
[Please note that all newspapers did not publish syndicated columns or event stories on the same date! The stories collected above reflect only the newspapers published on November 30, 1953, while other outlets may have published stories earlier or later.]

Hey there beauty queen
By Abrasheba & Lambsey ft. John Mayer for my beauty queen
Hey there beauty queen
You caused a scene
Drunken on the scene
Diagonally you sway and lean
With a sass so mean
Enthralling me in those jeans
You sure got good gene
Where you been
Are you from Mara the beauty queen
You wave to me with two hands clean
Is that annyeonghaseyo or sayonara
What did you say lala
You from Hokkaido not Osaka
Yeah you got a look that’s trademarked like lalala
Enjoy Coca-Cola lalalala
Sayonara
Sayonara
Sayonara
In a sailboat off Kanagawa
You wave sayonara
While I beg annyeonghaseyo to you na
That’s Corean for konnichiwa
Yeah na na na na
You wave sayonara
While I beg annyeonghaseyo to you na
That’s Corean for konnichiwa
Yeah na na na na
La lala la lala la lala…
La lala la lala la lala...
Hey there beauty queen
Which one is our scene
You wave to the Corean
While I stand here to be seen
Well that’s just mean
In Australia we’ll be keen
They’ll watch us on the screen
Like where you been
Like Mara the beauty queen
You wave to them with two hands clean
Is that annyeonghaseyo or sayonara
What did you say lala
You from Hokkaido not Osaka
Yeah you got a look that’s trademarked like lalala
Enjoy Coca-Cola lalalala
Sayonara
Sayonara
