The Staves perform an NPR Tiny Desk (Home) Concert of four songs from their new album, Good Woman—"Nothing's Gonna Happen," "Good Woman," "Satisfied," and "Waiting on Me to Change"—from the kitchen of their childhood home in Watford, England, for NPR Music. Sisters Emily, Jessica, and Camilla Staveley-Taylor are joined by guitarist and horn player Marcus Hamblett for the set. NPR's Bob Boilen says: "This stripped-down performance is a beautiful way to experience these sisters' gorgeous harmonies through their songs of strength, loss, life, and womanhood."

Well, it has certainly been an interesting time.....gigs have been VERY quiet, but a few records have come out recently. Two new releases on SLAM are out now. One of Alessandro Vicard’s fiendishly difficult to play music with Perlin Noise
And another with Viola Falb and Bernd Satzinger playing improvised music!
A session I did ages ago for the BBC with Marcus Hamblett and James Holden came out along with a limited edition physical release which is now sold out as I took too long to post about it...anyway, you can take a listen here:
BBC Sessions: Live at Maida Vale by James Holden, Marcus Hamblett and Mark Holub
And now, I even have a few gigs coming up...some which I am still not sure will happen, but some that almost definitely will! And in these strange times, I unearthed an amazing Led Bib set complete with video from 2014, which should be released online shortly...more soon!

James Holden - Imagine This Is A High Dimensional Space Of All Possibilities
“I wanted this to be my most open record, uncynical, naive, unguarded, the record teenage me wanted to make,” says electronic explorer James Holden of his generically unconstrained new album of rave music for a parallel universe 'Imagine This Is A High Dimensional Space Of All Possibilities'. “I used to balance my clock-radio on a wardrobe to catch the faint pirate FM signals from the nearest city, dreaming of what raves would be like when I could finally escape and become a New Age traveller. So it’s like a dream of rave, a fantasy about a transformative music culture that would make the world better. I guess it’s also a dialogue with that teenage me.” Standing in contrast to the expanded band and live take recordings of its predecessor 'The Animal Spirits' (“Dramatic, colourful and Holden’s fullest-sounding work yet” 9/10 Loud And Quiet), Holden’s fourth solo artist album is more of a continuous sound collage, artfully juxtaposing audio worlds in his own inimitable manner, with a respectful hat tip to the pastoral classics of his early nineties youth (notable mentions to The KLF’s timeless 'Chill Out', and the sprawling radio soundscapes of Future Sound of London). But where his first wave forebears pilfered freely from the history of recorded music to date, Holden’s sample sources are custom generated, drawn from recordings of his own performances on the modular synth, keyboard, organ and piano plus the lesser explored drones of his childhood violin, cut-up bass guitar, overblown recorder, all manner of percussive trinkets and the serendipity of the odd field recording, as well as guest contributions from various members of the wider Animal Spirits live family: long-time touring companion drummer Tom Page, tabla-championing percussionist Camilo Tirado, multi-instrumentalist for hire Marcus Hamblett (here, on double bass and guitar) and saxophonist Christopher Duffin (on loan from Xam Duo and Virginia Wing). 'Imagine This Is A High Dimensional Space of All Possibilities' will be released via Holden’s own proudly DIY Border Community label on 31st March 2023, on double vinyl, CD, digital download and streaming. For the album’s distinctive hand drawn artwork and accompanying twelve page comic booklet insert, Holden called upon Amsterdam-based illustrator and musician Jorge Velez to help flesh out the visual component of the immersive fantasy world that is conjured up in 'Imagine This Is A High Dimensional Space of All Possibilities'. The result is a twelve panel storyboard (one per track) documenting the rave rituals of an alternative reality populated by magical creatures, which owes much to the pair’s shared love of the soothing retro-futurist colour palettes of the late and truly great French cartoonist Moebius (included in pdf form exclusively with Bandcamp downloads). The Staves have released a stripped down, alternate version of "Failure," a song from their new album, Good Woman; it is the third in their Be Kind series of special singles. "We went into the studio with the wonderfully talented Marcus Hamblett (our bandmate and long-time collaborator) with the intention of revisiting some of the songs from Good Woman, to explore some of the more soft and tender parts that are there," the band says. The Staves will tour North America in early 2022.

Busy times....with a number of new releases coming up....Out this month is Alessandro Vicard’s Perlin Noise, out on SLAM Productions! We will be announcing some shows with that shortly too!
Also coming out on SLAM shortly will be a new improv trio recording with Viola Falb and Bernd Satzinger. Album is out in April(I think), but we are doing a sort of pre-launch (where we will have the CD) in March at the Blue Tomato in Vienna!
A recording I did quite awhile ago for the great BBC programme late junction, with Marcus Hamblett and James Holden is going to be released for record store day...more details soon! Also, there is a new Blueblut record to be released in May...!
AND - here is a little documentary about the latest Led Bib project. We are planning a short tour of cinemas which hopefully we can announce in the next month or so. Stay tuned for more!

James Holden & The Animal Spirits - Each Moment Like The First James Holden recently announced his third album recorded together with his newly-expanded band as James Holden & The Animal Spirits. The Animal Spirits will be released 3 November via his own Border Community label. Following the announcement and the sharing of the relentless, elastic and hypnotic polyrhythms of lead single 'Pass Through The Fire', today he has shared the second single to be taken from the album, 'Each Moment Like The First'. As the only track on the album not recorded in the one week-long mammoth live recording session with the full band, 'Each Moment Like The First' sits both as an anomaly and as a glimpse at the records core. The track's recording is the first time Holden played it with drummer Tom Page during an early rehearsal. "What you hear", says Holden, "is us making it up as we go along, playing melodies I hadn't written yet as they occurred to me, finding where the song wanted to go. And although we tried rerecording it later with more players and better mics, there was something untouchable about the truth of that first time." The idea of a musical recording capturing a unique moment in time which can't be recreated is central to Holden's personal recording dogma, and so this raw, stripped back - yet undeniably magical - rehearsal version of 'Each Moment Like The First' sits at the centre of the album, offering a revealing window into Holden & Page's improvisational process. The Animal Spirits will be the first full length release from Holden since 2013's critically lauded The Inheritors which saw top twenty 'Album of the Year' mentions from the likes of FACT, MOJO and Clash as well as #2 from Loud & Quiet and Resident Advisor's 'Album of the Year'. The band consists of long-time collaborators Tom Page (RocketNumberNine) and Etienne Jaumet as well as Marcus Hamblett, Liza Bec and Lascelle Gordon. Recorded live in one room in single takes and born out of the sheer unbridled joy of live performance, Holden’s third artist album The Animal Spirits is the momentous culmination of a radical transformation, as the former trailblazer of the early noughties computer music revolution is dramatically reborn as live musician and band leader. Holden also recently announced his first London show since 2015 at Islington Assembly Hall on 6 December as well as his curated stage at this year's Le Guess Who? with artists including Maâlem Houssam Guinia & Band, Sex Swing, Hieroglyphic Being and Mario Batkovic. Worldwide distribution by [PIAS] UK. US distribution via Forced Exposure.
