Pre-Patagonia tales: Trekking no.2

The second test trekking before the Patagonia trip was quite successful and interesting. Now some boring wording to post a selection of the photos I shoot today.

Piani di Pezza is less than two hours by car from Rome and it is just behind Campofelice ski area. In theory there is a meteorite crater in the middle of the plain but we didn’t know that during the trekking and some research about it led to an article excluding it was a meteorite impact.

I was trekking with Michele and the main objective was to test the equipment before leaving for Patagonia.

The actual trekking was about two hours up, lunch break and an hour something down.

We pick the location looking at the Monte Sirente-Velino National Park website but than we totally ignore the marked tracks and we decided to start walking uphill.

Going up was difficult due to being fat and inexperienced, unstable gravel all the way through and some nice big cows eating. The view on Piani di Pezza was always amazing.

I was hoping to reach the peak of the hill (technically a mountain but, cmon...) but we didn’t managed to get farest than 3/4 of it.

The biggest surprise was the Canon 70-200 with 2x multiplier. Really handy and not impossible to use on free hand, this photo was shouted at f/14 1/1000 ISO 1000 400mm (200mm 2x). Sharpness is totally fucked up but the photo was not shaky at all. 

I liked my new sony A7r II, especially with Irina’s fish-eye, a Canon lens that works perfectly with the metabones mk5. Look at my beguiling belly up there... wow.

Another lens that surprised me was my (very) old Zuiko 50mm. I stole that lens a lot of years ago from my mom camera and I found the manual focus quite simple with the sony AF peak function.

We also played with Michele’s drone (but he will never send the footage...)

Now some more boring things about what went well and what I am still missing.

1) Everything I was wearing was great. Pants, soft shell, hard shell, pile-jacket (mh, maybe), t-shirt, etc... I spent a lot of time and money in buying all this stuff and I am really happy about it. (shitty phone photo of some of the clothes)

2) The camera bag (Lowepro ProTactic 350 AW) is amazing. Small and tough, can fit all my lenses and the soft shell. It is covered by strings and secure stuff to it is really simple.

3) I love insects and animals that wants to be photographed.

4) I feel I need a 100mm macro lens, even though this mantis crop is not that shitfull.

5) I still have no clue how to pack all my stuff. But honestly, who cares?

6) There are A LOT more accessories I need I cannot afford anymore. Like:

Camera screen glass

Camera neck laces

Camera belt/3point holder

UV and polarizer filters for all my lenses

ND filters for all my lenses

Snap-hooks and strips to attach stuff to my bag

Waterproof bags to put stuff to be attached with snap-hooks

Something to hold my sunglasses

USB battery pack

SDCard reader
