I went from only two winter coat sets to having a lot more cold weather wear. Since I sold Samantha's Beforever coat, everything except for Rebecca's outfit is new.

Went with the calico dress for Julie since she wore the casual outfit a few months ago. Also since I had Kaya wearing her winter accessories previously, she gets to wear the fancy shawl this time.

The hardest to dress was Kirsten because her fingers kept catching the sweater. Hardest to pose was Maryellen, whose skates I think have permanently scratched my dresser.

It was a close race between Kirsten’s winter woolens and skating outfit, but Lindsey’s Valentine’s party outfit had a strong lead all the way.

Voyage on the Great Titanic: The Diary of Margaret Ann Brady was my favorite Dear America story when I was a kid, so when I came across the doll of her on eBay for cheap, I had to pick her up. Unfortunately, the original doll (by Madame Alexander) had a lot of problems that weren’t obvious in the listing, so I put her dress on Ruthie instead! (with an off-brand hair ribbon and tights) I always imagined Margaret to have dark hair anyway. I love this dress so much. It’s really well made.

‘A HOLIDAY SPECTACULAR’ REVIEW

‘A Holiday Spectacular’ was written by Julie Sherman Wolfe and directed by John Putch. The cast featured Ginna Claire Mason, Derek Klena, Eve Plumb, Stephen DeRosa, Ann-Margret, Elle Graper, Bryon Jennings, Carolyn McCormick, Sara Gallos, Dylan S Wallach, the Radio City’s Rockettes and more!

The film sets in present day with an Older Margaret with her granddaughter Lucy (Elle Graper), who is going to audition at the Radio City as Clara in ‘The Nutcracker’. To calm Lucy’s anxiety and fears, Margaret decides to tell her secret, that’s where we suddenly go back to the year of 1958 in Philadelphia. Young Margaret is part of the Philadelphia wealthy high society and is expected to be married into the well known prominent family. But she feels stuck with the wedding plans, so she makes a sudden decision to go to New York City to fulfill her dream to become one of the iconic Radio City’s Rockettes after seeing them on Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade on her television.

Ginna Claire Mason as Margaret is absolutely divine to watch. She’s funny, ambitious, driven and confident. In the film, we see a stark contrast of both worlds, as a wealthy Philadelphia socialite and a Rockette; a loveless engagement to a man who hardly knew anything about her, and picturing the idea of the “perfect” wife would be like once she’s married. Then there’s other world where she is more comfortable and content in the city, surrounded by a group of ladies in a boarding house for the Rockettes and we see that there’s a huge weight off of her shoulders by dancing on stage every night rather than having her head in amounts of stressful planning for the upcoming wedding.

During her time in the city, she meets several people throughout her journey. Sofia; her talkative, bubbly, hilarious roommate and best friend, who is portrayed by Sara Gallos. We can see that she was clearly having a ball playing the part. Alice (Tiffany Denise Hobbs) and Janet (Larissa Schmitz) are among in the supportive sisterhood of the Rockettes. It’s neat to find a little tidbits of the side-characters and their story in the film. And how they all bond with each other on and off-stage due to how much they relate to one to another especially they are going down the same pathway to perform as a Rockette.

There’s several great scenes with Maggie and the Rockettes where we see how hard they work on stage and how precise each dance move has to be with certain timing of the song or how quickly they have to change into another costume by helping each other out after running off the stage. To relate to the previous paragraph, not only we see the main characters bond, we see every single Rockette bond together as sisters on stage especially the kick-line sequences!

Derek Klena who plays John Slater who is an aspiring photographer who has dreams of going to a NYU to become a photo journalist even though he is working at his father’s shop in the city while he is off-duty from the Navy. Derek is so charismatic, charming and determined in this film! Audiences will definitely fall in love with him fast, like how Margaret did in this film.

Throughout the film, we see Maggie and John’s relationship blossoming within days of meeting each other on the streets of New York. They gave each other’s support and inspiration by their respective love for photography and dancing, going for their dreams even though their parents seem to think it’s completely impossible and they want their children to carry on the family’s name and legacy whether it’s business related or money. Derek and Ginna Claire’s chemistry is really lovely to watch on screen. They bounce each off so well with witty one-liners, slow dancing in the snow, and stealing glances throughout the film.

Eve Plumb (Brady Bunch) and Stephen DeRosa (Boardwalk Empire) played John’s adorable but strong-willed parents. Carolyn McCormick (Law and Order) and Bryon Jennings (Lincoln) portrayed as Margaret’s strict and pompous parents. Can’t imagine what imagine was it like to have the actors to have such iconic and well known stars to play as their parents or even as an older Margaret who was portrayed by Ann-Margret (Viva Las Vegas and Bye-Bye Birdie).

We get the taste of glitter and glamour in the film with pretty iconic and stunning costumes on the Rockettes. Not only that, throughout the film, we get the vibes of ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ or ‘Rare Window’ or ‘A Star Is Born’ with the gorgeous, dreamy, bright and stylish 1950’s costumes by Keith Costumes! And the music score in the film was amazing especially during when she’s on stage with Rockettes and poignant/sentimental scenes.

‘A Holiday Spectacular’ is a wonderful movie that give us all the nostalgic and holiday feels upon watching the film. The message in the film was strongly expressed that we should be ourselves, go for what makes you happy and achieve your goals/dreams no matter what anyone says. Be surrounded by the people who know and love you for who are. Julie Sherman Wolfe did a beautiful job with the script and John Putch did a great job with the directing especially it was filmed for a short period of time. ‘A Holiday Spectacular’ had a bit more theatrical feel than the traditional Hallmark movies, even though it still had a few cheesy moments but overall the reviews and tweets from various audience members and critics say that it was really great and heartwarming Christmas film to watch. 2023 in Books, Part 1

I honored my New Year's Eve tradition of ranking the books I read throughout the year. This time I decided to split up the children's and YA books from the books for adults, because I don't think it's quite fair to compare them when they have two different audiences and often two different goals (and also when I so strongly prefer books for adults). It's like comparing apples and oranges. So here is Part 1: The Books for Young 'Uns.

As usual, this list is ranked strictly by personal preference, not by quality of writing or story, and they're based entirely on how I'm feeling right now. I reserve the right to change my mind at any time, so the list might be different next week. Cover images taken from GoodReads.

6. How Rory Thorne Destroyed the Multiverse by K. Eason Dates Read: Jan. 26-29 GoodReads Rating: Three stars Summary: I think it’s Sleeping Beauty in space? Maybe? One-sentence review: I remember next to nothing about this book but here was what I said on GR: It was kind of like if Princess Leia was an amalgamation for western fairy tale princesses and her life was being narrated by lemony snicket as a historian.

5. Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan Dates Read: I didn’t record it but it was early this year. GoodReads Rating: Three stars Summary: A woman named Sarah arrives in the prairie in the 1800s to decide if she wants to marry a widower with two children. Told from the oldest daughter’s point of view. One-sentence review: This isn’t fair for a children’s book, but I really wanted the adult version of this story, from Sarah’s point of view.

4. Eleanor by Kristiana Gregory. Part of the Royal Diaries series Dates Read: April 2 GoodReads Rating: Three stars Summary: A fictionalized account of Eleanor of Aquitaine’s life as a teenager, covering the death of her father and ending with her marriage to Louis, future king of France. One-sentence review: Eleanor and her sister, Petra, are great fun, and Gregory does a fantastic job of foreshadowing the things that are going to be important to Eleanor, like chivalric ideals and patronage of the arts, but like many of these Royal Diaries books, it focuses on the least interesting part of this extraordinary figure’s life.

3. The Great Railroad Race: The Diary of Libby West by Kristiana Gregory Dates Read: Dec. 31 GoodReads Rating: Three stars Summary: The diary of a teenage girl who’s family moves west so her journalist father (and unofficial editor mother) can cover the great railroad race between the Union Pacific and Central Pacific companies. One-sentence review: I loved this because there were so many 19th Century journalists.

2. Voyage on the Great Titanic: The Diary of Margaret Ann Brady by Ellen Emerson Dates Read: Nov. 11 GoodReads Rating: Three stars Summary: English orphan Margaret Ann keeps a diary of her trip on the Titanic after she is chosen to be a first-class passenger’s companion on board the ship. One-sentence review: Like all good Titanic stories, this book delves right into the class divisions that resulted in so many third-class passenger deaths – Emerson does not talk down to or whitewash history for her readers just because they’re children.

1. The Falling in Love Montage by Ciara Smyth Dates Read: July 28-Aug. 8 GoodReads Rating: Three stars Summary: Jaded Irish teenager Saoirse falls for romantic English girl Ruby, who tries to win Saoirse over with romantic comedy tropes. Review: This book has what all YA comedies have: a spunky narrator, a likeable love interest, fun side characters, and witty banter. That’s really all this one needed, but Smyth went one step beyond by writing a subplot involving Saoirse’s mother’s dementia and her father’s remarriage. Smyth handles the plot realistically, walking a tricky tightrope between handling the dementia sensitively while also writing Saoirse’s teenage angst—which can be pretty self-indulgent in a typical adolescent way. Saoirse worries about her mother, resents her father, and fears that one day she too will get early-onset dementia, which is why she is reluctant to fall in love or go to university. With help from old friends and new, her future stepmother, and of course Ruby, Saoirse comes to learn that planning a future around not having one is no way to live.

I had to pause this book several times (I was listening to the audiobook—and I’ll take this opportunity to give narrator Alana Kerr Collins a shout out because she was great). For personal reasons, I have a hard time reading about dementia and Alzheimer's in fiction, so it was this book was pretty emotional for me. But overall, the message was one of hope, and it was by far the best book I’ve read for children and teens in a while.

I'll post the rest of my books later today, as Part 2 is going to be longer and I want to go to bed.

Thomas Butler, 10th Earl of Ormond

“Elizabeth’s connection with Ormond was in small part genealogical and in a far larger part personal. As the daughter of Anne Boleyn, her paternal great-grandmother was Lady Margaret Butler (d. 1539), daughter of the 7th earl of Ormond, who married Anne’s grandfather, Sir William Boleyn, around 1475. There was therefore a relatively close family connection. But in the intervening years relations between the Boleyns and the Butlers, and within the Butler dynasty itself, had been so turbulent as to dilute whatever ties of allegiance may have exited. But Princess Elizabeth had first met young Lord Butler while both were wards of the Edwardian court and both under heavy suspicion. The friendship begun then survived the reign of Mary when Thomas (well liked by the queen) may have been a source of some succour to the embattled princess. At any rate, upon her accession he was immediately accorded signs of the highest favour. He was given a central place of honour in the coronation ceremony; at court he was given special access to the queen, who conferred on him the affectionate pet name of ‘Tom Duff’ and promoted to the honorary but prestigious position of lord treasurer of Ireland, a position which in the protocols of the Irish council gave him a status above all the other Irish nobility.”

MY THREE SONS at 60!

September 29, 1960

“My Three Sons” was a situation comedy produced at Desilu Studios. It premiered on ABC TV on September 29, 1960 and finished its first run on April 13, 1972, with 380 episodes making it the second-longest running live-action sitcom in TV history after “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriett” (1952-66). 

Seasons 1 through 5 were aired in black and white on CBS.  In 1965 it moved to CBS when ABC declined to underwrite the costs of airing in color.  The series was initially filmed at Desilu Studios in Hollywood, but at the start of the 1967–68 season, the cast and crew began filming the series at the CBS Studio Center in Studio City, California due to Lucille Ball’s sale of Desilu to Gulf + Western, which owned Paramount Pictures. The sale also affected the filming location of another family sitcom, “Family Affair.”

Incredibly, “My Three Sons” ran concurrently through both “The Lucy Show” and “Here’s Lucy.” Both Steve Douglas and Lucy Carmichael (and later Carter), where single parents raising children. 

September 16, 1965 was a big night for CBS airing the very first episode of “My Three Sons” after moving from ABC titled “The First Marriage”. It was also the first episode of the series broadcast in color, something “The Lucy Show” did three days earlier with “Lucy at Marineland” (TLS S4;E1). The premise of the series is a widowed father (Steven Douglas) raising his three boys with help of his extended family.  Initially, the three sons were Chip, Robbie, and Mike, but in 1967 Mike was written out and replaced by Ernie, whom Steve adopted.  The extended family at first consisted of Bub, Steve’s father-in-law and the boys’ maternal grandfather, but in 1964, that character was replaced by Uncle Charley, Steve’s uncle and Bub’s brother. 

The leading role was played by film star Fred MacMurray, who the series was built around - including his hectic schedule. To suit MacMurray, scenes would be shot out of sequence and even alone on a soundstage and later edited to create a complete episode.  This was not MacMurray’s first time at Desilu. In 1958 he played himself on the “Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour” in “Lucy Hunts Uranium” set in the Nevada desert outside Las Vegas. He was joined by his second wife, actress June Haver. MacMurray (1908-91) appeared in over 100 films in his career but is perhaps best remembered for the film Double Indemnity (1944), which Lucy references in this episode. MacMurray’s name was first mentioned by Ethel in 1953 in “The Black Eye” (ILL S2;E20) when flowers arrive for Lucy mistakenly signed “Eternally yours, Fred.”

Although Lucille Ball was their landlord (and ultimate boss) she never acted on the show, but many of the actors who appeared on Lucille Ball’s sitcoms did appear on “My Three Sons”.

From 1960 to 1965, MacMurray was joined by William Frawley as Bub O’Casey, the family’s live-in maternal grandfather. Of course, Frawley came to fame on “I Love Lucy” as the crusty landlord Fred Mertz. Frawley had worked with MacMurray in the 1935 film, Car 99. When Frawley had to leave  the show due to ill-health (and it was too costly to insure him) he was replaced by another Desilu alumni, William Demarest, as Uncle Charley. Like his previous co-star, Vivian Vance, Frawley was not especially fond of Demarest personally or as an actor. Demarest had, however, done three films with Lucille Ball. Frawley kept watching “My Three Sons” on his TV set bitterly. He never really got over being replaced by Demarest. On March 3, 1966, Frawley died of a heart attack.

For Christmas 1959, Frawley and Demarest both appeared with Lucy and Desi in “The Desilu Revue” (above with “December Bride’s” Spring Byington). At the time, Demarest was working on the Desilu lot appearing in NBC’s “Love and Marriage.”

On “My Three Sons” two of  Steve Douglas’ boys had been seen on “The Lucy Show”: Don Grady (Robbie Douglas) had played Chris Carmichael’s friend Bill and Barry Livingston (Ernie Douglas) had played Mr. Mooney’s son Arnold. Ted Eccles, who assumed the role of Arnold Mooney when Barry Livingston was busy on “My Three Sons,” also did an episode. 

The children of “The Lucy Show,” Ralph Hart (who played Viv Bagley’s son Sherman), Jimmy Garrett (Jerry Carmichael), and Candy Moore (Lucy Carmichael’s daughter Chris) were also on episodes of "My Three Sons.”

On November 22, 1977, ABC TV (and Dick Clark Productions) brought together a reunion of two of television's favorite sitcoms "The Partridge Family" and "My Three Sons." Also in 1977, some of the stars of the series reunited on a morning program titled "The Early Show", including Stanley Livingston (Chip Douglas), Barry Livingston (Ernie Douglas), Tina Cole (Katie Miller Douglas), and Don Grady (Robbie Douglas).

The Mommy Myth: Mouthing Off to Dr. Spock (Part One)

American Motherhood in the 1970s was undergoing a real revolution: the country had a 9% unemployment rate, 15% inflation rate, 18%-20% mortgage rates, and President Ford wanted to whip inflation and the most rapidly growing segment of the workforce was mothers with preschool children (Hi Joan Holloway and Kevin, Hi Joyce Byers and Jonathon and Will). In 1970, 40% of married mothers worked and in 1984, 59% of married mothers worked. In 1970, only 24% of mothers with a child one year old or younger worked and in 1984 that jumped to 46.8% Black married mothers were more likely to be in the workforce than white counterparts (won’t be surprised if Mrs. Sinclair had worked outside the home in contrast to Karen) and single-parent households increased by 79% during the 1970s and 90% were headed by women. 

Back then there were few daycare centers, no maternity leave (paid or unpaid), no flex time, no after-school programs, and not the Family Leave Act (mothers still call in sick to watch a sick child) and the VCR and microwave weren’t widely available. 

“This generation of women, who are now approximately 50 years old and older, who raised kids in the 1970s and beyond--these are the ones who are great. It is because of them that companies even established daycare centers, that there are tax deductions for childcare expenses, that there is maternity and even paternity leave (however paltry), that there are now baby seats in supermarket carts. Media centering on motherhood, from women’s magazines to sitcoms, family films were all frozen in 1957. At the same time there was more research being performed on children and infants, to assist in advice columns for moms raising their kids in different circumstances than their parents raised them. But the columnists were often serving mom guilt and had stay in the kitchen attitudes and sitcom moms hardly got angry with their kids and were always soothing and gentle like Mrs. Brady and Mrs. Walton and unlike Flor.

Sitcoms were holding a smaller mom revolution: Maude Findlay (also a grandma), Florida Evans, Ann Romano (the OG One Day at a Time), and Alice Hyatt had feminist inspired barbs at their bratty kids, nosy neighbors, and men while advertisers came out with the supermom. Hollywood mostly focused on alienated young men like Dustin Hoffman and Jack Nicholson while movies targeting women mostly stayed stagnant. 

One movie that focused on the misery of the mid-century housewife as she dealt with being economically dependent on her husband, mindless housework, how she was expected to put her needs and wants on the back burner, and of how men acted like they were so dumb. Diary of a Mad Housewife focused on Tina Balser, a Smith alumni who is married to a man named Richard, who manages to fuse together the worst traits of Ted Wheeler, Lonnie Byers, Pete Campbell, and Don Draper together. He’s an up-and-coming lawyer who preens and condescends and insists his wife cracks ice instead of serving it cubed and dictated Thanksgiving dinner (he doesn’t cook it though) and only wanted Danson Plum preserves on his toast and starts the film complaining about Tina being too skinny and her ability to do things the way he wants and dissed her ability to make a 4 minute egg to their bratty daughters (all the combined bratty traits of Nancy and Mike Wheeler and none of the intelligence, empathy, and passion that drives these characters). 

The lesser known Barbra Striesand vehicle Up the Sandbox opens up with one mother telling another: “I’ve read all the child psych books. To be a good mother you gotta learn to eat shit” (few shit has changed it seems). Based on an novel by Anne Roiphe, the story focuses on Margaret a mother of two who loves her kids but wants to do more than stay home and is....pregnant again. She has wild fantasies that makes Doug Funnie look less...funny like debating with Fidel Castro about the status of women and having a love affair with him and blowing up the Statue of Liberty with Black militants or presumably confronting her husband’s secretary/co-worker if she’s having an affair with him. After they went to a party where busty young women fell over him because he was so interesting and he made a dismissive comment about a female Ph.D candidate who wanted to have one kid and go back to work, is where Margaret tells him off:

A woman like me works twice as hard, and for what? Stretch marks and varicose veins. You’ve got one job, I’ve got ninety-seven. Maybe I should be on the cover of Time---dust mop of the year, queen of the laundry room....(where she can’t live up to his colleagues or her mother) I’m a zero, a nothing” and when he said she can do more and be happy, she tells him off more “Did more? I sew. I squeegee. I spend hours waiting in line for a sale on baby sandals just to save a few pennies...I’m an errand boy, a cook, a dishwasher, a cockroach catcher, and you say I’d be happy if I did more.” Karen, spin that shit!

Women’s magazines had a new challenge: so you gave advice for decades about how moms can beat diaper rash, crochet covers for your toilet seats, and make a birthday cake in the shape of a character your kid liked but now there are sentiments challenging the conventions of marriage and parenthood, what do you do?

In 1973, Redbook magazine had a poll saying 9/10 respondents knew women earned less than men for the same work, 3/4 thought the media degraded women, a large majority believed women were second-class citizens, and 2/3 supported the Women’s Movement. Also more of them were working or joining the workforce, even with small children and more were divorcing and looking for childcare and to pay the bills and wanted a break. The shithead experts said no the latter. 

Mom’s can’t be overprotective but protective enough.

You can’t be over-attentive in your kid’s lives but make them feel loved and always wonderful.

You need them to be independent, but always taken care of.

Can’t be too strict or permissive.

You need to be light-hearted.

Those were the rules many mothers of Gen Xers and Baby Boomers were under (and still the same now). Dr. Spock was singled out, he was the most influential of these experts with his famous book coming out in 1946 (the first year of the Baby Boom) and his advice dominated the magazines in the 1950s and 1960s. He dished out mom guilt for working outside the home or not weaning babies before they were one year olds and that leaving kids with a “mother substitute” would make them needy (so not even date night?). Also you had to be bonding with your kids properly (all while moms were dealing with doctors up against the natural childbirth movement) and even an hour may not be enough. Also normal women were sad when kids weaned themselves off the breast! Any misstep in your kids will fuck them up!

(REVIEW) Lost Horizon by Nathaniel Farrell

In this review, Jack Parlett ventures through the avenues, grooves and colliding landscapes, fantasies and libidinal economies of Nathaniel Farrell’s Lost Horizon (Ugly Duckling Presse, 2019).

> Nathaniel Farrell’s long poem Lost Horizon (2019), which takes as its subject the space of the retail utopia, makes me think of a lot of things. Which is to say that its sense of breadth and abundance – packed full of things and images, traversing vast distances across different landscapes – had me grasping for other reference points, for affinities that might suggest ways of reading it. The pile-up of the opening lines, scattered across the page, offers a glimpse into the ways this poem can get you lost:

The fountain full of coins       the smell of pretzels, print, perfume

formaldehyde in fabrics

                                   brass rails down stairwells      rebar in the pillars

           the underground parking structure – Roman alphabet

                                                                                   Arabic numerals –

                                                                                       (Farrell 2019: 1)

> The mall, scented with the churn of Auntie Anne’s pretzels (say) and the potent fragrances of a nearby department store, is rendered throughout the poem as an archaeological surface, as though the poet’s task were one of excavation. Lost Horizon reminds me, in this sense, of an Anselm Kiefer painting; a maximalist collage blending the industrial and the pastoral, foregrounding the dimensionality of objects that appear ‘found’ within the landscape of the work, like the unsettling use of spindly wires and sticks the painter is known for. Farrell, too, is interested in exteriorising the subterranean, the things that glimmer and protrude, like the ‘coins’ emanating from beneath the water of the fountain, like the chemical compounds found in our clothes. His is a multi-storeyed work, finding ancient linguistic systems in car parks, conferring the quotidian spaces of late capitalism with the dignity of the palimpsest.

> But Farrell’s poem does not settle upon one groove. It unfolds in strange and wrong-footing ways. Although this opening passage would seem to suggest a logic of succession, a list of things you might expect to find in a shopping mall, with an associative momentum driven forward by alliteration, the poem’s larger scheme is one of randomness, a yoking together of any number of images and textures. (My personal favourite: ‘Avocado.       TV as diorama or diocese                   catfish farm     trout hatchery.’) (27). This fragmented structure speaks back to the form of the Surrealist catalogue, or to experiments in automatic writing, and renders them in a distinctly American vernacular, like the New York melee of Frank O’Hara’s long 1953  poem Second Avenue or, more recently, Geoffrey G. O’Brien’s 2011 work Metropole (minus the strict iambic rules.)

> Yet where Second Avenue seems to stage a representational gag – in what sense is this poem, characterised by lines like ‘Butter. Lotions. Cries. A glass of ice’ (O’Hara 1995: 149) ‘about’ Second Avenue itself? – the abstraction of Farrell’s purview is already made explicit in his title. Lost Horizon is a work in search of a potentiality that has already been lost, and it goes looking for it in all kinds of places: shopping malls, forests, multiplexes, highways, locales suspended in the poem’s veering between the vitality of the artificial and the natural realm to which it shall one day return. Where a ‘rebarbative’ work like Second Avenue, in Andrea Brady’s words, recoils ‘from sentimentality but also from the reader’ (Brady 2010: 60), Farrell’s poem does the opposite. It homes in upon the way that sentiment might inhere in the spaces and materials of consumption and the faded spectacles of capital. Perhaps this is why, beyond any of the more high-minded comparisons it invites, Lost Horizon makes me think most of all of the town I grew up in.

> It feels a little parochial to compare the scale of Farrell’s Americana with a single town in Buckinghamshire. (He writes in the Acknowledgments that the project ‘emerged from road travel’ and draws upon the imagery of places including ‘St. Louis  and Los Angeles, San Francisco, Detroit, Minneapolis, Cleveland, Kansas City, Pittsburgh, and Fort Wayne’.) Yet shopping malls trade, the poem suggests, in incongruity; they flatten space and time, incorporate the urban, the pastoral and the global, as if the whole world might be incorporated under their ceilings. I realised in navigating this poem that so much of my sense of America, and Americanness as a kind of distant and glamorous imaginary, was mediated through my childhood in Milton Keynes. Milton Keynes was, after all, developed with reference to the layout of American cities.

> The area known as Central Milton Keynes (or ‘CMK’) was conceived in the mid-seventies as part of the recently created ‘new town’ in Buckinghamshire, and was officially opened by Margaret Thatcher in 1979. Although ‘CMK’ is a municipal designation – a name for the central zone of the larger Milton Keynes area – it is predominantly a business and retail district. Laid out on a grid, CMK sits somewhere between the ‘downtown’ area of an American city and the out-of-town shopping mall; an assemblage of shopping centres, office buildings and industrial parks, characterised by its distinctive glass-and-steel buildings and an infamous number of roundabouts. Like many British ‘new towns’, Milton Keynes was created with both pragmatic and idealistic aims in mind. On the one hand, it was an overspill project providing an outlet for London’s rising and congested population. On the other, it was to be a new frontier both socially and architecturally; an automobile haven merging green space with the imposing surfaces of the modern city. Today, it looks both futuristic and dated. Or rather, it looks like what the future was once supposed to look like.

> When I tell people I grew up in and around Milton Keynes, it usually prompts one of two responses. The first, most frequent and predictable, is a kind of apologetic nod, a nod to MK’s associations in the national imaginary as a uniquely naff, soulless place. The other (more generous) reaction is a kind of keen and outsize enthusiasm, prompting a conversation about the town’s architectural significance or its peculiar place in British local history as an experiment of urban planning. (There’s also, sometimes, outright judgment, as when on my first day of university a private schoolboy told me that ‘when I think of Milton Keynes I think of scum.’). My feelings about the place fall somewhere in the middle – I’m defensive of it in the face of snobbery, but I also think that the people who find it an area of intellectual interest probably didn’t grow up there. Until the opening of the recently re-developed Milton Keynes Gallery, which was reported widely in the national press, CMK lacked a culture of its own, and it still remains best known as a cornucopia of brand names and chain restaurants.

> And yet I can’t pretend that some part of me doesn’t kind of love it. Farrell’s work pays attention to the embarrassment one might feel about being from a place like Milton Keynes, or rather the embarrassment in our attachments to such a place. I still desire to rediscover the uniquely artificial pleasures of the shopping mall. Against my better judgments, I find myself beguiled again by CMK’s performance of grandeur, its strange radiance. Or perhaps its that my memories of childhood and adolescence are shot through, like an off-brand Lorde song, with its suburban framework, its constellation of uniquely named places like The Point, a red steel pyramid housing the UK’s first multiplex cinema when it opened in 1985, or the pastoral-sounding Midsummer Place, an extension of the shopping centre built around an oak tree, which people still refer to today as the ‘new bit.’ (It was opened at the start of the millennium and has been bought out by the Intu franchise. The tree is no more.)

> The speaker of Lost Horizon similarly figures the retail landscape as a site of affective and libidinal attachments, less a utopic horizon than a space where experience is packaged and backlit, where material capitalism might dupe us into utopic thinking, where you can hear ‘the beat of an unmoored heart in the duty-free shop’ (Farrell: 70). (The term retail therapy is particularly apt.) This speaker has a mobile erotic attention; reflects on the bulge of a male model, spots ‘a sign for Hooter’s at the Colonial Williamsburg exit / the owl’s eyes made to look like nipples’ (24) and appears to cruise, ‘wait[ing] at the bathrooms; / they smell of feces and orange cleanser / Yankee Candle’ (23). Nature, after all, will make its return, and the most pristine spaces must co-mingle with muck, human and otherwise. An ominous refrain towards the beginning of the poem - ‘A cellphone glows in a back pocket’ (9) - signals the mall’s impending obsolescence, its succumbing to the space of the virtual, and this in turn informs the poem’s ecological fixation, its avalanche of natural elements and catastrophic tableaux. Because this is what happens to shopping malls, eventually, as shown in the work of photojournalist Seph Lawless. Lawless’s portraits of abandoned shopping malls in economically precarious parts of America, malls now overgrown with vegetation, look post-apocalyptic, like a contemporary sci-fi iteration of the way Walter Benjamin conceptualised the Parisian arcades of the nineteenth century; as repositories, in part, for the lost dreams of prosperity.

> The shopping area of Central Milton Keynes is now Grade II-listed by Historic England, and it is renowned for its extensive greenery, its line of trees that populate the grid. (The area as a whole boasts 22 million trees and shrubs.) The integration of the green and sub(urban) landscape is something that makes the centre of Milton Keynes more desirable and sustainable, a nod to the land’s past. But you could look at it another way; not as a symbol of origin, but of man-made transience. Whatever shiny promises the retail utopia makes, it is built, Farrell’s dizzying poem suggests, to one day succumb to an unknowable horizon, where the trees will be ‘all that remain of home’ (3).
