Something I just adore about Margret is how she can't help from loving deeply even when she really dosen't want to. You can see that she desperately wants to be above it all, but she just Cares and Loves so much that it just bursts out of her. Even in the early seasons its there, she just gets better at showing it, and better at letting people love her back.

Ron what are your top favorite tv shows
hi kait. thank you sooo much for this ask. television is my first and true love and i have a great many things to say about it.
Black Sails - Black Sails is like a show made in a lab to please me. It is a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island" which integrates the fake pirates from the book with the real pirates of history. It is about my number one interest of all time, historiography, the way that we tell the story of history. It is about the way that society uses stories and shame to control people. Its epic.
Trust FX - A miniseries. This is also about historiography, you will sense a theme. This is about the Getty kidnapping. It is full of beautiful sexy Italians and horrible horrible Americans. Brendan Fraser slays as a PI slash Greek Chorus. Luca Marinelli gives the performance to end all performances as Primo Nizzuto.
Justified - A tribute to the now rightfully dead Western Genre Justified is about a bunch of guys who suck that you cannot help but root for. A big city Marshall is forced to return to his hometown of Harlan, Kentucky after shooting a man. Some of the greatest characters of all time come from this show. Raylan Givens, Dickie Bennet, Dewey Crowe, Tim Gutterson, Rachel Brooks, and above all, Boyd Crowder. If you are compelled by slow talking, fast drawing men with problems, you will love this brilliantly witty crime drama.
MASH - Hawkeye Pierce is like a real friend to me. This too is about historiography. 11 seasons of swirling 70s sleaze and the hardest hitting antiwar commentary wrapped up in the warm and fuzzy packaging of a pleasantly green sitcom. In the first season Frank asks Hawkeye if he's ever serious, Hawkeye responds "I tried it once, everybody laughed," and it felt like my life flashing before my eyes. Trapper John McIntyre, BJ Hunnicutt, Margret Houlihan, these are just a few of the greatest characters ever written. And they're on mash.
This is where things get hard, this answer has changed a lot over the years, a few years ago, It's Always Sunny would have been like 2 on this list, as far as number of funny episodes, its still pretty high up there, I also have to mention The Monkees of course, Turn: Washington's Spies was a formative classic for me and me alone, Star Trek: The Next Generation is brilliant. There are the modern classics, Succession, Severance, and Santa Clarita Diet. The old greats, Cheers, Taxi, Star Wars the Clone Wars. My past obsessions, Jonathan Creek, TAITV, I Made America, Torchwood. Flight of The Concords and What We Do In The Shadows informed my humor so much. But I think in the end the 5th greatest television program is the San Diego Padres. Not a show in the traditional sense, but TV certainly, and a program I have probably spent more time watching than any other.

The only thing I find myself disliking about Margret Houlihan is how, especially after she gets engaged, she name drops Donald constantly. It’s annoying. Like, we get it, you’re engaged to Donald Penobscot. I can understand being excited about being engaged, I can understand rubbing it in Frank’s face/reminding him, but eventually it becomes enough.
"My fiancé, Lieutenant-Colonel Donald Penobscot," is supposed to be annoying! You can see it in how all the other characters react. I don't mind it but it can get a little old to watch. That storyline is fairly early in her character development from antagonist to protagonist too. Don't worry, it doesn't last the rest of the show!

I think the funniest thing about Hawk being Like That is that Alan Alda has writers credits on the show. This man voluntarily made his character the most touch starved needy desperate person on the planet and that's so fucking insane of him. But also Mr Alda I would like to give you a little hug and a kiss for giving him to us because I love him with my whole heart. And don't even get me started on the fact that Hawkeye yelled to a general "I want to have your baby!" In literally the first season. Like Hawkeye my love not everyone needs to know you want to be pregnant 😂 And truly he deserves to be absolutely smothered with cuddles, everyone loves him and he loves everyone and I think it could help fix him.
Listen my Trap brain is always on, he's my man, I am thinking about him quite literally daily. And now that you reminded me of the priest line I'm gonna think of that too! Like Trapper my love what happened in your past? Did your parents give you that many names in hopes you'd be a priest? Did you pick one yourself for confirmation? Why did you keep all of the names despite seemingly abandoning the religion? I am peering at him like a bug under a microscope and there's nothing he can do about it.
That little coffee through line with Margret is so cute! Even though I'm sure it was unintentional on the show's part I definitely couldn't help but think of it and flash back to The Nurses in both the scenes in Temporary Duty and CAVE. Margaret and cups of coffee representing her character growth is honestly so sweet and I love it. Also ooohhhh self proclaimed Military Brat Margaret Houlihan realizing that the Army Way isn't the only way or even the best way, and the things that would DO to her. The realization that what she's learned her whole life isn't necessarily good, and having to contend with what that means for her and her career and her personality. And also having to face her father after that, because we see in Are You Now, Margaret? that she cares very much about disappointing him and even affecting his career. Would such a realization maybe help her become more of her own person that isn't living only to make her father proud and keep up the Houlihan name? Or is her desire to be a point of pride for her family more important to her than her personal development? Truly she's so fascinating to me. And it's definitely an interesting parallel with Mulcahy, both of them having something so deeply ingrained in them that it h u r t s when it's finally inevitably broken out.
Everyone in this show suffered enough in the narrative for several lifetimes but damn if I don't wanna give them a little bit more hardship to really crack them open and wrap up their character development in the way they deserve. I'll definitely give them softness and love but first they need a little bit of pain I think 😂
(Also I am officially onto season 8! I finished Goodbye Radar last night and was a Wreck. Man I love this show)
Okay hi again anon, sorry for making this sit while thinking too hard about Hawk and Beje and Trap things.
I swear that Alan did more to break and attempt to breed Hawk than any of us fanfic authors have ever done. I am not entirely convinced that this man didn't start getting the bends once he couldn't whump Hawk anymore and instead pivoted to writing fanfics for the old distant zines that popped up in the '80s. He probably has multiple AO3 accounts right now just churning out agonizing pain. Alan we know what you are.
I do hate that we got so little development for Trap compared to Beej but it's also delightful because it means all of us get to sit here and rotate him on a merry-go-round that goes faster and faster and never stops. Anything is possible. He's so INTERESTING!!! He's like half a guy! No matter what anyone says, they could probably make it work! And that means I am in fact slam dunking the religious trauma into him at breakneck speeds. Sorry, bud (lie).
I'm so glad you mentioned Are You Now Margaret because that's one of those underrated episodes that always has its teeth so deep in me. We learn so much about her so fast. Her big friend group!! She had so many people who loved her and who she loves enough that she refuses to endanger them even though she hasn't spoken to make in years!! The fact that she will give her father that kind of deference even though we all know in our bones that he doesn't deserve it! God, Margaret.
I love people like you who run in with a wrecking ball just absolute decimating all these characters that we know and love so that I can come in after in my little clown car with hot chocolate and blankets. I am a simple author. I know what my duty is here. And it's getting everybody laid by everybody else but ALSO giving them extreme amounts of aftercare and pillow nests ;v; We all share such a vital role in this ecosystem.

Queer M*A*S*H
So, inspired by @writtenbyalanalda I've been thinking about the queer identies presented on M*A*S*H and so here's my own random musings as to where characters feature in the LGBTQIA+ community:
Hawkeye: Aromantic allosexual. I know some people read him as a closeted gay man (and I see where they're coming from), but given his fear of commitment and the way he recoils from approaches by women I feel it's more that he's interested exclusively in sex and doesn't want/ know how to respond to any kind of deeper connection. Add into that the obvious importance he places on his relationship with Trapper and then BJ.
BJ Hunnicut: Definitely bicurious of not fully bisexual. Again I can appreciate the arguments that he's gay, but he seems WAY too devoted to Peg and Erin for it to be just him playing it straight in a lavender marriage (especially with the way he struggles with the temptation to cheat). Obviously he reciprocate some of Hawkeye's feelings without being able to fully express them but I can't see him leaving his wife and child to persue a same sex relationship.
Charles E Winchester III: Heteroromantic Asexual. He never really shows any kind of interest in anyone else, and from what we see of his limited romantic/sexual relationships he's far more concerned with bloodlines and continuing the family name/tradition than anything else, to the point he rejects potential partners because his parents/ family wouldn't approve of them. I personally get the feeling he's looking to get married due to the pressure of family/society for the 'heir and spare'.
Margret 'Hot Lips' Houlihan: Definitely bisexual. Although she's depicted as a maneater, a lot of her more personal storylines and character development (and what Loretta Swift highlighted in interviews) relate to her personal relationships. Particularly her unwillingness to be vulnerable and or open up (particularly to other the women in camp). Now this is in stark contrast to the closeness it's revealed she had with her friends as a student nurse/teenager and is in keeping with her background as an army brat and trying to live up to her father's expectations. Also, whilst it's never explicitly started, it's implied that she's an only child and her father (as a career officer) would have prefered/expected a son.
Fathr J P Mulchacey: Clearly Aroace. Without wishing to cast aspersions onto members of the Catholic church, he's clearly not interested in the idea of sex and is noticably uncomfortable with physical contact to the point where he's noticeably uncomfortable about being hugged by a woman and doesn't know how to respond. Even leaving aside his religious views whilst he's comfortable taking about other people's sex/romantic lives the idea of doing it himself seems anathema to him.
Cpl Walter 'Radar' O'Reily: Aspec/Demisexual. His sexuality and inexperience is often treated as a joke (to the point where he gets openly asked of he's a virgin) which is understandable given he's a young man from a small town in the mid West. But he shows a willingness to try and flirt with the nurses and obviously feels some form of attraction to various women he meets. However, he seems reluctant to try and persue them (even when they approach him) and feels a social pressure to try and consumate his relationships.

Feeling soooo sad about Margret “hotlips” Houlihan
Like ok, you are thirty, and never had a friend on account of moving your whole life. Your father is very military and not very affectionate and you’ve had little to none connection with any other women as your mother and father are divorced and she’s a kleptomaniac alcoholic. You feel like approval is something you desperately need.
Also by the time you are thirty, you already have the moniker “hotlips”, primarily because you sleep with most of your fathers geriatric friends, none of who take you seriously. This is the army and there is no room for love, there is only respect, none of which they have for you.
You get a rank, a good rank, but the men underneath you jibe and treat it like a game. The people you are responsible for taking care of don’t consider you a friend, just an annoyance, you care more about this game that promises respect over and over and over again if you can just be good enough at it more than anyone else who treats your rule following with annoyance and scorn.
When you think you fall in love you aren’t woman enough, aren’t soft enough, but who’s been soft with you? Since when has this been about being a woman, about being easy for someone else to control? You’re a major damn it, respect is needed, but because of your sex you are denied it time and time again, not just in rank but as a person.
Do you ever think about the fact she was ready to commit suicide in cease fire? That until later the war was the only think keeping her going, that Frank fucking burns who had a wife at home and didn’t share his money and was a ninny and a coward was the only thing worth living for, and that the thought of loosing that was enough for her to stick her head in a stove?
Idk man, she just makes me sad. Hotlips shouldn’t be a term of endearment about how much she pleases men, it should be something sad about why she felt she needed to do that, how alone and without a single friend she was when she was doing that, but she’s still even now to be thought to just be a hotheaded floozy instead of someone built to play a specific game that never had a win condition or actually followed it’s own rules.

idk if m*a*s*h was on your list Margaret Houlihan for the character thing :)
Ah I’m happy to oblige, I love mash!
favourite thing about them
She always picks herself back up when she’s knocked down
least favorite thing about them
Her taste in men. I feel like most of the show is me going “honey, no” at her
favourite line
It’s been a while since I’ve watched mash, but I love her speech in the nurses episode in season 5, it’s one of the main Margaret moments that sticks in my mind
brOTP
Margaret and Potter!
OTP
Lowkey Margret and Hawkeye, don’t judge 🥲
nOTP
Margaret and F*ank
random headcanon
I feel like this is a pretty accepted headcanon and it’s kinda canon, but Margaret is bisexual and I will die on that hill. I also firmly believe that she ends up with a woman after the war, she’s had enough of men
unpopular opinion
I love Margaret’s development but I think it’s a little overhyped. Like I don’t think she really changed as a person, she was just mean in the first few seasons because Frank brought out the worst in her, and then when they split she was more her true, nicer self
song i associate with them
hmmm, the first one that springs to mind is the man by Taylor swift
favorite picture of them
Any picture where she’s smiling because she looks goddamn radiant
