Dominoes game with box, made of bone, probably by a Prisoner-of-War, c. 1793
The box is decorated with revolutionary motifs: portraits of characters from the French Revolution, a naval battle scene and Marianne with a shield, a spear with the Phrygian cap on the lid.

So I've been thinking about a Batman X persona AU
The basic plot is Terry McGinnis and a bunch of  OCS who are basically descendants of Batman villains team up to beat the s*** out of Hugo Strange for trying to summon Barbados who is a twisted God of Justice, he is summoning Barbados by creating more Insanity in the world,   in his mind the existence of evil  creates the call for the great fist  of Justice, therefore the more  crazy evil in the world will make the call for the fist of Barbados  louder, so you know he'll get here faster
So the cutesy mascot and beginner Navigator of the game is a  depowered Michael who's the god of crazy, but like the freedom crazy can bring, he has his character Arc about doubting if his purpose is really helping the world and he ends up becoming a bushoni catboy at the end
The initial party members are Lewis and Lenore who are the emperor and Empress respectively, I can't think of there initial personas but I have an idea of everyone's ultimate personas being trickster related (for example the doctor freeze analog would have the goddess hel as an ultimate, cuz you know she's cold related and also the kid of a trickster God)
The only initial Persona I have a vague idea about is the lenoirs, I'm thinking Marianne (you know the chick book Alice gets mistaken for) and for sure the goddess   Eris as an ultimate,  I guess another child of Nix for Lewis so they can be siblings by Blood and persona
Dorothy will be the Navigator after Michael quits  so he can focus more on his character Arc, she's the hermit Arcana and she has an Eldredge persona, I'm thinking straight up  Nyarlathotep as an ultimate
Obviously the OG Batman villains are the bosses who need to have that crazy  meters crank down from the maximum Hugo bought them to, though only Lenore Lewis and Dorothy confront their projectors
More about the Hugo plan basically he's driving influential people crazy,  so that can Domino into a big outburst of mental breakdowns,   He  starts his planned by mind screwing with some professors  at   Gotham University,  obviously there Jarvis and Jonathan, if you couldn't tell from Lewis and Lenore being the initial party members
There is a joker  analog and he's working for Hugo, he's not  an OC
He's James Gordon Jr,
and he's the devil Arcana,
his personas Loki,
and he hates  that, he hates that so much he wants to stop existing
So if you guys have any ideas about other party members and personas just hit me up I guess

A lucky collector will be able to purchase one of Louis’ white label vinyls through auction to benefit the Brit Trust. [Article]
The White Label Auction in Aid of The BRIT Trust – the world’s only known auction of “white label” test pressings – takes place next week on Tuesday, 6th June 2023. This year it will have more than 200 lots of highly collectible ‘white-label’ test pressings – the most offered in the four editions of the auction to date since it began in 2019.
The online/on-site auction is once again being hosted by music memorabilia and vinyl records specialists Omega Auctions from their Newton-Le-Willows (Greater Manchester) base. The full catalogue can be accessed here.
Fans and collectors can bid from a huge selection of white label test pressings that rarely come to market, with some even signed by the artists such as The Cure, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, New Order, and Wilko Johnson.
The UK’s record labels led by Universal Music UK, who founded the event with the BPI, along with BMG, Domino Recordings, Cherry Red, Sony Music Entertainment UK, Warner Records and others, each year join forces to curate a broad selection of white label auction lots to raise funds for the vital work of music industry charity The BRIT Trust – which promotes education and wellbeing through music and the creative arts to support causes that include the BRIT School and Nordoff and Robbins.
In January the BPI reported that vinyl albums had recorded a 15th year of consecutive growth in the UK, with over 5.5m LPs purchased in 2022. This rising demand for vinyl has in turn resulted in a growing archive of white label test pressings – so called because there is no sleeve artwork at this early stage – which record labels produce ahead of the full release of an album to ensure its audio quality. With only a handful produced, these first-off-the-press copies are snapped up by collectors on the rare occasions they become available, as evidenced by the huge interest in the three White Labels Auctions to date, which between them have raised around £100,000.
White label test pressings by the following artists:
Arcade Fire / Beth Gibbons, Portishead / Black Grape / Blind Faith / Blossoms / Brian Eno / Bryan Ferry / Budgie / Buzzcocks / Calvin Harris & Dua Lipa / Calvin Harris, Katy Perry & Pharrell Williams / Calvin Harris & Sam Smith / Camel / Caravan / Celeste / The Charlatans / Chemical Brothers / Christy Moore / Corinne Bailey-Rae / Cream / The Cure / Daryl Hall & John Oates / Deep Purple / Derek and The Dominoes / Dexy’s Midnight Runners / Diana Ross / Dio / Dirty Pretty Things / Donovan / Doves / Duffy / Dusty Springfield / Ed Sheeran / Emeli Sandé / Eric Carmen / Eric Clapton / The Ethiopians / Eurythmics / The Fall / Fairport Convention / Frankie Goes To Hollywood / ightened Rabbit / Gary Moore / Gaz Coombes / Genesis / George Ezra / Graham Parker / Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five / Gregory Isaacs / Helloween / Inspiral Carpets / Iggy Pop / J Hus / Jacob Collier / Jake Bugg / The Jam / Jamie T / Joe Cocker / John Martyn / John Martyn & Beverley Martyn / John Mayall / Joni Mitchell / Julian Cope / Justin Hayward and John Lodge / Karl Hyde / Kate Nash / Katie J Pearson / Kelis / Kid Creole / Kings of Convenience / Koffee / The LA’s / Laura Marling / Level 42 / Led Zeppelin / Lindisfarne / Linton Kwesi-Johnson / Louis Tomlinson / Ludovico Einaudi / The Lumineers / McAlmont & Butler / Madness / Manic Street Preachers / Marianne Faithfull / Mark Ronson & Miley Cyrus / Mark Knopfler / Meat Loaf / Melt Yourself Down / The Members / The Mighty Diamonds / Mike and The Mechanics / Mike Oldfield / MJ Cole Moby / Monty Python / The Moody Blues / Motorhead / Mott The Hoople / Nathaniel Rateliff / Nazareth / Neneh Cherry / New Order / Nicholas Briteli / Noah and The Whale / Nothing But Thieves / Nova Twins / Orchestra Manouevres in the Dark / Pale Fountains / Paloma Faith / Paul Weller/ Penguin Café Orchestra / Pete Townshend / Pete Townshend and Ronnie Lane/ PiL / Pulp / Quincy Jones / Rag ‘n’ Bone Man / Rainbow / Rhys Lewis / Richard & Linda Thompson / Rick Wakeman / Rizzle Kicks / Robbie Williams / Robyn / Roger Waters / Ronnie James / Rory Gallagher / The Ruts / Sam Cooke / Sandie Shaw / Sandie Shaw & The Smiths / Sandy Denny / Scissor Sisters / The Scorpions / Scott Walker / Selecta’s Choice Series / Sex Pistols / Shed Seven / The Silvertones / Simple Minds / The Skatalites / Sparks / The Slits / Soul II Soul / The Specials / The Spice Girls / Squeeze / Status Quo / Stereophonics / Steve Winwood / The Stone Roses / Supertramp / T-Rex / Tame Impala / Tangerine Dream / Teardrop Explodes / Tears For Fears / The Teskey Brothers / Therapy? / Thin Lizzy / Tom Speight / Travis / UB40 / The Undertones / Underworld / UNKLE / The Vaccines / The Vamps / Van Morrison / Various: Blue Note / Various Folk / Various Dance - John Morales and others / Various – Little Big Lies / Various – NOW Yearbooks 1980 - 1985 / Various – The Wanderer / Various – Soul / Various – Sound of the Suburbs / The Verve / The Wedding Present / The Who / Wilko Johnson / You Me At Six

The Forgotten One

Chapter 5
Ladybug and Chat Noir made their debut on a sunny Monday of September. Just as her master had feared that intense energy they felt was only the beginning. Hawkmoth started his reign of terror, releasing his akumas on unsuspecting civilians, using their strong negative emotions, and creating his champions. It was a vile move, attacking someone when they were vulnerable. But Marianne had to admit that he was good. She was trained to do exactly the same thing, to manipulate and exploit someone’s weakness, but at least she had the decency to never use her abilities for personal gain unless extremely necessary. She was a soldier, everything she did was by the order of someone. Her whole training so far had been preparing her for this moment.
So when Stonehart appeared, she was ready.
She knew everything she needed to do, she had been trained since birth for this. Her Master was confident that she had what it took to take down these akumatized people, and allied with the one he had chosen to wield the Cat Miraculous they would be unstoppable. He didn’t tell her the identity of the person he has chosen, but she knew he wouldn’t. For safety reasons, only the Grand Guardian would know the identities of the wielders. But she didn’t need to know his identity in order to work with him.
Chat Noir surprised her a lot. She knew he couldn’t possibly have the same training she had, but he still knew how to fight. He’s trained in fencing from what she can tell by his style of fighting, and he’s very good. After some time they became the perfect duo, always in synchrony and ready for anything. It’s nice to have someone on her side, in the League she mostly acted alone, so having someone that had her back full time was new.
It took two years to defeat Hawkmoth. In those two years that she lived in Paris, a lot changed. First was her name. In order to live completely off the radar of the League, she needed a new name. They had lost contact with the League after the attack, so they never discovered what exactly happened, or who won in the end. She was glad the Mayor of Paris decided that it would be better to ban any rumors of a supervillain in the city from the outside world, fearing that that would cause the tourism to diminish. That allowed her some security, but one could never be too careful, the League was known to have spies everywhere. So she changed her name. In the documents that her godmother forged, she was called Marinette Dupain but preferred to be called Mari because that was closer to her real name. Daughter of a kind baker and his traveler wife, her backstory was that she spent most of her childhood traveling the world with her mother, but now her parents decided that it would be good for her to stay in the same place for more time. She would be homeschooled by Sabine, which was enough for social security to allow her to be kept from attending school. It was kind of funny that she lived so close to a school but didn’t study there.
Another thing that changed was that for the first time she had people she could rely on. Before it was only Damian. He was the only one that she ever told about her fears and insecurities, confiding in him was something she missed in those years apart. They were very close before the attack, and after two long years of thinking she was dead, she wasn’t sure what would happen when they finally reunited. But she hoped it would go well.
When she first transformed, she felt invincible. It was something she would never forget, feeling that kind of power was memorable. It was normal for the suit to incorporate traits of your personality, but it still was a surprise when she saw herself as Ladybug for the first time. She wore a black skin-tight suit that covered her entire body from the neck down, in her torso making the illusion a corset, a part of the suit was red with black spots. She also had boots and a jacket to complement her look, also in red with dots. Her hair tied back in a ponytail was rather practical and allowed her better motion. On her right leg strapped to her tight was a knife holster with a small dagger that served for surprise attacks, her specialty. Around her waist was where she tied her yoyo when she wasn’t using it. To conceal her identity, she wore a domino mask also in red.
In the beginning, she wanted to use another name for her superheroine self, one that paid tribute to her Arabic roots, but Master Fu thought it better to go with a more generic name, that way it would be harder to obtain any type of information about her. In the end, she relented and went with Ladybug.
When Ladybug and Chat Noir first appeared, most of Paris newspapers and tabloids started to question the origin of their superheroes. Some believe them to be aliens, which her Master thought hilarious. Others were certain they were metahumans, born with their powers, and their Miraculous just served as an amplifier, and Hawkmoth wanted all Miraculous to increase his power to the maximum level, in Mari’s case they were partially right about the part of the powers. The one that came closer to the truth was the writer of the Ladyblog, the amount of research she had was impressive for someone so young. She discovered that the Miraculous were older than they thought, dating back all the way to the ancient Egyptian Empire, other than that she was way off. She had this theory that the Miraculous holders were a group of immortal entities that always appeared in ties of need, but recently one of them must have gone bad, tired of centuries in hiding, and the others are trying to defeat them and restore peace. It was a good theory that had some truth behind it, but still very exaggerated. It didn’t help that Ladybug was obviously experienced and that only served to fund this theory even more.
It became a game for Ladybug and Chat Noir to find the funniest theories and share them during patrol. Chat was really good in that, normally he just asked one of his friends what they thought. Mari, not having friends to ask just bought stuff the media printed. These kinds of games helped them relax a little after a tiring battle.
After two years of fighting evil forces, it was impossible for the two superheroes not to be close. Their kind of relationship always reminded Mari of her brother, and she often felt guilty for not being able to reach him. But that only motivated her more in defeating Hawkmoth. Only then she would be able to leave Paris.
Living in Paris was nice, for the first time in her life she created a routine for herself. She had training with Master Fu in the mornings and she helped at the bakery during the afternoons. Every other day there would be an Akuma attack and she would step into her role as Ladybug. Other than that her life became pretty calm compared to what it was at the League. She even got the time to explore her creative side, drawing and sewing became her favorite hobbies.
But nothing ever stays the same for long, not for her.
It was about one year and a half after the attack on the League, just as her Master was getting close to discovering the exact location of origin of the source of evil energy. They knew the owner of the Butterfly Miraculous knew how to read energies, being that what alerted him of the Ladybug Miraculous being activated after Mari was brought back from the dead, but they weren’t expecting him to be able to track them. Her Master energy was easier to locate, even with him being the Grand Guardian, because of his old age.
To this day she wasn’t sure what exactly happened, only that one afternoon she felt as if the energy around shifted and became unbearable. Fearing the worst she went to her Master in search of guidance, but when she was nearing his house she saw him. Hawkmoth in the flesh. Around him were five Akumas previously defeated.
He was at a rooftop engaging Master Fu, who at the time had already transformed with the Turtle Miraculous, in a heated duel. At the side was Mayura, trying to reach the Miraculous Box that was secured inside a green dome. Not wasting one minute she transformed in a nearby alley and went into action attacking the Peacock wielder. She was ruthless in her blows, never leaving space for the other woman to attack. Chat Noir arrived a couple of minutes later and went for the akumatized people, but at that point it was already too late. Master Fu knew that would be his last day on earth, he didn't have the strength to fight and maintain the Box inside the safety dome, so he did the only thing he thought possible. He relinquished his position as the Grand Guardian of The Miraculous to Ladybug.
The box immediately disappeared from the dome and appeared in Mari’s arms. Without wasting a second she used her hidden weapon and stabbed her opponent in the thigh in order to subdue her. Her cries of pain were enough to attract Hawkmoth's attention from Chat Noir, with whom he had just engaged in battle. He immediately went to comfort his partner, using his champions as a barricade to protect them. He escaped. Or rather Mari let him escape. Because she couldn't stop looking at her Master’s body. He was dead. Died protecting the Miraculous. Inside her she felt some piece of her break. Death wasn’t new for her, but it felt surreal to believe the man that saw her grow and taught her almost everything she knew was dead. But there was no time to mourn, a soldier only mourned after the war, and this war was far from being over. But at that moment, looking at the lifeless body of her Master she made a vow to herself.
She would not rest until Hawkmoth perished.
And she would make sure that before he did, it hurt

Had a funny idea for a cursed AU I talked about on discord with @itskarmalone : Ladybug!Isshin.
Tumblr media
The whole point of this AU is… That this may as well happened BEFORE Ichigo became a Shinigami.. Also, Isshin’s presence has an effect on others ever since he arrived in Paris:
He managed to make Nathalie quit to make Gabriel lose business and support
Fu gets a safe identity before Hawkmoth and Mayura even found out his identity. Marianne gets to be with Fu very soon (Isshin: Kids! You got a new grandpa and grandma.)
Tikki finds this man insane enough to finish the job but doesn’t question it after learning his past (he may have been a Shinigami in the past but what’s the worst that could happen? Chaotic domino or butterfly effect, Tikki. Chaotic domino or butterfly effect.)
Dynamic between Chat Noir and Ladybug!Isshin is very chaotic
Due the gravitating personality Isshin got, the man eventually met Jagged Stone and they both got along great. (There is no Truth happening. Kids either knows already or kinda figured it out Isshin comments the dynamic between Anarka and Jagged)
Bonus: Start pounding, Hawkmoth (inspired and suggested by that one video itskarmalone sent)

In which Marinette is Bruce Wayne’s first adopted child
It’s not a fic, but I love all the bio dad au and the headcanons where Marinette is adopted by any of the DC character, so I wanted to do my own. Hope you all like it!
I apologize for any spelling and grammars errors, English is not my first language. I hope it’s still intelligible.
.
Bruce hears about the Parisian heroes from Alfred (I like the idea that he was a former miraculous user in WW2 with Fu and Marianne, but not for the Peacock or the Butterfly, maybe the Rooster? Or if Fu has the turtle and Marianne had the bee, then he can have the Fox?)
So, Bruce is just starting as Batman, but already he’s doing good work. The Justice League is not even a thought as this time, there aren’t a lot of vigilantes and heroes yet. Alfred doesn’t really tell him what is going on in Paris, but he trusts his father figure and gets to work.
Once in Paris, Bruce realizes very quickly that Ladybug and Chat Noir are teenagers. The magic may be protecting their identity, but their speech patterns betrays their true ages.
So, Batman helps them. They find Hawkmoth and I’m handwaving this part because I didn’t want to think too hard about it, but Sabine and Tom are dead, and somehow the miraculous cure can’t bring them back. (Maybe Chat was killed by Hawkmoth too and when Chat’s transformation fell it shocks Gabriel enough, that it allows Marinette and Batman to take him down. Again, not sure about this part.)
So, Marinette is now a fifteen years old orphaned girl, former hero of Paris, Guardian of powerful magic artifacts and Batman just offered to adopt her.
She says yes. She can’t stay in Paris. She needs time to heal and recover. The kwamis encourage her too. Duusu and Nooroo need to heal too and it’s better if there are no Miraculous left in Paris after everything that happened.
And so, Marinette moves in Wayne Manor. Alfred helps a lot, him being a former miraculous holder, and slowly Marinette gets better.
A few months after Marinette’s adoption, Batman is joined on patrol by Ladybird. Her suit is entirely black with two red spots on her hips? Or on her thighs? She has a domino mask with the same whiteout as Batman and use the same weapons as him.
(I settled on Ladybird, because I didn’t want to erase her time as Ladybug, but I also wanted to keep the bird theme even if there aren’t been any Robin yet. For the costume, just type ‘black ladybug’ in google imagine and you’ll find what I’m talking about.)
Mostly Marinette will fight without power like Bruce, but sometimes she takes the Miraculous out for a spin. Maybe she uses Kaalki to travel the world and Trixx to stay incognito.
A year after she arrived in Gotham, Bruce comes home with a young boy. His name is Dick Grayson and no matter what he says, she’s not letting him out of the manor to fight crime without pants!
I think with Marinette here, the relationship between Dick and Bruce wouldn’t deteriorate so much? She would be there to smooth things out and to force Bruce to express his feelings more? Maybe? Honestly this AU is so self-indulgent.
Next comes Jason when he tries to steal the Batmobile’s tires and Alfred just show the boy to the guest room he already has prepared. Dick is still a bit jealous, but it’s better because he already had to share Bruce’s attention with Marinette, so he just needs to accommodate for another sibling. Also, Marinette helps him design the Nightwing suit, so Jason can take over the Robin’s duties.
And now it’s Batman, Ladybird, Nightwing and Robin running around Gotham at night and there’s a curious boy with a camera following them. He’s mostly focused on Batman and Robin, and he’s very discreet and quick on his feet, so Ladybird is the one who catches him when her patrol route crossed with Batman and Robin’s.
After listening to his very enlightening world vomit that reminded her of herself, Ladybird takes Tim Drake back to the manor. Alfred sighed a bit, because if Miss Marinette is starting to pick up Master Bruce’s habits, there won’t be any room left in the Manor. Bruce doesn’t realize that he has a new son until the following morning at the breakfast table.
It doesn’t take long until the Drakes sign over custody of their son to Bruce Wayne. They really don’t want to go to court for neglect and abuse. Imagine the scandal.
Marinette helps Tim creates his hero suit. Jason is still Robin, so Tim will be Red Robin. Marinette can’t tell you how glad she is that the green is finally gone.
And then, Jason is manipulated and kidnapped by the Joker and it takes far too long to find him. Marinette uses the Snake Miraculous’ second chance to save her little brother. Once she knows where he is, she portaled to the location with Kaalki and saves him. The Joker may or may not survive. Not her fault he passed out in the warehouse before his bomb went off. It creates some frictions with Bruce, but ultimately everyone is just very relieved that Jason is alive. That’s when he stops being Robin and chose a new alias. Maybe Jaybird? BlueJay? I have no idea for his name.
Years goes by. Cassandra Cain is adopted too. Marinette is glad to have a sister now. Too much testosterone in the manor.
And then Talia drops Damian on Bruce. Maybe Son of Batman style, except that the whole Batfamily is there to help out, not just Dick.
And that’s all for now.

i love that i can build my dream team of units in 3h but the recruitment really does take away from the story. i wish theyd just done what fates did. some recruitable in any house, some who never leave their house, and some like hilda who join all but one house. like, ferdinand and petra would work as people who fight the empire. maybe marianne doesnt care for the kingdom or empire but would join the church. show how the war divides people. make me sad when i have to kill people.
Yeah, exactly. Do you ever get that feeling when you get to fully indulgence yourself and then realize a moment too late "oh, actually this is too much after all and I understand why it was limited"?
3H makes me feel that. Both with recruitment and routes ("yes! No pussy-ass golden route! ...actually this is really unsatisfying and awkward, could I get a route that brings it all together please").
Like--they just made weird choices in 3H with the characters, ones that I think are just too much audience indulgence, to the point where the plot is damaged.
The recruitment. The recruitment gimmick leads to so many problems.
3H has one of the smallest FE casts. You'd think this would result in a game where every character is carefully considered and worked into the story and meaningful to the plot...
...and you'd be totally wrong!
Everyone who can be recruited cannot affect the plot.
I don't mean, "I recruited Sylvain but he doesn't show up in cutscenes because I'm playing Wind". I mean, it's never a guarantee that an enemy will be in x route, because you can recruit most everyone.
So Ferdinand can't be a miniboss in Wind that displays split loyalty to Edelgard because of his noble guilt and you can convince him to abandon his cause and give you a deep, complicated conversation about loyalty and belief and responsibility. Because you might have Ferdinand!
So, no student aside from the retainers can have any function beyond Team Huddle Peanut Gallery. No recruitable can have any role in the plot, because the writers can never know whether they belong to the player. What makes that even worse is that because of the game's same-plot-in-every-path decision (so they could reuse maps, cough) it's easiest for the writer to not rely on native units to majorly figure in the plot, because Team Church will have pretty different resources from Team Alliance and so Seteth's unique circumstances can't cause him to make a decision that he'd make with Church but not Alliance.
So that's how the dominos fall! You get the same rough plot outline to every path because when you can have every character, it leaves the story with no characters.
tl;dr "yay! I can save everyone! ...wait, this actually shoves all the characters out of the plot and I don't like it very much"
(and in 3H it's especially bad because they did go out of their way to have damn near everyone fucked up with Crests, so it just feels bizarre that people with huge anguish over Crests like Marianne and Sylvain can't get special focus to react to the bloody origins so--I've gone on about this elsewhere, haven't I)

Bob & Sam Part 1: The History of Rock n’ Roll and the Gift of Awkwardness
The mid-’90s were a weird, but maybe perfect, time for an awkward nerd growing up in rural Nebraska to get into rock n’ roll. By that point, the genre of rock was over forty years old. The ‘90s saw the rise of hip-hop, electronica, rap-rock/nu-metal, third-wave ska, and the swing revival vying for the youngster’s ears and eyeballs. The World Wide Web was in its infancy and MTV still played music videos regularly.
Once I had my epiphanic experience in the summer between seventh and eighth grade (of which I’ll write about in Part Two of this series), I knew I had some catching up to do if I were to be more than proficient in my domain. Besides subscribing to Guitar World and raiding my father’s vast record collection, the number one way I dove into rock n’ roll history was by buying dozens and dozens and hundreds of compact discs at On Cue, the solitary corporate retailer of multimedia for the entire panhandle of Nebraska. It was one of several chain stores such as Sam Goody, Sun Coast, and Tower Records that have as much cultural presence in 2020 as the works of Ozymandias. How strange it is to think that there were once publicly-traded corporations who bolstered their quarterly earnings reports through the physical sales of expensive shiny, plastic discs in thin, plastic squares. I was such a regular at On Cue in those formative years of adolescence, that the manager--her name was Traci--knew me by name before I hit high school. She could always count on me for a sale. At that time, she seemed quite grown-up and worldly, but in reality, she was probably a world-weary 22-year-old who had not yet found a way to escape the stultifying ruralopolis of western Nebraska. Where is Traci now? She and I both share a certain kind of workplace history. I was once a Blockbuster Customer Service Representative, so she and I are both former employees of defunct business models that seemed fun, hip, and cool at the time. On Cue and Blockbuster were the two primary ways people in our hometown acquired movies and music. Traci must be closer to fifty than forty now. Though I am sure she and I conversed back then about what music she liked, my memory jar containing those conversations is as bare as the “lone and level sands [that] stretch far away.”
Anyhow, one day back in 1996, my mom and I were shopping at On Cue, and I saw a ten-part VHS documentary set called The History of Rock n’ Roll. This blue cinder block of tapes looked just like what I needed to get caught up on forty years of music. I believe the original retail price was something like $120, which adjusted for inflation today would cost $196.09, almost twenty dollars a tape! No wonder those giant companies were raking it in before being slayed by Napster, iTunes, Netflix, and YouTube. I remember my mom haggling with Traci to see about getting a lower price, but there was nothing she could do. (Thank you, Mom, for still purchasing the set and contributing to my development as a musician!) I enthusiastically watched every tape in the series and took feverish notes of every artist and song that I should check out, and perhaps learn to play on the guitar. This was my introduction to singers and groups like Fats Domino, The Kinks, Buddy Holly, Marianne Faithful, Credence Clearwater Revival, the Clash, and the Sex Pistols.   There was one musician though, a famous one, that I wasn’t so sure about. This folkie guy, Bob Dylan, his stuff didn’t rock. His attitude on camera didn’t seem particularly rock star-ish, even though I totally see NOW there is such a breezy cool to his aloofness. And that voice was so strange and off-putting.  But as the tape rolled on, there was a B & W clip of him playing a bluesy tune with some really square rhymes: “It’s Alright, Ma (I’m Only Bleeding).” And it struck me with a strange kind of logic that only appeals to a young, insecure soul. See, when I started out on my guitar-playing journey, I wanted to be Slash.  I wasn’t anywhere close to being Slash. For one thing, I didn’t have the top hat. I didn’t have the hair. Or the Gibson Les Paul. Or the Marshall JCM Slash Signature 2555SL 2-Channel 100-Watt Guitar Amp. Oh, and I also couldn’t play four chords with the same strumming pattern twice in a row… ...but when I heard this Bob Dylan guy, who was somehow, inexplicably, included on this $120 ten-tape documentary series with all these other musicians who seem to have the talent, presence, and sound of being rock stars, something clicked in my mind. I thought: “Huh. Well, that guy’s voice isn’t that pretty, but he sounds clever and he’s playing solo. Maybe I can play solo and sing until I get a band together.” So, that’s what I did. And at the 1996 Haig Country School Talent Show, I performed as a singer-songwriter for the first time ever. I even gave a shout out to Bob before I proceeded to dazzle the audience with the brilliance of searing slides on my Stratocaster(-copy) guitar and tickle their brains with peculiar lyrical puzzles. See for yourself. Uh, yeah, so....every musical journey has to start somewhere, right? And history was made that day, and I owe it all to Mr. Robert Zimmerman for blazing the trail of rock n’ roll awkwardness.
I’m still catching up. The next installment of this occasional series of essays concerning the enigmatic and ethereal influence of Bob Dylan on my quarter-century musical journey will focus on the success and popularity of other artists covering his songs. That forthcoming installment is tentatively titled “The Dylan-esque Quality of Elasticity.” Thank you for reading.
