Playing with The Gentle Tarot

I just received the Gentle Tarot this week in the post and I fell in love with it immediately. I got the linen edition which is the medium-sized version and the card stock is a dream. The images and Mari’s writings (the creator) are just so heartfelt it made me feel emotional going through the cards. I absolutely loved the quote on the welcome card that reads “Sending so much love to you and to our paths towards wholeness.” Absolutely beautiful.

Before I properly got started with spreads and shuffling up all the cards I went through each card and specifically had a look at the ones that confused me. The ones that I needed the most help with were the court cards and a few of the cards which lent more heavily into animal symbolism. I think this is the first closest animal deck that I have so just taking the time to get my head around that. (Side note I’m super excited to pre-order the mini oak, ash and thorn soon!!)

So the first spread I did was a deck interview spread, this is always the first spread that I’ll do. It’s just a nice, easy way to get to know the deck, the cards, how it reads and start to build a bit of a relationship together. I used the interview spread that I got with the deck from my littleredtarot order which was a 6-card spread. I loved the variety of questions this spread had, particularly the question asking the deck ‘what can I do for you in return’, I’d never seen that question phrased particularly like that in an interview spread before. From this spread I learnt that the deck is nourishing, nurturing, empowering, confident and playful. Something that I didn’t completely expect was that it asked that I need to be ready to receive the messages and aware of my own bad habits to work best with the deck. I really enjoyed doing the interview spread and it was this first spread that solidified my love for this deck.

The next day I decided to do one of the deck-specific spreads, the “lift me up” one. I liked this spread a lot, because I was a little worried the messages from this deck would be ‘too gentle’ in that they would be all uplifting talk but no tangible actions to take away. But this spread really showed me that it wasn’t going to be like that for me. From this spread it showed me the power I have, but how I need to let go of the worries and just keep moving forward (while looking after myself of course). And I thought that’s really quite great advice for myself at the moment, just keep some steady momentum forward and let go of the worries. The worrying has been a big thing getting in the way for me currently.

All in all I would say that I feel such a connection to this deck, I am so happy I took the plunge to get it. I knew I wanted it for a while, but I was unsure if it would resonate with me. I didn’t know how a more animal focused decks would feel and I knew a lot of it was based on the Aleutian Islands, I thought this might create a bit of a disconnect when trying to work with it. But I would have to say most definitely not. This is slowly but surely making its way up to becoming one of my favourite decks.

This morning, I asked the cards “What does Spirit want me to know?” I drew the 3 of Cups, the Hierophant and Hermit from The Gentle Tarot. 🌟 First and foremost, I am not alone in all of this. I am surrounded by a circle of friends and family, help and support. Even though I am on a journey that will bring me to new places, I am not on my own. There are others who walk beside me. 🌟 I also need to take some time to listen to my Spirit more often. I can’t keep listening to the will of the mind and the worries that it holds. I need to know that my Spirit supports and cares for me and that it is a light within the dark, always shining brightly. 🌟 I should be taking more time for myself, to allow myself to connect with my Spirit and the cosmos that I hold within me. I am filled with stardust and magic and I need to stop and look at the stars within and the wisdom that I hold. 🌟 It’s so easy to forget that I’m not alone on my journey and lose sight of what truly matters in all of this. I am a being that is full of so much light and love and I need to remember that as much as I show others love, I have to love myself. The Gentle Tarot is a wonderful deck for pre-order right now by Alaska-based indigenous artist Mariza Aparicio-Tovar or Mari in the Sky! This deck ran a campaign on Kickstarter and was fully funded. It’s a 79-card fully illustrated deck that is nature inspired deck with brown and dark skin indigenous representation and beautiful soft illustrations and color schemes. The deck itself is 350gsm cardstock with matte gold gilded edges, and comes with a 196-page guide book in a rigid 2-piece box. Price for pre-orders will increase after December from the original campaign pricing. Card of the Day - Five of Wands From “The Gentle Tarot” by Maritza Ryce Aparicio-Tovar (aka Mari in the Sky). @mariinthesky https://thegentletarot.com I normally introduce the deck first in my posts, but this hits hard upon my chest. Don’t back down. This feels very heartily of the “Do no harm, but take no shit” vibe, straight out. In Mari’s deck book, which I will speak on below, she beautifully speaks on a variety of takes for her version of the card that powerfully depicts two bears in a power dance with one another, and I’ve included it here. But seriously, today, take care of yourself. Taking no shit might come from your internal voice too. That all said, wow, I am so touched and opened up by this deck. Reading the introduction to the beautiful booklet, followed by the descriptions for the first four cards, I literally found myself with tears in my eyes. With the deck’s subtitle being “Heal Yourself, Heal the Earth” I can feel that gentle connection to the web of all that is present in this deck. My lips taste it buzzing with the taste of salmon berries and salmon over an open fire, which was hilarious to them find the Fool card as a young salmon, ha! My practice as a spirit worker feels so deeply drawn to this deck. It’s imagery is influenced by the indigenous Alaskan woman’s environment that wraps around her, and brings me back to a recent conversation that Western society thinks of us as being separate from nature, as compared to being part of a web that affects one another, literally with every breath. I’m not usually a fan of this heavy card stock that makes it hard for me to shuffle - I sold my Brady Tarot for that reason. But it feels appropriate here. It makes me slow down, and the sturdy stack even doubles as a card holder to meditate on a card. Thank you Mother for bringing this deck into my world. I am glad I supported the Kickstarter, and thank you to the artist/creator and all others involved for your passion and hard work. This morning, I asked the cards "What journey am I beginning today?" I drew the 9 of Wands from The Gentle Tarot. A Lynx hides behind the wormwood that grows, almost invisible in the moonlight. This is a stance of protection. It relies on all it knows to watch and to listen. The Lynx thrives because it survives. This will not be an easy journey, but I am stronger than I know. I must rely on my inner strength and resilience so that I can see my way forwards. This month is all about taking my time, about listening to my spirit and being aware of my body. I have to remember that my space is sacred and that it's okay to protect myself but I need to listen to my body, mind and spirit to make sure that I am still on the right path. This will be a long journey and protection starts from within. As I begin the countdown to my medication change, I know that it's also a change of life for me. Yes, I am afraid, but I know that I have also been through so much and survived everything that was put into my path, regardless of what it was. This morning, i asked the cards "How do I let go and let good?" I drew the Hermit from The Gentle Tarot. What a beautiful card for today! ⭐ I was filled with worry yesterday after my appointment with my neurologist. It's the not knowing that throws me off balance. However, I can't sit with worry for ten days until I get my results. That would undo me. ⭐ The Hermit is asking me to sit in my own company and look to the stars around me. The Fox sits in his den and the walla are covered in stars. He looks to them for answers and so he can find his way. ⭐ What I am hearing from the Hermit is that I am not lost in worry, I have only to find my way through it. I will learn what I can from it and then release it to the stars that surround me. I drew the Flower of Thunder or the Queen of Swords from The Gentle Tarot. 🗡 The Eagle has risen above thr storm to look down at the havoc it it causing. She grabs hold of the lighting with her talons, taking control of her overactive mind. The sun is bright behind her, bringing clarity to her mind. She rises above negativity and embraces more powerful emotions like joy.
