"Major Manta appreciation post for the first ever World Manta Day! 💙 • Manta rays are such magnificent beings, some with a wingspan of up to 7m across! I was fortunate enough to dive in Revillagigedo on @solmarv where you can find one of the biggest manta ray aggregations in the world. On some dives we had 8 mantas hanging with us for the entire time, weaving in and out of our bubble columns🤗 • Sadly manta rays and their smaller cousins the devil rays face various threats from humans, such as being fished for pseudo-remedies in traditional medicine in regions of China and East Asia. Manta Ray getting tickled by my bubbles at a cleaning station on the Moofushi reef in the Maldives. The mantas were dancing for us the whole dive, there were up to six individuals. Luckily it was a disciplined group, we were calm and kept good distance to the cleaning station. Then one of the mantas got confident and got a massage by my air bubbles. Thanks to amazing new research by MMF scientists, @universityofwesternaustralia, University of Papua, @udayana_university, @murdochuniversity and @macquarieuni 🙌 Watch the video and follow the link in our bio to find out more. • The term melanism refers to black pigment and is derived from the Greek: μελανός. Melanism is the increased development of the dark-colored pigment melanin in the skin or hair. Pseudomelanism, also called abundism, is another variant of pigmentation, identifiable by dark spots or enlarged stripes, which cover a large part of the body of the animal, making it appear melanistic. The morbid deposition of black matter, often of a malignant character causing pigmented tumors, is called melanosis. Melanism related to the process of adaptation is called adaptive. Most commonly, dark individuals become fitter to survive and reproduce in their environment as they are better camouflaged. This makes some species less conspicuous to predators, while others, such as black panthers, use it as a foraging advantage during night hunting. Typically, adaptive melanism is heritable: A dominant allele, which is entirely or nearly entirely expressed in the phenotype, is responsible for the excessive amount of melanin. Adaptive melanism has been shown to occur in a variety of animals, including mammals such as squirrels, many felines and canids, and coral snakes. Adaptive melanism can lead to the creation of morphs, the most notable example being the peppered moth, whose evolutionary history in the United Kingdom is offered as a classic instructional tool for teaching the principles of natural selection. When I saw her last she was pregnant and now it looks like recently she gave birth! Sadly she has a truncated cephalic lobe but it looks like she is doing super well without it and it’s healed well.
