The Koopalings Are Not Bowser's Children

So I realize I have not made a post addressing the Koopalings and their status, only ever referring to it in passing. So as we know the Koopalings in the manuals were called Bowser's Kids, and that this led to external media such as the Super Mario Adventures comic and Super Mario Bros. 3 show depicting him as his kids.

While this was the original intention this was retconned and the Koopalings went from being Bowser's kids to his commanders. Note: There might have never been a retcon to begin with, however they still aren't his kids. I made another post going into detail on why this is. In a Gameinfomer titled Mario's Creators Answer Burning Questions About The Series interview when asked "In Super Mario Bros. 3, the Koopalings were supposed to be Bowser's children. But there's also Bowser Jr. Are they all his kids, and are they all from different mothers? Is Bowser Jr. a Koopaling?" Miyamoto responded with the following "Our current story is that the seven Koopalings are not Bowser's children. Bowser's only child is Bowser Jr., and we do not know who the mother is."

While many people have come to the conclusion that they are still his kids and they are just adopted, this isn't accurate. First off the intent is that they aren't his kids anymore, and you are still someone's kid if you are adopted.

The next part is the simple fact that they are never called his kids in any newer media. On the official website for NSMBWD they are only referred to as "leaders of Bowser's Troops." In cards they aren't called his children either.

The Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia outside of lifted text from old manuals which the Encyclopedia even notes, the Koopalings are never called his kids.

There is also the fact in game they are never called his kids, nor any implication they are adopted.

There is also the fact that they are too old to be his kids, and could even be as old as Bowser if not close to his age. In Color Splash Roy talks about attending night school or in other words he's in college. "I guess I'll just have to hope Lord Bowser can defeat you…" "Yeah, I know what irony is. BOOM. Knowledge is power, so I started going to night school."

There is the fact that the Koopalings only ever refer to Bowser by titles such as Lord Bowser and never father or stepdad, and they do the same for BJ calling him Lord Junior. They never talk about Jr being their brother, they talk about how he will be their boss one day, and they are even called his friends. "That punk will eventually be our boss!" "All right, Lord Junior.. We'll be facing off against Shy Guys in this next battle." "Well, he is Bowser's kid. There were bound to be some speed bumps." "They say that helicopter parenting doesn't work anyway. Just let 'em run wild!"

When Bowser asks them to watch over Junior they don't watch over him like older siblings, and even refer to it as being a form of parenting. They even directly refer to him as Bowser's Kid. There is also the fact Bowser beat up Iggy after making fun of Junior in front of Bowser. With all that being said, the Koopalings are not Bowser's kids but rather his underlings.

Sketchdump of our beloved Mario Bros in casual wear! I had a lot of fun with these, so much so that I think I’ll do a sketchdump for Peach, Daisy and other characters !We’ll see, have some bite-sized headcanons on Mario and Luigi!

-> Mario and Luigi are the heroes of MK, even though they are heroes they are also the plumbers of Brooklyn, in the near future Mario will be the future king of MK and Luigi will be king of Sarasaland.

-> Mario's sexuality is transmasc bisexual, as I changed my LGBT headcanons, but he sometimes identifies as pansexual. Luigi is bisexual, transgender.

I know it’s probably easier to just say that the Koopalings’ designs in SMB3 were retconned and thus are no longer important to consider, but I actually like the idea of them having actually changed their colors. Perhaps this is another Dragon-Koopa exclusive trait, though maybe it could be Koopas in general? Maybe it’s something similar to cephalings in Splatoon: it was initially evolved as a camouflage technique but then in modern times it’s used more for fashion. Idk I’ll sit on this a bit more, but I do like the idea of the Koopalings’ SMB3 colors still being canon to when they were younger.

One of the other Marios visiting the 1993 universe, using his knowledge of warp pipes (gained since living in the Mushroom Kingdom, if it's a version that came from Brooklyn, or throughout his life as he initially studied to be a plumber, if it's a version that was born there) to construct a pipe between that universe and its parallel one, using a piece of the meteorite as a conduit to link the two realities through the Warp Zone. He does this in a way that still keeps the two realities separate, as they should be, but still provides a stable bridge to freely traverse between the two as one pleases.

That would be a very sweet thing for one of the Mario's to do ^^

What if it's all the Mario's, and they help each other figure out and create/stabilise the connections between their Brooklyns and Mushroom Kingdoms? Game Mario would use all his knowledge of the warp pies from his world as best as he can, as he doesn't come from another world in his universe.

You know what would be terrific? If in the remake of RPG, the Higher Authority that sends Geno is implied to be Rosalina. And you know what IS terrific? The fact it could actually happen! In the original, that entity was a no-name mystery for the players, but since we do have a divinity in the mario gallery now, such retconning is totally doable.

It wouldn't even be the first time Nintendo mixes stuff from newer games within remakes anyway, just think of Bowser Jr and the Koopalings' inclusion in the new version of Bowser's Inside Story.

before Nintendo decided to make Shy guys part of Bowser's army in every game ever, i always had a headcanon that after the end of yoshi's island, the shy guys stumbled on some kinda portal which landed them in the subcon world from smb2.

Universe Reset

The ending of Super Mario Galaxy seems to imply that after Bowser seemed to have destroyed the universe with the black hole, that the universe was reset. That this new universe it is similar to what was before but slightly different.

I have a hypothesis that in the original timeline that the universe resetting is the in universe cause of retcons such as the Koopalings once being Bowser's kids but are now just his henchmen. Edit, said hypothesis is unlikely and that's no how the universe resetting works. All it did was undo the events of the first game and the Star Festival.

Also, many people think Rosalina reset the universe, but she didn't. It was the Lumas, the stars. She even says so herself.

OK TIME TO RESPOND TO THIS!

I have multiple AUs! I’ll just go over two out of the main three I have. They might sound a bit complicated, though!

WARNING… there is quite a bit of text. And images. Be prepared.

1: “HAPPY ENDING” AU

Basically my main AU is pretty simple compared to others! It’s one of those “what if ___ happened differently?” types. So Olivia, instead of wishing for all origami folded by Olly to be undone, wishes for everyone to go back to living happily! I’m not sure how much sense such a wish makes in the way I wrote it, but essentially, it brings back MOST of the casualties that happened during the canon game. (Exceptions are mostly just the Bob-ombs like Bobby, because I had this whole thing where Bobby’s happier having served his purpose in life getting to save his new friends, and bringing him back to life would ruin the impact of his sacrifice, + he can see his old best friend in whatever the true afterlife is like in the PMTOK universe.)

Olly comes back, the LoS come back, and the Origami Castle is reverted into Peach’s Castle, so Peach can live normally and so can the rest of the Mushroom Kingdom. Confusion on Olly’s part ensues, as he definitely remembers dying and thinks he’s in the afterlife at first, but eventually he adjusts to his surroundings. Skipping ahead, the Origami Craftsman, having already realized how unfitting his role as the origami siblings’ father figure is due to the fear that came from having his own creation nearly destroy the world, plus his own fixation towards origami getting in the way of him being able to take care of anyone, decides he needs to let the siblings go and have a better guide and role model in their lives. This winds up being Mario and Peach! Basically, Olivia’s already bonded to Mario the most of anyone after all their journey together, and Olly needs to have an eye kept on him to make sure he really won’t try anything dangerous again. Peach, being a princess and therefore royalty, also winds up being a great role model for the two siblings— Olivia especially grows attached to Peach, the two both being princesses, and Olivia always wanting to have “lady friends” (she’s very fond of women/girls. Whether that’s just admiring their beauty, charm, or something more!).

Olly takes a long time to get adjusted, especially when he realizes he’s going to have to work alongside Toads, and a lot of them. He’s mostly told to follow in the footsteps of Mario to become a hero rather than a cruel king, but he has a very hard time adjusting because he still holds some contempt towards the plumber. Nonetheless, though, Olly still admires the ability and strength of Mario, and still sees him as a strong, beautiful man.

Ah. It’s worth it to mention I portray Olly as someone who really focuses on beauty, but in kind of a screwed up way, like “You’re so beautiful, I want to keep you as a decoration I can look at when I please”. He admires Mario’s looks, but only because he finds his colors striking and “crisp”, as he once said in canon (not to mention he thinks of Mario as a strong man he’d need in his army in the Japanese version’s prologue).

But anyway, I digress. This stuff is essentially just a build up to having more character interactions that are closer to canon but not following the exact story of it. Olivia and Olly get their own rooms in Peach’s Castle, where they live their and through Olivia’s encouragement and even scolding of bad behaviors, Olly is able to improve himself and live normally, finally achieving true happiness and peace in life, something he never once was able to experience in the canon story.

2: HUMANIZED AU

This is a semi-standard human AU, except with extra lore and several exceptions for who’s a human here.

To sum up the latter, Olivia, Olly, and the LoS are now human, while all other NPCs such as Bobby, the Toads, Shy Guys, and Bowser, stay the same. This is a little stupid, but all characters, despite not looking like paper at all, are still paper and can be cut up. This is because I don’t want to actually severely change the canon story here, so I want to keep real gore to the minimum while still allowing for the body horror in the original game. It’s… basically something that only works if you imagine it on a flat screen.

Anyway, here, special magic within the Fold of Life can result in the creation of human forms of the folded origami. The origami paper originally used is then transformed into a pendant— this pendant being a Magic Circle.

…okay I’m not going to lie writing EVERYTHING for this specific AU is a BIIIITCH so I’m just going to post really old screenshots here instead teehee

Anyway yeah, some information is absolutely going to be a bit outdated on those screenshots, but like I said, Olly and Olivia’s souls are in their pendants. In the old art I put here, I compare the whole soul thing to Steven Universe, but another good comparison would be to Madoka Magica!! (Both series hold special places in my heart even after all this time… so I guess I must’ve taken inspiration.)

Anything they transform into, will be origami. They can still transform into the Vellumentals and they will look exactly like canon.

ANYWAY. I’ll get more into this AU in some other post, probably, but if you have any questions, please feel free to ask! I’d be more than happy to clear anything up, although I’m not perfect and these AUs are all super self indulgent rather than anything professional, so I may answer SOME things with “yeaaaah I didn’t really think this through”. LMAO

might be worth mentioning that the bros' separation scene perfectly recreates the yoshi's island opening scene, in which mario and luigi are ripped from each other without warning, then the rest of the movie seems to be mainly about rescuing luigi from bowser's land -- very similar to the plot of yoshi's island. it's clear they're directly referencing the game, which leads me to two potential conclusions:

one being that yoshi's island is still canon, and this movie's gonna do that trope where they recreate an event that occurred earlier in a character's life (which probably has a name but i dunno how good of an example that is to find on tv tropes) which would mean my theory that the bros were born in mushroom kingdom and got sent to brooklyn at a young age stil l could hold ground;

or two, they've kinda retconned yoshi's island, instead basically having the primary plot in the game occur when the bros are adults and without the (initial) assistance of yoshis (they're still going to have a big role in the movie i can feeeeel it like yoshi's island was on that map in peach's castle in the second trailer).

i truly, truly hope it's the former. i honestly feel like it'd make a really interesting plot point.
