Ever wondered about Anabel's family and childhood best friend?? No?? Well you're about to find out!!

Anabel Lee: The younger daughter (Wildheart Barbarian)

Anabel is the younger, more rebellious daughter in the Lee family. Like the rest, she grew up in Elturel, until the Blood War and the subsequent kicking out of all Tieflings, where the Lee family moved to the Lower City and built a hotel. Anabel then spent her adolescence there, getting into trouble with her sister, Joy, and her best friend, Audrey, as well as another Tiefling girl they don't really remember. Anabel initially trained to be a Cleric, but her temper and impatience led her to find a new path, inspired by her father- a Barbarian. Later, after Audrey went off to do some darker things in life, Anabel and Joy left home to go adventuring. During this adventuring in her 20s, Anabel was taken aboard the Mindflayer ship during a sexual encounter, and infected by the tadpole. Meeting fellow infected friends and forming a party, Anabel set out to find a cure, eventually settling on the option of the exceptionally handsome devil, Raphael, who she fell in love with and signed a contract with. After fulfilling her duties and destroying the Elder Brain, Anabel parted ways with her party, and went on to become Raphael's bride, residing in the Hells with him as "the Devil's Bride," helping him conquer the rest of the realm. They had a grand wedding in Avernus, where her family and, reluctantly, her old friends from the party showed up, although this was only for Anabel's sake, not Raphael's.

Joy Lee: The older daughter (Circle of the Moon Druid)

Sharing a backstory with Anabel up until the tadpole part, Joy was also infected, but she had been kidnapped during a simple walk in nature. She later encountered her sister and her newfound party while wandering the forest, and Joy joined up with them. She became exceptionally close with Karlach, and in the quest to help her fix her infernal engine, Joy met Dammon, an infernal mechanic. Immediately charmed, Joy couldn't wait to meet up with him again, and neither could Karlach. Once they reached the Last Light Inn and encountered Dammon again, he repaired her engine enough to where Karlach was able to be touched. Joy was the first hug that Karlach was able to receive, and she was overjoyed. Joy was also very thankful to Dammon, and shyly asked him if once this was all over, he'd consider going for a walk in the forest with her. He accepted, and after all was said and done, he took her up on her offer, and the two began a relationship. During the journey, Joy also helped Karlach in her quest, and ultimately Karlach and Wyll went to Avernus. This upset Joy greatly, but she could not stop her friends from doing so. Joy was also later one of the bridesmaids at Anabel's wedding to Raphael, where she was able to briefly reunite with Karlach and Wyll since they were in Avernus.

Marion Lee: the mother (civilian) and Ricardo Lee: the father (Beserker Barbarian)

Meeting when they were teenagers in Elturel, Marion and Ricardo have had a strong, loving relationship for their whole time together. They had Joy two years after they married in their 20s, and Anabel a year later. They were both caring and loving parents, although all the love in the world was unable to tame their wild spirits. They did not resent their daughters for it, though. After the Blood War began, Ricardo went to fight in it, and Marion was left alone with her daughters. He did manage to send her letters every week, each time promising he'd be home in one piece. Ricardo was a fierce warrior, unafraid of almost everything, and he inspired Anabel to go the path of Barbarian when she failed at being a Cleric. Ricardo returned when Joy and Anabel were in their late teens, and the Tieflings were removed from Elturel. After moving to the Lower City, Ricardo and Marion built and began to run a hotel, which they still do. Despite Ricardo's past in the Blood War, neither of them were angry with Anabel for marrying Raphael- in fact, they were happy that she found someone who actually tolerates her.

Audrey Keller: The best friend (Assassin Rogue)

Like the Lee family, Audrey and her family were kicked out of Elturel for being Tieflings when Audrey was a teen. Her home life was rather unpleasant, with parents who hated each other and often neglected her, so she resorted to getting into trouble to escape it and to lash out at them. Audrey became friends with Anabel and Joy when they were children, and the three got up to all kinds of things throughout their childhood and adolescence. However, simple teenage goofing off became something much worse when Audrey came home to find her father beating her mother, so she killed him. Audrey's mother, despite being saved, was horrified by this, and sent her away. Audrey then decided she was good for nothing but killing, and left behind Joy and Anabel to become an Assassin for hire. Later on, Audrey encountered Anabel, Joy, and the party, and decided to join them. After Anabel was rejected by Astarion, she told this to Audrey, who then got with Astarion out of spite, and was going to attempt to break his heart. However, the plan backfired, as both were trying to manipulate the other, they discovered their true feelings, and she discovered his past. Audrey went on to help Astarion with his quest and later ascend, in the process becoming a vampire herself. After all was over and done, Audrey went off with Astarion to find a new adventure as their new selves. Audrey was also the maid of honor at Anabel and Raphael's wedding.

So, there's a lot of books that you complain about being awful (most of which I haven't read), usually because of the interpretation of some character (or many characters).

Is the problem with most of these books:

1. That the character on question has been written as a bad person,

2. That the interpretation differs from the Vulgate Cycle,

3. or the specific combination of those two things?

Or have I completely misread this situation?

See the thing is, yes it has to do with interpretation of characters, but perhaps not as superficial as it sounds! While I do love the Vulgate and prefer a more nuanced Mordred, that’s not really the root of the issue. I want Mordred to topple Camelot. I don’t expect or want authors to follow the Vulgate exclusively, there’s plenty from Chrétien or SGATGK or Parzival or the Mabinogion I’d love to see incorporated and they often are! Yay!

The real answer is a complicated thing that can only be expressed through examples because citing “misogyny” or “racism” doesn’t convey the magnitude or severity of the problem. Medieval society was misogynistic and racist at times, I don’t think those things should go ignored in a retelling. It would cheapen the narrative to pretend Guinevere’s or Morgause’s situations weren’t brought about largely due to the patriarchal systems at play nor do I want to pretend everyone who met Palomides was race blind.

So yeah. It isn’t ideal that Lamorak is old in Sword of Lancelot (1963) or Dagonet is stoic and boring in King Arthur (2004). But like, whatever! I like those films! Same goes for replacing Gaheris with Geraint in Sarah Zettel’s series or cutting Gareth out of Gillian Bradshaw’s trilogy. Kind of a bummer, lame even, but not a deal breaker. The things about these bad retellings that drive me mad are much more sinister than that, rooted in really detestable opinions about women and children and people of color.

Can’t Mordred, Agravaine, and Morgan be normal scheming/evil/power hungry like they were in BBC The Legend of King Arthur (1979) or Howard Pyle’s books or Knights of the Round Table (1953) instead of whatever the above are doing? Not to mention the complete violation of Guinevere, Morgause, Lancelot, and Gawain as characters. I’m so tired, man.

Hope this clears things up. Sorry if you made it through that list. I’m sure you hated reading it as much as I hated writing it. But I think it makes it clear the problem here and that I’m not just being picky. The psychic damage is taking its toll.

Lots of Campaign 1 item work this month—Mantle of the Tempest, Circlet of Wisdom, Titanstone Knuckles, Keen Dagger, and Figurine of wondrous power (existing article, new name) were overhauled this month. In related news, the article about the Issylran earth titan (another existing article with a new name), from whom the Knuckles were carved and whom Vecna reanimated, was also overhauled. Alyxian was updated with stats of his various forms.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)

They don’t make movies like Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom anymore - for multiple reasons. Certain aspects of this film will take modern movie-goers aback. You can focus on the dubious cultural depictions, violence and gross-out humor or you can divert your attention to what works: the never-ending tension, action scenes & set pieces, cinematography and the ever-charismatic lead.

In this prequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) narrowly escapes from crime boss Lao Che (Roy Chiao) with his eleven-year-old sidekick Short Round (Ke Huy Quan) and nightclub singer Willie Scott (Kate Capshaw). Unfortunately, they soon find themselves stranded in northern India, where many children have gone missing and a sacred stone - one of the five fabled Shankara stones - has been stolen. Their quest to unravel the mystery brings our heroes to an ancient Thuggee cult who practice dark magic and ritualistic human sacrifices.

In a way, this picture is much lighter than Raiders. We’re not dealing with Nazis. Indy and his little buddy are going up against India’s equivalent of devil-worshippers but the villains are firmly planted in the realm of fantasy. There are many jokes as the boys playfully bicker and roll their eyes at Willie, who has no business being on this adventure but wound up alongside them. Over and over, she’s screaming at the bugs, skeletons, traps and dangers they encounter. The duo would be much better off without the dumb blonde… but abandoning her would be irresponsible. She’s nothing like Karen Allen's Marion and the film makes that clear. If Willie's going to complain about being away from the city, let's give her a real reason to - which means lots and lots of ewwww moments. This is where people might raise an eyebrow. There’s a famous banquet scene where the most stomach-churning foods are served. You may interpret it as a) an implication that all Indians are barbarians that eat eyeballs and snakes (although the good villagers we meet early-on definitely do not) b) an elaborate gag that may or may not resonate with you (humor is subjective, after all) or c) hints that something at this palace is amiss…

Despite the initial tone, this is an intense movie. There are torture and grisly human sacrifices, children are kidnapped/enslaved, people are explicitly killed - often in gruesome manners. The tone is far too intense to be rated PG but it was. The PG-13 rating was only introduced after the MPAA got similar complaints from Gremlins just one month later.

This film isn't as mature as its "successor" and it doesn't feel as polished either, though the filmmaking is still excellent. Once Indy and the gang realize the danger they've stumbled upon, the tension never lets up. Every escape is merely a brief reprieve. A new peril rolls around the next corner, ready to flatten them. It's fast-paced and exciting. Along the way, you also get excellent cinematography and camerawork. The shots which contrast Short Round to his big buddy are terrific. Through quick cuts and parallel actions, the camera says more than words ever could. It's a roller-coaster ride - sometimes literally. You'll be left breathless and maybe even overwhelmed. Is the movie for kids? maybe, maybe not. It's somewhere in between.

Often violent & gruesome and lacking some of the sophistication of Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is a disappointment... but only for this franchise. As a film on its own, or as a "first entry" in a series, it would make you go "wow!" Dated elements aside, it's exciting, memorable and fun. (On Blu-ray, May 22, 2020)

Marion Lavorre: Jester’s mom! (has got it going on) A beautiful red tiefling with a beautiful voice and nurturing presence. Not hostile.

The Gentleman: Jester’s dad! A handsome perpetually moist water genasi who exudes a suave demeanor and works as a crime boss, though the composure can be swiftly dismantled by his daughter. Not initially hostile, but can be made to be.

Isharnai: An old, creepy hag(literally, not as an insult)who enjoys dealing in others’ misery. Was tricked by Jester, who stays in friendly contact with her, into undoing her friend’s curse and is very interested in meeting her again because of it. Potentially hostile.

Avantika: An elf pirate who Jester and her friends ran into on their adventures. Worships the leviathan Uk’otoa (Uk’otoa…) and is very disliked by Jester for her relationship with the tiefling’s friend/crush Fjord. Comes in living and undead flavors! Likely hostile.

The Mighty Nein: Jester’s friends!! The brave, morally-ambiguous adventuring party she traveled with, the people who she would die and kill for more quickly than almost anyone else in the world. Brief summations:

Caleb Widogast: Human wizard. Quiet, bookish, and usually kind of dirty(literally, not as in attitude), but very curious about the arcane. Has a cat familiar named Frumpkin. Nott the Brave: Goblin rogue. A kleptomaniac with a drinking problem, quick to shoot first and ask questions later, but deeply motivated to protect the family she has. Beauregard Lionett: Human monk. A brusque young woman, distrustful and kind of a showoff, but stubborn in the face of adversity and determined to root out corruption wherever she finds it. Fjord: Orc warlock. Handsome and charming, he’s quick to take the main speaking role for his party, though seems to have had some trouble adjusting to actual leadership. Yasha Nydoorin: Aasimar barbarian. Physically imposing in height and muscles, as well as her pale skin contrasting with her black-to-white hair and sunken eyes, but outside of combat is very soft-spoken, sweet, and kind of socially awkward. Mollymauk Tealeaf: Tiefling blood hunter. A charismatic, colorful character, he’s drawn to the weird and theatrical, and seeks to better the world around him even through deceptive means. Caduceus Clay: Firbolg cleric. An incredibly insightful, soothing presence, sure to offer you some tea if given the chance. Spaces out from time to time. Easily keeps the rest of the group grounded. Essek Thelyss: Drow wizard. A hardworking loner, not very good at interacting with people. Time with the Nein has helped him open up, though he’s still likely to be terse around strangers.

Not likely to show up all at once bc let’s not act like the person writing this is going to be RPing six to eight other characters at a time. Not hostile, though they can be a bit abrasive in their own ways.

New Fiction 2023

I struggled with the idea that I need to keep up with everything new, when it's evident that I don't want to. Movies are easy thanks to subscription services like A-List (and a pathological need to get out of the house), but I was consistently happy to dwell in the past for reading and video games.

So I think I'll be more chill about fiction this year. Just follow what feels right.

Slasher/Mystery

After stealing money from her company and going on the run, Marion Crane finds herself spending the night at the Bates Motel. Since she's the only customer, the odd but friendly owner, Norman, strikes up a conversation with her. However, Norman's overbearing mother is not too happy about this.

You should watch if: You want to see the movie that sort of birthed the slasher genera, or at least helped shape it into what it is today. You like classic movies. You like suspense. You want to see what is Hitchcock's best movie, imo at least.

everything I know about critical role campaign 2 (I have not watched it)

hi! I'm a new Critter who as of now has not watched any of campaign 2 aside from random clips in compilations and shit, but thanks to The Internet and also my friends, I know some things now. so before I start watching c2, here is all the stuff I know about it!!

I realized I knew a lot less about c1 than I thought (post here), but I definitely have more c2 knowledge so let's go

here there be spoilers!!! for the whole campaign!!! are they all CORRECT spoilers? probably not. but I do not know! be careful!

player characters

Jester Lavorre is my beloved and she’s played by Laura Bailey. she’s a blue tiefling cleric who worships a god called the Traveler, who I think is just a dude in a cloak who started a cult. I thought she was like 12 but apparently she’s actually an adult, weird. she does sendings that are very funny, and I mimic her horribly every single day bc her voice fills me w joy. she’s from Nicodranus (do I know what or where that is? nope!) she's rich but had a shitty family, and her mom is apparently the best lay ever? not sure what that's about. also I think her spiritual weapon is some sort of baked good bc she really likes them?

Beauregard Lionett, Marisha's character, is the definition of hot monk shit. she is gay and sexy and buff and represses emotions like no one's business. despite my deep love for her, I actually know very little about her backstory or literally anything she does. I do know the important thing though, which is Lesbian.

Yasha Nydoorin is Ashley's character and she's a fallen aasimar barbarian. I pronounce her last name like the Pokemon Nidoran because I have no clue how it's supposed to be. she wears badass makeup but it also might be tattoos or just her skin patterning? also she has skeletal wings sometimes but then through the Power of Love they heal. and she's very buff. she is in loooove with Beau and very shy and awkward. OH she has a dead wife who someone killed because homophobia or something, and she really likes flowers and doesn't know where her wife is buried so she can't bring her flowers :'(

Mollymauk Last Name Here is a funky purple tiefling, Taliesin's first character. he has cool ass clothing and he is so gay. magic??? he is flamboyant and maybe a fuckboi and then he dies in like episode 20. rip. he's friends with Yasha and I think was in a circus.

Caduceus Clay is Taliesin's second character. he's a pink firbolg and he likes tea and I want him to hug me. he worships... somebody... because he's a cleric and heals people. I think he's aroace confirmed? "help, it's again" is the only scene I've seen with him in it.

Caleb Widogast (?) is Liam's human wizard and his last name sounds like a Pokemon. my roommate is obsessed with this man, which makes sense because he is an angsty gay guy. German, apparently doesn’t eat? I am worried for him. he has a cat named Frumpkin and a boyfriend named Essek eventually. he has fire magic and killed his whole family. rip. OH ALSO he grew up in the Empire and was part of a gay polycule???

Nott the Brave/ Veth is Sam's character, and she's a goblin. I do not know if she's 7 years old or a mother, but it's one of those two. also I think she was a different race originally but got turned into a goblin and also hates goblins and also is an alcoholic. sure.

Keg (is that really her name?) is a guest character. she’s a dwarf? and a lesbian and has the hots for Beau. mood.

Fjord ??? I straight up forgot about this man. he's a green guy played by Travis, maybe a half-orc? and he's a pirate. warlock. does he have a last name??

Essek is Caleb’s boyyyyfriend and he’s a purple drow. I think he starts off bad and betrays the party but over time becomes good or something. he can float and is hot!

Zuala I don't think actually shows up but she's Yasha's dead wife. [sobs forever]

Marion Lavorre is Jester's mom and she's a red tiefling who I'm pretty sure is a prostitute?

The Gentleman is apparently Jester's DAD and every time they sent him a message, I thought they were speaking to multiple gentlemen but it turns out it's just one.

Astrid I-don't-know-her-last-name is connected to Caleb somehow. I think she's also a wizard and has tattoos but I know nothing else

plot points

Jester almost gets her hands cut off, but then she persuades the hand-cutter to eat a blueberry cupcake and then casts Modify Memory and avoids getting her hands cut off

Keg and Beau have sex

Jester helps Yasha write a poem for Beau and I have the whole thing memorized

at one point, Fjord, Jester and Yasha got kidnapped but it was because their respective cast members were all gone. I think this is when Keg came in to help the rest of the party find them

M9 favourite moments appreciation post (episode 129)

Putting my thoughts down right now since I can’t sleep... what an episode, whew. Honestly, the gentleman’s response to that message sums it up. These are some of my favourite moments (no particular order) from this wonderful episode.

Caduceus: absolute MVP, a beacon of hope in a battle of desperation, our favourite grave cleric really got to shine this episode in him saving everyone and in particular saving a life taken too soon. The mass cure wounds, the canceled nat 20, the spirit guardian that was steady but deadly and got a HDYWTDT... Cad really gave it his all this episode! I also liked the small moment of Caleb complimenting his idea (it WAS a good idea). Absolutely enjoyed all the beautiful moments with Luc and Cad being a great uncle (Cad is GREAT around kids probably from his experience with his siblings!), also Jester massaging him (Cad deserves the best massages after this episode, like oof). 

Jester: she has had a rough time, but she is trying her best as always! Trying to reassure Marion in a very stressful situation and trying to be strong for her was very much like Jester. As much as it led to some painful consequences, her imagining the future with Veth was actually very touching as she tried to make the best out of a horrible situation that was affecting them all by being her optimistic self and offering hope. I also loved her little moment of helping Caleb with the collar, offering him words of comfort and dissing Trent at the same time. The image of Jester jumping over lava, knowing she could fall at any second, wielding the hand-axe that she never used to protect her friends and family was very beautiful and brave.

Caleb: pushing Caduceus out of danger was his first reaction, standing tall and holding the staff as he was almost completely tapped to face his enemy and protect the people behind him. Caleb also remained calm in combat and used his remaining abilities to their absolute limit, damaging the enemy as much as possible while protecting Veth with his slow spell. Biting his tongue and listening fully to Marion was such a good character development moment for him, I was really really worried about him this episode but I’m very glad that he got to hear that (other party members probably needed it as well). Developing the collar after all that chaos fit his character so well and that grim “it will be soon”. Also, him stepping in front of Veth and taking the dodge action was very impactful. 

Fjord: not touching anything/get tempted in HFB when it mattered the most! Fjord was really mature and showed his development this episode. He knew what was at stake and used his leadership skills. Staying on task and knowing what’s important, being as fast as possible and not wasting time... all very great! Convincing Marion to let him lead her to face one of her worst fears! Fjord’s charming character traits really got to shine this episode. Also, him head-butting the magic thing (orb?) without casting the armour was hilarious (loved it).

Beau: doing awesome monk stuff as always (slow fall, evasion...) and being her best self. Although she had some bad luck, she kept trying again and again without giving up. That stunning strike was so vital in them escaping and Beau really got the chance to shine as one of their best fighters (like, admit it Beau, your empire sibling made the correct suggestion). She did pull on the book but hey, it could have been a very helpful book.

Yasha: when your common methods fail... KICK down the magically locked door! THAT WAS AWESOME. Yasha’s barbarian strength really helped them in there. Even being confused about the rooms she’d never been to, she was collected and helped the team as much as possible. Also, those rage moments with her holding the holy avenger pointing towards danger in anticipation were very nice. Yasha is becoming more and more amazing as a protector!

Veth: those critical hits in her fury against the enemy who harmed her son were epic. Her conversation with Yeza was really important and possibly a turning point for her character, and I’m glad they had that conversation. Her addressing calmly that she didn’t believe they could stop the city - that anyone could - but they had to try... She also tried so hard to eliminate the enemy but also get to her family. Also... yay for not using an AOE attack that would hurt ally within range? These recent episodes have got to be so hard on her, and I’m glad that Yeza was so supportive and that she got to have some nice family moments. 

Also just a big shout out to the NPCs as well: Luc for being himself (adorable), Yeza for being supportive and also communicating with Veth properly, thanking Caduceus. Marion for facing her fears in such a stressful situation and still being someone who offers wisdom and comfort to others and to her daughter. 

I just love all those characters, they have my whole heart.

More Headcanons I have for their happily ever afters

I think Fjord and Jester have a kid, maybe a couple of kids. At least one of them is adopted.

Marion quits her job and marries the gentleman who also lessens his work activities once he has some savings built up.

Marion and the Gentleman join Fjord and Jester on their ship sometimes to help out once they have kids.

Yasha grows a gorgeous garden in their backyard. It’s breathtaking. She gets another pack of the seeds she put on Zualas grave and she has a patch of them growing in her backyard as well.

There’s a small stage where she practices and performs on her bone harp sometimes. Theres a swinging bench where Beau likes to sit while she goes through her notes. They spend a lot of time out there together.

The stage doubles as a fighting ring, hidden by walls of trees and vines. Beau and Yasha have an occasional fight club. They do a lot of 2 vs 2 matches

Veth expands her summer camp and it becomes famous across the coast.

Caleb comes in from Rexentrum to teach magic.

If she has the time Beau comes in to teach cool monk shit and tell interested students about the cobalt soul. Yasha also comes and teaches barbarian shit.

Fjord and Jester dock their ship for a month and come help teach magic and mischief.

The Mighty Nein meets up at the end of the camp each year for a week long vacation and catch up session on Rumblecusp.
