I love this photo. The Ingenuity helicopter taking a photo of Perseverance (top left of the photo, you can see the tracks leading to it right to left).

Funniest part is it's not actually Curi in the music video, the "rover footage" in the video is an animation of FRICKING PERSEVERANCE
THEY GOT THE ROVER WRONG
I will never let them live this down

Haven't seen anything about Ingenuity on tumblr yet, so I guess I'll make a post about it

Ingenuity (sometimes called Ginny) was an companion craft to Perseverance, one of the rovers currently on Mars. As opposed to any of the past rovers, however, Ingenuity was a rotorcraft intended to fly above Mars' surface.
After landing on Mars in February of 2021 and completing its first flight on April 19th, 2021, Ingenuity became the first aircraft to fly on another planet. Its original goal was only 5 flights, but it well surpassed that number, logging 72 flights with over two hours of in-air time.
On January 18th, 2024, Ingenuity lost contact with Perseverance midway through a flight, and a few days later, NASA had confirmation that the rotors were damaged, leaving Ingenuity incapable of flight.
So long, Ingenuity. You did so much <3

y'all i just learned that the spot where Genny (Ingenuity, the little helicopter that went to Mars on Perseverance) had her last hard landing that snapped a rotor blade?
They named the spot Valinor Hills.
I fucking can't. I'm crying over the Mars robots again.

This is the project that used me up and burned me out, and the one that I'm most proud of having been a part of. I saw it through 10 years from powerpoint slides to samples placed on the surface of Mars. Perseverance by name and Perseverance by nature.
Evidence of ancient lake sediments at the base of Mars' Jezero Crater offer new hope for finding traces of life in samples collected by NASA's Perseverance rover.聽 Perseverance touched down on Feb. 18, 2021 inside the Red Planet's 28-mile-wide (45 kilometers) Jezero Crater, which is believed to have once hosted a large lake and river delta. The rover has been scouring the crater in search of signs of past life and collecting and caching dozens of samples along the way for a possible future return to Earth.聽

Today is the 4th anniversary of the Perseverance rover landing on Mars! Our executive director's real job is on this mission, which she has been involved with since 2016. A highlight of her time on the mission has been clean room testing for the Mastcam-Z instrument (pictured) where she sent commands to the cameras and could hear the filter wheel turning in real time. No one would ever hear that sound again when the cameras were attached to the rover and sent to Mars. After years of sending instrument commands to a similar camera on the Curiosity mission, she loved seeing and hearing the cameras work in person!
There was some "hurry up and wait" time in the clean room, and she was allowed to sanitize and bring in challenge coins for photos, and one that she picked was a Mara Jade coin (based on DS-62409 of Garrison Corellia) as that is her favorite character and costume, hence her Internet handle being "Martian Mara."
Legends Expo is a fan-run convention celebrating the books, comics, games, and other media that built the original Expanded Universe, and will be held on September 13 & 14, 2025 at the Burbank Marriott Convention Center.

A vein-filled rock is catching the eye of the science team of NASA's Perseverance rover. Nicknamed "Cheyava Falls" by the team, the arrowhead-shaped rock contains fascinating traits that may bear on the question of whether Mars was home to microscopic life in the distant past. Analysis by instruments aboard the rover indicates the rock possesses qualities that fit the definition of a possible indicator of ancient life. The rock exhibits chemical signatures and structures that could possibly have been formed by life billions of years ago when the area being explored by the rover contained running water. Other explanations for the observed features are being considered by the science team, and future research steps will be required to determine whether ancient life is a valid explanation.
