Whelp, the time has come: I’ve “finished” but I still wanna avoid the finale.

Ignoring the Thing and the aftermath of it—

(someone had a pacifier so everything turned out okay, nobody looked at Hawkeye sideways, and he went home to Peg and BJ right after the war, that’s the only version of canon I acknowledge. The alternative is too painful)

—what happened with everyone else? I wanna know, but I don’t think I could bear to risk watching it myself to find out even if I had timestamps.

No sweat! I'll put it all under a cut for convenience, and I'll keep mentions of Hawkeye's plot to the absolute bare minimum

BJ briefly visits Hawkeye in the hospital, and seems to want to say something but doesn't. Later we find out that he got his orders home, presumably went to the hospital to say goodbye, but didn't, and just left instead. Hawkeye gets upset by this but before things go on too long, BJ returns - the MASH got an influx of patients and sent out a request for a replacement doctor, since BJ was technically the closest he gets sent right back around. He throws a party for a group of orphans as a kind of replacement for Erin's birthday (bc he'd Almost made it home for it), but Hawkeye doesn't attend. At the end of the episode he succeeds in giving Hawkeye a proper goodbye by writing it out on the ground with rocks (verbally, I think he manages a 'see you later'?)

Father Mulcahy is involved in an explosion that causes him to lose the majority of his hearing. BJ is aware of this, but no one else is bc Mulcahy wants to keep it to himself bc he doesn't want the army to ship him home and cut off his work with the local orphans

Klinger winds up staying in Korea - he meets and gets married to Soon-Lee (a korean refugee) and decides to stay in country with her (as they look for the rest of her family, i think?)

Winchester meets a group of chinese soldiers who'd surrendered and winds up forming a relationship with them based on music. He teaches them how to play some classical english music on the instruments they came to the camp with. Later in episode, he finds out most of them have died during their transfer out of the camp. He also gets promised some kind of prestigious hospital position back in boston, but he's kind of pissy about it bc he found out margaret pulled some strings to help him get it, but he gets over it and they make up at the end of the ep

margaret says that she's been set up with a pretty nice administrative job in the army, which i'm pretty sure she decides to take. she also gives hawkeye a very heartfelt makeout sesh as a goodbye

i can't remember where potter winds up going BUT he donates his horse to the orphanage, so I'm assuming he heads home lol

I think that's everyone? if i've forgotten anything major anyone else who stops by to give this a look over can feel free to mention it in the replies (excluding hawk's plot, obviously lol); but hope this helps !

What is Horangi’s species like? Are they all kinda mean cause they’re cats or it that just him?

Horangi is a Haetae hybrid, which is an extremely rare monster that stays contained within their own family bloodline. In the Monster AU there's something like 12 families who have Haetae lineage (Horangi comes from a family of tiger variants) and that's all the Haetaes in the world.

They're not all...mean per se but I'd say most of Haetae hybrids are extremely devoted to what they see is a noble life-long cause to protecting their territory. They're very regimented families who live strict, regimented lifestyles and intentionally detach themselves from average humans and what they see as their vices like alcohol or gambling.

Horangi is an outcast from his family, and has been estranged for a long time. Years of growing up in this environment resulted in an especially explosive rebellious phase that backfired on him immensely. He's been disowned by his family, and would say he doesn't give a shit about them anymore.

Charles and Max work as professors in Monegasque and Dutch universities, studying history, and they create a magazine concerning the history of trivial things. Because one day, after Max got out for a drink with his collegues, he found that they were all focused on the history of the great men and great wars and great happenings, but nobody cared about the day-to-day things, the small things that actually shape our lives, so he starts this research. It's the beginning of the 20th century, and Charles is thrilled by this idea and so he writes about it too, alongside Max.

And they have a very heated argument concerning the history of jam making. Because Charles thinks it a capital thing! and Max is less interested in it, because jam sucks.

And they argue about so many silly things, like the history of glasses, and scented soap, and Max speaks about these arguments to his colleagues and they laugh at him bc he looks like a guy arguing with his wife.

And Max really thinks about it. He doesn’t have a wife, he never wished for one, but he'd like to spend his entire life with Charles, arguing about stupid things, so he writes to Charles, not really confessing his feelings, but the Monegasque can sense there is something bothering him about their relationship, and so he starts speaking about James I, King of Britain, gay unhinged king with his idiotic lovers running thw country. And Max is like shit! he got me! so he stops writing to Charles bc it's still the 1900s, being gay isn't really it...

But Charles keeps writing to him, even if Max doesn't answer and after a few letter Charles calls him names, like absolute prick, jam-hater monster, biblically accurate jerk, and a coward. And Max is so mad and he answers him back and Charles is like there he is, the baby <3 and so they keep on writing to each other, and Max realises that he's going to be in Monaco soon, and so he asks Charles to meet up for tea.

And Charles demands a proper date, with dinner and lounging at his apartment. Max nearly gets a stroke. And then they meet! And Max is so smitten and he fumbles his words constantly and Charles sits him down and tells him "Listen, if we are boyfriends you can't be this goofy..." And Max wakes up and they get together and they live together until ww2 starts and they get in the resistance and they fight nazis, and they are on different fronts, so they still send each other letters, and they meet again after the war ends and they retire as a happy older couple and write silly books about recipes for historically accurate jams!

Every version of Daniel Pierce totally has pictures of all his grandkids in his wallet—and those grandkids include Erin, and Danny, and Sara. And of course, any and all Punnihawk babies.

(He’s the most indulgent grandad; the older kids usually happen to be in the room when “someone has left five bucks lying around,” and the younger kids get another playmate because he gets dragged into every game—and everyone gets another partner in crime.)

actually, daniel having one of those wallets with a Shit Ton of photo sleeves in it and carrying around photos of All of the 4077th's kids (Trapper's, Radar's, Klinger's, Potter's grandkids, etc) is a very sweet concept (him adopting Hawkeye's found family as his own) and a very good way to help dissuade suspicion on Hawkeye's relationship, but 100% the pierce-hunnicutt kids get top ranking in the order - love the idea of them coming down to maine to visit and him teaching the kids to fish and stuff :]

Really interesting point about the shot composition in "Bombed", I never realized that they often do the opposite with the camera angles

it's a welcome shift in power dynamics that i think is significant for what we've seen of the trapper and margaret relationship up to this point. it's also important to note how shot composition is often very gendered, on mash and beyond. beyond the high vs. low angle shots, which happen a fair amount, one of the most egregious examples on the show happens in "germ warfare" when hawkeye is imagining dish naked, which features the period-typical soft glowy feminine lighting™️ on her in a spectacular display of objectification and creepiness

also particularly bad is the disembodied female body part shot, of which there are a few examples: take "there is nothing like a nurse" in which there's just a shot of margaret's mouth as she's complaining to henry

or the pilot, in which a shot begins zoomed in on dish's feet and legs before hawkeye swoops in despite her telling him to leave her alone

but then we get to "bombed," which inverts the gendered aspects of the high vs. low angle shots and shows margaret having the higher ground; even though she's in a moment of vulnerability, trapper is the one on the ground looking up at her (which can be read as a mix of admiration, mild teasing, and desire) and we get to see margaret's metaphorical walls come down

Well it's called funny casting. I love the cast of Mash and wouldn't trade any of them for the world, but they were all significantly older than their characters.

Hawkeye and B.J. were both meant to be 28

Alan Alda was 36 at the time the show started, Mike Farrell is three years younger than him.

Father Mulcahy is 31 but William Chistopher was in his 40s when the show began.

Then the real Korean War (which has still never been declared a war on the American end) only lasted three years, and the show went on for 11 years. This is part of how we got the time loop theory.

so...yes, war is war and Hell is Hell and of the two war will age you so much faster.
