mask girl went from being a stylish, character-driven thriller/drama to just... absolutely gutting me repeatedly. i loved it and it just filled me with many layers of melancholy but also anger at the absolute selfishness and brutality displayed by some of the characters. that girl—you can guess who i mean if you've finished it—deserves the fucking world. a few of them did. there are the villains who are people and then there are the villains who are concepts and culture. beauty standards are very much a villain here. when are you pretty enough to be loved? when are you pretty enough to be human?

I saw some people talking about how after watching Mask Girl they realized how bad South Korea was and i need y'all to understand that that is still racist + xenophobic.

Like yes, we live in an era that fetishizes South Korea rn, but that's no excuse to pretend everywhere else doesn't suck too or have similar problems just like the show.

And news flash, it's based on a fictional webcomic. The point is to dramatize things bc it's a drama, focusing on the cruelty is the point. Yes similar things do happen in SK along with everywhere else. That's why it can resonate so well.

Impossible beauty standards, bullying, misogyny, extortion sexual assault, among other things are very common INTERNATIONAL issues.

I'm emphasizing it bc I'm from the US where all of these things are massive issues along with hate crimes and hate against Asians. The pandemic made Southeast Asians or anyone who fit the stereotype an especially big target. So be careful how you critique a show and country in such a narrow way.

Just finished Mask Girl the Show. I hope this means someone will license the webcomic/manhwa to outside Korea. I wonder if anything was cut from the 130 chapters of material, bc it'd have to be to fit in 7 almost hour long eps right?

The real villains are that pervert guy and his mum. I felt bad for the mum initially, but in the end, I was praying for her to end up in prison. Until the end, she was unwilling to accept that her son was not a good man. Without her son, Momi wouldn't have ended up where she did. I hate the ending.

Funniest part of the show was them trying to convince us that OG Momi was ugly. Like what is the beauty standard in Korea if she’s considered ugly.

Also this is the 3rd show that I’ve watched where Nana’s character is queer coded. Well technically 2, it was canon in the good wife.
