[Note: this was apparently in my Drafts??? I thought I posted it weeks ago, but no??? Apparently not???]
@maski1 replied to your post “THAT'S LOSER TALK!”:
I like the fact that the teachers made such a game tho. They were all so focused on victory that they forgot the most important thing
Yeah, that was definitely the point that the teachers were trying to make, and it undercuts a different recurring element that we've been seeing this whole time: that the students of Cipher Academy are geniuses
Think back to when we learned that each class had been given a password for Glasses Weapons to access Class M. Iroha was impressed that groups of students, not professional codebreakers with years of experience, were able to crack the codes
Along with pretty much everything else we've seen from anyone other than Iroha himself, the students are portrayed as up-and-coming unprecedented talents, like Anonymity being able to solve ten puzzles on sight while also hiding the fact that she was even looking at them
These kids are incredibly gifted at what they do, to the point that it feels like you could just throw them into a real-world scenario and they'd be fine. Even Kogoe suggests doing just that with Iroha pretty early on, and he's easily the worst codebreaker in the series at the moment (not to diminish how good he is, he's just not supposed to be as good as everyone else)
But the thing is, everything we've seen so far has been simulated. None of it has required real-world experience, and none of it has put anyone at any real risk
"How did you guys win - sorry, I mean, how are you not dead?"
Because this isn't a combat scenario. This isn't a warzone. It's a simulation. It's training. It's a game. No matter how seriously you're meant to take it, the truth of the matter is that these are, in the grand scheme of how this world is set up to work, children's games
We've never seen the adults solving puzzles or breaking codes, but do you think that these professionals wouldn't be able to keep up with the likes of Anonymity or Yugata? Even if they're particularly rare talents, do you think they'd be able to outsolve Nikueda at their current level?
The teachers know that for however talented their students are, they're still just children, amateurs at worst and rookies at best. This is why they designed the game to have ambiguous rules, to test the students' abilities to read between the lines, and while most of them figured out that the rules of engagement were extremely flexible, only Iroha was able to truly figure out what the goal was, proving that even the weakest individual soldier can pull out ahead of the strongest

Hello! I love your blog! Thanks for taking time to gather so much information on FMA! I saw on a wikia that it was mention somewhere Mustang tends to overprotect his queen and rush into action when it is in danger when he plays chess. Do you know where this fact comes from?
Never heard of it in my life. If someone happens to have a source on that, lmk, but... Gonna be totally honest, sounds kind of like a Royai fan completely misinterpreting their character dynamic extrapolating a bit too much.

Nine or so people you want to get to know better!
@thestuffedalligator tagged me in a reblog chain, but it was much too long and lagging my computer, so I'm making a separate post
Last song: The Death of Peace of Mind by Bad Omens. One of many songs on my Undead Unluck playlist, it makes me think a lot about the sorts of dangers that Andy, Fuuko and the rest of the cast face specifically for the sake of their loved ones
Currently watching: Just finished watching the Netflix One Piece, and I really liked it! I did realize that they cut down on a lot of the comedy and made it more of a light drama, but all in all I had a good time and I think it's a good way to get new people into the series while giving fans a nice way to reminisce about the older stories or get a new perspective on them
Currently reading: Between reading manga right now. Strongly debating between Oshi no Ko and Dorohedoro next, but I get the feeling something else is going to swoop in in the meantime. The most recent big thing I've read was Dungeon Meshi, though I've dabbled in smaller things since
Current obsession: One Step From Eden; a Deck-Building Zoner in the same vein as Megaman Battle Network but as a Procedural rather than an RPG, I've only managed one successful run so far after doing some research on good beginner strategies. I'll probably look into more effective strategies for the other characters going forward so I can get a handle on their playstyles and hopefully reach a point where I can be satisfied that I "finished" playing it
Tagging @wickedsick, @buhbuhlmao, @thatonearo, @random-senpai, @sean-gaffney, @nilmerg-ecid, @giltheweebzard, @greengargouille, @maski1

princesstokyomoon replied to your post ... ... ... can we see the list?
kovu was the first crush baby me ever acknowledged i had, so seeing simba on this list is very validating lol
[high fives] Disney made those lions way too hot for their own good. Kovu would probably be on my list if I had watched the second Lion King movie more recently. It’s been a while since I’ve seen it, but I remember being gripped by him when I was younger. So if he magically appears on that list later...... a rewatch happened.
writingstellar replied to your post ... ... ... can we see the list?
-is queer -has a type -that type involves dark hair and eyes ...my dude do you also like them kinda damaged? Because I think we have the same taste lmao
Bruh. Bruh. I wasn’t going to admit it in the tags, but TOTALLY. When they’re damaged is when my heart melts. I relate to their struggles and issues, I yearn to care for them, I feel for them, I love them. [high five on the same taste]
maski1 replied to your post ... ... ... can we see the list?
"Elizabeth Hawkeye" ? I think it was stated her name really is "Riza" ? When I watched ATLA when I was little I didn't like Zuko. Now he's my favorite character XD Gotta watch The Dragon Prince but before, I have to watch TLoK (and before that, read the chapters that were never adaptated). I'm curious, why Aladdin? Linguini is underrated
I started replying to you in the comments of the original post, but you always have such fun conversations, so I had to hop onto here and expand!
1. Regarding how I present the names on my list, I try to give a character’s full name, so long as there is strong evidence-based canon that gives or implies their name. In a few rare cases, like Elizabeth Hawkeye, there are fans who would dispute me on this, but I can give a very good account based deeply in canon for why I have the name listed as it is. If people want to agree or disagree with me at the end of the day, I don’t mind either way.
Regarding Riza... there are two types of scenarios she is called “Elizabeth” in Arakawa’s writing. One scenario is when everyone in Team Mustang is given code names. I imagine zero fans care about that as evidence. Havoc’s code name is Jacqueline, and that obviously isn’t his real name. Riza being called “Elizabeth” on the phone when Roy is disguising his operations by fake flirting doesn’t count for proof by itself. But the other instance is Roy calling her “Elizabeth” to Madame Christmas. I think most fans read that as Roy simply extending the code name for anonymity reasons. However, given Madame Christmas knows a ton about Roy’s emotional investment in Riza, and I’ve encountered some..... translational difficulties that the official English versions have with names... I think the latter’s a good cue.
Riza in older English translations and older merchandise was legitimately named “Liza,” and Liza is a common nickname for Elizabeth (especially for the time period Fullmetal Alchemist is roughly evoking). I talk about the translation weirdness here in much better depth. As you may know yourself, given your own language background, this would not be the first time the English translators made stupid mistakes with FMA names. Viz Media initially gave Xerxes the clusterfuck spelling ‘Cselkcess’ before they realized what the word was supposed to be. Ling Yao’s name has danced between Ling and Lin, despite Arakawa herself putting the Romanized spelling of his name in some drawn panels. I have seen Ranfun, Ranfan, and Lan Fan all within official FMA merchandise. Viz Media couldn’t even get a kid’s name “Kyle” down right in their translations... originally he was called “Khayal,” because at that point in time, they didn’t have a good grasp of the world (and ergo name base) that Arakawa was drawing from. Jean Havoc’s name should have been given a French pronunciation rather than sounding like ‘Gene,’ and if you wanted to Anglicize his name one step further, you could’ve named him John Havoc more accurately than what we got in the anime dubs.
With all that said and done, a character named Liza who is sometimes referred to as “Elizabeth” seems to me a logical enough indication she would have been born as “Elizabeth Hawkeye.” In any other circumstance, if I met someone who was called Liza but at one point got called “Elizabeth” by people who knew her in her past, I would conclude she was named Elizabeth. So yeah. Some people may disagree with my logic, but that’s the short of why I have it. XD
If other people are curious: another character whose name might disputed on my list is Rufus from Deponia. There’s some information in the obscure Deponia roleplaying book that says his father used to be named Landgull. Rufus was offended when his father changed his name from Seagull to Landgull to distance himself from Rufus (ergo, it wasn’t a first name change, which would’ve been irrelevant to disowning your blood relation to someone); Captain Seagull was always referred to by a title which usually goes with a last name; and ergo it’s likely Rufus could’ve grown up as Rufus Landgull. Even though the games never ever ever actually call him that.
2. NOW GOING ONTO THE ZUKO THING. Dude, I feel you. When I watched Season 1 of ATLA, I hated Zuko. By Season 3, I loved him and he was my favorite character. They did a magnificent job not just creating the character and giving him an arc, but allowing his personality to be increasingly revealed to us as audience members.
3. Why Aladdin? As a kid, I was obsessed with Aladdin. Now that I’m older, I still think his cheeky, adventurous, charming, but genuine yearning spirit are appealing. And he has sUCH pReTTy eYeSSS!!! So yeah.
4. Linguini is VERY underrated. What a dear.

Sorry to bother you again. I saw Hawkeye's precise year of birth was mentioned in FMA Complete Book: Side Story (or Book in Figure Blue maybe?) but I remember Arakawa just stated she was in her mid to late twenties
Hmm, I just checked real quick and didn’t see anything mentioning her age. I think it’s safe to say she’s around Roy’s age, though, so I’d say late 20s.

Okay, let's go for the best friend thing of the ask. (un jour je trouverai comment utiliser ces smileys dans un ask)
Je te conseille la technique du copier-coller, testée et approuvée :P
🏫: Which character would be your best friend?
Yukimura-sensei, but unfortunately I failed my Necromancy studies.
...More seriously, if the implicit behind the question is, “If your personality and tastes were transfered to a 14yo Japanese girl transfered to 3-E among with the main cast”... then the answer would be pretty different whether we talk about how I was at 14 or my current self! (And without the awareness of being actually 24 because else my choices would be either Korosensei or Irina, as we all know Karasuma have no friend)
For example, my mindset at 14 was way more pessimistic, and I was more dry and rude (most of the time unintentionally), so I would probably feel more at ease with someone like Hazama (especially since I liked a lot of edgy stories at the time), but as I am now, I might find it harder to be around someone like her?
Or on the opposite, I always been a big enthusiast of eating and cooking, so I would probably stay a lot around someone like Hara... But 14 years old me still was in a phase of being angry at sexism and gender expectations, without really understanding that it’s not bad for specific individuals to want to be an housewife or such things, so I probably would be annoyed a lot, too
Hmmm, if I have to stop at one person, one best friend... It would probably be Fuwa for 14 year old me, as a shonen enthusiast who had not yet been annoyed by clichés and fanservice, and as I am myself often lost in my own little world (plus, Fuwa is part of the Sweet Alliance)
And for current me, probably Kurahashi, as she’s a cheerful girl who’s talented with small talk and loves animals and bugs. (...And is also part of the sweet alliance)

I hate when people smile even if they're not okay. It's so sad and it hurts to see they don't want to bother you with their problems. Friends and family are here for that too. "I don't like to see you sad" is sometimes something ridiculous to say. Who does like to see their friend crying? You have the right to cry when you're sad! Keeping it inside is hurting yourself and your friends! 🙁
Aw I know right? Smiling and trying to hide your real state of mind builds also a wall between people. And that’s exactly what Syaoran and Sakura are doing, for different reasons.Syaoran can’t talk for now about what he’s doing, and this is eating him alive. His pain stems from not being able to tell, and from what he’s done.Sakura, on the other hand, is doing it because of her personality. Everyone is always so preoccupied in keeping her smiling, so much that it becomes really hard to detect when behind her smile there’s something else. But as you said, there isn’t any need to feel shame in aknowledging you’re feeling sad, and even crying if you need to.
I’m sure they’ll work this situation out, and Sakura already started to walk in that direction, both in episode 21 and episode 22. In episode 21 Sakura opened her heart to Syaoran, silently asking him for help because she felt confused. And now in episode 22 she said the words I needed to hear her say: “it’s not always funny things. Even if I’ll have to face painful things, everyone is here for me”.
Noticed how lately Sakura starts making these statements out of the blue? She’s thinking a lot lately. She’s growing up, and she’s learning to deal with her own fears. Aknowledging that her situation might actually turn very bitter and painful is the right step to prepare her to what might come later. In this sense, I appreciated they made her look at the pink bear, thinking “I’m not alone”. Sakura knows in her heart that, even if he’s currently shady and he’s holding up a thin wall between them, Syaoran would never leave her alone. Her trust in him is still untouched, and this is going to be crucial when “that time” comes.

Hello there! When Syaoran used this "Windy magic" I was like "Seriously, you couldn't have made it more obvious!". I love the idea Sakura Cards help Syaoran to protect Sakura. I would have liked they choosed to disappear to protect her from Kaito though. Can't wait to see Wei and Syaoran's sisters (and maybe his mother too) next week! I think Syaoran sees him a bit like a sort of "substitue father" and Wei seems to treat him like his son as well.
Hahah ikr?? I wonder how it’s possible for Sakura (or kero) to not noticed her magic is being used 🤔. Also, I wonder if Syaoran had to actually talk to them, they must trust Syaoran a lot 😄
Aww yeah! I’m so excited for next week’s episode! Wei and Syaoran’s sisters appear in the VA list of ep.19, but Yelan doesn’t :/ I wonder if they’re keeping her for the end, which would be awesome haha. And yeah, Wei is definitely a father figure for Syaoran, I’m sure he’ll have such a gentle smile while talking to him on the phone

jayalaw replied to your post: It’s almost been one year since I was walking...
Goodness has it been a year? Time flies!
I know, right??? I can’t believe it’s been nearly a full year already. At the same time, time’s been weird and it also feels like it’s been my entire life, too. XD
maski1 replied to your post: It’s almost been one year since I was walking...
"Inadvertently dragged my father into bluegrass music" Wasn't your father against this kind of music? (Sorry, I have the memory of a goldfish) In any case, congratulations! Another one who joined the dark side ahahah
Your memory has to be at least as good as my memory, then, haha! Sometimes I feel like I have the mental acuity of a tree stump. Heck, tree stumps might be better than me...
Yeah, that’s right. You remember right! Dad would trash talk country music, but I could tell that under his talk, he had respect for the technical skill of bluegrass. Me becoming interested in banjo allowed Dad to discard his outer dislike of the music and embrace the fact he did find interest in what was being played. XD
And now he’s doing his fare share of CHOOSING to look up bluegrass music and banjo music on his own time! He’ll often message me with youtube videos he’s found, or start a conversation about a music artist he found. It’s clear that Mom and Dad are watching these things on their own time. Yesterday he asked me about Molly Tuttle, which was pretty exciting because I’ve learned about her recently and been impressed with her too.
And Dad keeps repeatedly talking about bluegrass guitar technique... my dad’s a guitar player but he’s never done anything like crosspicking. But now he’s investigating it in depth. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear him start to crosspick in the next few years. He wants to play with his kid (just as much as I want to play with him) and I think the new genre of music and new guitar style is energizing to him, too.
Mom’s always disliked country music more, but she has sat down with Dad when he’s watched bluegrass and country music livestreams. So she’s accepting it in stride as part of life now. And I’ll take victory where I find it... one time several months ago when I was at their house, I was listening to Rocky Top by the Osborne Brothers, and she started singing along with that one. Never thought I’d see the day that Mom would sing along with any type of country song.
Now I just have to work on my sister...... ;)
