Looted Rare Coin From Last Hasmonean king Seized in Israel
IAA says coins minted under Antigonus Mattathias II rarest from period; dozens of other ancient coins from Roman to Muslim periods recovered in search of East Jerusalem home.
Police recovered dozens of ancient coins that were allegedly illegally excavated — among them a rare coin from the time of the last Hasmonean king of Judea over 2,000 years ago — during a search in East Jerusalem overnight, the Israel Antiquities Authority said Wednesday.
The currency was recovered from the suspect’s home in the Silwan neighborhood and includes bronze coins ranging from the Roman period until the Muslim period. The IAA said in a statement that coins from the reign of Antigonus Mattathias II (40 BCE – 37 BCE) are the rarest finds among those minted from the Hasmonean period.
Police questioned a man in his 30s, suspected of robbing the artifacts — likely by searching for them with a metal detector around Jerusalem — illegal possession of artifacts, and attempting to sell the items.
IAA Director Eli Escusido said that finding the coins at their original site would have been more useful to their study.
“The removal of the coin from its archaeological site harms the ability to understand our historical puzzle,” he said.
Gabriela Bichovsky, a coin expert at the IAA, said a cornucopia is displayed on the coin, with a Hebrew inscription reading, “Mattia Kohen Gadol,” a reference to the Hasmonean king as a member of the Jewish priestly class. The opposite side of the coin was minted with a Greek inscription surrounded by a wreath, she said.
Tumblr media
“Mattathias minted bronze coins in three denominations: large, medium, and small. The coin that was recovered is of the medium denomination and is rarer than the large, on which a pair of cornucopias appear instead of one,” Bichovsky added.
She further explained that the methods used were unique to Mattathias.
Before being stamped with their designs, “the tokens were first cast in a double limestone mold, creating a thickening coin that looks as if two were stuck together,” she stated.
“It’s very difficult to find currency from Antigonos where you can see the models in their entirety on the faces of the coin. Among the currencies of the Hasmonean period, the coins of Antigonus Mattathias II are the rarest.”

Crows Name Meanings because why not?
🐦‍⬛ Kaz:
Meaning: Destroyer of peace; One who declares peace; Child of peace or harmony
Kaz is an incredibly dynamic name popular for boys and has Slavic origins.
Kaz comes from the name Cassius, which means “hollow”, and was famously worn by one of the conspirators against Julius Caesar. This may be why it has gained the meaning “destroyer of peace.”
However, Kaz has an endearing connotation, too! In Japanese, Kaz comes from Kazuko, which means “harmony” and “child of peace.” This powerful title will find a home in a soul who is unafraid of forging their own, unique path.
Baby Kaz will undoubtedly stay true to themselves as they journey through life, carrying a remarkable presence everywhere they go.
🌺 Inej:
Meaning: Faithful, The faithful one
Inej is a girl's name of Spanish origin.
Meaning "faithful" or "the faithful one", this name is for the parent intending to raise baby in a life of faith.
🎲 Jesper:
Meaning: King of the treasure; Treasurer
Jesper is a masculine name of Danish, Dutch, and Persian origin.
A variant of the Persian name Jasper, this name translates to “King of the treasure” or “treasurer.” Wealth comes in many forms, whether it’s gold, knowledge, or moments with your loved ones.
Of course, baby is going to be a priceless new addition to your family. If you want to always remind baby how invaluable they are, the name Jesper makes for a bountiful choice.
🎼 Wylan:
Meaning: Wayside land; Crafting one; Brave in battle
Wylan offers a dapper appellation steeped in cool kid vibes. A form of Waylan and Waylon, masculine Wylan is a topographical name meaning “wayside land.” Wylan’s origins don’t stop there, as the name also has Germanic and Old Norse roots, where it derives from Wayland.
Wylan adopts the meaning “crafting one” from Wayland the Smith, a mythological master blacksmith who escaped the king’s custody by flying away with a winged cloak he crafted. He is mentioned in several Germanic and Old Norse poems, including the Old English classics, Waldere and Beowulf.
Wayland may also mean “brave in battle,” equipping baby with a warrior-worthy title. Not only is Wylan effortlessly chill for the cool-as-a-cucumbers, this handsome title comes steeped in ancient lore and ingenuity.
🫀Nina:
Meaning: Little girl
Nina is a girl’s name with various possible   origins, arguably the most well-known being Spanish.
Aptly meaning “little girl,” this simple title never seems to go out of style.
Sharing her name with the Incan goddess of fire, Nina can be inspired to let her flame burn bright. Also connected to a Babylonian goddess, there is no shortage of heavenly influences for this little girl.
🐺 Matthias:
Meaning: Gift of God; Bear
Matthias is a refreshing twist to the ancient masculine name Mathew sure to give baby a distinctive edge.
Emerging from the Hebrew Matityahu, meaning "gift of God," Matthias bears this definition with all the swagger of a rock star.
As much as Matthias seems to push against tradition, its very sound directly links it with the Ancient Greek translation of Matityahu, Mattathias, which pre-dates even Mathew.
Touring overseas to Celtic shores, Matthias finds an intriguing kinship with the Irish mathúin, which means "bear." A relic with a rugged appeal, as names go.
Matthias serves up stage presence before baby has even taken their first steps.
Do with this what you will

Count Olaf's best disguise?
Count Olaf had a large variety of disguises which came with varying degrees of success, as we all know. Which was the funniest, or the most unhinged, we could debate all day. But. I think there is a clear winner for which is the most effective, and it's not what you'd expect. Here's the lyrics to Smile! No One Cares How You Feel, by the Gothic Archies.
smile: no one cares how you feel be vicious, vain, and vile everything's yours to steal if you just smile have you no dignity? have you no sense of style? you'll never be pretty until you smile
smile: no one cares how you feel there's a world to be got you can make this world kneel if you'll just smile
ALWAYS THE BEST DISGUISE A LICENSE TO DEFILE everyone you despise will die so smile
Now, Count Olaf was vile before he ever put on an official disguise. But no one seemed to notice, did they. Even when the children clearly bore the marks of abuse. In a way, he was wearing a disguise the whole time. Everyone else was either genuinely blind to it, or willfully ignorant. It seemed he had the most success in the beginning, when he was closest to achieving his goal. When he didn't wear a costume at all. Arguably, fake kindness and a smile, were the real fuel behind each of his disguises anyway. We as the reader/viewer, see things objectively. We see the menace behind his "amiability" the manipulation behind his "compliments" and the threat behind his smile. But the characters don't. For the sake of metaphor, for the absurdist comedy, etc. But speaking in context, judging by the reaction of all these characters, Olaf appears to them as friendly and downright charismatic. And that is his best disguise, because time after time, people see his smile and let down their guard. For example, Dr. Mattathias Medicalschool would never have been able to exist if Babs hadn't fallen for that smile. While on the surface it may seem ridiculous amid all the comedy and exaggeration, the truth is that Olaf gets his way because he makes people WANT to do what he says. It is this power of manipulation that keeps his disguises intact and not the ridiculous boots and bald caps etc. And it's just so perfect how the song also represents Olaf's beliefs about himself and the world. "No one cares how he feels but he can still make the world kneel."
For the record though...Stephano is my favorite disguise.

“They’ve already anesthetized the bratty orphan,” Esmé said, “so you ladies merely need to go to her room and bring her to the operating theater. I’m going to try to find that sniveling bookworm and that stupid baby with the oversized teeth. Mattathias says I get to choose which one to keep alive in order to force Mr. Poe to give us the fortune, and which one I get to rip to shreds.”
“Good,” Klaus said, trying to sound fierce and villainous. “I’m so tired of chasing those kids around.”
“Me, too,” Esmé said, and the enormous assistant nodded in agreement.
-- the hostile hospital
esme has been with olaf and crew to chase after the orphans only 1 book at this point (the vile village while she disguises herself as officer luciana). the ersatz elevator doesn't really count because she's just at her home. she worked with olaf for length of one book and he failed his goals that time and she's already tired. honestly understandable

Luke 3
Over the 24 days leading up to Christmas, I'm going to be posting a chapter of Luke every day. I encourage you to read through Luke's gospel and reflect on Jesus's time here on earth. Perhaps you'll find something new.
Masterlist
Luke 3 (NIV)
John the Baptist Prepares the Way
3 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— 2 during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. 3 He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:
“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.
5 Every valley shall be filled in,
every mountain and hill made low.
The crooked roads shall become straight,
the rough ways smooth.
6 And all people will see God’s salvation.’"
7 John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 9 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”
10 “What should we do then?” the crowd asked.
11 John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”
12 Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”
13 “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,” he told them.
14 Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”
He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely—be content with your pay.”
15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah. 16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” 18 And with many other words John exhorted the people and proclaimed the good news to them.
19 But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of his marriage to Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the other evil things he had done, 20 Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.
The Baptism and Genealogy of Jesus
21 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
23 Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry. He was the son, so it was thought, of Joseph,
the son of Heli, 24 the son of Matthat,
the son of Levi, the son of Melki,
the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph,
25 the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos,
the son of Nahum, the son of Esli,
the son of Naggai, 26 the son of Maath,
the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein,
the son of Josek, the son of Joda,
27 the son of Joanan, the son of Rhesa,
the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel,
the son of Neri, 28 the son of Melki,
the son of Addi, the son of Cosam,
the son of Elmadam, the son of Er,
29 the son of Joshua, the son of Eliezer,
the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat,
the son of Levi, 30 the son of Simeon,
the son of Judah, the son of Joseph,
the son of Jonam, the son of Eliakim,
31 the son of Melea, the son of Menna,
the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan,
the son of David, 32 the son of Jesse,
the son of Obed, the son of Boaz,
the son of Salmon, the son of Nahshon,
33 the son of Amminadab, the son of Ram,
the son of Hezron, the son of Perez,
the son of Judah, 34 the son of Jacob,
the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham,
the son of Terah, the son of Nahor,
35 the son of Serug, the son of Reu,
the son of Peleg, the son of Eber,
the son of Shelah, 36 the son of Cainan,
the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem,
the son of Noah, the son of Lamech,
37 the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch,
the son of Jared, the son of Mahalalel,
the son of Kenan, 38 the son of Enosh,
the son of Seth, the son of Adam,
the son of God. "
FOOTNOTE: Though it can be boring to read, Jesus's genealogy was important to include in the gospels. At the time it was written, it was a well-known fact amongst the Jews that the Messiah would be a descendent of David. Because of this, the writers used Jesus's genealogy as proof that he is the Messiah.

The New York Times published a 5,000-word article asserting that Donald Trump is a unique threat to democracy because a second term Trump Department of Justice could potentially prosecute members of the Democrat Party.
Authors Emily Bazelon and Mattathias Schwartz make this argument not only after a first Trump term with zero political prosecutions by Trump appointees but after a shocking and unprecedented nationwide lawfare campaign by Democrats against Trump and other Republicans.
The Times headline is “Why Legal Experts Are Worried About a Second Trump Presidency.” The subhed added, “In a survey of 50 members of the D.C. legal establishment, many warn that Trump could follow through on his threats to prosecute his political adversaries.” The term “gaslighting” has gained popularity in recent years, a reference to the 1944 movie “Gaslight” about a husband who manipulates his wife into thinking she is insane. Even in a sea of media manipulation, there is perhaps no better example of gaslighting than this piece.
The article begins with an unsubstantiated claim that Trump seeks to engage in political prosecutions. The only quote offered in support of this claim is Trump saying people who violate federal election laws will be prosecuted and sentenced. They inaccurately characterize this as “Donald Trump could not be clearer about his plans to use the Justice Department to seek revenge against his enemies.”

Coin Hoard Belonging to Second King of the Hasmonean Dynasty Found in Israel
Dr. Shay Bar, Dr. Yoav Farhi and Dr. Mechael Osband, who led the excavation, discovered the 80/79 BCE-style coins on Friday.
Researchers unearthed 160 coins belonging to the second king of the Hasmonean dynasty from a Hanukkah-era excavation, the University of Haifa’s Zinman Institute of Archaeology announced on Monday.
Dr. Shay Bar, Dr. Yoav Farhi and Dr. Mechael Osband, who led the excavation, discovered the 80/79 BCE-style coins on Friday.
“We believe that the coins were discovered at a way station, which we didn’t know about until this excavation,” Bar added. “The site included a purification mikveh, a pool and other buildings and was located along the Tirzah River Valley on the main road that leads to the Sartaba fortress which was built by King Jannaeus.”

A piece of Israel's history
The Hasmonean King Alexander Jannaeus—a descendant of Jewish royalty whose Hebrew name was Jonathan—ruled over the kingdom of Judea from 103 to 76 BCE, the statement said. King Jannaeus was the great nephew of Judah Maccabee and the great-grandson of Mattathias, who led the 167 BCE revolt against Antiochus’ armies. Among the results of that revolt, the institute explained, is the cleansing of the Temple that is now celebrated during Hanukkah.
Not many coins belonging to Jannaeus have been discovered, the statement said, making this “extremely rare” and one of the largest coin finds in Israel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Farhi, a curator at the Israel Eretz Israel Museum, said on one side, each coin has an eight-pointed star and an Aramaic inscription reading, “King Alexander, Year 25.” The other side displays an anchor and a Greek inscription reading, “[Coin of] King Alexander.”
The Hasmonean kingdom—named after Hasmon, a distant ancestor of the Maccabees—lost its independence to the Romans in 63 BCE, and Roman governors later ruled directly over Judea. In 37 BCE, the Hasmoneans fell to Herod the Great, a Roman of Edomite descent, and the Herodian dynasty began.

Quote Debunk 2 - Across The Snicket-Verse: "You would have our fortune if it weren't for Esmé - if it weren't for [her], you'd be rich and we'd be dead."
Tumblr media
What would've happened if Esmé DID get her hands on the Vessel For Disaccharides (during ASOUE)?
Esmé's obsession/addiction to the Sugar Bowl has been a source of great entertainment during the Netflix series, and, as the Baudelaires said in The Penultimate Peril [to Count Olaf]:
"You would have our fortune if it weren't for Esmé - if it weren't for [Esmé], you'd be rich and we'd be dead."
But what does this mean?
Well, one thing's for sure - she would've DEFINITELY stopped trying to capture the Baudelaires; all she wants is her precious Sugar Bowl, as she tells Olaf in The Vile Village:
O: "The point is, I'm able to give my ladylove the best gift in the world: an enormous fortune. "
E: "I already have that. What I don't have is the most important part of a tea set."
O: "The Teapot?"
E: "The Sugar Bowl!"
Along with this quote, from the same episode:
E: "Let them burn - orphans are out. And sugar bowls are in..."
This also means that her break-up with Olaf would've probably come earlier in the series - most likely during/after The Hostile Hospital.
But what would've happened?
Esmé would've searched tirelessly but selfishly for her powerful trinket.
She would've found it.
She then would've argued with Olaf: Esmé's point being they've got the sugar bowl, they can go; Olaf's point being he wants to stay to catch the Baudelaires.
They break up, Esmé taking the Sugar Bowl with her.
A more-angry-than-usual Olaf hunts the Baudelaires with murderous force and sheer heartlessness, finds them and [more or less] the events of The Slippery Slope are brought forward to The Hostile Hospital - Sunny is captured, and Violet and Klaus are killed (albeit surgically, with Olaf still posing as Dr Mattathias Medical-School).
Or, alternatively to 5. :
Olaf captures Violet instead of Sunny, as he won't have to wait as long to get his hands on the Baudelaire fortune. We know Olaf is an impatient person, as he explicitly says to Olivia in The Carnivorous Carnival:
"I'm tired of patience."
But this is just a possibility...

The NY Times
By Mattathias Schwartz
Feb. 10, 2025
A federal judge on Monday said the White House has defied his order to release billions of dollars in federal grants, marking the first time a judge has expressly declared that the Trump White House was disobeying a judicial mandate.
The ruling by Judge John J. McConnell Jr. in Rhode Island federal court ordered Trump administration officials to comply with what he called “the plain text” of an edict he issued on Jan. 29.
That order, he wrote, was “clear and unambiguous, and there are no impediments to the Defendants’ compliance with” it.
Judge McConnell’s ruling marked a step toward what could quickly evolve into a high-stakes showdown between the executive and judicial branches, a day after a social media post by Vice President JD Vance claimed that “judges aren’t allowed to control the executive’s legitimate power,” elevating the chance that the White House could provoke a constitutional crisis.
“It’s very rare for a president not to comply with an order,” said Victoria Nourse, a professor at Georgetown University Law Center who served during the Obama and Biden administrations. “This is part of a pattern where President Trump appears to be asserting authority that he doesn’t have.”
But for some of President Trump’s allies, it is the judges ruling against Mr. Trump who are out of bounds.
“Activist judges must stop illegally meddling with the President’s Article II powers,” wrote Mike Davis, who heads the Article III Project, a conservative advocacy group.
Already, more than 40 lawsuits have been filed against the Trump administration challenging Mr. Trump’s brazen moves, which have included revoking birthright citizenship and giving Elon Musk’s teams access to sensitive Treasury Department payment systems. Judges have already ruled that many of these executive actions may violate existing statutes.
Judge McConnell previously ordered the White House to unfreeze federal funds locked up by a memo from the White House Office of Management and Budget that demanded that billions of dollars in federal grants be held back until they were determined to comply with President Trump’s priorities, including with ideological litmus tests.
On Friday, 22 Democratic attorneys general went to Judge McConnell to accuse the White House of failing to comply with his earlier order. The Justice Department responded in a filing on Sunday that money for clean energy projects and transportation infrastructure, allocated to states by the Inflation Reduction Act and the bipartisan infrastructure bill, was exempt from the initial order because it had been paused under a different memo than the one that prompted the lawsuit.
Judge McConnell’s ruling on Monday explicitly rejected that argument.
The judge granted the attorneys generals’ request for a “motion for enforcement” — essentially a nudge. It did not find that the Trump administration was in contempt of court or specify any penalties for failing to comply.
However, the judge was straightforward in his finding that an initial temporary restraining order that he issued Jan. 29 was not being followed.
“These pauses in funding violate the plain text of the T.R.O.,” Judge McConnell wrote. That earlier ruling ordered the administration not to “pause, freeze, impede, block, cancel, or terminate” money that had already been allocated by Congress to the states to pay for Medicaid, school lunches, low-income housing subsidies and other essential services.
It was still not clear how the White House would respond. Harrison Fields, a White House spokesman, suggested the president would ultimately prevail in court.
“Each executive order will hold up in court because every action of the Trump-Vance administration is completely lawful,” he said. “Any legal challenge against it is nothing more than an attempt to undermine the will of the American people.”
But Judge McConnell made clear that White House officials were obligated to comply regardless of how they thought the case might conclude. In his ruling on Monday, the judge quoted an opinion from a previous case noting that “persons who make private determinations of the law and refuse to obey an order generally risk criminal contempt even if the order is ultimately ruled incorrect.”
The showdown is part of a broader effort by Mr. Trump’s opponents to get congressionally approved funding flowing again. Another order requiring that the disputed funds be released was issued last Monday by Judge Loren AliKhan of the District of Columbia. That case was filed by a coalition of nonprofits represented by Democracy Forward.
Skye Perryman, Democracy Forward’s chief executive, said that if there were to be a standoff between the executive and judicial branches, she hoped that the legislative branch would step in.
“That is really a call to action for Congress,” she said. “The judicial branch is not going to be able to stop this unlawful and extreme use of executive power on its own.”
