Alongside the 199 year anniversary of the death of Percy Shelley, this week also see the birth of other notable instances of 18th and 19th century Gothic horror 9th July 1764, birth of English author and pioneer of the Gothic Novel Ann Radcliffe. Best known for the work ‘The Mysteries of Udolpho’ published in 1794, and cited as the archetypal Gothic Novel. Radcliffe’s technique of matching supernatural and psychological terror, alongside vivid descriptions of travelling within gothic landscapes, propelled the Gothic novel into respectability in the 1790s. 9th July 1775, birth of English novelist and dramatist Matthew Gregory Lewis, known as M.G. Lewis, and often referred to as "Monk" Lewis, due to the success of his gothic novel, ‘The Monk: A Romance’ published in 1796. The scandal and controversy of the novel's themes of perceived blasphemy, violence, immorality and supernaturalism; resulted in harsh critiques of Lewis being a ‘reckless defiler of the public mind’, and devoting the ‘fruits of his mind to the propagation of evil’. Despite these criticisms the novel was very highly successful, absorbed by an 18th century reading public eager to be terrified and scandalized by the new gothic fictional form. 10th July 1792, birth of Captain Frederick Marryat; British Royal Navy officer, friend of Charles Dickens and author of the gothic novel ‘ The Phantom Ship’. Marryat is also credited as an early pioneer of the sea story. The Phantom Ship tells the story of the legend of the ghost ship the Flying Dutchman, and its Captain doomed to sail for eternity, and the quest of the Captain’s son who pursues his father in order to save his soul, (continued in the comments) #gothicliterature #gothicliteratureart #gothicstyle #gothicbooks #gothicbookshelf #percybyssheshelley #gothicnovel #gothicnovels #annradcliffe #themysteriesofudolpho #supernaturalnovel #18thcentury #18thcenturyhistory #georgiangothic #georgian #gothiclandscapes #matthewgregorylewis #gothicfiction #gothicfictionbooks #classicliterarure #classiclit #pageturners #captainfrederickmarryat #phantomship #gothichistory #theflyingdutchman #phantasmagoria #gothicart #gothictales #ghoststory https://www.instagram.com/p/CRHLpsElJdm/?utm_medium=tumblr

Il monaco di Matthew Lewis
Tumblr media

Out now in a beautiful hardback edition: Gothic shocker THE MONK (1796) by Matthew Gregory Lewis. This edition includes a new introduction by the master of horror himself, Stephen King, along with six full-page illustrations.
When The Monk first appeared in 1796, critics were shocked and outraged. That a Member of Parliament should publish a novel filled with blasphemy, rape, murder, incest, rotting corpses, and devil worship was unthinkable and unprecedented. But efforts to suppress the book failed, readers loved it, and it became a worldwide bestseller. Today it is regarded as one of the finest Gothic horror novels ever written.
This definitive edition of The Monk reprints the unabridged text of the three-volume 1796 first edition from the copy in the British Library and features an introduction by one of the most popular and acclaimed horror writers of our time, Stephen King. Also included are six lurid full-page illustrations from the 1797 and 1807 Paris editions of the novel, along with a portrait of the author and a reproduction of the original title page.

14th or the 16th May 1818, death of English novelist Matthew Gregory Lewis, often referred to as "Monk" Lewis, due to his Gothic horror story ‘The Monk’, which was published in 1796, and was influenced by Ann Radcliffe's The Mysteries of Udolpho, published in 1794. ‘The Monk’ brought Lewis immediate literary success, condemnation due to some of its immoral content, and accolades from Lord Byron, and the Marquis de Sade. In the summer of 1816 Lewis visited Lord Byron, Percy Shelley and Mary Shelley at the Villa Diodati in Geneva, Switzerland, and recounted five ghost stories to the gathering. Percy Shelley had read and been influenced by ‘The Monk’, as a young man, writing his own Gothic novel, ‘Zastrozzi’ in 1810. All books shown contain a reproduction of the original title page with added original illustration influenced by the story. They are made from actual salvaged antique books, with the pages fixed in place so that they can be hung on a wall for a unique display. I was thinking of beginning a new series for my channel, specifically designed as an aid for students who are studying gothic literature in school. First thing’s first that will help: knowing what material in gothic literature is common for study in middle school, junior high, and high school levels. I know as far as Edgar Allan Poe is concerned, it’s “The Raven”, “Annabel Lee”, “Masque of the Red Death”, “The Tell-Tale Heart”, and “The Cask of Amontillado”. If there are other works by Poe or other gothic authors (Mary Shelley, Matthew Gregory Lewis, Ann Radcliffe, Charles Baudelaire, etc), please leave them below so I can compile a guide for this new series. And if you could be so kind as to mention things you have/had trouble with in regard to these pieces, please address them below. I will also include potential analysis questions to consider while reading. . . P.S. I’m having trouble coming up with a name for this series. Suggestions for that can also be left below. 🧐 . . #gothicliterature #education #gothyoutuber #gothgirl #literature #classicliterature #edgarallanpoe #poe #matthewgregorylewis #matthewlewis #annradcliffe #learning #learn #educate #reading #read #literaryanalysis #analysis #gothic #charlesbaudelaire #gothicnovels #gothicnovels #gothicpoem #gothicpoems #gothicpoetry https://www.instagram.com/p/BsUeeCcAjjj/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=14amjlzm8qs68
