I Wrote You A Story: Hard Luck, Chapter 1: It Was a Dark and Stormy Night
Rizzoli & Isles, F/F, Rated T for Thus Far, Just Snappy Dialogue
On a dark and stormy night in Prohibition-era Boston, private detective Jane Rizzoli is taking it easy and waiting for her phone to ring when a knock comes at the door--Maura Isles, socialite, philanthropist, and fiancee of one very dead Garrett Fairfield, Boston's most beloved of golden sons.
(I specifically want to alert @release-the-sheep and @paragonofparadoxes but if you like hardboiled detectives and hard-luck dames, this one's for you, too.)
Excerpt and AO3 link below!
Hard Luck, Chapter 1: It Was a Dark and Stormy Night
I poured her a slug—a small one; I didn’t need a dead dame in my place, particularly not on account of Tommy—and slid it across the desk, like coaxing a skittish kitten with a bowl of milk. It worked, anyway; she swiveled over on her dagger-sharp heels, unwrapping herself from the coat as she crossed to the desk. It had certainly been worth the wait; she was every bit as deadly as her crimson pout might suggest. She wore a tight black dress which, with the flat veiled hat, gave her the look of a widow, but the sort who’d already spent her inheritance on a nice piece of candy or two. Combined with the runny mascara and her air of twitchy misery, it looked to me like the step-kids had just found a loophole in the will. She took the shot like a sailor, setting the glass down with a thud. “Thank you.”

"Callista, I'm worried sick," Evren said. "I can't find her anywhere. I came home and looked here too, and she's left her wedding dress, her veil, everything..." He swallowed. "There's a weird... stain on the dress, I don't know what that's about. I don't know if she's gotten upset about something, I don't know if she's been kidnapped, I don't know if she-" he took a deep breath. "The police refuse to do anything because they think she got 'cold feet' and ran off. I've seen Maura freak out but cold feet? Does that sound like her to you?"

daily lacuna snippet days 1/2
mashing two together! one snippet from chapter 5 (the coronation) and one from chapter 6 (the guildin empire). for these i'm trying to get snippets that are a good glimpse of the major plot points. under cuts for length :)
Chapter 5: The Coronation
Maura has a long black veil over her face when she steps out of her bedroom. She says nothing and Keelan follows her down the hallway without a clue about what could be going through her mind.
The corridors are eerily silent. The only sounds are the rustle of fabric as servants bow and curtsy and the sharp click of Maura's shoes on the marble floors. They go directly to the chapel, where King Proteus's remains are held in an ornate coffin on the front altar.
Maura kneels at the head of the coffin and says something that Keelan can't hear. He keeps a respectful distance and says nothing when Maura returns to her chambers until the start of the funeral. He just waits outside her door until she emerges again and walks with her to the chapel again.
She says nothing. Not even to the priest when he asks her to say a few words in the beloved's memory. The veil hides her expression. Keelan speaks for Proteus, calling him devoted to justice and his daughters, and Maura flinches away from him.
The priest recites the blessings and Keelan does as well, even as a part of him hopes that he never sees Proteus again, in this life or the next. He can't tell if Maura says anything then, either.
She again disappears into her chambers when the funeral is over, and he stands out there for a few hours before a maid notifies him that the crown princess will be taking her meals in for the rest of the day, and that his services are no longer required.
He stands out there for another hour anyway, ears straining for any sound. When he finally returns to the barracks, his nerves are jumping. He paces circles around his bunk, ignoring the other soldiers' eyes on him and the itch in his back.
It's hard to sleep that night, but he somehow manages. It doesn't make him feel any more rested as he makes his way through the castle towards Maura's door.
The priest stops him before he even reaches the royal wing and Keelan grits his teeth. “I am busy at the moment.”
“Going to guard the princess, I know.” The priest gestures towards the great hall. “Unfortunately, she must make the journey to the throne alone. You'll have to join me in the great hall to await her.”
Keelan's fingers itch to wrap around the man's throat, but he forces out a tight nod instead and follows him to the great hall. The servants have set up a platform with the ornate wooden throne used during balls and the like. The priest directs Keelan to stand to the side of the platform, where he will have a good view of the whole room and still be near Maura. It almost makes him like the priest. Almost.
Nobles are seated first, filling up the pews brought in from the chapel and lining the aisle up to the throne. Keelan scans the first few rows, where the diplomats and dignitaries are seated. He doesn't see any missing—a good sign that Proteus's death hasn't changed anything.
Late in the morning, once the nobility has been seated and offered pastries to tide them over until the feast, the commoners are allowed in. They fill the space between the pews and the walls, pressing up against the lines of guards that Keelan posted to keep Maura safe. Soon the balcony is filling up as well, the low hum of conversation rising with every passing minute.
The priest starts to chant and the room hushes as the doors at the far end of the hall swing open. Keelan sucks in a sharp breath as Maura walks in, a vision in blue silk. Her hair is braided around her head, a heavy golden necklace circling her exposed neck. It's laid with rubies and pearls, and the golden crown tucked carefully into her braids is shaped into flowers with sapphire petals. She walks slowly towards where the priest is still chanting some story about the first queen of Raedora and the royal blood that binds them together. Keelan's eyes are on Maura, his thoughts focused on little else.
Over the priest's droning, he hears a whistle. His head snaps towards the upper balcony on the left, but he can't tell which of them had done it. He swears to himself to find out and kill that man.
Maura reaches the platform and stands before the throne, repeating the blessings that the priest chants at her as altar girls throw flower petals ands spritz scented oil over her head. Keelan is sure there is a great deal of meaning to all of this, some symbolism and history, but he can't find it in himself to care.
He can see the tears in the corner of her eyes, the stubborn determination to not let them fall in the crease at the corner of her mouth.
She finally turns again to face the assembled guests, holding aloft a wooden carving of the royal seal. She repeats a final blessing from the priest and the altar girls call in unison, “Rise for Queen Maura of Raedora, Blessed by Rivers and Moons!”
The room erupts with cheers, noble and common alike. Maura's mouth is a tight line. There is a black stripe down the back of her gown.
After a moment, she turns away, still holding the carved wooden seal. The priest takes it from her and she barely glances at him as she brushes past. Keelan falls into step behind her, but she says nothing to him as she leaves the great hall and takes the private stairs up towards the royal wing.
He is afraid to speak, afraid to say the wrong thing again. He can hear Proteus's cracked voice, his frail hand grasping Keelan's wrist. You will be all she has left.
She locks the door and he stands outside her room, cursing his useless tongue.
Chapter 6: The Guildin Empire (this one got long sorry lol)
Keelan paces a seventieth circle around his cell and glances out the window. It's just past midday, making it nearly a full day since his arrest. He's not worried yet, but he is getting very bored. The guards play cards outside the cell door with their spears across their laps and neither of them speak a word of Raedoran, so he is left to entertain himself.
He starts his seventy-first circle around the cell and hears a scream from below his feet, cut off abruptly. The guards look up from their card game.
Another scream reaches them from down the stairs. One of the guards picks up his spear and brandishes it at the window in the door. He says something in Guildin, glaring at Keelan. Keelan just shrugs. “I'm not doing anything.”
A golden thread of magic wraps around the guard's spear and yanks it out of his hands. Maura appears at the top of the stairs, holding the spear and wearing an absolutely murderous expression. She says something in Guildin that makes both guards kneel and cower against the floor. She strides over to the cell door and it flies open with a flick of her wrist.
“Keys.” She wraps her arms around him tightly and he inhales sharply, feeling his whole body relax with her touch. “They didn't hurt you?”
“I'm fine,” he assures her, smiling and cupping her face in his hands. “I hate heights and I'm a little hungry, but it's nothing a good meal and a nap won't cure.”
She nods, but glances over her shoulder at the cowering guards. “I need to have a word with my cousin about this...unfortunate misunderstanding.”
“Did they tell you why I was arrested?”
“Apparently a witness saw you using magic in the port.” She walks over to one of the guards and presses her fingers to his temples, golden light soaking into his head. His eyes roll back and he collapses to the ground, unconscious. The other guard squeaks with fear but still lets Maura do the same to her. Maura is gentler with her, leaning her against the wall instead of letting her fall to the floor. “My father’s country is quite hostile to witches.”
“I see.” He watches as she murmurs a short spell over each guard. The tower is deathly silent after a moment. “I heard screams.”
“I didn’t kill anyone.” She starts down the stairs and he follows. They pass several unconscious guards and Maura does the same process to them that she did to Keelan’s. He figures it’s a memory spell and resolves to say nothing more about it—Maura knows how he feels about memory magic and rehashing that argument won't do any good.
She summons his cloak when they reach the bottom of the tower. “They brought this to me when they told me you’d been arrested.” She runs her fingers over the purple silk. “I nearly killed the guards who did.”
Keelan takes it and swings it around his shoulders. “Why?”
“Because for a moment I thought they’d executed you.” She pushes open the tower door and the Raedoran guards waiting in the street all bow at once. “We’re returning to the palace,” she announces to them. “I need to speak with the emperor.”
She vaults up onto her horse and Keelan is relieved to see his horse's reins being held by one of the soldiers. He takes the reins and follows Maura to the palace on horseback.
Maura ignores the soldiers at the gates and rides through as if she rules this country as well. Keelan follows, noting the soldiers who gasp and whisper when they see him. Maura dismounts smoothly and throws her horse's reins at the nearest stable boy, snapping something in Guildin that the boy responds to with a low bow and a squeaked reply. Maura gestures for Keelan to follow her and strides up the stairs into the palace.
The throne room of the Guildin emperor is open to the sea, a large balcony jutting out over the water below. A light breeze blows in from the beach, stirring Keelan's cloak around his legs. The Guildin emperor sits up in his throne, raising his eyebrows at the two of them. Keelan sees the resemblance to Proteus immediately—the deep brown eyes, the same low brow and square jaw. Emperor Nikandros is nearly ten years older than Maura, but he still has an air of youth about him.
A finely-dressed woman standing at the foot of Nikandros's throne bristles in annoyance at their entrance. “I have an audience with His Imperial Majesty. We were not to be disturbed.”
Maura looks at her with mild disinterest. “Who are you?”
“Queen Maura,” Nikandros says pleasantly. “Wonderful to see you. This is the Duchess of Botford.”
“The Duchess of Botford.” Maura looks her up and down. “The manners in Botford must be atrocious if you are its duchess. I was under the impression that duchesses bowed to royalty.”
The duchess puffs up, her face going red. “Guildin law does not demand that I bow to some foreigner.”
Maura raises an eyebrow. “You don't know who I am? You do not know my face? You do not know my father?” She draws herself up, looking down her nose at the duchess. “You are either uneducated or a fool, or both. Neither helpful qualities for a duchess.”
“I will not—”
“You will know me soon enough,” Maura says scathingly. She points to a portrait hanging on the wall. “Look, then, Your Grace! What do you see?”
The duchess glances at the portrait and Keelan almost flinches when he sees Proteus's face staring out at him. He's younger in the portrait, fewer greying hairs. Hanging next to him is a smaller portrait of Rosaleen, but it's not as good a likeness.
“That is Prince Proteus of Titrodoreos, Third Star of the Guildin Empire,” Maura spits. The duchess's eyes have gone wide, flicking back to Maura as the realization dawns. “That is my father, whose funeral I have traveled here from Raedora to attend. What does that make me, then, Your Grace?”
“Your Majesty,” the duchess stutters.
“Indeed.” Maura clenches her hands into fists. “I am Princess Maura of Titrodoreos, Queen of Raedora and Fifth Star of the Empire. An insult to a member of the imperial family is punishable by Guildin law with the loss of a foot to stand on. If the law offers mercy, it is to choose which foot to keep.”
“Your Majesty, I beg your pardon—”
Maura bares her teeth. “Then beg.”
The duchess gets down on her knees, pressing her forehead against the throne room floor. “Mercy, Your Majesty. I was wrong to speak in such a way.”
“Cousin,” Nikandros says cajolingly. “Surely you don't mean to enforce such harsh punishment for a misunderstanding.”
“There have been many misunderstandings today,” Maura says, her eyes flashing. “I am growing tired of them. I came here for my father's funeral and your foolish guards arrested my sworn shield.” The duchess is still cowering on the floor, but Maura ignores her, rounding on the emperor with all the fury she brought with her to the tower. “They detained him for an entire day and refused to tell me where they were keeping him. Considering that my own mother was murdered by magic, I was upset to find that my most loyal protector had been wrongfully accused of using magic on Guildin soil.”'
“Queen Maura, this truly is an unfortunate misunderstanding—”
“I'm not finished,” she snaps, and Nikandros pales a shade. “Not only did your guards wrongfully imprison my knight, your so-called nobility—” she gestures at the blubbering duchess “—doesn't know how to act properly in the presence of the imperial family. They don't even know who I am, which suggests that the Empire does not value its relationship with my people. I am insulted, cousin.” She pauses, straightening her spine so that she can look down her nose at him. “What do you plan to do to rectify this situation?”
“Well,” Nikandros says, glancing down at the duchess. “The duchess certainly didn't mean to harm you in such a way. I am sure that if she—”
“My father said something to me often,” Maura interrupts, her eyes narrowing. “The law is the law. None are exempt.” She tosses a disdainful look at the duchess. “Those who have no respect for the law will always have excuses for breaking it.” She crouches down and tips the duchess's chin up with a finger. Keelan's fingers tighten around his sword. Maura tilts her head to the side. “Your Grace,” she says. “You asked for mercy. You shall have it.”
The duchess sobs. “Thank you, Your Majesty—”
“Do not thank me, wretch.” Maura's lip curls. “Your mercy is the mercy allotted by law. Tell me. Which foot do you value more?”
The duchess's lip trembles. “I beg you, Your Majesty, mercy—”
“You shall have it.” Maura's eyes are unforgiving. “Which foot?”
The duchess's eyes dart around the throne room, wide and terrified. “I—I don't know.”
“Hm.” Maura releases her and stands. “She can have more time to decide. Until she does, get her out of my sight.”
Guildin soldiers materialize and lead the sobbing duchess away. Nikandros jumps a little when Maura turns back to him.
“I hope that the unfortunate situation with the duchess is resolved, then?” he says, his voice a note higher than it had been before.
“I expect her punishment will be carried out before I leave in two days,” Maura says smoothly. “If she does not choose a foot I will choose one for her.”
“Ah. Yes.” Nikandros clears his throat, settling back in his throne. “As for the incident with your knight, I am sure we can ask the witness what—”
“Sir Keelan was handpicked by my father, knighted by my mother, swore his life to my service, and has protected me with it for years now,” Maura says. “Do not insult me further by offering to entertain a witness whose claim is clearly false.”
“I meant no insult—”
“Of course you didn't.” Keelan wonders if Nikandros has ever been interrupted this many times before. He doesn't seem to be handling it well; there is sweat beading on his brow and he looks vaguely nauseous. “And yet here I stand. Insulted.”
“What can I do to make it up to you?” Nikandros asks. It's the first intelligent thing he's said since Keelan and Maura walked into the room, and Keelan breathes a small sigh of relief on his behalf. “Please, Queen Maura, I want to fix this.”
Maura looks down at him for a long minute, contemplating. “Diplomacy is not your strong suit. Did your mother teach you nothing?”
Nikandros is smart enough not to answer.
“You have a son,” Maura says. “Prince Leonnatos.”
Nikandros's face goes red. “Leo's fifteen. Whatever you're—”
“You married his mother at seventeen.” Maura is unmoved and Keelan wonders how long it will take for Nikandros to realize that he is not going to get his way. “Prince Leonnatos will marry a Raedoran noble of his choice.”
“Leo is the future emperor,” Nikandros says through gritted teeth, his knuckles whitening on the arms of his throne. “He cannot—”
“Guildi and Raedora have been allies since my parents were married,” Maura says. “Something that has greatly enriched your people thanks to the bountiful trade that has kept mine strong. You need me to keep trade routes open with the west, and to prevent war with the various other nations that you have irritated with your imperial actions. The fact that you either don't know this, or don't seem to grasp the consequences of insulting me further by refusing a reasonable request, suggests that the sunset of the Empire that my father always warned me of is approaching.”
Nikandros presses his lips together. After a moment, he slumps a bit in his throne. “Leo and I will come to Raedora after your father's funeral,” he says, reaching up to rub his forehead. “I assume you have an idea of how all of it will go from there.”
“I will invite the eligible nobility around his age to a ball. He can choose there who he wishes to marry.” She walks past the throne to stare out over the edge of the balcony at the city. “Don't worry, Nick. Leo's not the first Guildin prince to face an arranged marriage.”
Keelan clenches his jaw and picks a spot on the wall. He focuses on the smooth sandstone, the specks of quartz captured in the yellow rock. Anything but the thought of marriage.
“I know this is a difficult time for you,” Nikandros says, moving to stand next to her. “When my mother died...nothing is the same when they're gone.”
“At least your father is still alive,” Maura says.
“He is a shell. Nothing about him is the same.” Nikandros runs his fingers through his hair, a human gesture that improves Keelan's estimation of him. “He is not my father anymore. Losing my mother killed him anyway.”
“Yes,” Maura says quietly. “Losing my mother killed my father, too.”

Just in the nick of time I have April's bday drawing! This was a big one since I had 8 OCs I was pulling together. With spring here, I figured doing some gardening would do well although Eban and Grace are the only ones actually gardening while the others goof off. I have updated a few of the characters designs since the last time I drew them!

*queues this thing into the future after months of it being in the writing oven* hello! i'm the doctor :)
for midam week 2k21, day 7: melody. (inspired by an actual, iconic scene from doom patrol season 1 episode 8! i wrote this back in april after watching that episode and started to translate it afterward. you don't need to know the show, but if you want a reference or background music or you're simply curious, here's the scene on youtube!)
Adam has always liked music. The number of songs he used to, well, scream at the top of his lungs the first years in the Cage for the sake of keeping himself some company — no matter how much Michael told him to shut up — and some memories that the archangel has grown to know by heart are proof of this. He still sings sometimes, even now.
It's mostly little bits and pieces he picks up here and there between his shifts and a trip to the grocery store, but Michael listens to him nonetheless. Adam knows it, and in a way, he has come to understand why — he can feel Michael's grace tinkle, and the whirlwind of his very core buzzing with a warm sense of calm and contentment. It's kind of the reason why he keeps doing it, keeps humming stray melodies. And to be honest, music's good for Adam, too. It makes his soul flutter uniquely, or so Michael has noticed, not without a mix of confused endearment and curiosity. It's actually normal for pretty much any human out there, but well, it's not like Michael pays attention to any soul other than the one nestled next to his grace. Like now, for instance, while they sit in comfortable silence, watching a TV series that even Michael seems to be fairly interested in. Adam shifts for a bit, eyes on the screen, where the Negative Man has just started, to his surprise given what kind of character he is, to sing. And sure, it's probably because of the context and the lyrics and the bubbling crescendo of good feelings in his body but—the point is, that suddenly, from his side of the bond, Michael hears him think ‘what the hell’. Then he stands up and holds his hand out to the archangel. "Alright, come here," Adam says, eyes expectant and a tad bit nervous. A good kind of nervous though, Michael notes, studying him with furrowed brows. It doesn't take him much to understand what exactly Adam is asking for, and no matter how much he is always willing to humor him if there is anything that the archangel Michael has never done that is dancing. So he shifts his gaze from Adam's outstretched hand up to his face and pointedly says, "I think I'll pass, kid." Michael's lips are pursued in a deadpanned, but not an unamused or grumpy line, and that's enough for Adam to nudge him. Not to mention, he's most certainly not exposing himself to take no for an answer. "Oh, come on, old man," Adam presses, idly and unafraid to clash with Michael's stubbornness, the corners of his lips lifted upwards and his blue irises alight with something akin to mischief. "It'll be fun!" "Adam, I don't dance." "Just this once?" Michael quirks an eyebrow. Not much, but it still holds one hell of a whirlwind of expressions and gives Adam the impression to be looked at through and thorough — he is... bubbly, content, and a billion different little human things. And, while on the TV screen the main character's bandages start to disappear, making him look human again for the first time after decades, his soul's ringing feels a little softer. With an exasperated sigh, Michael eventually takes Adam's hand and stands up in a swift motion. "Just this once." Adam grins, cheery and maybe just a little smug. From this up close — aside from their breaths meeting and the buzzing sensation of skin against faux skin — the flow of his warm-colored mirth pulses more clearly than before. It's tangible; radiant.
(As if Michael didn't love him enough already.) ‘You're insufferable.’ Michael's grace whispers, but the tacit affection threaded within the words spoken over their bond is so evident that it glimmers in his apparition's eyes, and Adam, for the life of him, can't help but blush. Not too much alright, but, if only to ignore the light heat rising to his cheeks and for the sake of his so-called insufferableness, he shrugs in a what can you do kind of way and says, "Heh, you like me anyway and you know it." Michael looks him dead in the eyes. "Do I." "Hey." Michael tilts his head with an amused glint of his grace and really, sometimes, Adam almost misses when back in the days he was about as expressive as a marble statue. Or a rock, for that matter. He shakes his head with an equally playful scoff and takes a step back, pushing the coffee table with the back of his leg in order to have a little more space. Michael looks at his movements with rapt attention, specifically when Adam shows him where to put his hands and by consequence moves a little closer. "Here, just..." Adam's murmur is slightly muffled by all the singing that is going on on the TV screen, but that doesn't make the light flustered note on his voice any less obvious, clearly. His eyes meet Michael's, and Adam takes in a breath, their noses almost touching. He finds himself feeling a little off, a little mesmerized really—but not necessarily in a bad way. His lips twitch, glimmering irises and warm blue. "...hey," he exhales. His cheeks start to hurt a little because of the amount of smiling he stupidly feels like doing right now. Michael doesn't make that kind of ache go away with a brush of his grace, he's come to associate it with the good chemicals that fizzle all over their body and the happiest his vessel — his only friend, his... Adam—can be. So, the archangel mimics the gesture, in his own way, while tracing the fabric of Adam's shirt with his fingers. "Hey yourself," he says, voice is low and deep despite the light playfulness dripping from his words. Under his touch, Adam shivers and hurries to shrug it off. "Right, so, you gotta— relax your shoulders, there. Good. Don't think, just..." Adam starts to sway a little, left and right, with growing confidence as his movements begin to follow the music. He's not in perfect sync with it, at all really, but hey, they're in their home after all! His hand is pressed against Michael's side — it tingles a bit with the echo of the buzzing, unleashed power concealed within the archangel's apparition and the thrill Adam feels blossom in his chest first — and with a light pull, it sets a playful invitation to move along. Michael does as much, if a bit stiffly and mostly to humor him, and Adam chuckles. Dancing is not much different from eating or taking a shower or a bath, to Michael, that much is clear. It's better than eating, for sure, but it's still too human, for him at least, to come naturally or even make sense, or hold some kind of appeal. Nonetheless, Adam's sensations latch onto his own in the same way their fingers entwine. They flow in through lowered veils and walls, carrying genuine amusement and happiness, and Michael finds — unsurprisingly, for the most part — easy to take them in and let himself be carried away by them. Enough for his faux body to move more fluidly, naturally even. Which is ridiculous: he's a soldier, definitely not a dancer. (The things he does for love.) "Wow, you're not that bad, you know that?" Adam chimes in, all ringing soul and silvery voice. "Very funny," Michael scoffs, a pointed look that accompanies his dry remark. "I think I'll leave you to the rest of the song now. I'll be fine for the next couple of decades." He takes a step back, lifts his arm, and twirls Adam around. People like us, we've gotta stick together, Keep your head up, nothing lasts forever... Adam laughs. And he spins on his heels, too; a fluid movement before he winds his arms around Michael's shoulders and finds himself closer to him, chest to chest. (Within their shared body, between grace and soul, it feels like pure euphoria.) Here's to the damned, to the lost and forgotten... Their noses brush, tenderly. And damn it, he said decades, which—okay, Adam digresses, but damn, does it make his heart flutter! Still, stubbornly and gleeful, he grins, mirroring the state of their truest beings. "Too bad, you're not leaving me at the chorus, Michael, it's literally the best part to sing along!" "I'm not singing." And that's not debatable. "Nah, I know that. But I sure as hell am!" Because listen, Adam is in no way, shape, or form the kind of guy to be, you know, a party animal or anything of the sort. But this is far from the most embarrassing, stupid thing Michael saw him do. They're well past that, thank you very much, especially when it comes to his singing. Maura and Larry's voices resonate in the room, powerful and beautiful in their unity, Adam's own promptly in tow. "We are all misfits living in a world on fireee. . .!" he sings, spreading his arms, his soul vibrant and alight. Nested around it, the grumpy old solar fire projected right in front of him fills his body with an iridescent rush of warmth. Michael doesn't sing along with him, Adam doesn't expect him to, but his eyes crinkle in that fond way of his, and his body moves along the lively melody. He's mesmerized, captivated by the human in front of him so much that if any one of them were the type, they would say that suddenly, it's like they're not even in their little living room anymore. Music does that, too, doesn't it? Bringing colors and life to the people like them, that is. Sing it for the people like us — Adam entwines their fingers. They are, of course, the mirror image of one another, and fit together like puzzle pieces. He stumbles a bit on the lyrics, which to be fair he is not all that familiar with, he's mostly following the characters' lead, but it's not important. It doesn't need to be perfect. Not that Adam would care, given how Michael takes most of his attention. "They can't do nothing to you," In tune with the music and with laugher on his lips, Adam steps towards Michael. "They can't do nothing to me," Michael's grace scoffs in mirth, and amusement dances in his eyes while he takes a step himself, his hands tight around Adam's and in motion. "This is the life that we choose—" It's a happy moment, Adam's voice is as vibrant as his soul, and yet, Michael senses the echo of an unspoken promise when he sings: "This is the life that we bleed." It sinks in the threads of his grace and the line of his mouth, as the quickening rhythm tries to slither into the lessening space between them and lights up Adam's grin. They meet in the middle, and their foreheads rest against each other despite the frantic rhythm. Quicker and livelier by the second. "So throw your fits in the air. Come out," Their hands clenched around each other and the tip of their noses bump playfully, causing Adam's voice to crack with amusement and a dash of sheepishness for the proximity. "Come out if you dare!" And it doesn't take much for Michael's impossibly blue eyes to slide from Adam's own to his beaming lips. "Tonight we're gonna...!" Then the distance is no more. —change forever. Adam goes stiff out of surprise for a moment. Michael, eyes closed, can feel the tangible quirk of his lips, smiling against his own. Then Adam's arms are around Michael's neck, and when they part, his heart is beating furiously and he would very much like to spare an offhand comment of any kind, but he doesn't. Larry's daydream dissolves abruptly into harsh reality; the music, the song stop. Meanwhile though, in that odd little living room, for once in their very long lives, reality is sweeter. Not idyllic or easy, but quieter; tangible. Theirs. Sing it for the people like us, the people like us.

Capitalist Pigs in Space
Inspired by Maura Quint (@behindyourback on twitter): A full length feature film starring Miss Piggy, Link Hogthrob, and Julius Strangepork as the crew of the Swinetrek, a spacecraft attempting to make contact with BBQORG. Link and Dr. Strangepork are of the mind that they'll be stronger if they join up with the BBQORG, a cybernetic hive mind and thinly veiled stand-in for a monopolistic conglomerate, unaware it would literally turn the pigs into a commodity, namely pork futures to become barbecue at some not-too-distant date. It's up to Miss Piggy, and her expansive library of socialist, feminist, and intersectional literature ranging from the works of Pauli Murray up to and through Zillah Eisenstein's writings to save the crew and the galaxy from a rapacious and cataclysmic economic system.

FIC: Among the Weak and the Wicked, Chapter 1: In Sympathy
hi it’s me again; I really was enjoying a mental rest and recharge but then I got fired (from a job I really wanted to quit, at least) so now I need something to entirely occupy my mind for a while!
so here we go with Among the Weak and the Wicked, part iv (jaisus) of my Gilded Age Rizzles AU The Age of Wickedness!
get hype for Ye Olde London-Town! and murder! and dyke stuff! and international political intrigue (hope you’re excited to learn about labor movements and the birth of modern socialism)!and oh, Constance Isles is a main character in this one (I love writing her; she’s got that charisma, uniqueness, nerve, etc that I just delight in)!
Jane and Maura are obligated to travel to London after the death of Maura's father in order to participate in the complex and rigid mourning practices demanded of Maura’s social station. Constrained by etiquette to remain within the opulent-but-shrouded Hyde Park mansion ruled over by Maura's stern, proper grandmother Lady Margaret and joined in black-veiled isolation by the elegant, distant, recently-widowed Constanze Isles, the pair spend their days bored and frustrated by the strict and monotonous rules of mourning--until a series of bodies are discovered in the dim, silent manse; the killer almost certainly moving just as silently among them.
see you next time!

On the morning of the wedding, Maura's favorite relatives gathered in her kitchen. Catalinia turned it into a makeshift salon with makeup spread out on the counter, her jewelry box on the island counter, and a huge bag with hair products and a curling iron hidden behind it. Callista had brought a cup of coffee and was completely engrossed in managing the schedule, checking her watch every five minutes.
"Maura, you look stunning," Catalinia said cheerfully as she adjusted Maura's veil for the twenty-fifth time. "Evren is going to faint at the altar."
"I'd rather he didn't," Maura said with a small smile. Her mind was reeling with concerns. Not so much for Evren himself as for everything - and everyone - else. She hoped Rachel would behave. She hoped Rachel's child - apparently now children, somehow, according to gossip - would behave. And of course, Claudia was too busy being anxious about the prospect (as in, absolute certainty) that Roman Bellamy was going to show up at the wedding as Rachel's plus one.
"Trent says they got done dressing Evren hours ago," Callista said.
Catalinia snorted. "They're men, they don't understand beauty."
Claudia rolled her eyes. As if Maura didn't always look like a princess who got lost in a fairytale and accidentally landed in their world.
"If I was in charge of Evren, I'd take just as long preparing him," Catalinia said. "Your man is gorgeous, but with some extra makeup, we'd accentuate his features..."
Maura, suddenly uncomfortable with any of her relatives swooning over Evren, decided to change the subject. "Callista, how's everything else coming along?"
"Caterers are ready, the band is ready, your grandparents are late."
As usual, Maura thought, gritting her teeth. Then again, perhaps that was for the best.

Since today is National Sibling Day, I figured I'd highlight my OCs and their siblings. I almost did a drawing of my brothers and I but I thought about it too late so hopefully next year! For now my lovely OCs. A ton of my other OCs do have siblings but I’ve neither named nor designed them so I’m only highlighting the siblings already established.
For those who keep up with my art, Zeke and Kimmie may be a surprise but they are step siblings.
