I'm sure @staff has kind of a lot on their plate right now but while I'm thinking of it, this would be nice to have:

Add a Fandom community label. Or a dedicated universal tag, or a box you can check during post creation, or just anything that has the ultimate effect of allowing users to filter fan content.

This could at-least-slightly ameliorate problems with the search.

I have come into acceptance of the fact that fixing the notoriously dysfunctional search, even on individual blogs, is just way, way, way out of scope for some reason. Tumblr must know that a functional search would radically increase engagement, so I assume that the persistence of this glaring problem means that there is simply no way to fix it. I tell myself that "search" really just means "give me a handful of related suggestions" and not "show me every instance of X". I am learning to live with this.

What compounds this issue is that there is no way to separate fan content from content directly related to your search terms.

EXAMPLE: I search for a popular movie, and the results are so overburdened with people's personal stories and drawings that it's impossible for me to find anything actually related to the film. I give up quickly and Tumblr loses engagement from both me and the people who post screencaps/gifs/music/production info/etc.

EXAMPLE: I'm searching for something--anything--but my commonplace search term happens to be related to a very specific fandom. Perhaps I have never even heard of this fandom. But after scrolling through yards and yards of fan fiction, I have to give up, and Tumblr loses engagement from me and also whoever is posting about the actual thing I wanted.

OTHER NEGATIVE EFFECTS:

1. I stopped tracking ALL tags because they were constantly serving me fan content. I haven't bothered with tags for years because of this.

2. I blocked tons of innocent users because I couldn't avoid seeing their fan content; in order to stop seeing it, I have to sacrifice our entire ability to interact. I'm not alone there, sometimes I even see a note about this in someone's header ("Sorry you're blocked, it's probably because Tumblr won't stop showing me your fan art").

All of these scenarios happen to me and other users all the time and we have been vocally complaining about this. And I know Tumblr has rebranded itself as the fandom app in recent years, but I would say that even a fandom person still wants to see i.e. actual movie & TV show stuff and not just other people's drawings and stories.

So basically Tumblr has two big, related problems: Search doesn't really work AND is clogged with fan content that drowns out everything else.

BUT what if we could just have ONE problem? What if the search had a toggle that includes or excludes fan content. Then even if the search only gives me limited results, I can improve those results by making sure they are ONLY related directly to the thing I want. This would make the Tumblr search instantly, hugely more useful and I would do way more with it, way more often.

Maybe it could even work both ways, like I can choose to ONLY see fan content for a given search term, fandom folks would probably have a use for that. But the main thing for me is that even if search functionality is unfixably limited, I could refine the limited results and get only the most relevant stuff by excluding one common piece of metadata. Problem not-solved, but significantly reduced!

Set up: You enjoying the projects of your favorite creators when something starts reaching out through the glass screen. As a big fan of Jacksepticeye, you’ve followed the gradual world building around his characters. Excited for more development with one in particular.

Sean’s projects are fun to follow. You had enjoyed his regular content long enough, but were pleasantly surprised by the sudden shift in a few videos during the Halloween of 2016. The random glitching effects were spooky and it made you excited. Then he released that pumpkin carving video.

Welp, now you were fully invested.

Each introduction of a new “ego” was extremely exciting. The JSE community went wild with every new character. However, Anti always pulled your attention.

You indulged in fan creations of him. Art, fanfics, maybe even revisiting old videos featuring him. The buzz of excitement was still there.

You couldn’t possibly predict that this simple interest would go so far.

It honestly wasn’t anything of note at first. It all started when your phone vibrated so hard to a notification that it fell off a countertop and cracked when it hit the floor. It was still functional though, and the screen didn’t cut your fingers when you scrolled. You were disappointed at your carelessness, but shrugged it off as a “future me will deal with it” problem.

Then it was your battery draining faster than usual. Noticeably so. You either had to shill out for a new phone or a portable battery charger- you chose the later. Though, this too didn’t seem to hold a charge after a while.

It was odd, you started getting messages from a random number during this whole process, saying they were a friend from high school, Anthony. You didn’t recall the name, but they would talk about interests you shared so you figured you could catch up and would remember eventually. The phone situation left you too frazzled to question it too much.

Your phone continued to be difficult. The charging cable would spark occasionally when you plugged it in. Which didn’t change when you bought a new one. It made you extremely nervous when you would leave it charging overnight.

Anthony was becomes someone you would regularly talk to when these issues started wearing you out. He mentioned studying in electrical engineering and would give solid advice to try and fix it. Which left you both disappointed when said fix didn’t seem to work.

Eventually the screen would stop reacting to your prompts. Randomly starting or closing apps, cutting the wifi access, pulling up pages you never searched for, or refusing to respond entirely before powering off like it had no charge.

At this point you felt comfortable enough to accept his offer to come over and see if he could fix it in person.

A harsh sound of what almost sounded like your alarm screeched from your phone. You, barely awake, chucked said device across the room where it met the wall and clattered to the floor, falling silent. You winced immediately realizing the dumb decision and slowly crawled to the flickering screen.

Really it was silly how this whole thing felt like a horror cliche.

The screen looked even more cracked than before. Yep… gonna have to get a new one. There wasn’t even a solid image anymore. RBG lines crisscrossed along the cracks. At this point, you just wanted to turn it off and stop worrying about it. You barely touched the device when you received a harsh shock. You let out a frustrated sigh and looked for the light switch only to find that it wasn’t working. Now all you wanted to do was crawl back to bed. Screw life plans, you were frustrated beyond belief.

A chirping giggle echoed in the room. Your hair immediately stood on end- wait, that sounded familiar. You hoped and prayed to whatever was listening that you were just sleep deprived and hearing things.

Another laugh but it came from right behind you. Trying the switch again, the light finally popped on and you quickly whipped around.

Oh god, there was someone in your room. At the quick glance at a figure that wasn’t supposed to be there, you inhaled sharply for a scream when they rushed you against the wall, covering your mouth with a hand.

“Shh shh, calm down. I’m not gonna hurt you… we’re best friends after all” he giggled again.

Whimpering as you clawed at his hands and arms, you slowly came to recognize the person hunched over you and froze. This didn’t make sense. Best friends? What was he talking about?

The subject of your most recent interests, Antisepticeye, had somehow manifested in your room.

His smile widened at your change in expression. He loved how easy you were to read.

“You recognize me from those videos don’t you? I have to thank you for inviting me in, that was awfully kind.” You wriggled and attempted to remove his hand again, but his iron grip remained unmoving. What in the world what he talking about?

He leaned in closer, “Hold on now, promise me you’ll be good and won’t scream?” You attempted a nod and he hummed, seeming satisfied. Removing himself, he remained crouched above you, keeping you huddled up against the wall.

A moment of silence passed with him staring down at you. His skin had that odd green tint and his eyes flashed as his gaze danced across your form. You finally stuttered out, “w-why… how-“ your breathing was quick and uneven.

“Awe why the long face, (y/n)? Not excited to see your best friend Anthony?”

Your heart dropped. This couldn’t be real. He couldn’t possibly be the same person that started contacting you.

Your mouth was dry. His grip felt real enough… but you couldn’t understand, “how are you here?-“

“I needed to.. get out of an unfortunate little situation. I hope you don’t mind. You really are such a darling to invite me over.” he started running his hands over the furniture in your room. “Feels good- feels great, to have this freedom, (y/n). Honestly I can’t thank you enough.”

This was dangerous. You could only gauge with what info you gained from Sean’s videos and you couldn’t possibly imagine what he might do with you. You glanced at the stuttering phone and wondered if you might be able to call emergency services and slowly took it from the floor.

Of course, he noticed.

Anti swiftly swiped the it out of your hand. “Sorry, I think I might’ve busted this,” he said with a smirk, “I said I’d fix it for ya, right? I return this in a jiffy, don’t worry.”

Not waiting for a response he continued, “Though, I got a few other… errands to run. I’ll be back in a bit, sweetheart. Be good while I’m gone~” with that he glitched out of sight.

You stood looking baffled for a minute.

This had to be a dream. It didn’t make sense. Maybe things were starting to blur together, surely that was the case.

It was a miracle that it was your weekend. So crawled back under the covers and hoped you’d wake back up to a normal life with normal friends. They’re gonna laugh when they hear this.

After the refreshing nap, and convincing yourself you dreamt it all, you couldn’t find your phone when you normally left it on the charger. Venturing into the kitchen, instant relief hit when you saw said device on the countertop. You had been thoroughly shaken by the dream earlier and hoped to talk to some friends for a distraction.

Surprisingly, the cracked screen had been fixed. You swallowed hard.

Just a dream right?

Cautiously, you picked it up and turned it on. There was the same goofy lock screen you had before and your passcode hadn’t changed. A message popped up as soon as it was unlocked.

“All better :)

Hope you have a nice day (y/n)”

You knew who this was from, but didn’t want to believe it.

Who else could it be other than Anthony?

You realized he had your phone for a few hours and a sick feeling rose in your chest when thinking that he must’ve snooped through everything.

You looked through everything to see what, if anything, changed and sure enough apps were missing, most all of your contacts had been removed and all messages were deleted… except for his. You tried, but found that it wouldn’t let you reinstall any of your missing apps which were mostly consisted of all social media.

You had some breakfast and looked back over your phone, trying to think of solutions other than reseting the whole thing. Then you noticed that the message you had seen from Anthony had vanished. Instead was replaced with a few others thanking you for letting him over, saying it was a nice visit. You asked for clarification, you must be getting sick if you don’t remember ever meeting him.

He responded by saying he thought you looked a little out of it and that you wanted to go rest as soon as he was finished.

You did feel a little off and you really didn’t have any other reason to not believe him…

You hoped your mind wasn’t suddenly starting to fail on you. You were too young to go senile.

Nothing else out of the ordinary happened for the rest of the weekend and into the work week. By this time you were absolutely convinced you just had a weird episode and resumed your normal life habits. Laughing with friends, texting the only person your phone would let you, getting annoyed with work and busying yourself with hobbies at home. Even going out on the spare chance you could gather all your friends on a shared day of free time. You tried to schedule another meeting with Anthony, but work and school had him deadlocked.

You shrugged it off and were none the wiser to the plans in motion that took place perfectly within your blind spot.

Fili drove straight back to the clubhouse after he left Kili on the side of the highway waiting for a tow truck. A tow truck that would take Kili to his parent’s house. He stopped himself. It was Kili’s house. 

Kili’s house. 

He could not just go home after learning that information. If he went home he might download social media apps and search for Kili to see what he had been up to all these years. Something that Fili had consciously stopped himself several times over the years. It had been harder when he was younger and social media was new and everyone was on there posting photos of their shoes, their car, their lunch, their snack, their pet, any unhinged thing that occurred to them. And they attached actual thoughts or stories to those pictures, not just inspiration quotes that were taken straight from Pinterest or copied from a listicle. Things became less personal, and it was less enjoyable and informative and satisfying to stalk people online because there was content, but it told you less than nothing about the person in most cases. 

He thought about seeing who was on the after hours tow truck rotation. What he would do with that information he did not know. Take their place? Grill them for information? 

“Fili!” Nori called out when Fili walked into the great room of the club house. It was Friday so the room was decently full with members and their significant others. The room was different than it had been when Fili and Kili had been teenagers. There was no more cigarette smoke, the music was less loud, and it had been redecorated with Dis’ assistance fairly recently meaning that not everything was black leather, glass, and chrome. 

Fili grabbed a beer from the fridge and made his way over to join the cluster around Nori who was regaling his audience with a story about his previous weekend which seemed to have involved a lot of alcohol, a not insignificant amount of weed, and had ended with Nori passed out in his back lawn without any pants or underwear. Fili listened, but his thoughts kept wandering back to Kili. 

“So…?”

“What?” Fili asked, snapping back to the moment to find most of the little circle looking at him.

“I heard the call out come in.”

Fili raised his eyebrows, playing ignorant, “What call?”

“Kili.”

“Oh?” Fili raised the beer to his lips.

“You’re not cute,” Nori replied.

“Debatable,” Fili grinned.

“I know you know what I’m talking about.”

“Hmm?”

“He said you already diagnosed his car’s problem.”

“Mhm.”

“And?”

“It’s the alternator.”

Nori gave Fili a pointed look. 

Fili took that as his indication to leave. “I should get home, busy day tomorrow.”

Nori snorted. “Yeah, getting under the hood of a certain brunette.”

“It’s been over a decade,” Fili replied hotly. “We’ve both moved on. His car needs fixed. I’m on the schedule for tomorrow morning. You can go look for yourself. You can even come supervise me if you think I can’t be professional.”

Nori snorted. “That’s not something I need to see.”

“Fuck you.” Fili turned on his heel and left before anything else that he might come to regret came out of his mouth. Maybe home would have been a better choice.

He crammed his helmet on and then sat in the parking lot astride his big black bike connecting his phone to the bluetooth function in his helmet and then scrolling through music trying to find the right mood. He listened to a song for a few seconds and then skipped it. He sat there, focusing on that, calming down and not thinking about Kili,  until a text came in. 

Isa: Are you busy?

Fili: Maybe. Why?

Isa: The plans I had fell through.

Fili: Tinder boy a no show?

Isa: More like Tinder boy was a walking red flag. Isa: Literally

Fili: What were you thinking?

Isa: Drinks at the Green Dragon?

Fili: You buying?

Isa: Uh. What happened?

Fili: You’re not the only one who had something unexpected happen.

Isa: Color me interested.

Fili: Easier in person

Isa: I’m going to change and then I’ll be on my way.

Fili: Already on my bike

The Green Dragon was Bilbo’s pet project. Thorin had bought it for him as a birthday gift a few years ago. They still teased Bilbo that Thorin had given him a job to get him out of the house more often. But many of the club’s members frequented the pub. It filled a gap that many towns had. Bilbo called it “a third space” during the morning and afternoons people would meet there for book clubs, knitting groups, or just to grab a cup of coffee and people watch. Coffee, tea, pastries, some basic sandwiches, and salads were the main fare until after 5pm, when it turned more into a traditional bar space with a short and sweet entree menu, a rotating beer menu all from local breweries, and a daily desert. There was a small room, that used to be a coat closet, that Bilbo had turned into a Little Free Library / used book store.

The parking lot was already decently full when Fili pulled up.

Half of the space had been cleared of tables to create a make-shift dance floor (standard for Friday and Saturday nights) and there was something upbeat about rather being famous than dead pounding over the speakers. Bilbo had invested in a digital jukebox to help boost business post-COVID. Fili did not always love the music that the younger patrons picked, but if he really needed something a little more late-2000s, more punk, less pop, he could pay an extra fee and have his song bumped to the front of the list. 

Fili claimed a corner booth and ordered whatever was dark on tap for himself and an IPA for Isa. 

He drank is beer, ordered another along with some waters, and wait for Isa to arrive. He knew from experience that it could be a while. She said she was going to change and it really depended on how long it took her to pick a new outfit. 

Fili: I got a table. Corner near the door.

The college kid checked to see if Fili needed anything else and Fili waved him off saying that he was waiting for a friend. 

“I always forget how busy this palace gets on Fridays,” Isa said, sliding into the booth opposite Fili. “Don’t get me wrong. It’s a good thing, but… I’m just always surprised.”

Fili shrugged. “Makes it easy to talk without getting overheard.”

“That’s right,” she leaned closer, her bobbed dark curls falling forward, “You said something happened.”

Fili nodded and took a long drink, steeling himself to talk about this. He had learned to tease out the things that caused him any sort of distress rather than pretending that they did not exist and hoping that they would go away with time. 

“He’s back.”

“Who?” Isa asked, licking a bit of foam from her upper lip.

“Kili.”

Her dark brown eyes went wide enough that white surrounded her irises. “What?!”

“That was pretty much my reaction.” Fili drained the rest of his second beer. “On the inside.”

“I bet. Did he say why he’s back?”

“His dad died a few months back. He says he’s here to sort through his things.”

“And you don’t believe him?” 

“He hasn’t been back in over a decade, Isa.”

“Yeah. I see your point.”

“Plus he’s not just here for a long weekend or a week or two. He’s taken a job at the hospital.”

“Oh.”

“Yeah.”

“So he’s probably sticking around for a while?”

Fili ordered another beer when the waiter came around again. “That’s what I figured.”

Isa pulled a face. “How do you know he’s back?”

Fili snorted. “He ended up stranded on the side of the highway heading in to town. I stopped to help before I realized it was him.”

“Would that have stopped you?”

“No. Probably not,” Fili sighed. “It’s just,” he exhaled heavily through his nose. “It’s been a decade, you know? I figured that I’d done pretty much all I needed to do, everything I could do, to move on. And then there he was, standing in front of me, and I got those butterflies all over again like we were sixteen again for God’s sake.”

Isa reached out to rest her hand on his. “I’m sorry that this has upset you. Is there anything I can do to help? Other than listen, of course.”

Fili rolled his eyes, “I can hear the therapist talking.”

“Sorry,” Isa forced a scowl. “You should show him that you’re over him by…” she stopped and looked around the Green Dragon for the most attractive person, “taking that girl home,” she pointed.

“That’s Rosie Cotton,” Fili said with an amused smile. “She’s seventeen.”

“Maybe not her then,” Isa casts around for another candidate. 

“I see what you’re doing,” Fili said. “And, no, I’m going to do the well-adjusted healthy thing and go home by myself.”

“Good.”

“Besides, if you’re trying to pick the hottest person here, then you’d have to suggest yourself.”

“Flirt.”

Fili grinned.

“That’s good that you’re not even tempted.”

“I didn’t say that. I said I was going to be a grown up and not do the unhealthy thing. I make no promises about whether or not I look at porn when I get home.”

“Okay!” Isa exclaimed. “Too much information!”

“We’ve traded website recommendations.”

“I like to forget about that,” Isa sniffed.

“Yours were good. I still use them,” Fili teased.

“Moving on…” Isa nudged him. “So are you going to do anything about him being back?”

Fili pulled a face. “I don’t know. His car got towed to the shop and I’m working tomorrow morning, so I’ll probably see him when he picks it up, but he doesn’t have a way to get there so I might end up dropping it off at his place. Or… I don’t know, Isa.”

“I hear you.”

“Things ended so badly. We were both stupid. We both said things that probably hurt each other. I don’t remember things I said, but I remember things that he said. And I’m sure he remembers that last phone call. And everything that came before that.”

Isa frowned in confusion.

“I… I was not kind. And I hung up on him,” Fili stared down into the beer that had newly been refilled. “That was the night I got the DUI.”

“Speaking of that,” Isa said, “Just so this doesn’t have to come up later. Are you having another after that one? If so, I’m going to need your keys.”

Fili shook his head. “No. I shouldn’t even have this one, but I figured we’d be here for a while. I still have to hear about the Tinder boy.”

“In a bit,” Isa waved her hand.

“Like… how do we move forward from that? Do I apologize? Do I wait for him to apologize? Do we just pretend that none of it happened?”

“I think that depends on what you think your relationship with him will be moving forward.”

“Did I mention the butterflies?”

“I wouldn’t act like none of that happened then.”

“You’re right,” Fili sighed. He was silent for a minute. “So an apology. Then what?”

“I’d say just see where it goes. Time is what changes people. You’re not the same kid I met in State. I’m not the same girl. And I’m sure Kili isn’t the same either.”

“That could be a bad thing.”

“Or it could be a good thing. You said you got butterflies. Maybe he did too. Or maybe you can both be friends, neighbors, members of the same community without awkwardness.”

Fili snorted. “I doubt that last one.”

“You never know.”

“So tell me about Tinder Boy.”

“To start with the least problematic thing… he has / had a girlfriend …”

Fili drank his third beer a lot slower while he listened to the disaster that Isa’s date with Samuel the CPA had turned out to be. And it had only lasted fifteen minutes.

I try to keep an open mind because this site needs to make money to function and ads help but the wordpress ads getting out hand…

They absolutely are. Every time there’s a wa for them to make money they overcompensate and scoot themselves again.

Ad-free but you can still choose to see them for quirky stuff like pikachuman? Heck yea! Him being everywhere and having to scroll past 17 ads in a row? Go away.

Badges? Fun! Them being the reason pfp‘s might get deleted from reblogs? Absolutely not.

Tumblr Live? Ngl when it was new it sounded like it could be kinda fun! But everything that has been surrounding it so far from it being basically a whole different app to the snoozing to the forcefully placed button right in the middle so you can’t ignore it even if you wanna? NO.

And the thing is. The website doesn’t even function properly. How about fixing basic stuff like the SEARCH BAR instead of adding more onto it. Maybe that would actually help keep the Twitter users they’re after in.

I hate so many new features Microsoft made/windows made

Making it hard to make a local account

Microsoft online account so ingrained in everything I don't know when I'm online or not, saving to a shared drive somewhere or my ACTUAL COMPUTER, I never gave permission to back up my stuff on one drive or whatever but it sounds like it's auto doing it, what if I don't want tax forms and sensitive shit on there??

Microsoft office itself is a mess. Some initial nice additional tools, but now find/replace works worse, making pdfs/exporting gives me less setting control, it won't tell me what fonts are true type so I need yo go through 1600 pages and manually find chinese fonts and change them to a true type font after I already spent 4 hours testing and making pdfs to see WHAT fonts were even true types. So many basic features now have less access. Meanwhile editing is a fucking mess. I ONLY want to view my spelling errors, maybe grammar errors. I'm trying to speed proofread. I don't have time to see it suggest to reword writing from a fucking novel that was already purposely written as "probably harder" Stop telling me to delete probably. I had to go through 3000 "spell grammar check" today and a vast majority weren't real. It flipped out on Chinese so there's 1000 marked errors, and then on commas and ; suggestions which were wrong, and meanwhile I only wanted has/had misuses since I noticed this document had those grammar errors when reading. 90% of the errors shown to me I had to click ignore on because they aren't fucking errors. To use this for something professional I'd have wasted days slowly reading this stupid goddamn editor. And it only helped in that it highlighted some areas so I could notice have/had grammar stuff and go in and edit myself since it's suggestions on corrections were wrong. Fucking wanted 8 hours just to catch like 30 real mistakes in 1600 pages, making a few extra errors when I clicked its auto-correct too fast when Words correction was Wrong.

I wanna kill modern technology move to all online, on an online account tracking u through multiple systems, linked to Alexa and the Microsoft spying voice thing, where a fucking laptop won't even have full functionality unless ur on a logged in account tracked online. I liked fucking windows xp functionality just fine, it's all I needed, the app store is a nice add on but Jesus christ I just want to use my fucking computer and search my COMPUTER for my programs not all of online! I just want to be able to run basic fucking features and enjoy the speed of modern tech (since windows xp probably is way too small to run much anymore). I'm so tired Jesus. And if I, a computer degree fucker, am enraged and fucking exhausted, no wonder non tech literate people pick up a new computer or tech and deem it too confusing. It is. I feel like it's on purpose! To get fuckers to agree to all the "track you and your data and personal info" pop-ups, make it impossible to figure out how to opt out, make it easiest to agree and login and tie everything to something using you, make it hard for you to fix anything and hard for any feature to work so you buy new tech faster, so you waste more hours on their tech not knowing how to fix shit. I wanna steamroll Microsoft the entity I'm so godsamn tired.

i downloaded iOS 16 and macOS ventura on my phone and macbook respectively, so im here to share about some of the cool stuff!

ios:

the lockscreen is POGGERS, but i still have no idea how to put people in front of the font and stuff. i'll probably figure that out later, but i'm happy with this rn. the font options go from nice and aesthetic to slightly deranged, with weird numbers and all. the widgets were a good idea.

music player!!

the music player has two modes. one more compressed and compact:

and one more bigger zoomed-in version of the album art!

this is a really nice touch for people who are into album art and like seeing them, and the compact method works with those who want to be a little more private about what theyre listening to. theres also a little equaliser on the top right of the progress bar right next to the song title, which i think is pretty neat!

overall, the animations seem a lot more natural, and i really like that. it makes me feel more comfortable using my phone, and it feels as if it's brand new. this just shows how much software affects the experience, and apple outdid themselves this time. although, there are a few slight animation errors that i've already informed them about, so hopefully they do something soon.

the scrolling on the home page is almost the same as iOS15, but instead the dots at the bottom have a search function when the phone is still. i think for small handed people like me would be okay to use it, but i'm not really sure this function is needed since all we can do is just swipe down for spotlight.

but when we DO swipe down, there's a new animation that makes the search button at the bottom of the screen come up to be the search bar itself. pretty cool ngl

the fixed app row at the bottom of the homescreen seems even closer to the edge, either that or my eyes are failing me. there's no battery percentage yet, but hopefully the actually update has it :')

the hold picture thing isn't working for me as for now, but that's maybe bc i'm on an older phone. can beta testers who use newer phones tell me if it works on yours?

the fitness app was a good thing i feel. im always super unmotivated to exercise, so i think seeing the rings themselves can help me force myself to exercise everyday :D

stage manager actually boosted my productivity in class, a LOT. my moots know that we use our computers a lot in class, and stage manager helped me not only focus, but do my work more efficiently. i used to be a very everything-full-screen person. i would put all of my windows in full screen mode and travelling between them was a little bit torturous. but stage manager somewhat found a middleground for people who love full screen and minimised windows. they made it so that your current window was big enough to feel like it's full screen, but you still have the stage manager at the side for you to switch your windows whenever you want to.

however, it was a little difficult to navigate at first. i kept opening windows that i wasnt supposed to and i had no idea how to group tabs and separate them. hopefully the feedback i gave to apple will allow them to give more direct instructions on how to use the stage manager.

oh. that's pretty much everything. well for me at least, most of the update was an aesthetic upgrade, but self performance could also be boosted! i'm not sure about other features, but these few are the ones that really stuck with me!

Goddamnit I love this website and the people on it but holy crap what the hell is this Tumblr Live thing??? It’s not my place to say I hate it cause I have no interest in it but there’s two things about the presentation of it on the home menu I simply must rant about

So, I’m mobile. Permanently, unless it’s blog maintenance I only do stuff on mobile. And when you open the app the Live stuff takes up like half the screen, so you gotta scroll down to see what you actually want to. And the Search button is GONE. Instead there is only more Live BS. You have to tap a teeny tiny magnifying glass on the corner of Home to search anything. Which was a shame when I wanted to look up Guys and Dolls stuff earlier (more on that later, maybe lol)

Point is, I’m sure Live is fine, but when it comes to mobile they gotta fix the presentation of it. In what universe is a new feature more important than the freakin SEARCH FUNCTION???

as promised, an announcement about the technical state of the blog:

if you're looking to find specific things on the blog, you HAVE to use the tag system (a list of ALL tags can be found on the tags page or recipe tags page).

you CANNOT use the 'search' function to look for things, as it will always return no results every time. the way to tell whether you're using tags or search is that url will be url.tumblr.com/tagged/tagname rather than url.tumblr.com/search/searchquery.

if you're cursed enough to be viewing the blog on the mobile app on the tumblr.com/url format instead, you need to make your search in the search bar #tagname instead of 'searchquery' (ie: put a # in front of it, use dashes for spaces). i advise using a browser to view this blog rather than the app, however, and as i don't use it myself i can't offer any further help w/ navigating this blog on the app.

original posts from this blog also don't currently show up in the sitewide tag viewer or search function (by my own testing, anyway).

both of these problems are completely out of my hands and i cannot do anything about them. i don't know if the primary problem (broken search) is fixable, but i am pretty sure that it never resolves on its own, as i've seen users whose search function has been broken for years (and i've come across an increasing number of blogs with broken search, so i think the issue is getting worse).

i know that the second problem (not showing in the sitewide tags) is fixable as i know people who have had that issue and had it fixed after contacting support, but i sent a support request months ago to staff (about both the search and the sitewide tags problems) that hasn't been responded to, so for now the situation remains the same.

i'll be sending in another support request soon, but i'm not sure if i'll get results this time or not.

given tumblr's supposedly skeleton crew staff, they might be too busy to respond again anyway, and given the ceo's not very professional behavior (and an oblique threat to potentially shut down the site a few months for now), i'm not really sure if it's even practical to try to get fixed.

if thing stabilize again and i feel safe interacting w/ support, maybe. for now though i don't know when/if that will happen.

My parents woke my siblings and I up. We were all sleeping in our beds at our old house. None of our phone alarms had gone off that morning and since I was supposed to open the shop today at 8:30am and it was 10-something now, I was extremely late. I couldn't believe my eyes. I kept staring at the time on my phone, thinking if I stared long enough, it wouldn't be true. How can this be? I even tried to confirm what time it truly was by using google to search the time for my city. Maybe it was daylight savings and my phone hadn't registered it. Maybe all our phones had malfunctioned simultaneously. But I couldn't get the internet to load. My parents then revealed that the internet had stopped working in the night, and that's why none of our alarms went off. But that didn't make sense because even if the internet stopped working, that shouldn't affect the function of the alarm app.

I got up hastily and tried to get ready for work as quickly as I could. I tried to message my manager on Snapchat to let him know what was happening. But I couldn’t really get through to him properly, the internet was still lagging. I also had no time to properly explain anyway since I was rushing. I also felt embarrassed because my excuse for why my alarm didn't go off was shoddy at best. I just put my clothes on and that’s it. I didn't bother with the rest of my morning routine.

When I got to work, my colleagues were all there waiting for me and when I tried to unlock the door, my keys weren't working. My manager was there, in casual clothes, even though it was his day off. I was happy he was able to open the shop for me with his own key. But I don't know why he didn't just open as soon as he arrived since surely customers were waiting. Then while I was talking to him, I realised that AL was the one rostered on to open the shop today and not me in the first place. No one knew where she was.

When we got inside, the shop looked completely different to how it usually looks. Before I could start work properly, I really had to go to the toilet first. AB was in the bathroom. She was using it as a staff room and eating her lunch in there. I saw that half the toilet seat was missing and the pipes weren't connected properly. I needed help, I didn't know anything about plumbing. Thankfully AB got up to help me fix and connect everything and then she left so I could be alone, but the toilet still didn't work. When I did a test flush, water was spilling out everywhere. I thought to myself, it's no use, I would have to go to the chicken shop next door and use their bathroom.

On my way out, I found a toilet in the corridor. I didn't know it was even there since my workplace didn't look like how it usually looks. JN was standing beside the door, washing her hands in the sink, presumably from having just used it. I joked, there’s a toilet in here.... right? She said, yes just in there. But when I opened the door, it just opens into another hallway. I realised that I was really wasting time now, and that I really needed to open the shop for trading.

Then I was sitting somewhere. Was I on a train? I realised that my phone was actually AL's phone and that’s why no one knew where she was this morning. That's why no one could reach her. I only realised because as I was scrolling through, I couldn’t recognise any of the my usual apps. And then I came across all her selfies. But the phone case was definitely mine. Did we swap phone cases without realising? I had to figure out a way to tell her that I had her phone. I assumed it must mean that she had my phone, perhaps we had swapped at some point. But then I reached into my bag and pulled out my own phone. I had both hers, and mine. How was I going to be able to reach her?

Recently, I learned that I have ADHD.

Throughout my time in education, I regularly had issues with studying, revision, executive function and the like, but since I always achieved great grades, and always managed (key word: managed) to get things done, I never had much of a reason to look any further into the issues. However, because this approach of course didn’t address the actual issues, they continued to affect my everyday life and wellbeing (drastically), leading to me learning about ADHD masking, finding it echoes throughout my work and personal experiences, and then deciding I should read further. I now know that I have been experiencing ADHD burnout for the vast majority of my life.

So over the past week and a half (Thursday afternoon to the following Sunday), I took a short but actual break. No goals, no messages, no tasks, no interviews, no client work, no projects and no other predetermined or defined commitments. And I feel I learnt a few significant things in the time I spent resting and minutely ‘recovering’. In the following list I have detailed some of these insights (save for the real sad, melancholy stuff), in the hopes that I can keep these things in mind, and maybe also help whomever else reads this.

There are clear limits on how long, and how much, I can work in a week.

Ignoring your limits does not disappear your limits.

Domain-style planning (where you group tasks into like categories) is a big help, and limits the need to context switch.

Going outside for a walk will always solve at least one problem.

Prioritising rest has a huge net positive on my happiness.

Multitasking is a big stressor and is almost never necessary.

Reflection is good.

Wanting to be interested is not the same as wanting to be entertained, and neither are bad to want.

You can let people know what you’re dealing with. Their response does not change that fact.

You can set plans with others according to your own limits.

You don’t have to be good enough for others. You don’t have to be good enough for you to do the thing.

The more you do, the more options become available to you.

I feel and carry a lot guilt and shame around resting.

Intimacy is hugely and highly important.

I have been consistently coming up with what I refer to now as ‘product and project ideas’ since early childhood.

Sometimes it’s just stubbornness and pride that are in the way, and that’s all.

Everyone is hurt in their own ways.

The vast majority of people project in many ways, daily and multiple times a day.

I project and expect of people.

Front end code, particularly HTML and CSS, is really not that intimidating.

There is time.

The (social) internet makes time feel a lot faster than it is.

People can always see through try-hards and those rushing the process.
