Do you ever think about how Kirk had a "best friend" on the ship before Bones in Gary Mitchell, a man who:

a) deviously manipulates him into heartbreak for Mitchell's benefit,

b) shames him for not being "fun" enough when he's in a position of power,

c) openly insults intelligent and powerful women,

d) treats everyone cruelly as soon as he gets power and tries to seize everything for himself,

e) finds it fascinating that he can stop a person's heart for fun, and

f) tries to murder Kirk instead of admitting that he's a danger to the universe,

and then chooses to replace him with Bones, a man who:

a) tries to save Kirk from heartbreak at every opportunity,

b) gets him to smile and relax by being genuinely interested in how he's doing and telling him that he's great and respected just as he is,

c) openly toasts intelligent and powerful women,

d) treats everyone kindly as soon as he gets power and tries to use it to help as many people as he can,

e) cries about how people suffered when medical treatments were less advanced, and

f) says, "Jim, I can't destroy life, even if it's to save my own. I can't."

what makes me even more sick about “prime” spock being in AOS is that he first lost jim and later leonard which drove him to so much grief he ended up taking a suicide mission by trying to save romulus, that ended him stuck in a new timeline with younger versions of jim and leonard and his crew, his family. and he has to see them once again so young, navigating the same scenarios they experienced in TOS. and while prime spock is helping the AOS crew navigate them, it makes him want to reach out to his own family but they all are just… gone.

re-reading beamirang's Genesis-verse fics is so fascinating because there's a vast chasm between the stuff I know about Star Trek at 28 vs. the stuff I knew about Star Trek at 16 (when I originally read them) and I'm picking up on soooooo many things I didn't get the first time I read them

I loved this part in The Unsettling Stars. Dr. McCoy always gives 100%.

An AU of The City On The Edge Forever where everything is the same, except at the end, Kirk isn't able to grab McCoy in time. Thus, he saves Edith, but he gets hit by the car instead. He survives, but he is seriously hurt and has to be taken to an early 20th century hospital... AKA, his worst nightmare

So you have McCoy dealing with the horrors of 1930's medical care and his own recovery, while trying to grapple with finding out about why Edith had to die. Kirk has to figure out how to now keep the bad future from happening, as well as dealing with immense guilt that McCoy got hurt because of him. Spock has to deal with both humans emotional problems, a task that he finds... well, more overwhelming than he'd like to admit.
