I broke
40 days
That's how many days left until season 7 premiere of 9-1-1. Just 40 days until my blorbos come back from war.
And I couldn't hold out
We're at least 2 years away from season 3 of Good Omens and probably 9 months away from season 3 of Heartstopper. Yes I am doing splendidly thanks for asking.
I couldn't take it anymore and started a new show, my brain need a new hyperfixation
Like an idiot, I chose Hawaii 5-0 because what could be better than a 10 season show ?
I'm 10 minutes into the first episode and already I'm putting clown makeup on 🤡. I swear I cannot get my brain to quit shoving dudes together. I seriously think I'm just lowkey delusional at this point
It's honestly so embarrassing of me but also they are gay. Gay
Sorry, nothing could get you to stay to run this operation ? Not even a task force to find the man who killed your father ? Not free reign over EVERYTHING ? PASS ?
But a hot hunk of man point a gun at you and suddenly you're interested ? Something (someone) changed your mind ? Gay
Oh what's that ? He's blond and buff and competent ? Oh he's witty ? Oh he's also bratty and you want to push him against a couple different surfaces ? Gay
Oh you feel like he can step to you and he's not interested in buttering you up or listening to you but obviously still respect you? Gay
Oh he had your back and saved your life ?
And as the petty ass man you are you "appointed" him your "partner" ?
Shameful Mr.Mcgarret
Shameful
But also I woulda done the same
Now if I had a nickle for every show a hard, jaded brown hair brown eyes soldier was suddenly captivated by a blond bimbo (affectionate), I'd have two nickles (scratch that 4, forgot about GO and OFMD), which isn't a lot but it's strange that it's happened twice.
Anyway, imagine how unsurprised I was when I curiously looked on Tumblr to see if the two dudes from 5-0 was a hot item and saw this tag with thousands of people :)))
I guess this is my humble request for the McDanno fanbase to accept me as one of their own.
I promise to bring much delusion
Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

Thanks for answering my ask. If you don't mind me asking (again), can I ask, what are your top 10 (or top 7) favorite media (can be books/ manga/ anime/movies/tv series)? Why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before......Thanks....
Not at all!
Alright, top 10 favorite media...
1. Killer and Healer (cdrama)
I've explained many times why I love this drama and to sum it all up, it's one of the greatest love stories I have ever fucking seen in my life and they have set the bar too god damn high in terms of relationships, communication, everything
2. Lord of the Rings Triology Extended Edition (movie)
Can't go wrong with the Lord of the Rings. Love the Lord of the Rings. It's such a good movie
3. CSI: Miami (tv show)
My favorite of the CSI franchises. I've seen every season, and at least every episode at least twice (maybe more). I just really like police procedurals and this has always been one of my favorites
4. Percy Jackson (book series)
You cannot go wrong with the Percy Jackson series now, come on. It's fucking Percy Jackson.
5. The Kane Chronicles (book series)
Now this is also written by Rick Riordan but instead of Greek mythology, it's Egyptian mythology and as someone who wanted to study egypt mythology and be an Egyptologist when I was younger, this shit appealed heavily to me. Still does. Love this book series
6. NCIS: New Orleans (tv show)
Out of the NCIS franchise, I like this one the most. I think it has the best cast, the best cases...I don't know, I just like this one the best
7. Hawaii Five-0 (tv show)
I never got the hype when I lived in Hawaii (yes, I was born and raised in Hawaii, no I'm not military or a missionary kid, I was born there) but once I went to the mainland for school, I started watching it and I understand why everyone really liked it. Also McDanno...great couple. I love their relationship
8. HiGH&LOW: THE WORST X (movie)
My favorite of the HiGH&LOW movies. I don't know what it is about this one but it's just...it's just my favorite. I think the characters and the relationships were all great and it was able to build off of the previous movie HiGH&LOW: THE WORST. And most sequels don't really work but this shit worked. And it's good. And the fighting? I'm an action girlie and these movies have some of the best fight scenes like ever
9. The Fiery Priest (kdrama)
One of my first kdramas that I've ever watched and oh my god. It's both funny and serious and the concept of the whole drama is just hilarious. I have never cackled so hard while watching a drama before. Love this drama
10. Danger Zone (Tdrama)
Oh my god, this drama. Oh, it's one of the only taiwanese dramas I've watched but holy fuck is it dark. It's so good but it's so fucking dark. It's another police procedural but the relationships in the dramas are really good. But it is not a drama you watch late at night. It's not. But it's so good

When Cupid and Valentine work together
Or how they fell in love with an arrow through their liver.
Hi my friends, I'm here again with more McDanno observations.
This meta is linked to my previous observations from season 1 to 4 and you can find it here and here.
I'm gonna talk about season 5 and 6, and how I will present to you proofs that Danny is Steven's true love and how the Liver Transplant worked as the ultimate Cupid's arrow for these two.
Okay, let's start!
Say yes, say no
The first episode of season 5 begins with a young couple that find death, after the man asked the girl to marry him. A tragic marriage proposal, foreshadowing the failed attempt of Steve McGarrett to ask Cath to marry him.
At the same time the first episode talked about one stolen liver, that was about to be transplanted to an important attorney.
Steve got shot and Kamekona comes to visit, and Steve mentions that maybe next time he will get a mortal shot into a vital organ, as a joke, but is a prelude to season 6 finale.
Now, I want to talk 5x04. In this episode we met VALENTINE, an assassin, that had received a heart from a young, honest and kind man.
That transplant changed him into a new man, his words to Steve were very revealing. He said that kind of experience changed everything.
This is a very important foreshadow to the incoming lethal experience Steve will suffer in 6x25. Writers are pointing at the transplant like SOME VERY MEANINGFUL EXPERIENCE. THE TURNING POINT IN STEVEN AND DANNY LIVES.
But Also, naming that man with a transplant VALENTINE is the big subtext here. The liver transplant not just will change their lives for ever, but will bond them romantically. The sun and the moon are going to find each other for once! If you don't get this symbolism, go check my previous meta here.
Jumping to season 6, we will have so many episodes related to marriage, proposals and weddings. Is the season in which producers said STEVE WILL MEET THE LOVE OF HIS LIFE. Right?
In one of the episodes we have the visit of an old and well known retired police man who became a private detective. His POV narrates the story, and one of his quotes caught my attention, he says something like 'When Cupid makes a mistake, the consequences are disastrous."
Then, in the season we will have Catherine leaving, before Steve propose her to marry him. So, is not Catherine.
Which made me think this...
With Catherine leaving and breaking Steve's heart, and the oroginal McGarrett character at the beginning of season 7 saying that maybe she wasn't the one for him, gives us clues about CATHERINE NOT BEING STEVE'S TRUE LOVE. So she is not the one the producers were talking.
Then we have Lynn. Is a fresh girl, and Steve tries to drive her to the spot in the sea where his father used to bring him, but they ended going to where Lynn's grandfather always brought her. She looks perfect for Steve, but something is off, because things didn't worked in Saint Valentine, and then, we had 7x16 which was a real demonstration of who is Steve's priority (Danny) But I will talk about this later, in my next meta.
So, Lynn is not Steve's true love.
Then... Who is it?
Danny saved me
I want to point at the scene in Adam and Kono's wedding, the dance. Yes. Steve was dancing with Cath but then...
Subtex were telling us who will be Steve's true love. He left Cath and goes dance with Danny.
But there's this special episode in which Steve's aunt comes back with a boyfriend, and they decided to get married. Both of them with terminal cancer. And in the middle of their votes, the man says SHE SAVED ME. And how they met the love of their lives with death at their doors.
This is really meaningful and is talking again about the transplant, how Steve and Danny will bond romantically, through a deadly situation. Danny will save Steve, and they will fall in love, this time for real, without flirting games or doubts.
Steve starts to open his heart
The couple therapy in season 5 can be seen as something very hilarious, related to the famous couple crisis at their 5th anniversary. But is more than that. It really helped Steve to start to open his heart to Danny.
The mcdanno episode in which Steve tells Danny about his passion about playing the guitar, we saw him breaking a little fragile cat statue. Cat represents Steve, and how broken he will be after Cath will leave him.
But in season 6 we had a disastrous Saint Valentine, with couples fighting, including our romantic Danny, yelling Melissa was his priority, when she was not. First is Gracie and Charlie, and second? We know who is in the second place here. And he couldn't say the three words to her because he doesn't love her.
But this, i will talk about this.
Gif credit @mcdanno-fan-blog 👇
Tumblr media
In episode 6x08 Danny enters into the "flirting making Steve jealous" , this time using Hank.
Why? Because Steve has Lynn now, and Danny knows it.
So... This another scene...
Gif set credit @wildandwild 👇
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Danny compared him to Hank, and that's it for Steve. Steve goes on into "SO YOU LIKE HIM? WATCH ME GO INTO A DATE WITH SOMEONE."
And Danny is pleased.
You don't care, Danny, because you like Hank. Why would you care about who am I dating? And he says SOMEBODY here, genderless word. Bi subtex.
So, after this, we have these tow boys playing around again...
Gif set credit @indiguus 👇
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Both of these scenes in 6x09 and 6x10, the floating game started again. Immediately after Danny made Steve jealous of Hank because Steve started to date Lynn.
Lou is not amused hahahaaha.
To Conclude:
Season 5 spreads clues foreshadowing Steve's transplant in 6x25, but it also, together with season 6, showed Valentine and Cupid and "ROMANCE IS IN THE AIR, DANNY" to prepare the banquet for the McDanno final encounter through a liver.
Steve's true love is right in front of him, and the clues about who is it, had been shown clearly. Bullets and arrows through the heart!! In the whole season! And even Danny played archery in one episode. Time to put a love arrow in that liver, Danny.
Hope you like this meta, i will be back soon!

Things I’ve learnt while binge watching Hawaii Five 0 during lockdown...part 4
17.  Until this COVID19 enforced Hawaii Five-0 binge watching, I had only vaguely known Alex O'Loughlin as Holly Valance’s boyfriend
Forgive me - but I didn’t really make the link between this fairly standard shaggy haired Aussie male circa the early 2000′s....
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With this guy....weird, right?  Amazing what a decent haircut will do.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also - unlike say a Hemsworth, Bana or Crowe - his American accent is pretty decent.
18. The gag reels are to DIE For.
As with any great love affair/obsessive compulsive behaviour the research spiral is long and deep...this is my favourite combo of gag reels simply because it’s McDanno centric and for the ‘what’s the line, what’s the line, WHAT’S the line’ at 1:22, the commentary on the seatbelts at 2:45 and ‘Is there anybody out there? We’re going from the top yeah’ at 3:33.  Yeah, welcome to the rabbit hole.
youtube
There’s more here:
https://www.alexoloughlinonline.com/hawaii-five-o-blooper-and-gag-reels/
19. The show is 7 kinds of problematic - but I can’t stop watching it.
ASIDE:  My mother watches this show - and now, thanks to COVID19, I’ve turned into my mother.
How problematic is this show? So many dumb plots...
Tumblr media
I have to defuse this nuclear device to save the world - babe, strap a car battery to my chest for protection.
Tumblr media
A freakin Soviet submarine rocked up in HNL bay and only I can solve the crime and save international relations.
Tumblr media
I solved the unsolvable case from 1941 in a dream - and I was my grandfather????
Tumblr media
I rescued my Smol and friends by picking up the whole house with my helo.
But then, so many good episodes, that covered some important themes...
Tumblr media
Japanese Internment Camps during WW2
Tumblr media
Veteran’s return
Tumblr media
Hawaiian sovereignty
Tumblr media
Sex trafficking
So many stoopid characters...
Tumblr media
The follicly challenged recurring Sang Min - stoopid but enjoyable
Tumblr media
Kono leaves but this guy gets to see Season 10???? WTF Hirsch???
Tumblr media
These two - WHHHHHY???  So unnecessary and so poorly handled.
Tumblr media
This guy - ugh - JOE “I know all the secrets AND I’m not telling you for your own safety but I will say enough that you end up not trusting me and then I will tell you everything and die in your arms because your whole freakin life hasn’t been traumatic enough!’ WHITE. Ugh - the worst!!
And then not enough of these awesome characters....
Tumblr media
Can I have a whole show about Mary & Joan and how they come back to Hawaii and live with Uncle Steve and turn his life upside down?
Tumblr media
I kinda need the whole Navy dad and Nahele storyline like I need air to breathe - amiright?
Tumblr media
If we are having Mary & Joan then we need Bridget as well - and I love Missy Peregrym!  Are all Danno’s siblings taller than him?
Tumblr media
Steve should have got an Eddie in Season one!

I’m newish here and just getting to the end of s6 and Im beginning to understand the frustration I see on tumblr. 1. Danny’s not in half the episodes and the ones he IS in, he has his own plot line! 2. I love Lou, but he’s kinda serving as a replacement for Danny in the buddy-cop dynamic with Steve :( and 3. I felt like McDanno’s relationship was getting better and they were getting closer through seasons 1-3 but now it’s like they’re trying so hard to invent arguments and “dysfunction” ughhhhh
Yeah, Anon, that’s pretty much it, Scott’s situation is understandable by the vast majority here, that he wants to go back to L.A. for his family from time to time so he’s gonna miss some Eps, it’s hard when the plot was a good one and you just know that the Scene Steve does with Someone Else would be 500% Better/Emotional/Funnier if that was Danny there, it’s also hard bc not only Scott has 5-7 Eps missing, but on the rest of them, there’s also the ones where his participation/screen time is limited (same as Alex/Steve, specially on S9-10, but that’s for another topic).
(Ex: They filmed with him on the beginning, everybody at the Tech table, then when they get back there eventually to talk abt the progress of the case, he’s missing, and at the final scenes he’s there again just for closure; Another ex: When he films all separated like the Christmas Ep in 8x11; or ones where they film with him separated, like one where they all were in a bar after a funeral* and the camera changes to him there alone bc he obviously not filmed there with them that day.)
McDanno season 1-3 were Golden, that’s the truth here (for some it’s just S1 but it’s all good, compared to the rest anyway). S4-5 are nice, S6 we don’t talk abt it we just enjoy the McDanno moments it gave us, S7 things get better, S8 it gets even better but with also some bumps, first half of S9 is great, and everything starts to fall apart after that.
And I can’t say much abt the (c.)arguments, bc i for once love when they do that, forced or not (it actually hints some improvised lines I guess, like Alex and Scott knows the topic and just go on, stretching it, like Alex said once that they sometimes do when they think the arguing/bickering is too short/dry)
Thank you for the ask, anon, I know it can be frustrating sometimes but ever now and then we’re blessed with some scenes/moments at least that lifts us up and give hope too. Also, Alex is producer of the show too now, who knows what other changes he’s gonna bring to the show yet.

Hello I have a question for you! I know in the actual show it's impossible now, but do you ever see mckono as an actual couple? I ask because I just read your fwb fic and I see you put mcdanno as the main couple with mckono as not really a couple (in the past and really just fwb without feelings). You said you think they had a lot of chemistry together but do you think they could be an actual couple?
ABSOLUTELY.  ::cracks knuckles and takes a hearty swig of diet coke:: I’m glad you asked.
So, the FWB fic was a request (nothing inspires me more than people ASKING ME TO WRITE STUFF OMG seriously, what an absolute honor).  And I could totally see McKono as fwb in the early seasons -- the mutual youth and vitality, adrenaline based sexual tension, the mentor/apprentice dynamic, both of them with sexual energy to burn and a job that doesn’t really allow for dating, the commonality of risk-taking, high octane personalities -- and I wanted to honor the request of FWB but without making either of them *using* each other, but it being a mutual clinging together in desperation/attraction/chapter of life kind of thing.  So, I think they have *feelings* (I’m not done with the fic, that was a draft and there will be a couple more chapters, I think) but not necessarily romantic feelings.
I can also totally see a platonic, more sibling-like McKono -- where they love each other fiercely but not romantically.
That said . . . could they be a romantic couple?
YES.  I absolutely think McKono is both a delightful concept to play with in fandom AND could have been canon if TPTB had so desired.  And I’ve written several McKono pieces that go in that direction.
AND HERE’S WHY (not a comprehensive list)  All of this is my opinion/imagination/whatever so please, my beloved OTP McDanno friends, no offense intended.
1.  They are both really hot.  Like, really.  They are ridiculously attractive people.
2.  There was chemistry with both the actors and the characters, especially in the early seasons.
3.  Steve seemed smitten from the first meeting, tbh.
4.  Kono facing off against Sang Min in her underwear? (1.1)  And tied to a chair making eye contact with Steve, who swoops in (literally) and then they kick ass TOGETHER. (1.2) Yes, please.
5.  Steve taking out an intruder in his house that was coming up behind Kono -- the ruthlessness with which he dispatched him and THE LOOK that he gives Kono.  (1.9)
Tumblr media
6.  Kono takes out a lawyer/actually bad person, splintering a door in the process, just before Steve and Chin come running in -- as @flootzavut mentioned, Steve looks like he might want to throw himself at her feet (1.16)
7.  THE LOOK Steve gives Kono, his chin on his fist, after they rescue the teenagers (1.17).
Tumblr media
8.  THE HUGS OMG THE HUGS
Tumblr media Tumblr media
  THE WINKS
Tumblr media
WHEN THEY BOTH WERE ARRESTED

McDanno ask game❤️
I was tagged by the lovely @mcdannowave and @nade2308!! Thank you so much guys 😘
Rules: Just tag up to 5 people of your choice from the fandom to play!
Top 3 favorite episodes:
Season 4, episode 19: We have their first real “I love you”, and their little moments are just so amazing.
Tumblr media
Season 6, episode 11: Our guys just have so many good moments in this episode, and they are adorable while working on their relationship.
Tumblr media
Season 7, episode 8: I just love this episode so much. The wonderful “pick a base” line is there, and they look so much like a family with Grace!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Favorite McDanno moment: This was very hard to choose but this scene in season 3, episode 6 is truly amazing. Steve would not leave Danny’s side, and the hug after is so emotional and they love each other so much!!
Tumblr media
Best argument/cargument: The pilot!!! “Hey man, I’m sorry, okay? I said I’m sorry, sincerely sorry. That’s what I was trying to tell you. Last year, when this conversation first started.” (x)
Tumblr media

200 (so far...) reasons to ship McDanno. (Now updated with the season 8 reasons: 200 reasons, to celebrate the fact that with season 9 Hawaii Five-0 will reach the milestone of 200 episodes)
Hi! Today I bring a gift to the McDanno fandom, courtesy of a lovely fan I met on twitter, @elsitaa, who asked me for a little help on a very nice project she had: watch every episode of Hawaii Five-0 and write of a list of all the reasons to ship McDanno. Season after season, she sent me a list and, believe me, after seven season the list was VERY long, but we managed to sort-out all the reasons and pick those that seemed more important to us. Now the list counts 150 reasons to ship McDanno, but this is most of all a wish for the show to make this list much, much longer. Now, I’m posting the list for you, and you are absolutely welcome to comment on it, add your reasons to ship McDanno, if you don’t find them in the list, pick your favorite reasons on the list or even, if you have the skills, make a video about it: feel free to use the list. It’s really just a way to celebrate this wonderful story of love and wish it the best, happiest evolution.
REASONS TO SHIP MCDANNO (150, so far… here’s to many more!) (Now 200 reasons, updated with the season 8 reasons)
1. The first meeting: sparks flying immediately and, most of all, the fact that fate brought them to each other in the worst time of their lives to give each other a reason to be happy again.
2. Steve starting Five-0 because he found something, or better someone, in that garage: Danny Williams.
3. Carguments (lovers’ quarrels) since day one.
4. “Book’em, Danno”, a term of endearment.
5. Steve’s gift to Danny and Grace to spend some quality time together: three nights at the Kahala Hotel. Just the first of many gifts that show how much they care for each other.
6. “We are partners”.
7. Grace telling Steve her dad talks a lot about him. Steve being delighted about it.
8. Steve talking to the Governor to help Danny when Rachel threatened to bring Danny to court to change the custody deal so Danny couldn’t spend time with Grace.
9. “Maybe you are not as alone here as you think, Danno”.
10. “How long you two been married?”, something they have been asked a lot throughout the years.
11. “You miss me, don’t you?” “Oh, yeah, I wish you were here” … “Are you talking to your wife?” “I’m talking to my partner”.
12. Steve being next to Danny during the tough time of Meka’s death, helping him clear his name and going to his memorial service to comfort Danny.
13. That “I know you” that sounded a lot like Steve’s first “I love you” to Danny.
14. The intimacy suggested by things like Danny feeling at home when he’s in Steve’s house and by Steve driving Danny’s car even when Danny is not with him and almost every time when Danny is with him (which means that Danny picks Steve up every morning and changes seat so Steve can drive, just one of their many married couple habits).
15. “I picked you, didn’t I?”.
16. Calling each other “Babe”, “Baby” and other cute or funny nicknames they use only for each other.
17. Following each other no matter what, no matter the risks, no matter the costs.
18. Repairing the Santa suit together and setting up a nice Christmas party for Grace.
19. Worrying for each other, being always protective, sometimes overprotective, of each other.
20. Always thinking about each other when they’re in danger or right after a dangerous situation. The first thing they do in these situations is calling each other’s names.
21. They love spending time together, watching TV series, movies, going out, staying home… everything is good as long as they do it together.
22. No matter what they’re doing, they always find time for each other.
23. Steve has a “face”, Danny has a “tone”, they know each other so well they can read each other even when words are not involved.
24. Steve took Danny on the first ride on his dad’s car (such an important thing for him).
25. Steve lied to the FBI for Danny so he could get to Matt on his own.
26. Steve needs to know every last minute detail of Danny’s life, and so does Danny about Steve.
27. Steve takes Danny for a hike to a special spot where he used to go with his dad.
28. They care for each other more than they do for themselves.
29. Danny drawing a heart in the air to tell Steve he loves him.
30. Steve being simply terrified when Danny gets exposed to sarin.
31.Steve picking up Grace – who calls him “Uncle Steve” - from school to take her to the hospital to see her dad. The way they looked like family in these scenes.
32. “You know, uh, we have become very close” and their hug after Danny gets released from the hospital.
33. “My eggs? You love my eggs”, which means that Danny cooks breakfast for Steve.
34. Danny chose to stay next to Steve even if Rachel was waiting for him at the airport with Grace and pregnant with his baby. Danny makes Steve his priority and this is something absolutely new for Steve.
35. “I’m gonna get you out of this thing” and he does, helping Steve getting out of jail and clearing his name.
36. “You're not wearing a tie, it suits you”, Steve loves Danny is not wearing a tie because it’s a sign he feels at home in Hawaii.
37. Steve always tells Danny what a good dad, cop and man he is.
38. They are jealous of each other, sometimes they show it, sometimes they try to hide it. “Try” being the keyword here. They just forget how to be subtle when it comes to each other.
39. Steve is incredibly protective of Danny’s kids. Danny knows that very well and trusts Steve to love them as much as he does.
40. Steve let Danny crash in his house for more than two weeks and wanted him to stay even more so he gave him a pair of headphones to help him with his insomnia.
41. “I’ll think about you all the time”: Danny being the one to find Steve after being tortured by Wo Fat.
42. Steve and Danny looking at Charlie through the glass. The way Steve looks at Danny in this scene, with so much love. They don’t know yet that Charlie is Danny’s son, but it’s sweet to think they both were there, sharing this important moment.
43. The incredible intensity of Steve’s emotions during the whole episode where Grace got kidnapped.
44. Danny taking care of Steve’s house when he was away for his reserve drill.
45. “I’m happy when I’m not with you” “That’s a lie too, you love me”: absolutely no denial coming from Danny.
46. “I’m gonna be your marriage counselor” - Tony Archer, yet another person who notices how married they are.
47. That whole “Surf buddies” scene, how much they looked like a couple and the way Mary teased them about that.
48. Steve’s “Dear Danno” letter when he left for Japan.
49. Danny worrying for Steve the whole time he was in Japan (“like a cheerleader's father on prom night”).
50. Danny having a key of Steve’s house, spending the night there when Steve was in Japan, trying to figure out where he is and how to help him.
51. Danny’s reaction when Steve finally called, his relief and the fact he could feel just from Steve’s voice that he was stressed out, the way he can’t wait and urges Steve to come back as soon as possible.
52. Danny threatening the CIA guy and warning him not to cause any harm to Steve: “Listen to me… if anything happens to that plane, I promise you I’m gonna find you and I’m gonna kill you”.
53. “Your problems are my problems”.
54. The fact that after coming back from Japan Steve will always tell Danny about all his plans and his movements, because he doesn’t want to hurt him and make him worry.
55. Danny referring to his and Steve’s relationship as “our marriage”: “Over the years our marriage has become predictable”.
56. Steve took Danny fishing to a secret place where he used to go with his father. He refused to tell about that place to anyone else.
57. Cuddling on the couch, watching “The Notebook”.
58. “Steve, get out of here” “Forget about it”: Steve refusing to leave Danny in episode 3.06, willing to die with Danny if the bomb exploded.
59. “If something happens to me I need you to take care of Grace”, probably the highest proof of trust Danny could ever give to Steve.
60. The hug after the bomb got defused and the way Steve looks at Danny after that, when he leaves to go to the father-daughter dance.
61. Danny taking Steve to his daughter camping trip. Again, another of the many occasions they totally look like a family.
62. “Kelly your dads are here to pick you up”: Steve and Danny being totally fine with people thinking they’re a couple.
63. “You, uh, you look, uh, very nice-- suit and tie; that's good.” “It's for you. Wore it for you” Steve wearing his dress blues just for Danny, Danny fixing Steve’s tie for him.
64. “Thank you very much for being here. It means a lot”: Danny thanking Steve for being there for Danny for Grace’s custody hearing.
65. “He's my friend, he's my close friend-- and, uh I've seen him with his daughter. He's a great father. He's actually the kind of father we all wish we had”.
66. The fact that they trust each other since the first day and never betrayed that trust.
67. Steve and Danny wanting to go to Pro Bowl together, Danny turning down the chance to meet one of his favorite players because Steve hurt his shoulder and Danny needed to be with him.
68. “How’s my boy?”: the way they call each other “my boy” multiple times.
69. Steve surrendering to the terrorists only when they held a gun against Danny.
70. “I have your back, always”.
71. Training Grace’s softball team together: “We love Uncle Steve very much, right?”
72. “You gonna get an evidence bag, or are you gonna put that thing on?” Just one of the many times they shamelessly flirted with each other.
73. Steve and Danny’s time with Steve’s niece, Joanie, especially the scene where Danny tells Joanie a fairy tale that has as main characters Steve and Danny (and we so hope their fairy tale will have the happiest ending ever!)
74. Talking to the phone about Danny’s dad’s middle life crisis like a married couple and then Steve asking the Governor, thinking it was Danny, “What, did you forget to tell me how much you miss me?”.
75. Danny being there for Steve when he finds about aunt Deb being sick.
76. The many ways they prove there’s nothing they wouldn’t do for each other, to protect each other, to be there when the other needs help, support, comfort. Their matching scars are probably the most beautiful proof of what they’re willing to do for each other.
77. “There’s the guy I know and love”.
78. The way Steve screams Danny’s name after the building collapses in 4.19, one of the many times they prove they can’t bear the thought of losing each other.
79. The way Steve helps Danny with his wound and getting through his panic attack.
80. “I really, really, from the bottom of my heart, hate you so much” “I love you too, pal”.
81. “When we were in there, you said, uh you know, before you did the thing with the bomb, you said what you said. I want you to know, I I feel the same way.” “How is that exactly?” “Gonna make me say it? Come here. I love you.” “I love you, buddy”: the mutual I love yous and their hug after they get rescued.
82. Danny going to Afghanistan for Steve when he got kidnapped by the Taliban.
83. When in Afghanistan, even if Danny tends to imagine the worst scenarios happening, he just knows Steve’s alive: “Because I know him, trust me, he’s alive”. Like for many other things, Steve is Danny’s only exception.
84. Danny is the first thing Steve sees when he wakes up.
85. Danny refusing to leave Steve’s side: “No, no, I’m gonna stay right here with him”.
86. “Why are you looking at me that way?” “I can’t believe you flew all this way”. Steve’s disbelief every time he realizes the lengths Danny is willing to go for him, he’s not used to feel this important for someone, to feel he’s a priority in someone’s life.
87. Going to couples therapy together.
88. Steve knowing the exact amount of time he and Danny have known each other.
89. Danny pulling Steve’s wheelchair at the end of episode 5.01, like the caring husband he is… just one of the many caring attentions they have for each other.
90. Steve being there for Danny during the whole Matt situation, the “that’s why I love you buddy” scene in 5.04.
91. Steve needing to be there for Danny and to comfort him after they found out Matt was dead, the phone call scene when Danny was in New Jersey with his family and the scene on Danny’s special spot when Danny came back.
92. The AU episode, that proved how special Steve and Danny are for each other in any universe.
93. The rescue scene, Danny’s fear, then his relief. His sweetness through the whole scene, the way he comforted Steve.
94. All the coupley things they do together, like sitting next to each other at Aunt Deb’s wedding, buying a Christmas tree together, spending the holidays together and many, many more things.
95. Steve training with Grace and talking about how Danny will be as an old man, this is a thing Steve frequently does, he’s sure he and Danny will grow old together.
96. “You’re a half-baked cookie. Soft, gooey on the inside…That’s why I love you, babe. You, uh, like fixing broken toys”, one of the most beautiful declarations of love they shared.
97. The stakeout episode, especially Steve opening up to Danny about the panic attack he had when he was about to play the guitar in front of a room full of people and Danny buying a guitar for Steve so he’ll get to play that song he never got to play.
98. Danny hands himself to the Colombians to protect Steve, who was there with him when he killed Reyes. Steve asks to go through all this with Danny, but Danny doesn’t let him and asks him to be there for Grace.
99. “You have to believe in your father. Your dad, he’s the best man I know, and everything he does, he does to protect the people he loves… I promise you, I promise you kid, I’m gonna bring Danno home”, a promise that he keeps.
100. Steve is the first person Danny talks to as soon as he knows the truth about Charlie being his son. Steve supports and encourages Danny through it all.
101. The way Danny lets only three people in the world call him Danno: Grace, Charlie and Steve.
102. Danny trying to protect Steve from being hurt by Catherine, he wants him happy and doesn’t want him to get hurt. The same way Steve can’t stand the idea of Rachel hurting Danny… most of all, Steve and Danny want each other’s happiness. In a wonderful deleted scene of episode 1.24, when they talk about Danny’s relationship with Rachel, Steve says that perfectly: “I don't want you to get hurt, okay? I just want you to be happy, Danny, that's all."
103. Danny and Steve saving everybody and each other once again during the nuclear bomb emergency, talking again about spending the rest of their lives together (“looking at your bald head for the rest of my life”), that’s something they say frequently (“I'm gonna have to listen to this for the rest of my life, aren't I?), it’s like they just know they’re going to be together forever).
104. Steve and Danny dancing together during Kono and Adam’s wedding.
105. Steve being always there for Danny and Charlie during the medical procedure to save Charlie.
106. Steve always thinking of ways to make Danny happy, for example getting him Jerry Rice’s autograph, but it’s a pattern he follows many other times, when something good happens he always needs to share it with Danny.
107. Danny being unable to say I love you to Melissa, because when he says that he needs to really mean it… and he says it all the time to Steve.
108. Danny saving Steve’s life when they’re undercover and Steve gets shot, landing the plane on the beach and then giving half of his liver to Steve. The super emotional scene of the transplant, with “Stand by me” playing the whole time.
109. Steve realizing what Danny did for him after the transplant and Danny saying he needed a new liver, so of course he gave it to him. It’s clearly an incredibly big gesture, but for Danny is just something natural, of course he would do anything for Steve.
110. Steve thanking Danny for what he did for him, touching his heart to show how he feels, because probably words aren’t enough. The way they say I love you to each other and Steve finally following Danny’s advice to take some rest because he needs it and Danny is worried for him.
111. Danny asking Steve how he feels when they get back on a helicopter for the first time after Steve got shot and almost killed. Just another proof of how careful Danny is and how he can read Steve even when he doesn’t say or show how he feels.
112. The way they care about each other all the time and want to stay always in touch when they’re not together, they seem to spend a lot of time on the phone when Danny is not in Hawaii.
113. All the ways Steve proves he loves Danny’s kids as if they’re his own. One of the most beautiful scenes is the reunion with Grace in the winter formal episode.
114. “I’m so happy to see you right now, I’ll give you a hug, I’ll give you a kiss, pick a base”, the way they hug each other, like a family.
115. Bridget telling Steve Danny talks a lot about him and that their mother thinks Steve is a great catch... but Bridget is already married, so she must think Steve would be a great catch for Danny. A good mother always wants the best for his son, right?
116. Steve getting Danny to touch him on his lower back to prove his point about Bridget’s colleague… they touch each other all the time, so what does that mean, Danny?
117. Steve telling Danny he knows what he means when he talks about having feelings for your partner.
118. “You don’t have to dance with me tonight”, again, so much flirting all the time.
119. Danny knowing Steve so well he can read his body language perfectly: “Oh, you know your boy well”.
120. The way they struggle to be romantic and spontaneous with their girlfriends, but not with each other, that comes perfectly natural.
121. Steve and Danny looking like a couple during the whole “staycation” episode, much more than they do with their girlfriends.
122. Steve needing to tell Danny he loves him in case things go wrong with the dirty bomb.
123. Steve comparing his relationship with Danny to the relationship Danny had with Rachel when they were married.
124. Steve asking Danny to call his restaurant Steve’s, so they will always be together (My wish is that they’ll decide to call it McDanno’s, or something that addresses both of them anyway).
125. The way Steve looks at his Ohana, but especially at Danny, when he’s worried after talking to Lou about the fact that the bomb was meant to kill the team. This scene, like many others, shows Danny is the most important person for Steve.
126. Steve being against the idea of Danny and Rachel getting back together (the way he says “no!” when Harry asks Danny if he’s thinking of getting back with Rachel).
127. Steve and Danny preparing Charlie’s room together.
128. Steve always implying that he wants to be part of Danny’s retirement plans, whatever they are.
129. Steve telling Charlie his dad built his bed for him. “Danno is the greatest” “He really is the greatest, isn’t he?”
130. “Race in the morning?”, Steve asks Charlie, which means he’s going to spend the night at Danny’s.
131. Steve gave Danno a home, Danny gave Steve a family, episode 7.23 is another wonderful proof of that and how much they’re meant to be together, it’s like the universe conspired to bring them together.
132. “I’m very overprotective”, Danny says, and that’s true: he’s overprotective when it comes to the three most important people in his life: Grace, Charlie and Steve, his family.
133. Steve tells Danny his relationship with Rachel is not healthy, he sounds angry and jealous, but most of all worried about Danny.
134. Steve buying a chef’s hat for Danny and telling him before he jumps on the truck.
135. Danny is touched about the gesture but is also worried because Steve’s plan is reckless, and he tries to express how he feels wishing Steve good luck and telling him he’s going to be there when he’ll open his restaurant, he’s not going to die.
136. The way this exchange: “Thank you for the hat, seriously” “You’re welcome, seriously” felt like an exchange of I love yous.
137. “The last thing on earth I want to do is hurt your feelings”.
138. Leaving the scene together, hugging each other, they’re not afraid of showing their affection for each other in front of other people.
139. The whole scene at the end of the episode, where Steve tells Danny about his health issues, tells him “I love you”, and Danny is just there, speechless, because he’s too scared and worried for Steve.
140. Danny’s always comparing Steve with James Bond or some superheroes, because that’s the way he sees him.
141. They’re each other’s medical emergency contact.
142. They met each other’s family members, all of them who recognize their bond and seem to be aware of their feelings for each other.
143. They’re basically co-parenting Grace and Charlie.
144. There’s no personal space between them.
145. They always touch each other, sometimes it’s like they don’t even realize that, because it’s something that comes so naturally.
146. The way they look and smile at each other.
147. They’re frequently in sync when they talk, move, think.
148. They always prove the love they have for each other, with words, but most of all with facts and gestures.
149. Everybody knows.
150. They know, too, they just have to admit it and finally give themselves a chance to be happy together.
Sooo, Elsita and I updated this list, adding all the reason to ship McDanno season 8 gave us, we chose to make this a list of 200 reasons, and the number is evidently not casual: we want to celebrate the fact that, with season 9, Hawaii Five-0 will reach the milestone of 200 episodes. May the future episodes be wonderful and make us McDanno shippers happy... may they make Steve and Danny happy, together!
151. “You keep saying "we”. Who you talking about? Who's the "we"? Us?”
“We. Us. We. I'm asking you to be my partner in this restaurant.”
“You want me?”
“What, do I gotta spell it out? Yes.” Every important, meaningful part of Danny's life, every project, every thought and hope about the present and the future, is indissolubly tied to Steve. Just as much as every important, meaningful part of Steve's life, every project, every thought and hope about the present and the future, is indissolubly tied to Danny. They chose to work on a dream, together, a life project that takes time, effort, patience, love. And they’ll do amazing things together.
152. The restaurant started as Danny’s dream, but, once Danny asked Steve to be part of it, Steve was fully in, it became their dream, and Steve started to refer to it that way: “our dream”.
153. Steve was the one who signed the commercial lease agreement, he put all his mind and heart, enthusiasm and hopes in this project. With their combined efforts and all this love as foundation, it will be a success for sure.
154. Their smiles, their eyes full of dreams, the way they hold each other’s hands so tightly as they think about their future together and start to make it real.
155. Steve’s words: “I believe in you, I believe in us and it’s all that matters. Right?”. They have their skills, their passion, their love. They have each other. There’s nothing they can’t do, as long as they’re together.
156. The way Danny talks to Tani about Steve is simply one of the most beautiful declarations of love ever. Every word is full of pride, admiration, gratitude, love.
157. Steve and Danny are two “sensitive flowers” and they love each other because of that.
158. Steve comparing being partners to being married: “You asked me to be your business partner. It's like a marriage. It's gotta be 50/50 if it's gonna work.”
159. The super domestic scene where Steve and Danny discuss Steve adopting Eddie. Danny feels so much part of Steve’s house, he knows Steve’s favorite cereal bowl, Steve cooks and sets the table for two. You can feel Danny belongs to that place as much as Steve, and the same things goes for Danny’s place: it’s not just Danny’s home, but also Steve’s.
160. The way they can’t help smiling when they see the “McDanno’s” t-shirts brought by Kamekona, even if they don’t fit the classy ideas they have in mind for the restaurant, but that logo, that name… how can you resist?
161. “The constant bickering you two engage in. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's clearly coming from a place of love. That's why you're going into the restaurant trade together. Can't bear to be apart, right?”. Like the observant man he is, Harry immediately understood why it’s so important for Steve and Danny to work on this dream and achieve it together: they can’t even consider not being part of each other’s life, not getting to spend every day next to each other, doing something they love together, like they did since they met each other and like they plan to do in the future.
162. Danny keeps wearing the chef’s hat Steve bought for him, it certainly holds a special value for him.
163. The way Steve texts Danny to tell him about what happened to Toast, the way Steve smiles when Danny calls Hawaii “home”.
164. The way Danny shows up at Steve’s on Halloween, planning to scare him by wearing a mask, the fact that Grace left a pumpkin at Steve’s in case some kids showed up… they created their own traditions, they are a family,
165. Danny going to Steve’s place in the morning, finding him swimming with Eddie, the way Steve tells Eddie to shake to get Danny all wet, the way they smile at each other, the way they laugh together.
166. After Steve told Danny he got diagnosed with radiation poisoning, Danny got so worried he couldn’t stop thinking about that, he did some research, he studied and wanted Steve to listen to all the things he found out, he organized an intervention to insure Steve would take those advises more seriously.
167. Later, in the same episode, Danny opens up his heart even more: ““I lay up at night, I’m sick about it. I can’t sleep”. The things he says, the way he says them, so much love in every word.
168. The way Steve immediately notices when Danny tries to change his attitude and simply hates it, because he wouldn’t want Danny any other way, he thinks he’s perfect just the way he is. “Please, whatever she said to you, don't do that. Don't change. I love you, man, the way you are.”
169. The way the dialogue at the end of episode 8x06 is a beautiful declaration of love, with so many things unsaid, so many ways to say “I love you” even without actually saying so, and that goes for many scenes between them: every word, every gesture, every moment they’re there for each other… they keep saying “I love you” all the time, they keep proving it, all the time.
170. Lou telling Steve: “why don’t you listen to your boy, you know he loves you”. Like everyone who knows them, Lou knows how much Danny loves Steve and cares for him, and vice versa.
171. The way Steve manages to always talk about Danny even when he’s not there, like when he talks with Adam once he’s back in Hawaii.
172. The way they totally look and sound like a couple in episode 8x08: “I got you, babe”, “Were you worried about me, Danny?”, “Thank you, I love you”.
173. The way they walk arm-in-arm at the end of the same episode, it makes you think also about the end of episode 7x25. Love how comfortable they are with each other even when they’re in public.
174. The way Steve looks at Danny and softly touches him while he suffers the effects of the virus, the way he takes care of him.
175. The way Danny is the first one Steve looks at as soon as the antidote is in his hands. Danny always comes first, he’s his priority.
176. The fact that when Danny says “I want to tell you something, I want to talk to you…” and Steve stops him, it clearly makes you feel as if they were going to confess their feelings to each other, but they don’t want to do that because they don’t want to think it’s over (and they’re right about that) and they’re still scared…
177. When Danny dreams about the restaurant, Steve is the one who tells him: “Grandma Williams right now is smiling down on you, boy”, such a beautiful, touching line, full of the emotions and so meaningful. With that line, Steve explained things so well: this dream is rooted in Danny’s past, in those sweet, loud memories, in those handed down recipes, is anchored in Danny’s present, the way he loves now, the man he became, is anchored in Steve, who shares this dream with him, is projected in the future, their future.
178. Steve is also the one who tastes Danny’s recipe (Danny feeds him in such an intimate gesture), and we all know why Danny had Steve try the recipe: because his opinion is the one that matter the most for him.
179. When Steve comes in the kitchen he says there is “another full house”… yes, our pessimistic Danny is no more pessimistic: in his dream the restaurant is a big success. Deep down, he knows that he and Steve, together, are capable of accomplishing anything.
180. That “Serve ‘em, Danno”. If we think that at first Danny pretended he didn’t like to be called that, because it was just something between him and Grace … now, it keeps being something between him and the three most important people in his life: Grace, Charlie and Steve.
181. In Danny’s dream, Grace and Will’s wedding takes place at Steve’s house. Truly heartwarming detail.
182. Danny also dreams about Charlie graduating at the police academy. When Steve says Charlie told him he’s his role model and Danny protests a bit… that’s actually Danny’s thought, let’s not forget that everything in these dream scenes comes from Danny’s mind and heart: he thinks Steve will be Charlie’s role model, he has no doubt about it. He knows Charlie will become the man we saw in this scene because of him, but also because of Steve. And that’s one of the greatest proof of trust and esteem Danny could ever give to Steve, along with that “If something happens, I need you to take care of Grace”, back in episode 3x06.
183. The fact that Steve and Danny wear matching crazy colorful socks in Danny’s dream… a sign, maybe?
184. Danny imagining Steve and himself as old men in a scene that suggests they will live together at some point.
185. He imagines his granddaughter wanting to become a cop, asking him if he would change anything about his life. He imagines himself telling her he wouldn’t change anything. He wouldn’t change anything about that life that brought him to grow old with Steve.
186. There’s a light that hides Steve’s ring finger in the one moment where we could see. Maybe Danny is still afraid of giving a name, a definition, to what he feels and what all these things he dreams mean?
187. The fact that in Danny’s dreams there aren’t any girlfriends or wives, just him and Steve. No need for anyone else when you found your perfect match, your soulmate, right?
188. Steve operating on Danny and saving his life. A good way to thank him for giving him half his liver, don’t you think?
189. Steve referring to the procedure saying “if I didn't put my finger inside of you, we wouldn't be having this conversation right now…”… everyone seems to catch the double meaning… everyone but Steve and Danny, of course!
190. The way Danny added Steve’s stocking to his and his children’s ones, one of the many things Danny does to make Steve feel like he belongs - something that Steve craved his whole life.
191. Danny didn’t add a stocking for Melissa. Later in the season we will have Steve saying he’s still keeping things casual with Lynn… they know these women for years now, but they never made things more serious, they’ve never made them truly part of their life. Why? Deep down they know those relationships are not meant to be? Those relationships don’t make them truly happy? There are no commitment issues, just look how committed Steve and Danny are to each other…I simply think Steve is not in love with Lynn, Danny is not in love with Melissa… and all four of them deserve much more than that. And I honestly think I don’t need any shipper goggles to see what’s objective: Steve and Danny deserve to be together, they’re meant to be together, they’re in love with each other and the fact that they are two men shouldn’t make any difference.
192. How comfortable Steve is, with his sweatpants and no shoes, it makes you think that he’s going to spend the night - it’s Christmas Eve - and be there, on Christmas morning, to open the gifts with Danny and the kids.
193. The way Steve moves around Danny’s house, like he truly belong there… he takes the cookies, pours himself a glass of milk, takes off his shoes… he knows where Danny keeps his emergency key… all of this, because Danny lets him feel like he owns the place, he told him where to find the key… he might as well give him one... well, they might as well start living together, right?
194.  When it comes to think about an ideal fairytale or the story of a Christmas miracle, Steve is always the hero Danny thinks of. Think about it: Danny, the guy who used to always think about the worst case scenario, who thought is not in his DNA to be happy, the guy who, as a kid, if his parents were late coming home, begged God not to take his mom, because he couldn’t live without her, the guy who, on his wedding day with Rachel, could only think of the day she would get him divorce papers… That very man feels just the opposite way when it comes to Steve. When it comes to Steve, In Danny’s mind and heart, they’re both the unconventional princes of a super unconventional fairytale, the not so perfect but so good heroes of a Christmas miracle. When it comes to Steve, Danny believes in the possibility of a happy ending, one that sees them growing old together, making something they love, being happy, successful, fulfilled, together.
195. “Don't let that old curmudgeon fool you. This is his home. He's never gonna leave here.”
“Oh, he's not gonna leave here because he doesn't want to leave here or because you're not gonna let him?”
“Both.”: This is what happens when you really love someone. You don’t leave them, and they won’t let you leave.
196: Steve reassuring Danny when he has some doubts about the restaurant: “it’s gonna be awesome, all right?” Yes, it’s going to be awesome, guys.
197. Steve’s reaction when Uncle Vito tells him about the man who shot Danny: Steve’s strongest emotions are always related to Danny… always.
198. At the end of episode 8x22, while Tani talks and says: “… there’s someone out there that supports you. That loves you. Somebody who’s on your side …” we see Steve and Danny working together at the restaurant. Why do I say this scene is so like them? Because these two may not talk much about love, they rather show love, they rather prove love. And they do it every single day, since the first day, and they plan to do so for the rest of their life.
199. The way Steve says “take your shirt off” to Danny in episode 8x23: Basically what we get from this scene is that when Danny protests too much all Steve has to do is to tell him to take his shirt off and Danny complies ;) All the tension and the touching in this scene.
200. Looking at the whole season 8, Steve and Danny faced and overcame many obstacles, each one of these steps will lead Steve and Danny to realize their dream together, each hurdle overcome together will make their success even more significant and valuable. It all comes down to what Steve said in episode 8x01: Steve said in 8x01? “I believe in you… I believe in us … and that’s all that matters”. I believe in them… and I hope you do, as well, because that’s that kind of love and hope that makes great dreams come true.

“Triple Banana, Bitch”: Or, McDanno and the Challenge to Heteronormativity
Tumblr media
1. Introducing the Case
[1] Imagine a TV show where two co-workers/friends survived being trapped under a collapsed building and Person A sustained some pretty severe injuries. While trapped, the Person B says “I love you” to them. They are eventually rescued, and the following conversation ensues.
A: When we were in there, you said ah, y'know before you did the thing with the bomb, you said what you said ... I want you to know, I feel the same way. B: How is that exactly? A: You're making me say it? (B gives A a look.) Come here. (They hug.) I love you.
Now imagine a couple years later, a mutual acquaintance, Person C, is listening to them discuss Person A’s ex’s upcoming divorce.
B: What about therapy? It worked for us. C: You two lovebirds have a therapist? A: (Incredulous scoff.) Yes, we have a therapist.
Around the same time, imagine the couple arguing because Person B found out that Person A had been thinking about retirement without consulting Person B.
B: You didn’t feel the need to include me in the decision for you to retire. I trust you to bring me into big decisions like that.
You’d probably think that was a romantic couple, wouldn't you? They got together, they expressed their love after a traumatic event forced them to, they’ve worked at their relationship, they still have spats over things like major life decisions.
What if I said that Person A is Detective Danny Williams and Person B is Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett of Hawaii Five-0?
2. Maybe It’s A Joke
The thing about Hawaii Five-0 is that they treat Steve and Danny as if they are the lead couple.
And I don’t mean this in an “if one of them was a woman, they’d be together” kind of way, but in a “sometimes you forget they aren’t actually a married/romantically involved TV couple” type of way. In the Season 7 finale, there was a moment where I honestly was confused why Steve didn’t give Danny a kiss before leaving his office.
It’s intentional, maybe not to the extent that I see it. It started out in a wink-wink-but- clearly-a-joke sort of way. Both friends and strangers referred to them as a couple very early on in the show. But, unlike some shows, there haven’t been “no homo” responses (and none as far as I know from the actors). Maybe a little incredulity from Danny on occasion, but that is his response to teasing in general.
In S1E4, Steve is playing basketball against a guy in prison to try and get information out of him. Steve yells at Danny to shut up to try to get him to stop heckling him. The prisoner he’s playing against asks, “How long you two been married?” No reaction from either of them.
In S1E7, Steve is in a hostage situation while Danny is in the perp’s house. They’re on the phone, and Danny—who looks around to make sure no one is in the room—whispers, “You, uh, you miss me, don’t you?” Steve says, “Of course I miss you.” The retired Navy guy Steve is with asks, “Who are you talking to? Your wife?” Steve replies, “I’m talking to my partner.”
In S2E18, Harry the retired police officer offers them marriage counseling.
They go to a sorority house in S3E12 and one of the women in the house says, without really seeing them interact, “Kelly, your dads are here to pick you up.”  Both men look slightly put out by the statement—but Steve expressly says it’s because he doesn’t think he looks old enough to have a daughter in college.
In S5E17, they occupy a woman’s apartment for a stakeout, and a nosy neighbor assumes they are married. At the end of the episode they leave for couples therapy (no, really) and the woman is confused, because they said they weren’t married, to which Chin says they just fight like an old married couple.
There are numerous other examples of this. A lot of it happens non-verbally, in looks they get from other people or that other people share behind their back, including people who have known and worked with them for years, usually Chin.
In S4E11, Danny calls Steve cheap while the whole group is out, and everyone backs away from their argument, side-eying each other like, “oh the married couple is fighting again.”
So, maybe it’s a joke.
3. More Than Subtext
But maybe it isn’t.
“Ho yay” is a phrase that is sometimes used, meaning “homoeroticism, yay,” to refer to homoerotic subtext in otherwise heteronormative narratives. The history of this has its roots in the fact that you couldn’t put overt mentions of homosexuality on television for a long time. So you had to do the wink, wink, nod, nod. The “roommate” or intimate friendships that most people would interpret as good friends.
There seems to be a conception used in anti-gay rhetoric that homosexuality didn’t exist until the last couple decades and that the liberal agenda intends to turn everyone gay. I would recommend to these people to read any Ancient Greek text (like, any of them), but maybe straight men and women don’t see subtext, because they don't have to. They’re represented.
Sometimes people use the term “queerbaiting” to refer to TV shows that use homoerotic subtext not in a way to imply that characters are gay, but, rather, to tease the idea that a show has gay characters so that people who want to see that kind of representation on a show watch it, but so that people who are “offended” by gay representation won’t not watch it.
I’m not sure if this happens intentionally, or if it’s just people who are fed up with the lack of representation reading into it, because the big TV demographic that everyone is after is males age 18-34, and the majority of men are heterosexual. So, this is unfortunate, but this is the problem with diversifying television, film, publishing, etc. Straight white men are still the default, so anyone else is a niche market, i.e., a risk.[2]
But Hawaii Five-0 goes way beyond the jokes, and I think even beyond baiting. You can actually watch the show as if they are in a romantic relationship together without squinting. Sure, it’s an open relationship, and you have to read both characters as bisexual (easy to do with Steve, a little harder to do with Danny), but on my reading it’s a relationship that goes outside the usual mapping of two men or two women onto a stereotypical heteronormative relationship tropes.
Maybe they aren’t sexually involved--the jokes and innuendo are almost always about them being romantically involved. And that might help my case.
4. The Evolution of a Couple
But I’m getting ahead of myself, because it takes them awhile to get there. Their relationship really starts out with pulling pigtails. They tease each other about their musical tastes, food likes and dislikes, Danny’s love of New Jersey, Steve’s love of firearms. But then “Sexy Eyes” by Dr. Hook comes on in the car one day (S1E11), which is such a lame song there is no reason why Steve McGarrett would like it, and Steve refuses to let Danny change it. It is my personal belief that Steve McGarrett listens to Supertramp and King Crimson exclusively (I have absolutely no proof of this), so not letting Danny change the song from “Sexy Eyes”? I don’t even know what to do with that.
A lot of friendships (and particularly male friendships) are based on ribbing. But neither Steve nor Danny interacts that way with Chin, Kono, Max, Jerry, or Kamekona. In fact, the only person Danny argues with the way he argues with Steve is with his ex-wife. And Steve doesn’t even remotely interact with any of the characters the way he does with Danny. He gives Lou a hard time on occasion, but he never really teases anyone else. The more I think about it, the more I think he is one of the most earnest characters on television. Steve does have a very close friendship with Chin, and in later seasons with Lou, but they’re more serious with each other. The care and support are there, but the playfulness isn’t.
In the first season, Steve and Danny have pet names for each other. In S1E6:
Steve: When I say, “Book ’em, Danno,” it’s a term of endearment. Danny: OK. Do it every day. I like it.
Danny first refers to Steve as “babe” in S1E10. He says it’s a Jersey thing, but he never refers to Chin as “babe” or Kono (who would probably shoot him for it). Sometimes Steve parrots back with a “babe” of his own. They do this in front of other people who don’t know them, usually men, usually men who look like they have no idea what to do with these two crazy cops.
Kono calls Steve “boss” or “McGarrett” and Danny is always “Danny.” Chin calls them by their first or last names. No one calls Danny “Danno” except for Danny’s children, because it’s a nickname Grace bestowed on him.
They flirt. See S1E13:
Steve: We're gonna tear into this guy's life and we're gonna rip it all apart. Danny: I have never liked you more than in this moment right now. It’s beautiful.
Substitute “I have never been more turned on than in this moment right now,” and you’re in an action movie where the guy is hitting on the badass woman.
Or in S2E1:
Danny: Why are you smiling at me? Steve: You’re not wearing a tie. It suits you.
There was also the thong incident. While in a party bus investigating a case (S4E6), Danny finds a discarded g-string, he holds it up to show Steve, and Steve says, “You gonna get an evidence bag, or are you gonna put that thing on?” For a second you can see on Danny’s face that he thinks Steve might be serious.
They know each other in ways that you only people you are intimate with. Danny has a catalogue of Steve’s looks.
Meanwhile Steve catalogs Danny’s tones of voice. Hell, Danny knows Steve’s favorite kind of frosting when he surprises him with a birthday cake. They open up to each other about their pasts in a way that we don’t (or rarely) see them do with anyone else. They communicate with each other nonverbally. They read each other. By season 7, they recognize each other’s moods and use that knowledge to encourage them to talk about what’s on their mind.
This certainly could be best friend behavior. Or it could be the result of their couples therapy (really).
Like I said, maybe they don’t have a sexual relationship, but they also touch each other a lot.
They don’t do this with other characters that they are friends with. Sometimes Steve will put his hand on Chin’s shoulder. Everyone on the team is a hugger. They’re all close. They’re ohana. But it’s different.
Steve and Danny sit really close to each other on couches. In season 3’s Halloween episode (S3E5), they watch The Notebook together on the couch. Steve’s girlfriend Cath is on the opposite end, Grace next to her. Then Danny. Then Steve on the end. He puts his arm around the back of the couch and Danny snuggles next to him. (It was apparently Scott Caan’s idea to do this.)
In S2E8, Steve shows up at Danny’s apartment, puts his arm around the back of the couch behind Danny and they watch Enemy Mine together.
They almost always sit next to each other when the whole group is together. They danced together at Kono’s wedding (S6E1). Not a group dance, this was arms around each other, holding hands, dancing like a couple. I have never seen two straight males friends do this, and I know plenty of straight men who are openly affectionate with their male friends.
One of my favorite moments happened in S4E3 where they are in a warehouse after a shootout, and Danny needs zip ties, so he walks toward Steve, who just lifts his arm as he crosses the warehouse in the other direction to give Danny access to the pocket on his tac vest. Danny grabs the zip ties while they both keep walking. It’s a practiced dance of bodily familiarity. Again, this could be because they work together closely. Steve and Kono have a silent language sometimes when they’re taking down bad guys, but they share a certain cold-blooded killer instinct that Danny and Chin don’t, but it’s not the same as a physical familiarity.
Danny knows Steve’s blood type. He gives Steve part of his liver in S6E25 (after he goes on a cold, uncharacteristic, ballistic rampage against the guy who shot Steve). They will put their lives on the line for the other and directly in harm’s way. They will go all over the world to find the other at all costs.
Danny went to North Korea to rescue Steve (S2E10). Because Jenna knew that Danny was Steve’s person to call in an emergency. She could have called HQ. She didn’t. She called Danny.
Danny went to Afghanistan to bring Steve back after he is captured by the Taliban and rescued by the Army, who didn’t know he was there (S4E20). And Danny gets super defensive when the Army officers who hold Steve try to get him to leave the room. Steve is surprised Danny is there, he asks Danny why he came, and Danny says, “I had to make sure you were okay.” Steve looks so touched in that moment, because it was the first time anyone done something like that for him.
Danny goes with Steve to a random location in the Cambodian jungle to dig up a grave, because it gave Steve a clue into his mother’s identity and past that is haunting Steve (S4E18).
Steve went to Colombia to with Danny to try to find Danny’s brother (S5E4) and later to get Danny out of Colombian prison (S5E18). He gets on a fundamental level that Danny has to get revenge for his brother, and he knows that it’s going to hurt Danny.
My point is that they really seem like a couple.
Danny goes with Steve to a doctor’s appointment in S7E20. He is in the exam room with Steve while the doctor comes in. He asks questions like a spouse. He makes the doctor tell Steve the same thing that he has been telling him in the hopes that he’ll listen to the doctor. They also have a conversation about playing doctor, because Danny is messing around with the doctor’s equipment.
Danny: Now, would you please do me this one favor. Steve: No, I will not bend over and cough with your cold hands. Danny: It’s not that kind of test.
Note that Steve’s objection is the coldness of the hands, not the hands.
Danny enters Steve’s house without knocking. Steve enters Danny’s apartment without knocking. Danny cooks in Steve’s kitchen. And then there was this in S1E24:
Steve: I’ll take powdered eggs over your eggs any day. Danny: You love my eggs. Steve: They’re terrible, Danny.
Why would Danny be making Steve eggs? Who cooks their work friend breakfast food?
5. Defying Heteronormativity
The show hits on a lot of the typical heteronormative romantic TV/movie tropes with Steve and Danny’s relationship.
Agents dating, on a stakeout, undercover—this happens in particular when Steve opens up to Danny about his stunted emotional growth during a stakeout, to which Danny responds by buying Steve a guitar.
Anguished/dying declaration of love: When they are trapped under a building together (S4E19) and when they are dealing with a uranium bomb (S7E18) (more on those below).
Like an old married couple: Again, numerous examples of this.
Belligerent sexual tension: Danny rants at Steve all the time, and Steve argues back, you keep waiting for Janeane Garofalo to jump in and say, “Would the two of you just do it and get it over with? I'm starving!”
Innocent cohabitation: Steve lets Danny stay at his place for a while after Danny’s apartment gets destroyed, Danny sleeps with the TV on (which drives Steve crazy) to drown out the noise of the ocean (which drives Danny crazy), so he buys Danny super expensive noise-canceling headphones from a store clerk who gives him the “partner?” face (S2E9).
Love at first punch: Danny punches Steve in the face in the first episode (S1E1).
But it isn’t entirely heteronormative. Sometimes you run into the “which one is the more feminine one” stereotype when you see gay couples portrayed on TV. You might be tempted to think that H50 plays into this and that Danny is more feminine because he’s sometimes called the nagging wife, and because Steve is a Navy SEAL and Steve really is the central character of the show.
But when you look closer, Danny shows more overt signs of traditional hetero-masculinity than Steve does. His primary emotional response to anything is anger. He goes alpha male protective over his kids to the point of causing others bodily harm. He falls asleep in front of the TV, wakes up when Steve turns it off and says “I was watching that.” He’s the one who sometimes leers at women, is distracted by bikini models. He fathered two children. He is coded as straight.
Steve meanwhile always looks women in the eye. He is either very reserved or he is more individual, person-centric in his choosing of romantic or sexual partners. Given that his old nickname was “smooth dog” (still not sure if that was a joke or not, because Steve is also a huge dork) you get the feeling that he used to be more of a lothario, but doesn’t do that anymore. Maybe he was overcompensating. He is also, in spite of his hard exterior, extremely thoughtful and compassionate. He’s also nags Danny about Danny being a slob after Danny house sits for him. He’s a control freak--usually the accusation given to women.
He also remembers down to the day how long he and Danny have been partners (this happens multiple times over the course of the show).
It wouldn’t be a stretch to consider that maybe Steve is bi or gay, but was closeted while serving in the Navy. You see him in two relationships with women on the show, and both women are not traditionally feminine. Catherine was great. She was absolutely likable. She was a Naval officer, she likes her steaks rare, she drinks beer, she shoots guns. She was competent, confident, and kind of a badass. She was perfect for Steve, and I could roll with it. I like Lynn, too. She’s tough, a thrill-seeker, well-matched for Steve, someone he can do things with that Danny wouldn’t do.
It takes a little mental gymnastic work, it does, but they might just have an open relationship. It works for some people. And it would make Hawaii Five-0 a really progressive show if they went there.
There’s the Rachel issue to contend with. Steve seems upset when he finds out that Danny and Rachel started sleeping together again at the end of season 1. Mostly because Danny didn’t tell him. But in the end, Danny actually chooses Steve over Rachel. Steve gets arrested, and, even though Danny is supposed to meet Rachel and Grace at the airport, he goes to Steve instead.
The writers are teasing Rachel and Danny getting back together, which I vehemently oppose. They tried it twice, Rachel lied to Danny, she resents his job, they don’t work together. It also throws off my narrative a little, even though I think Rachel actually likes Steve, so maybe Danny is going to break Steve’s heart and I will never forgive the writers.
Steve and Cath never really defined their relationship. Though Steve did plan to propose to her, and Danny encouraged it. That doesn’t really kill my theory, though, because I think Danny probably loved Cath, too. Marriage would have been the only way to keep Cath in Hawaii, but marriage wouldn’t have precluded Danny and Steve from still being together in some capacity. Because Cath accepted Danny’s role in Steve’s life. In one episode (S3E17), Cath buys Steve tickets to the Pro Bowl, but Steve already had tickets for him and Danny. Cath just took Kono instead and teased Danny and Steve about their date. In the end, Steve gets injured on a case and can’t go. Danny could still go, but chooses to stay with Steve at the hospital instead. Danny has always been more important to Steve than even Cath was.
I do think part of Danny still likes the idea of a nuclear family, because he’s a parent. But he’s not necessarily a monogamist, though. As evidenced by the fact that he started sleeping with Rachel when she was still married. (Presumably Rachel was already planning to leave Stan, but Danny gets upset when he thinks his sister is cheating on her husband in a later episode, so I don’t know. But hypocrite much, Danno?)
Now you have them in more of a polyamorous situation. They give each other dating advice, but it’s sort of like telling your crush what you would like them to do to woo you. It’s sort of like they are the primary couple and they are negotiating how to deal with the open part of their relationship. Maybe they still both prefer sleeping with women. Danny seems to lean more that way. Maybe they do the commitment, companionship thing with each other. Maybe whatever they have together is new and they’re still working through it.
In S7E16, they “accidentally” spend Valentine’s Day weekend together. They’re with their respective girlfriends, but they end up spending most of the weekend together, and it was their girlfriends who booked the vacation, the adjoining rooms, and they seem more interested in hanging out with each other than they do Danny and Steve.
When the four of them have dinner together at the end of the episode on the beach in a romantic setting, Steve and Danny are sitting next to each other and Lynn and Melissa are on the other side of the table. Earlier in the day, Danny had apologized to Melissa for something and she says, “I knew what I was getting into.”
It’s also worth noting that the steamy love scenes we get on screen are between Kono and Adam and between Chin and Abby. You see Cath and Steve making out pretty heavily once, fully clothed, and you see them in bed together, but Steve and Lynn never even kiss. You see Danny and Melissa in bed together, but it’s only ever implied.
Whatever else, this show does challenge heteronormative stereotypes on some level.
6. The Evidence of Affection
They regularly say “I love you” to each other. Sometimes there’s a “bro” or “buddy” added, but it almost always sounds awkward. You feel like they know other people are watching so they don’t go for it. Most of the time. Sometimes there’s more feeling behind it. “I love you,” I thought I was going to lose you. Sometimes they say “I love you” in the way that you say thank you after you convince your spouse to do an unpleasant chore.
Steve takes Danny on a date (a hike, whatever) in S1E20 to show him cliffs that he used to climb and petroglyphs that his dad used to take him to when he was a kid. This is a big deal, because Steve is opening up about his family. He even suggests that they take Grace there when she’s older. Danny, who complains just to complain, reluctantly agrees that “it’s nice.” It’s kind of romantic.
Steve ends up falling when he goes to check on another fallen climber. Steve breaks his arm in the process but is more worried about Danny being careful when he climbs to the summit of their hike to get cell service. Help does arrive. As the helicopter takes him away, Danny makes a heart sign at him. Maybe it was a joke. But at the end of the episode, he gets jealous when a woman comes up to sign Steve’s cast.
But when Danny thought they were going to die under the collapsed building (mentioned at the beginning, in S4E19), there was no joking around. Again,
Danny: When we were in there, you said ah, y'know before you did the thing with the bomb, you said what you said ... I want you to know, I feel the same way. Steve: How is that exactly? Danny: You're making me say it? (Steve gives him a look) Come here. (they hug) I love you. Steve: I love you, buddy.
Take out the “buddy” and re-read that. I’ll wait.
In S7E18, there is a uranium bomb that Danny and Steve have to removed the uranium from and then take to another location. The bomb is volatile, and they have to take it across uneven terrain in an old truck. Before Steve starts the car, he tells Danny he loves him. Danny doesn’t say it back right then, he panics. But after Steve gets the uranium out, Danny apologizes, “Look, I’m sorry. I should’ve told you.” Told him about his retirement plans? Told him that he loved him? Who’s to say?
My all-time favorite line is in S5E12 when Steve starts helps out a teenager, Nahele, who stole his car but was really just dealt a shitty hand in life:
Danny: You know what you are? You’re a half-baked cookie, soft and gooey on the inside. Kid should be in juvenile hall, and you go and you give him a job  That’s why I love you, babe. You like fixing broken toys.
You don’t always see portrayals of male friendships that are so openly affectionate or willing to say they love one another, and I don’t want to diminish that, I really don’t. Familial love and platonic love are no less important than romantic love. As someone who identifies on the aro spectrum, this is important to me. But you get plenty of solid platonic relationships on the show.
Steve and Chin also have a strong relationship—Steve totally loses it when Chin is strapped with explosives in S1E12. He breaks into a police evidence room and steals $10 million to save Chin’s life. We find out in a flashback scene that after Chin’s wife dies, that Steve would regularly call him in the middle of the night and invite him out for coffee at the diner near Chin’s house, and he would sit with him in companionable silence in the middle of the night. That is friendship. That is love.
But it’s still not the same as it is with Danny. It’s more like you would expect a brotherhood, family, or a close friendship.
Steve and Kono’s relationship is probably my favorite on the show, because Steve neither treats her like a sister nor as a sexual object. Danny leers at Kono the first time he meets her. Eric hits on her, Sang Min hits on her. Steve treats her like a peer. They’re friends, but there is a mutual respect that you rarely get between men and women in real life.
7. More Than Ohana
So, maybe they’re just family. Maybe.
They go to couples counseling—I am not making this up; they literally go to couples counseling—because they have communication problems that affect their working relationship. They also argue about money. These are the two classic problems that romantic couples argue about.
Tumblr media
Danny always pays when they go out and would like Steve to stop conveniently forgetting his wallet. Steve doesn’t share his feelings enough. Danny feels like Steve doesn’t listen to him. Danny is the nagging one in the couple (in S1E13, he even admits this, “I don’t want to be a nag, but…”). But Steve is the control freak (as Danny regularly points out, as Steve himself says in S7E18 When he exposes himself to the uranium so Danny doesn’t have to). They’re both worrywarts, particularly about the other, and about Danny’s daughter.
Steve goes to pick up Grace from school in the first season (S1E23) like he’s her step-father, because Danny is in the hospital. He didn’t talk to Danny about it—all he knew was that the doctor said he was going to be okay. He already knew it was Danny’s day to get Grace.
The way they know each other is intimate.
There is a scene in S7E14 where Danny and Chin watch Steve have a conversation on the phone, and Danny gives commentary, knowing the gist of the conversation based on Steve’s body language,
Danny: His mouth has not moved in three and a half minutes. Chin: You know, maybe she's got him on hold. Danny: No. No. His nostrils are flaring. He's pacing like a maniac. And he just switched the phone from his right hand to his left hand, which means he wants to punch something. Chin: Well, you know your boy well.
In addition to the counseling, which is not just a one episode gag (no, really, they have a workbook), Steve “accidentally” books them a couple’s counseling retreat. It’s almost as if he wanted Danny to see that they are a couple, but then he chickened out.
They talk to each other like a couple. There are so many examples of this, I don’t know where to start.
When Danny’s mom comes to visit (S6E15), Steve offers to come down to keep Danny company because she is driving Danny crazy. This was after Steve met her and was overwhelmed by her and Danny’s bickering that he escaped.
Steve: What could the FBI possibly want with your mother? Danny: I have no idea. Why do you think I’m calling you? Steve: Did you ask her? Danny: Of course I asked her. What kind of stupid question is that? Steve: Whoa. Why are you getting mad at me?
Because he recognizes that Danny is upset about something else and projecting. After Danny explains why he’s upset (counseling works!), Steve responds with “You want me to come down there? I’ll come down there.” He’s working a case, but he would drop everything to run interference with Danny’s mother.
Steve cares about Danny’s daughter and son as if they are his family. And you can write it off along with the theme of “ohana,” you could, but by  season 7, Steve and Danny are basically co-parents. Steve goes to the governor to help Danny keep his custody agreement in season 1. When Danny gets taken to Colombia, he asks Steve to talk to Grace. Steve does, and the way he talks to Grace it’s clear that he respects her enough not to lie to her.
In S4E14, the whole group is together, including Grace, celebrating the end of a case. Steve pulls Danny away from the group under the guise of bringing back drinks for everyone just so he can tell Danny what a good kid Grace is. The way Steve looks at her is with fatherly pride.
When Grace’s school dance is held hostage in S7E8, Steve is absolutely frantic until he sees that Grace is okay. He calls out her name like a concerned father, and when she sees him, she races to him to give him a hug. When they separate, Steve looks at Danny and asks, “No hug?”
Danny says, “I’ll give you a hug. I’ll give you a kiss. You pick a base.” Then the three of them walk together, Danny with an arm around them each. I want a scene where Grace’s friends ask her who her dad’s hot boyfriend is. Because you know it happened.
In S7E23, Steve helps Danny decorate Charlie’s bedroom (at Danny’s house? At Steve’s? I can’t tell.). Danny is dealing with protecting a witness (he also leads Steve--not the team, Steve personally--on a wild goose chase around Oahu to track the men who want to silence the witness, which amounts to him ordering Steve around until Steve drives his truck through a house to stop the bad guys), so Steve finishing building Charlie’s race car bed. He plays race car driver with Charlie before bedtime, he tucks him in, brushes his hair off his face, and wishes him goodnight. Like a parent.
Their families talk about them like they’re partners. Hell, Steve takes Danny as his date to Steve’s aunt’s wedding.
In S2E19, Steve’s sister Mary runs into them at the beach as they are coming in from surfing. She asks, “So you guys are like surf buddies now?” And Steve says, “Kind of.”
It’s meant to be on the surface a comment on Danny’s surfing ability, I think, but the awkwardness of it doesn’t account for that. After Mary leaves, Danny says, “So we’re surf buddies now.” The ensuing argument that you can fill in goes something along the lines of: you can’t tell her we’re seeing each other? It is the natural next line in that conversation. “Surf buddies” is like the male version of “gal pals.”
When Danny’s sister comes to visit, she knows who Steve is because Danny talks about him a lot. She says “Mom said you were a catch.” But you don’t get the feeling that she means a catch for her.
The clincher for me was in S7E18 (the uranium episode).
He and Danny have an argument in front of students at the police academy until Duke intervenes. Steve read a list that Danny left on his desk full of things he likes, things like traveling (which Steve points out that Danny always complains when they travel together). Steve calls Danny out for keeping something from him and offers to talk about it, and Danny gets mad because Steve invaded his privacy by looking at the list. The next scene you see Steve talking on the phone to Chin trying to get his assessment of the situation.
We find out that it’s a list of things that Danny would like to do when he retires. Steve gets upset. In the “I thought we would always be together, please don’t leave me” type of way.
Again, “You didn’t feel the need to include me in the decision for you to retire. I trust you to bring me into big decisions like that.”
In the ensuing conversation, Steve compares his relationship to Danny with Danny’s first marriage. Danny says that maybe he wants to open a restaurant after he retires. Steve is incredulous, but by the end of the episode, after they’ve both survived, Steve wants him to name it “Steve’s, “because if we’re not together, we’ll still be together.” Steve is so co-dependent on Danny I could write a separate essay about it. To show his support, Steve even buys Danny a monogrammed chef’s hat in S7E25.
The last scene of S7E18, when Lou tells Steve that HPD was the target of the uranium bomb, you see Steve turn and look at everyone eating dinner in the house (McGarrett’s house. Where Danny was cooking.), and the camera following Steve’s gaze focuses on Danny.
8. McDanno Forever
I can work with the girlfriends and the apparent heterosexuality. I can work with the “bro”s and “buddy”s. My point is that if the writers started writing out the women as love interests and wrote in a few more domestic scenes with Steve and Danny, it wouldn’t take away from the show. In fact, I don’t think anyone would notice anything was different. Because it wouldn’t actually be different.
It also genuinely wouldn’t feel out of character for Danny to finally figure out that he and Steve have actually been together together for years without him realizing it. Steve, of course, knew all along.
But it also wouldn’t surprise me if they are already knowingly in a committed but open relationship. One that maybe started with sex but ended up as life partners of some sort, because however you want to define it, Danny is very clearly the most important person in Steve’s life. And Danny clearly relies on, depends on, trusts and loves Steve.
You can actually hear the reactions when they tell everyone.
Lou: *nearly falls over laughing*
Chin: “Yeah, we know, brah.”
Kono: “Everyone knows.”
Jerry: “Worst kept secret since The Flash’s identity.”[3]

[2] There’s a lot more to say about this. Diversity without tokenism is really important to me, and some day I'll write something about it.
